BAK-12 installation strengthens Slovak partnership

The BAK-12 installation demonstrates teamwork by strengthening the Slovak partnership as a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally and emphasizes the importance of initiatives to maintain and reinforce readiness, collaboration, and interoperability, said Col Matthew A. A change of command ceremony held on Pulaski Barracks marked a change in leadership at U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, July 11.
Col. Jeffery Higgins assumed command from Col. Reid Furman, who has served as the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander since July 2022.
Mr. Tommy Mize, Installation Management Command-Europe director, presided over the ceremony and praised Furman’s leadership in his remarks.
“Col. Furman has commanded this garrison with distinction,” Mize said. “With an enormous footprint covering over 30 Army installations across two German states, collocated with Ramstein Air Force Base, and until recently, also responsible for Army installations in Romania and Bulgaria, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz is one of the most complex and critically important garrisons in our Army.”
Mize also acknowledged Furman’s ability to build partnerships with German officials while overseeing the garrison footprint.

Furman welcomed Higgins and his family, expressing confidence in his leadership and the warm reception he’ll receive from the garrison community.

Higgins, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, most recently served as the director of communications for Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (NATO) in the Netherlands.
In his new position as USAGRheinland Pfalz commander, he will lead 1,600 employees supporting over 42,000 people across 29 sites in Germany, including Baumholder Military Community, Coleman Work Site, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Miesau Ammo Depot, and the Germersheim Army Depot.
Higgins thanked the audience for attending the ceremony, with gratitude extended to his family, Col. Furman, and Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch.
“My family and I are honored to join your ranks,” he said. “We look forward to earning your trust and respect, and ultimately continuing to build upon the great work that you do every day for our community.
“It is with great pride and humility that I assume duties, today, as your commander,” he said.

A team of 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Airmen, 31st Fighter Wing pilots and the Slovak Air Force worked together to ensure the successful installation of the BAK-12. The final test to certify the system was successfully performed on July 10. Following the certification testing, the Slovak AF assumed responsibility for maintaining the new BAK-12 system at Malacky AB during a handover ceremony.
“The BAK-12 system at Malacky Air Base not only enhances our deterrence posture but also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to NATO’s defensive alliance,” said Bartlett. “U.S. forces are ready and postured to integrate seamlessly with Slovak allies and other NATO partners to deter threats and defend our alliances.”
The new BAK-12 system is a tangible example of how the United States and allies can work together to ensure global security, said Bartlett.
The BAK-12 system and strategic introduction of F-16s into the Slovak AF fleet reinforces Slovak national security and demonstrates the Slovak dedication to maintaining a robust and modern military force, said Martin Vojtašovic, Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic state secretary.
“This initiative is part of a broader framework of cooperation and partnership with the United States,” said Vojtašovic.
USAFE-AFAFRICA implements concepts such as Agile Combat Employment, which promotes unification with allies and partners to deter, defend and win across the spectrum of conflict. ACE allows the U.S. to work closely with European allies and partners to deliver lethal combat power, remain agile in execution, and strategic in deterrence, said Bartlett.
“This new capability allows Airmen and aircrews to conduct agile combat operations,
delivering lethal combat power wherever and whenever needed,” said Bartlett.
Bartlett expressed how this adaptive capability is crucial in today’s dynamic security environment, where the ability to rapidly deploy and sustain operations is essential. Installation of the BAK-12 at Malacky AB adds to the operational agility of the U.S. and Slovak Air Force by allowing F-16s to utilize Malacky AB.
The BAK-12 is a mechanical barrier that aids in decelerating aircraft when landing.
The certification test was performed by a successful pass of an F-16 through the system, bringing the aircraft to a complete stop. Once the F-16 was at a stop, the BAK-12 system and the aircraft were thoroughly inspected.
The 435th AGOW has dedicated significant effort to ensure the BAK-12 system was a success.
They started by removing old systems that were past their service life and demolished the failing concrete foundations, said Tech. Sgt. Justin Smith, 435th Construction and Training Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of U.S. Air Forces in Europe aircraft dressing system theater operations.
“Then we repaired the concrete foundations, provided necessary construction, repaired the old BAK-12 systems, and reinstalled the system in less than a year,” said Smith. “It was a huge effort, there were a lot of moving pieces and every flight within our squadron was involved.”
Smith reflected on how working alongside Slovak counterparts was a positive experience and beneficial for his team in completing the BAK-12 installation.
“Everyone was more than willing to help and assist where needed, they all seemed excited for us to be here,” said Smith.
The certification of the BAK-12 system at Malacky AB coincides with the 20-year anniversary of Slovakia’s accession into NATO.

Airman First Class Emily Haskins, 86th CPTS financial analyst, and Senior Airman Henry Blackburn, 86th Medical Support Squadron commander support staff technician, were hiking at Berchtesgaden National Park over the 4th of July weekend. Along the way they encountered a German hiker in need of medical assistance.
Haskins, a certified wilderness first responder, expertly dressed the wound, and Blackburn quickly called for emergency services.
Thanks to their swift actions and compassion, the injured individual received the necessary medical attention. The injured hiker was then transferred to a German hospital by helicopter for further treatment.

USAFA Cadets visit 521 AMOW during summertime Operations Air Force Program

During the summer, cadets at the Air Force Academy get to participate in the Operations Air Force training program, where they visit more than 40 bases worldwide to get a glimpse into the operational Air Force.

Romanian native joins US Army — achieves career goals

Growing up in a small rural town in southern Romania near the Carpathian Mountains, Staff Sgt. Luiza Pozniak had always dreamed of living and working in the United States. Her love for the U.S. first began in 2007 when she arrived in Wildwood, New Jersey on a J1 Student Visa. She returned to Romania briefly but found her way back to the States in 2008.
“In Romania, I was working and traveling during my summer breaks,” said Pozniak. “That’s when I decided to apply for the ‘Work and Travel’ program. Coming to the United States was great, but after 3 months I was still deciding if it was a good idea to stay or not. That is when I extended my visa and never looked back.”
In 2009, Pozniak packed up and moved out west to Arizona where she worked as a waitress at a large resort hotel in Tucson.
“I do not enjoy cold weather, so Tucson was the perfect place for me,” added Pozniak. “Tucson is not a real big city, but everyone I encountered there was extremely kind and welcoming. After a few years of living and working as a waitress in Arizona, it was time for me to return to school, as I knew I could not be a waitress for the rest of my life.”
After waiting tables in Tucson for a few years, Pozniak decided to pursue a career in Dental Laboratory Technology and enrolled in classes at Pima Community College in Tucson.
“In my last year of school, I received a job offer as a dental lab technician, but the benefits were not that great due it being a small office,” Pozniak added. “As a result, I unfortunately had to keep my job as a waitress at the resort and apply for health insurance
through my employer. I was working 7 days a week and knew I had to change my hectic schedule. It just so happened that one of my dental lab classmates was in the Air Force,
and he gave me the idea of joining the military. After talking to recruiters for the Navy, Army, and Air Force, I decided to enlist in the Army in 2016.”
Enlisting in the Army as a dental laboratory technician paid off for Pozniak.
“Joining the Army at age thirty-one and already having the required school credits, I only had to attend basic training at Ft. Jackson and then went straight to my first duty station,” added Pozniak. “I was able to skip Advanced Individual Training, however, I did end up having to perform my dental lab duties for one year before receiving my additional skill identifier. The bottom line is, I chose the dental military occupational specialty because I really love being a dental lab technician and it is my passion.”
For many young adults, joining the U.S. military offers them an opportunity to become part of something larger than themselves, and becoming part of a team.
“For me, I love the camaraderie of being in the Army,” said Pozniak. “We make brothers and sisters everywhere we go, and they become family for life. Two of my best friends have since departed the Army, but we are still as close as we were when we were stationed together.”
Since November 2022, Pozniak has served as the current operations non-commissioned officer for Dental Health Command Europe. Prior to that she served in various dental assignments in the Republic of Korea, Ft. Cavazos and Ft. Liberty.
According to senior military officials, the military offers an excellent segway and transition path for civilian careers after military service.
“After I retire from the Army, I plan on working as a civilian dental lab technician,” added Pozniak. “I am a very active person, and I know that after the military, I will still need something to keep me busy. I really love my job and being a dental lab technician is the perfect one for me.”

Being stationed or deployed overseas can be both rewarding and challenging. One of these challenges is staying connected and informed about policies and issues back home. However, U.S. citizens can ensure their voices are heard through absentee voting, even while overseas.
The Uniformed and Overseas Citizen Absentee Voting Act protects the voting rights of U.S. citizens who are 18 years or older, to include active-duty service members of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, their eligible family members, and all U.S. citizens residing outside the continental United States.
According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, the first step is to submit a Federal Post Card Application. This standardized application, used across all states, serves as both a voter registration form and an absentee ballot request form, ensuring eligibility to receive a ballot for all federal elections for at least one calendar year.
Whether you are a first-time voter or have previously voted absentee, you must complete an FPCA each calendar year to participate in elections as an overseas absentee voter.
To vote in the November 2024 election, U.S. citizens overseas need to have completed a FPCA in 2024.
Even if you have never voted while overseas before, the process is easy.
1. Request your ballot: Complete a new FPCA. You must complete a new FPCA after January 1, 2024, to ensure you receive your ballot for the 2024 elections. Submitting the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives) including primaries and special elections during the calendar year in which it is submitted. All local election officials in all U.S. states and territories accept the FPCA.
2. You can complete the FPCA online at FVAP.gov. The online voting assistant will ask you questions specific to your state. We encourage you to request your blank ballots be delivered electronically (by email, internet download, or fax, depending on your state). Include your email address on your FPCA to take advantage of the electronic ballot delivery option. Return the FPCA per the instructions on the website. The online voting assistant will tell you if your state allows the FPCA to be returned electronically or if you must submit a paper copy with original ink signature. If you must return a paper version, please follow the same instructions below for returning your ballot.
3. Receive and complete your ballot: States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal
office and generally send ballots at least 30 days before primary elections. For most states, you can confirm your registration and ballot delivery online.
4. Return your completed ballot:
While some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically, others do not. If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials, you can do so free of charge at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Place your ballot in a postage-paid return envelope (this template can be printed on or affixed to any envelope), or in an envelope bearing sufficient domestic U.S. postage, and address it to the relevant local election officials. You can also return your FPCA or ballot to your local election officials via international mail or professional courier service at your own expense. You can always get voting assistance from the embassy/consulate or drop off your completed voting forms and ballots, addressed to your local election officials, during the following hours:
For the Consulate General in Munich:
U.S. citizens wishing to drop off ballots can do so at the Consular entrance (Von-der-Tann Strasse) of the Consulate General (Koeniginstrasse 5 München 80539) between the hours of 1-3 p.m., Monday through Friday (except U.S. and German holidays). Please bring a form of identification (preferably a U.S. passport) and inform the guard that you would like to drop off voting materials. The guard will show you to the voting materials drop-box where you can leave your registration or ballot.
Please note that all visitors to the embassy or consulates general are subject to security screening and you will not be permitted to bring electronic devices, including cell phones, inside the facility. Also note that it can take up to four weeks for mail to reach its destination if sent by an embassy or consulate via diplomatic pouch. All U.S. citizens are advised to submit their forms and ballots accordingly.
Any U.S. citizen voter in Germany, regardless of location, may elect to submit their ballot by mail within Germany to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. U.S. citizens wishing to drop off ballots in-person at one of the U.S. Consulates General in Düsseldorf, Hamburg, or Leipzig can email GermanyACS@state.gov to coordinate a time to do so.
For submission by mail, U.S. citizens throughout Germany may mail their documents to the U.S. Embassy in Berlin using any local courier. Simply place your sealed envelope containing your ballot inside a local mailing envelope addressed to:

For the embassy in Berlin:
U.S. Citizens wishing to drop off ballots can do so at the Hüttenweg entrance (Clayallee 170, 14195 Berlin) of the U.S. Embassy building located in Dahlem between the hours of 1-3 p.m., Monday through Friday (except U.S. and German holidays). Please bring a form of identification (preferably a U.S. passport) and inform the guard that you would like to drop off voting materials. Ballots will not be accepted at the embassy building in Mitte near the Brandenburg Gate.
For the consulate general in Frankfurt:
U.S. citizens wishing to drop off ballots can do so at the Consular entrance (Giessener Str. 30, 60435 Frankfurt) of the Consulate General between the hours of 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday (except U.S. and German holidays). Please bring a form of identification (preferably a U.S. passport) and inform the guard that you would like to drop off voting materials. The guard will show you to the voting materials drop-box where you can leave your registration or ballot.
Upon receipt, the embassy will forward the inner envelope to the United States using the diplomatic pouch. IMPORTANT: You must include your home address in Germany as the return address on both envelopes. Any envelope received without a return address cannot be forwarded through the diplomatic pouch and will be discarded.

CDC sets new rules for bringing dogs into US

Starting August 1, at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set new import requirements for dogs entering the United States.
With the recent changes from the CDC, Public Health Command Europe veterinarians strongly encourage service members and civilians, who are moving back to the U.S. with their dog after Aug. 1, to plan accordingly and get familiar with the new entry requirements.
The CDC issues regulations to control the entry of dogs into the United States from other countries. These rules apply to all dogs, including puppies, service animals, and dogs that left the United States and are returning. They also apply whether you are a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. resident, or foreign national.
“The CDC has noted an increase in canine rabies in the United States in the recent year, whereas previously it had been eliminated. Other wildlife strains of rabies have existed in the U.S. and all strains can pose a risk to humans and their pets,” said Lt. Col. Diane Collette, Regional Veterinary Clinical Consultant at PHCE. “CDC, USDA and import officials at borders have also recognized concerns with the validity of forms of pets entering the U.S.”
Dog rabies was eliminated in the United States in 2007 but unvaccinated canines can still contract the disease from rabid wildlife such as raccoons, skunks or bats.
According to the new regulations, the dog must be healthy upon arrival, at least 6 months of age and microchipped. They must be vaccinated and have the necessary veterinary documents, along with a CDC Dog Import Form receipt, according to the CDC’s website.
These rules apply to dogs that left the U.S. and are return -
ing regardless of the country they are coming from.
“If you don’t follow CDC’s rules, your dog won’t be allowed to enter the United States,” the CDC states on its website. “If denied entry, your dog will be sent back to the last country of departure at your expense. Country of departure is where the last trip originated — not
where the dog was born or where it lives.”
“All personnel stationed overseas and scheduled to PCS back to the United States after August 1 should review the CDC requirements,” said Collette. “Please reach out to your Veterinary treatment Facility if you have any other questions or concerns, it’s crucial to plan
accordingly to prepare for a smooth PCS.”

Summer is the season for relaxing, having fun and spending time with your family and friends, but it’s also a time to remember simple precautions to keep yourself and your family safe.
Heat cramps
Occur after several hours of physical exertion in the heat.
Symptoms:
• Painful muscle spasms usually in the legs or abdomen
Treatment:
• Get out of the heat and into the shade
• Hydrate with water or sports drink
• Stretch/massage the muscle
Prevention:
• Acclimatize to the environment so your body adapts to the heat
• Hydrate with water or sports drink before and during exercise
• Avoid exercising during hottest part of the day
• Wear light, loose clothing and use sunscreen
Heat exhaustion
Due to loss of water & salt through sweat
Symptoms:
• Headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness, and cool, clammy skin.
Treatment:
• Stop and rest
• Hydrate and get into a cool room or shade
• Loosen clothing and apply cool wet towels or pour cool water over the head
Prevention:
• Same as heat cramp prevention
• Dangers of Alcohol and the Sun
• Consuming alcohol can increase your risk of sunburn and dehydration and can diminish your awareness of your body and surroundings.
Alcohol can also lower inhibitions and contribute to reckless behavior. Fun summer activities, like swimming, water skiing, or recreational sports, can become potentially risky when mixed with alcohol.
Drinking alcohol also increases the risk of melanoma, or skin cancer. Rates of melanoma are up to 20 percent higher for individuals who regularly consume alcohol compared to those who occasionally or never drink alcohol.

Freinsheim in a festive mood. A medieval ring wall, a baroque old town, warm summer nights, nice people, sparkling wines and delicious delicacies from the Palatinate cuisine - that’s Freinsheim in a festive mood. The city will celebrate its wine festival around the historic city walls over a length of 1.3 kilometers, 19 stands will show what Palatinate hospitality means. Stroll along narrow paths, through historic alleys and across romantic squares in medieval Freinsheim and shop on Sunday.

Come and dine at one of the longest tables in the world in the middle of Zell’s old town! Tables will be set along 400 meters in the pedestrian zone and vendors will offer sweet, hearty, local and international, and delicious creations along with local wines. In addition, there will be live music and dance performances with the Zeller Kätzchentanzgruppe, a group of cats! Don’t miss out on the fun!
CHARITY SOCCER MATCH
JULY 24, 4:30 P.M., WALDSTADION MACKENBACH
The soccer match between the 1. FCK-Traditionsmannschaft and the Lotto-Elf is all about a good cause. The aim is to collect as many donations as possible for the Hildegard Jonghaus hospice in Landstuhl. A varied program will ensure an entertaining afternoon at the Waldstadion. There will be a free afternoon program for children and young people from 4:30 p.m. with a soccer taster session with former national team player Dariusz Wosz and Edgar Schmitt, who became famous as Euro-Eddy. In addition, there will be a dance workshop for hip-hop and cheerleading with trainer Nika Krosny-Wosz, registration at benefizspiel@kv-kl-land.drk.de. Fans and visitors can win 50 high-quality prizes in a raffle. There will be freshly tapped beer, waffles, food from the barbecue and much more. The charity match is organized by SV Mackenbach 1919 e.V., and other German organizations. Admission to the match is from 6:00 p.m. Tickets at six euros (adults) and three euros (young people) are available at the box office.

Once again their will be lots of live music and great performances on the nine stages throughout the city festival grounds. More than 50 artists and bands will get you into the swing for three days and provide best entertainment and get ready to rock at the Old Fire Station near Alexanderkirche. Foods, beverages, rides and plenty of fun for young and old(er) guests.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz awards Public Service Commendation Medal to Stephanie Keenan for community contributions

Col. Reid Furman, (outgoing) commander of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, recently awarded Stephanie Keenan, spouse of Lt. Col. Jeffrey Keenan, commander of the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion — Enhanced, with the Public Service Commendation Medal for her exceptional volunteer service to the Baumholder Military Community spanning from June 2022 to July 2024.
Keenan was recognized for her contributions in support of the United Service Organization, German-American Friendship, the 44th ESB, and for her role as the School Advisor Committee Chairperson.
Keenan served as the School Advisor Committee Chairperson for SY22/23 and SY23/24, playing a key role in reestablishing the SAC post COVID. Alongside her family dog, Finlea, she dedicated numerous hours volunteering in the Smith Elementary School library and Preschool Services for Children with Disabilities programs, enriching the lives of students through reading and encouragement.
Keenan and Finlea volunteered during lunch, recess, and other after-school events, consistently providing support to students at the school. Additionally, Keenan authored a children’s book detailing her and Finlea’s experiences at Smith Elementary School.
Her USO nomination reads:

Since joining our volunteer team in June 2022, Stephanie has supported our center operations and events through a total of 130 hours of volunteer time. Snow, rain or heat, the USO, along with therapy dog Finlea, is heading down to the Baumholder’s Motor Pools once a month to deliver some cheer to our Soldiers! No matter how much coffee, water, hot chocolate, Gatorade or handwarmers we bring, it’s the loving on Finlea and generosity of volunteers like Stephanie that make a huge impact on our service members!

The nomination also states that Keenan actively participated in German-American Stammtisch meetings in downtown Baumholder, maintaining a strong presence and connecting Soldiers and family members in
the BMC with the group. She engaged in various special events, including hikes, museum tours, visits to the German Artillery School, GermanAmerican BBQs, bowling, and bingo events. She played a key role in planning, coordinating, and executing these events, showcasing her enthusiasm and cooperation, which significantly contributed to fostering German-American friendship at Baumholder.
“Stephanie’s dedication to caring for the Soldiers, Civilians, and Family members greatly enhanced the 44th ESB – Enhanced mission accomplishment in providing signal support throughout Europe. Stephanie’s genuine concern for others helped quickly integrate newcomers during several real-world operations. Her efforts greatly enhanced unit morale and care for our team’s families,” the nomination reads.
Additionally, Keenan was honored with the sponsorship of a Micro Steam Turbine named ‘Stephanie’ on March 22 by the OIE Biomass plant at Baumholder due to her active engagement in German-American activities both on and off the installation.
U.S. Army Garrison Rhineland-Pfalz is committed to fostering a culture of care and respect, community leaders and volunteers like Keenan are a key part of this commitment and make a difference by enriching the lives of our Soldiers and families every day. We are grateful and proud of her achievements and dedication to the Baumholder military community.
ABC IN KMC: Olympic Games

France, our neighbor to the south, is hosting the Olympic Games this year. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are scheduled to begin on July 26, and will run until August 11. Athletes from approximately 206 National Olympic Committees are expected to participate, representing a wide array of countries from around the world.
The Olympic Games have a rich history dating back to ancient Greece, where they were held in Olympia from 776 B.C. until they were abolished in 393 B.C. The modern Olympic Games, as we know them today, were revived in 1896 by Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator and historian, with the first modern Olympics taking place in Athens, Greece, that year.
The ancient games were quite different from the modern Olympics in many ways. They were primarily a religious festival and athletic competition held as part of the larger celebration of the Olympian gods. The games featured events such as running, wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, and the pentathlon, which included discus throwing, javelin throwing, long jump, running, and wrestling.
During the ancient Olympic Games, athletes competed in the nude, and the games were open only to freeborn Greek men. Women were not allowed to participate or even attend the games, with very few exceptions. The games were a time of truce between the Greek city-states, allowing athletes and spectators to travel safely to Olympia.
The victors were awarded olive wreaths or crowns made of wild olive leaves, along with great honor and recognition in their home cities. The games continued for centuries until they were abolished in 393 B.C. by Emperor Theodosius I as part of his efforts to suppress pagan rituals and festivals.
Since their revival, the Olympic Games have become a symbol of international unity and sportsmanship, bringing athletes from around the world together to compete in a wide range of sports. The games have been held every four years, with a few exceptions
due to World Wars, since 1896. The Paralympic Games, which are for athletes with physical disabilities, have been held since 1960, following the initiative of Ludwig Guttmann, featuring 400 athletes from 23 countries.
Germany has hosted Olympic Games twice. The first time in 1936 when the Summer Olympics were held in Berlin. Despite the controversial political backdrop, the games showcased remarkable athletic achievements, including Jesse Owens’ historic performance winning four gold medals in track and field. In the same year the Winter Olympics were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, marked by memorable performances in winter sports history.
The second time Germany hosted the summer games was in 1972 in Munich. U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz broke all records by winning seven gold medals, while
the United States won 33 gold medals and Germany 13 in total.
The United States has hosted Olympic games a total of eight times and holds the record as the most frequent host country. Summer games were held in St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and Atlanta in 1996. Winter Olympics took place in Lake Placid in 1932, Squaw Valley in 1960, again in Lake Placid in 1980 and Salt Lake City in 2002. The upcoming Winter Olympics will be held in two cities in Italy, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, from February 6 to February 22, 2026.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games are significant as they mark the centennial celebration of the last time Paris hosted the games in 1924.
The Olympic summer program consists of various disciplines spanning across sports, with a
mix of traditional and newer events. Some of the staple disciplines include athletics, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, and cycling. Additionally, newer disciplines such as skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing have been introduced to add a contemporary flair to the games. Over 10,500 athletes are expected to compete for the desired gold, silver and bronze medals. Germany is sending 381 athletes in 27 disciplines and the United States 588 contestants in 34 sports.
The five Olympic rings, symbolizing the five continents, were mounted onto Paris’ most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, 50 days prior to the event to tune sports fans and the populace into the upcoming games. The torch for the Paris 2024 Olympics was lit on May 19, at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, continuing the tradition
from ancient times. From there, it embarked on a journey, passing through significant landmarks and cities, symbolizing unity and the Olympic spirit. It made a special showing at the D-Day 80 commemoration events in Normandy in early June.

History
Dresden has been settled in one form or another since 7,500 BC, with its founding associated with the massive expansion towards the east of Germanic peoples. The city of Dresden was founded in 1206, and it slowly gained a long history as the royal residence and capital of the Kings and Electors of Saxony. For hundreds of years, this gave the city a unique artistic and cultural splendor that was unique in all of Europe.
By 1270, Dresden had become the Margraviate capital and returned to the Wettin dynasty in 1319. The Saxony dukes looked at the city as their seat in 1485 before the electors did the same in 1547. From 1809 to 1918, Dresden city became the Kingdom of Saxony capital.
Napoleon also made Dresden an operations base during his Napoleonic Wars where he won a major victory in 1813 at the Battle of Dresden. During the 19th century, Dresden was a strong economic city where food processing, motor car manufacturing,
medical equipment manufacturing and banking took place.
By the early twentieth century, Dresden had become famous for its successful cigarette factories and camera works. Until 1933, the German city was the center of modern art in all Europe as well as being the first ever Free State of Saxony capital from 1918 to 1934.
It was during the twentieth century, however, that Dresden suffered its heaviest blow that is still felt to date. As the heart of art and manufacturing and communications, it suffered greatly when over 90 percent of its city center was destroyed by allied bombing on February 13, 1945.
Afterward, the historic buildings around the city were reconstructed. In fact, the perfection of the reconstruction and attention to detail will make you wonder whether the bombing really happened. The city center is quite compact and you can cover a good number of its highlights in 24 hours.
Where to visit
Begin at the Semperoper, or the Opera House’s outer plaza, for a satisfying walk-
ing tour. The rich and colorful exterior design is the stuff of every casual visitor with a guided tour in German and English also provided. There are music and opera performances every night and it’s a place to be if you have the time.
Zwinger Palace, close to the opera house, is a favorite site for many in the city of Dresden due to its ornate exterior in the Baroque style. Priceless pieces of Renaissance and Baroque art are housed in the Old Masters Picture Gallery, or the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. It is also a place to find the Nymphaeum with lots of nymphs and a wonderful Baroque fountain.
In the open plaza is the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, offering a 360-degree view of Dresden from its cupola. The bird’s eye view of Dresden from the top of the Frauenkirche is unforgettable.
If you have some more time, visit the Green Vault or Grünes Gewölbe to see the finest collection of royal treasures in all Europe or take a boat trip along River Elbe in a paddle steamer. You can end the day with a quick trip to the Pfund Molkerei (Pfund’s Dairy), once named the most beautiful of all milk shops globally by the Guinness Book of Records.
Bars and Restaurants
The Church of Our Lady or the Frauenkirche is at the heart of restaurants that surround it from all sides and the perfect spot to grab some dinner or a quick lunch. Ayers Rock is one of the restaurants nearby with an Australian theme, also one of the best places in Dresden to grab a bite and a drink. It has a long cocktail list and over 200 drinks with diverse beer brands on the tap, both Australian and German. The night life scene in Dresden is one of a kind. A vibrant young crowd often populates clubs and bars, for instance
along the Alaunstrasse within the Outer Neustadt. While there are so many bars and restaurants to pop in for a wonderful Dresden treatment, the Sophienkeller im Taschenbergpalais is worth every visit for three draught beers, meals and snacks in a cellar restaurant so unique that every staff dresses in colorful costumes of the 18th century.
Dresdner Stollen
Stollen is a fruit cake containing dried fruit and often marzipan and covered with sugar, powdered sugar or icing sugar. The cake is usually made with chopped candied fruit and/or dried fruit, nuts and spices. Stollen is a traditional German cake, usually eaten during the Christmas season, when it is called Weihnachtsstollen or Christstollen.
This most famous Christmas cake is said to originate from Dresden and today there are only 150 Dresden bakers that are allowed to produce the “official version,” which is distinguishable by a special seal depicting Augustus II the Strong, the Elector of Saxony from 1694-1733.
Each year the city holds a festival to celebrate the Stollen during the first week of Advent. A carriage parades the cake through the streets of Dresden to the Christmas market where it is ceremoniously cut into pieces using a special knife and distributed amongst the crowd in exchange for a small donation to charity. This event is symbolically reminiscent of custom began in 1730 by Augustus II the Strong.
