521st Air Mobility Operations Wing welcomes new commander

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing has welcomed its newest commander during the wing’s Change of Command ceremony in Hangar 5 on Ramstein Air Base, July 3.

During the ceremony, Col. Dan Cooley relinquished command of the 521 AMOW after serving as the unit’s 8th commander. Col. Jordan Norman acquired the guidon shortly after, symbolizing his acceptance of his new role as the 521 AMOW commander. In the midst of, the ceremony, Chief Master Sgt. Jeremiah Grisham handed over the responsibility of being the wing command chief to Chief Master Sgt. Scott Piper.

Maj. Gen. John Klein, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, presided over the 521 AMOW Change of Command ceremony.

During the ceremony, Klein stated, “The 5-2-1 team is on the leading edge of innovation and ongoing operations. You are developing the concepts which will enable our future success through contested logistics in the emerging era of great power competition … all the while, sustaining current operations — Col. Cooley and Chief Grisham led the way.”

In the last two years alone, the wing has moved 604,000 passengers and 303,000 tons of cargo over 43,000 missions.

“Finally, my deepest appreciation goes to the men and women of the 5-2-1,” stated Norman. “I know you have accomplished much under Col. Cooley’s leadership. Your work over these past few years had significant global impacts. I have firsthand experience with elements of your success as our combined teams worked together through late 2023 to set the theater for crisis across the Middle East. I was amazed by the work this team accomplished which utterly quelled an Iranian strike on a U.S. ally consisting of 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles, and 120 ballistic missiles.”

transportation services, expeditionary aircrew support and inter-theater aeromedical evacuation

Norman has now assumed command of the 521 AMOW, which consists of two groups, nine squadrons, 19 locations in 13 separate countries, spanning across 5,000 miles, five times zones and supports four combatant commands in three areas of responsibility.

Addressing the Airmen of the 521 AMOW, Cooley stated, “The world was watching, and you delivered. Strategic success for our nation is made possible, at the tactical level, by the effort you put forth every day. What you do matters.”

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, commonly referred to as the “en route,” has been no stranger to real world operations during Cooley’s tenure. During his command, the wing directly provided air mobility support to Türkiye earthquake relief, Pakistan flood-

ing, Sudan embassy evacuation, Israel-Hamas conflict, and much more. Under Cooley’s leadership, the wing earned 22 Major Command and higher awards and was the only unit in Air Mobility Command to be awarded the Meritorious Unit Award for 2023.

Introducing the new command team, Klein introduced Norman and Piper as, “Leaders with tactical expertise, operational acumen, and strategic depth uniquely prepared and

competitively selected to command the 521 AMOW at a pivotal moment in our Nation’s history.”

Norman comes from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, after being the commander of the 305th Operation Group. He commanded 800 officers, enlisted, and civilian Airmen charged with operating C-17 Globemaster III’s and KC-46 Pegasus’ aircraft in support of Combatant Commander objectives. He also maintained two airfields and

“I’m confident we’ll face additional challenges in an increasingly volatile security environment, but I am equally confident that, as a team, we will rise to those challenges and excel as they come,” stated Norman. “Over the next 2 years I am excited to see you showcase that the U.S. and our allies can DEPEND ON US. I’m proud and honored to be a part of your organization and I’m looking forward to working with each of you.”

THE HOUSING HYPE

Top 10 tid-bits for housing residents

The KMC Housing Office is dedicated to assisting you with friendly reminders to help with your home responsibilities. Remember, the key is not waiting until there is an issue to do something— observation/preventive measures will go a long way when it comes to the elimination of minor issues that could turn into larger ones.

These tid-bits should assist you with caring for your home, whether you are on- or off-base:

On-base

1. Remember not to hang anything from your home ceilings.

2. Please consider using the Self-Help Store at Ramstein and Vogelweh to ensure/maintain the quality and safety of your home.

3. If you have any issues within your residence that is beyond self-help, please call Family Housing Maintenance at 06371-4639510. As residents, you are responsible for the cleanliness and everyday maintenance of your home to include changing light bulbs, replacing sink stoppers or shower hoses, cleaning stove burners and basic pest control.

4. Remember to trim your trees and bushes to a height of 6ft. Keep your lawns mowed and presentable. If you see something, say something. Help make our community better.

Bonus on- and off-base

5. Ventilate your home daily for a minimum of twice a day for 20-30 minutes. Ventilating your home by opening windows helps prevent household mold. Cross ventilation is necessary, so interior doors must be opened along with windows on opposing sides.

Off-base

6. Are you experiencing home maintenance challenges? You should immediately talk with your landlord or call the KMC Housing Referral Office. Contact DSN 489-6643/COM 0631-5366643

7. We recommend that you perform (monthly) inspections of your home for routine maintenance issues. If any maintenance conditions do exist, immediately bring them to the attention of your landlord for repair/resolution.

8. Respect the off-base housing rules. Remember, German laws take precedence over U.S. laws while living in Germany.

9. If you have ceiling fans in your home, you should change the rotation of your ceiling fans twice a year to increase energy efficiency, putting less strain on your heating and cooling systems. In the summer, set the fans to rotate counterclockwise. This method of blade rotation will push the air down which creates a cool breeze.

10. If you need more information, or have questions/concerns with regards to maintenance in your home, please contact the 86 CES Housing Flight listed below:

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK

» Remember to deep clean your oven periodically, it will reach the desired temperature more quickly which conserves energy.

» It will also distribute heat in a much better, more efficient way compared to a dirty oven. This means that your food will be cooked more evenly, resulting in better tasting food!

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s deputy garrison manager’s farewell message to workforce

On June 11, USAG RheinlandPfalz employees gathered at the Rheinlander Community Center on Smith Barracks, Baumholder, to bid farewell to the outgoing deputy garrison manager, Jae Kim.

Kim, who has served in this role since December 2020, will soon begin his next assignment at the Pentagon, working for the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Environment — Installation Housing and Partnership Office.

“I want to thank each and every one of you for being here today,” he said. “It has truly been a privilege to be part of this wonderful community for 3.5 years.”

Kim emphasized the importance of departments working together to achieve common goals and supporting each other consistently.

“People who show up for events, for causes they believe in, and for people they care about — that's what life is all about. Ultimately, we all cherish when others show up for us.”

He praised the Baumholder community for its active participation and encouraged continued cooperation.

“Every major unit in Baumholder, participating and showing up at events, is what makes this community great. I hope everyone will continue to work together, help each other, and support each other's initiatives.”

Col. Reid Furman, the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz commander, also addressed the attendees, commending Kim's dedication and impact.

“Leaders often talk about relationships, and Jae exemplifies this,” Furman said. “His 3.5 years of engaged and invested leadership have greatly benefited our community. Wherever you go in Baumholder — whether it may be the Child Development Center, the schools, the auto skills shop, or ACS — they know Jae because he’s always present, building a special bond with the community.”

Furman expressed his gratitude for Kim’s service and dedication to the Rheinland-Pfalz community.

“Thank you, Jae, for what you have built here,” he said, “but most of all, for what you are passing on.”

435th AGOW unveils COG: Shift towards enhanced operational capability

The Air and Space Communications Group has been redesignated as the 435th Communications Operations Group. This change reflects a strategic shift from a primarily maintenance-focused role to a more active, operational stance, highlighting the group's evolving responsibilities and capabilities in modern warfare.

June 27, when the group was redesignated from the 435th Air & Space Communications Group to the 435th Communications Operations Group, marked the next chapter of this storied unit. The event attended by members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, marked an evolution for the group, emphasizing its commitment to supporting front-line operations more directly and effectively. Over its 72-year history, the 435th Communications Operations Group has been redesignated nine times, each time to better align the organization to its core mission and operational requirements.

“With the redesignation, we’re shifting from being seen just as communicators and maintainers to being integral players in operational strategy,” said Master Sergeant Thaddeus Kloss 435thCOG section chief. “This aligns with our enhanced focus on supporting warfighters directly, tying every-

thing from logistics to real-time combat operations.”

The move follows the development of new technologies such as the mobile digital infrastructure vehicle. This vehicle is designed to support the sensor to shooter link, crucial for operations across multiple network domains, and ensuring intelligent and diligent spectrum management. This is one of many new systems the 435th COG will look to prioritize as it shifts to its more operationally focused mission.

“By adopting this new name, the Group underscores its commitment to advancing operational capabilities and meeting the dynamic challenges of today’s security environment,” said Col. John

J. Riester, 435th COG commander. “This redesignation operationalizes effective and resilient communications across all domains.”

This redesignation also signifies a broader trend within the military to adapt and evolve in response to changing warfare dynamics and technological advancements. 435th COG is set to play a crucial role in this transition, leveraging communications technologies to support and drive Air Force operations.

“The name change better aligns the group with its current mission to provide agile, resilient, and adaptable C2 to the forward edge,” said Chief Master Sgt. Chet Tonge, 435th COG senior enlisted leader. “The 435th Communications Operations Group will advance the

Combined Forces Air Component Command’s operational objectives by delivering a multitude of secure communications links across multiple domains, anytime, anywhere.”

The mission of the 435th COG is to operate, extend, and defend world-class, deployable, sustainable communications and intelligence operations support at the forward edge of battle.

The COG’s new mandate underscores a strategic shift towards greater operational engage -

ment, ensuring that communications and operational planning are not just supportive but are central to mission success. The group’s evolution from Air and Space Communications Group to Communications Operations Group represents a significant step in aligning communications expertise with the operational imperatives of modern combat scenarios, preparing the Air Force to meet future challenges with enhanced agility and effectiveness.

Decorating Kindergraves for Independence Day

“Welcome to Rheinland-Pfalz!” Program Coordinator

Students from BurgGymnasium Kaiserslautern helped to maintain the American children's graves in the Kaiserslautern cemetery on Wednesday, July 3. Together with the German-American Club Kaiserslautern, the Chiefs Group Ramstein, the Sergeant Morales Club Kaiserslautern and other volunteers, the memorial was beautifully decorated for the 4th of July. German and American volunteers got to know each other

better and enjoyed working together for a good cause.

From 1952 to 1971 American infants, born at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, who passed away at birth or shortly after, were laid to rest at the main cemetery in Kaiserslautern (Waldfriedhof) adjacent to U.S. Army Daenner Kaserne. At that time, many military members did not have the capability or funds to send the bodies to the United States.

A wonderful commitment and a great sign of the close German-American ties in the area.

7451st Medical Operational Readiness Unit takes charge of Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center

The 7450th Medical Operational Readiness Unit Det 64 relinquished authority of the Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to the 7451st Medical Operational Readiness Unit Det 2, during a transfer of authority ceremony July 8.

The DWMMC is responsible for tracking all patients being evacuated from Combatant Commands and serves as the permanent link between the combat theater and continental United States medical facilities. The DWMMC originated from the LRMC Patient Administration Division Aeromedical Evacuation office.

The transfer of authority ceremony was officiated by U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Ted Brown, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center commander.

“It is an absolute pleasure to celebrate an outstanding commander, and for that matter, team, in Col. Enrique Luna and the 7450th Medical Operational Unit,” said Col. Brown. “This team hit it out of the park. And it is in no small part due to the leadership of Col. Luna and Sgt. 1st Class Hector Angulo. During their tenure over the past nine months, this team received over 200 inbound flights, processed the evacuation of 1,143 service members from three continents, and returned nearly 350 of those patients back to duty in their respective theaters. They integrated across all LRMC’s service lines and streamlined patient regulating functions, thereby increasing efficiency, and improving patient care.”

The 7450th Medical Operational Readiness Unit Det 64 based out of Aurora, Colorado, arrived at LRMC in October 2023. Over the course of the ninemonth deployment to Germany, the unit provided health assessments, immunizations, lab services, and behavioral health services to ensure thousands of deploying and redeploying personnel were physically and mentally fit to return to duty.

“It’s hard to believe that our nine months serving here in Germany have quickly come to an end,” said Col. Enrique Luna, commander of the 7450th Medical Operational Readiness Unit. “But those nine months were spent serving at the best regional medical center and on the best legacy

Assuming control of the LRMC Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center from the 7450th is the 7451st Medical Operational Readiness Unit Det 2 based out of Joint Base LewisMcChord, Washington.

“It is my privilege to accept responsibility for the Deployed Warrior Medical Management Center here at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center,” said Lt. Col. Stacey Rodriguez, commander of the 7451st Medical Operational Readiness Unit.

“Over the next nine months, the 7451st will support our nation’s deployed war fighters, identify, and capitalize on opportunities to refine processes and develop ourselves, and deliver safe, quality care. Our presence today is a testament to our dedication, resilience, and sacrifice to serve when called upon. The histories of the Deployed Warrior

Medical Management Center and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center are both unique, and quite frankly, special in the support of three geographic commands that

serve nearly half of the world. Through humility, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose we will overcome every obstacle, meet every patient need, and return

home with a renewed sense of having contributed to Army Medicine’s most foundational mission — to conserve the fighting strength.”

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center team leads medical readiness exercise in Ghana

A 25-member team composed of U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force medical, veterinary, and dental personnel from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Dental Health ActivityRheinland Pfalz, Public Health Command Europe, the USAF 86th Medical Squadron, and the North Dakota National Guard, participated in a three-week medical readiness exercise, or MEDREX, together with members of the Ghana Armed Forces, May 12-31, at the 37th Military Hospital in Accra, Ghana.

“As the only Role 4 military medical facility supporting three combatant commands, the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center team was proud to lead a very successful engagement in the AFRICOM AOR with our Ghanaian partners of the 37th Military Hospital,” said Col. (Dr.) Ted Brown, commander of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

“Just as important as the tremendous benefits gained by both the U.S. and Ghanaian medical teams, the relationships established and the partnerships forged will pay dividends for both the 37th and LRMC, and our respective medical systems, in the years to come.”

U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Claude Burnett, director of Global Health Engagements and Clinical Readiness for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, together with USAF Lt. Col. (Dr.) Mary Stuever, director of trauma for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Sgt. 1st Class Teresa Bocanegra, the medical readiness exercise non-commissioned officer-in-charge, coordinated and led the 25-member U.S. medical team throughout the three-week hands-on medical exercise.

“Participating in the planning

and execution of MEDREX-24 was deeply gratifying and meaningful to me,” said Burnett. “Witnessing, firsthand, the culmination of a yearslong planning by a multinational team to deliver medical care to the Accra community, while enhancing medical readiness and advancing the relationship between two partnering militaries, was extremely rewarding. It really makes you feel like part of something larger than just your medical specialty or area of expertise.”

According to senior Army medical officials, the multinational team collaborated and shared best medical practices while delivering care to patients in the local Accra commu-

nity. Their medical services encompassed a broad spectrum, including general surgery, anesthesiology, operating room procedures, OB/ GYN, emergency room services and bio-engineering equipment repair. Also included in the treatment provided by the U.S. military medical team were OB/GYN services led by Lt. Col. Ciara Rakestraw, LRMC assistant deputy chief of clinical services, as well as a variety of routine and emergency dental procedures.

“Our dental team conducted 252 direct patient encounters in the dental clinic and 78 procedures by our oral and maxillofacial surgery team,” said Maj. Ryan Allred, officer-in-charge of the Landstuhl

expanding the scope of support and addressing the overall health needs of the communities they serve.

“Our Army veterinary team provided medical care and treatment to Ghanaian military working dogs as well as family pets, including dogs and cats,” said Army Cpt. Javier Pino, an Army veterinarian assigned to Veterinary Readiness Activity Rheinland-Pfalz. “All together, we treated a total of 62 animals. Being part of this MEDREX was an amazing opportunity. It allowed us to work alongside amazing soldiers from another nation and to be able to learn and exchange knowledge with them.”

Over the course of the threeweek exercise, the U.S. military medical team provided care to more than 950 patients for a variety of medical issues, with the focus on trauma/surgical care, dental care, veterinary medicine, and women’s (OB/GYN) healthcare.

Specialty Dental Clinic. “Working with them side-by-side in the dental clinic, we were able to build strong bonds with our Ghanaian counterparts. I’m very thankful and honored for the opportunity to have been part of this MEDREX.”

This marks the first year that veterinary services were part of the MEDREX program. According to exercise participants, the inclusion of veterinary capabilities underscores the commitment to

“During the MEDREX, our team completed 5 trauma, 7 general surgery, 18 oral and maxillofacial, 120 dental and 15 OB/GYN surgeries/procedures,” added Burnett. “Overall, our team treated approximately 950 patients. There was a wide variety of cases seen, including trauma, general surgery, dental (including oral maxillofacial surgery), internal medicine, OB/GYN, critical care (ICU), emergency room, anesthesia, wound care, etc. Additionally, our Army veterinary team completed more than 60 procedures involving military working dogs, family pets and farm animals.”

Defense Logistics Agency cybersecurity director to umpire in College World Series

Linus Baker got the call he’d been hoping for three weeks ago when traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, to umpire at the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s baseball tournament.

After 20 years as a college baseball umpire, including the last seven years in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the NCAA umpire coordinator called Baker to tell him he’d been selected as one of only eight umpires for the Men’s College World Series, which begins June 14 in Omaha, Nebraska.

“He simply said to me, ‘Welcome to Omaha,’ and I tell you, I teared up. I rarely do that,” said Baker, director of cybersecurity at the Defense Logistics Agency. “After putting in the amount of work that I have and getting so close to being selected these last four or five years, it was very emotional for me.”

Baker said there are over 3,000 umpires in Division I baseball, and 96 of them are selected to umpire NCAA post-season games, which include the opening round, known as the regionals, and the second round, called super regionals. Baker has umpired 14 regionals, five super regionals and was an alternate for the College World Series last year.

The competition to be an umpire in the CWS is stiffer than it was when he started two decades ago, Baker said, because the pool of umpires with professional experience in minor and major league baseball has grown.

fit mentally and physically.

“When you have a passion for something, you go above and beyond to be good at it,” he said, noting that it can be tough when you have a full-time job and a family because it requires a lot of traveling.

The Division I baseball committee bases CWS umpire selections on evaluations and a formal nomination process, Baker said.

His love for baseball began when he was 5 years old, and it grew as he played throughout high school and during his four years at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Georgia, where he also graduated with a computer science degree.

After college, Baker spent four years in the Army as an intelligence analyst at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was also the assistant baseball coach at Fort Knox Middle High School.

His umpire journey began when he moved to Virginia after he finished his enlistment in the Army. He saw a local newspaper ad looking for umpires with youth baseball programs. Through networking, Baker later started working higher-level baseball.

“Only three of the eight umpires working this year’s CWS are amateurs like me. The remaining are ex-professionals who have been umpires in at least Triple-A baseball with formal training at an umpire school,” Baker said. “I never had that. That’s the kind of competition I’m in.”

Being passed over led him to rededicate himself, he said, using it as incentive to stay

“It just worked out where those who assign high school teams noticed me, and then, that led to other umpires telling me I should consider an advanced clinic in Florida, so I could potentially work college baseball,” he said. “I attended, and the next thing I know, I’m umping for college games and learning all kinds of new things.”

ABC IN KMC: Pennsylvania Deitsh

The Kaiserslautern Military Community is located in and around the county, right in the heart of the Pfalz (Palatinate). Anyone who has learned high German can certainly refer to the fact that the strong dialect spoken in the region is far from anything learned in German class. A German from the north may have trouble understanding speakers with strong dialect. But, did you know that there are about 100,000 people, mainly in Pennsylvania and Ohio that speak, or a variation of, this dialect?

The Institut für Pfälzische Geschichte und Volkskunde, Institute for Palatinate History and Ethnology, is based in Kaiserslautern and has records of about 300,000 emigrants from the region who emigrated from 1650 onwards, mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Palatinate emigration was primarily driven by a quest for religious freedom, economic opportunity, and escape from political turmoil. Some emigrants went to South America, Africa and even Australia in later years, but the majority fled to America, such as religious minorities, including Mennonites, Amish, and various Protestant groups that sought refuge from persecution. Additionally, economic hardships, such as crop failures and oppressive taxation, pushed many to seek better prospects abroad.

Once in America, many settled in rural areas, establishing tight-knit farming communities that retained elements of their German heritage and language or local dialect. The Palatinate, or Pfälzisch, dialect is a mixture of Middle High German (spoken in the Middle Ages), French and Dutch influence, and local peculiarities.

One of the legacies of the Palatinate emigration is the preservation of the Pennsylvania German dialect, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch or Pennsylvania Deitsh. This distinctive language continues to be spoken by descendants of Palatinate immigrants in pockets of Pennsylvania and beyond. While its usage has declined over the years, efforts to preserve and

promote Pennsylvania German culture persist through language classes, cultural events, and heritage organizations.

As an example a Pfälzer in the region might say (also in variations) “Isch hann, isch hunn, isch hab e Grumbeersagg” (German: Ich habe einen Kartoffelsack). A speaker of Pennsylvania Deitsh would probably understand that the speaker has a potato sack. The Amish tradition of Rumspringa, where adolescents gain permission to venture out and experience greater society, derives from the German verb (he)rumspringen, meaning to jump around.

Popular dishes such as Pfälzer Saumagen (stuffed pig stomach), Latwersch (plum jam), Grummbeersupp (potato soup), Dampnurrle (steamed dumplings), Brodwerscht (bratwurst) and traditional tasty baked goods are commonly still prepared there

today. Many small towns celebrate German or Palatinate festivals throughout the year to keep traditions alive and young people interested in their roots take classes to (re)learn the dialect and popular songs.

The small community of Kutztown in eastern Pennsylvania, also known as Kutzeschteddel, with its 4,100 inhabitants, is famous for its annual festival. The nine-day event draws visitors from around the world and is the oldest continuous folklife festival in the United States. Visitors can experience insight into traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch, see talented craftsmen weaving baskets, carpenters and blacksmiths demonstrating traditional skills, enjoy typical music and taste delicious baked goods, sausages and wines.

Many of the emigrants from the Palatinate maintained their homeland dialect and held close ties to

role in the American Revolution, rallying his fellow Palatinate immigrants to the cause of independence. Conrad Weiser, a diplomat and interpreter, facilitated peaceful relations between colonists and Native American tribes.

Isidor Straus from Otterberg served as a congressman and became co-owner of Macy’s Department Store in New York City. Thomas Nast, born in Landau, arrived with his family at the age of six and became one of the most influential political cartoonists of the 19th century. He is best known for his depictions of the Republican Party elephant and the Democratic Party donkey. Nast’s keen eye for social justice also found expression in his powerful portrayals of issues such as slavery, corruption, and civil rights, earning him widespread acclaim and he is famous for creating a drawing of “Santa Claus,” based on the Protestant character of “Belznickel,” later instrumentalized and colored in red by the Coca Cola Company.

their relatives at home. A newspaper called “Der Pfälzer in Amerika” was founded in New York in 1880 by the brothers Voelcker from Edenkoben. The paper was intended to keep immigrants informed about their homeland from 1884 to 1917. Original copies of the original newspaper are kept at the IPGV archives. Another paper entitled “Hiwwe wie driwwe” was established in the 1990s and published in Palatinate dialect. In addition, the County of Kaiserslautern has enjoyed close ties to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for sixty years. The Palatinate emigration produced several notable individuals, such as Johann Jacob Zimmerman, a skilled artisan and architect credited with designing iconic Pennsylvania Germanstyle barns and homes. Peter Muhlenberg, a clergyman and military leader, played a pivotal

In addition, scores of adventurous musicians from the “Musikantenland” in the region set sail to the New World to seek their fortunes and founded their own orchestras. Ensembles such as the “Mackenbacher Wandermusikanten” were rather popular in areas with high German descendent populations. Some of the wandering musicians returned to their hometown, but some stayed and even became famous throughout America. Heinrich Jacob from Mackenbach was one of these musicians who emigrated to New York and was successful under his artist name “Bill Henry” and his band called “Headliners.” Karl Schirra from Miesenbach played in ensembles in Boston, Brooklyn and Philadelphia after World War I.

If you are, or think that you are a descendent of a Palatinate immigrant, you may wish to contact the IPGV. It is currently working on enlarging its data base to simplify research for those interested in tracing their roots. It also collects original handwritten letters from emigrants to their families at home and has a library with 30,000 books. 1. There are two ways up, and at least one is fun(icular)

If you’re into medieval exercise, then the walk from the city center to the castle can be fun. Visitors work their way up a concrete path that goes straight up the hill — none of this newfangled constant switchback stuff. Which means that, by the time you finish covering the 260-foot vertical distance, you’ll be breathing like a knight dressed in chain mail.

A less sweaty option involves taking the funicular railway from the Kornmarkt to the Castle. It’s fun, easy, and riders can also buy a ticket that includes castle admission. As a bonus, you can shake your head at the struggling walkers below.

2. There is an enormous wine vat

You may have heard of the Heidelberg Tun, which was built in 1751 and which looks like something called a Tun would look. It is a massive, 58,000-gallon, wooden wine vat that hasn’t held as much wine as one might think (because, honestly, lugging that much wine up an 18th century hill would have been very difficult).

Yet, the Tun is a must-see. In its way, it is a marvel of human ingenuity. And it makes the mind wander to all sorts of unexpected places. As in, how was this Tun the third one that the medieval royals built, and why did they think the first two (both of which were also massive) were too small?

3. A cup of water allegedly killed a court jester

It is true that, prior to the 20th century, water was more dangerous than wine or beer (think cholera and a lack of motorized vehicles). Still, one has to feel sorry for poor Perkeo, an 18th-century court jester for Prince-Elector Carl Philipp von der Pfalz. According to legend, Perkeo was an expert wine drinker who could, ahem, pol-

ish off thousands of liters of wine without problem.

And so it was, then, that drinking a cup of water supposedly did him in. No one is quite sure what exactly happened, but it is certain that the prankster was missed by the Prince-Elector and his hangers-on. No one is sure, either, whether the ghost of Perkeo is still haunting the Tun…

4. The castle is kind of a naturalist’s paradise

There are protected animals that make their homes in the Castle. Bats love it, including the tiny pipistrelle bat, as well as the large mouse-eared bat. If you’re lucky,

you can also spot European toads, Alpine newts, and fire salamanders.

Heidelberg Castle also contains a Paleozoic-era rock outcropping, known as a geotope, that geology buffs rave about. Toss in beautiful trees, manicured gardens and other greenery, and the castle starts to feel even more magical.

5. It has an awesome festival every summer

We’re talking plays, musicals, concerts, illuminations, artisans, food, and drinks! And, of course, all of it is set in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. As a bonus, the fun lasts for most of June and July.

So if you’re thinking about a summer visit, do a little research in advance. Being festive at the Heidelberg Castle Festival is an unforgettable experience.

6. The castle guides wear costumes

Living history may seem a little cringeworthy sometimes. After all, we live in the age of jeans and t-shirts. Who needs ruffled collars, bonnets, knee-high leather boots or 17th century dresses, anyway?

Oho! The guides at Heidelberg Castle, that’s who! And if you opt for a guided tour, you won’t regret it for an instant. The costumed guides are knowledgeable, funny, and will let you see the castle in a completely different light. When you’re done with a guided tour, you’ll walk away with a whole new appreciation for the complexity and majesty of the place.

Guided tours in English are offered hourly every day from April to early November, and daily between November and March. Cost is €6 for adults.

7. You probably won’t get hit by lightning

Okay, the logic here is admittedly shaky, but it’s based on the fact that lightning has already struck the castle… twice. The two most famous lightning strikes — in the 16th and 18th centuries, respectively — did a lot of damage: both of them led to fires and the subsequent destruction of many structures.

The castle was rebuilt both times, of course. And those efforts led, in part, to the incredible place that is so famous today!

Getting to Heidelberg Castle

By car, Heidelberg is an hour from Kaiserslautern, an hour from Wiesbaden, and 1.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check with Deutsche Bahn for train details.
