Members of the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden community gathered recently at the Army Family Action Plan conference to elevate and work through issues impacting life here. Attendees discussed 87 different issues at the conference, out of 110 brought forth prior to the event. Issues not discussed were handled through ICE or other appropriate systems. Col. Todd J. Fish, USAG Wiesbaden commander, opened the conference by welcoming attendees and thanking them for volunteering their time to help the community.

“Thank you for taking this on,” Fish said. “AFAP has done some great things. It’s a powerful tool to bring issues forward.” Fish said AFAP is important because it brings the community’s voices together, allowing issues to be raised with a collective voice. Some issues brought forward at the conference included: • Place bus monitors on all Department of Defense Education Activity school buses. • Accessibility of facilities for those with disabilities. • Making the military and fam-

Holiday Assistance Program provides for families By Karl Weisel

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Family and MWR Marketing

Sharing, goodwill, joy — these are just a few of the hallmarks of the holiday season. But for financially strapped families the holidays can mean struggling to make ends meet. That’s where Army Community Service’s Holiday Assistance Program enters the picture. “The community here is excellent — they’re awesome in giving,” said Matt Golonka, ACS’s Financial Readiness Program manager. “This program really embodies community service — it’s the community that makes this happen; we’re just the facilitators. “There are definitely no scrooges out there,” Golonka added, explaining that in past years Wiesbaden military community members have been extremely forthcoming in helping those experiencing financial constraints during the holidays. Eligible families — including Soldiers of all ranks, civilians WG1 through 5, GS1 Step 10 and below, GS2 Step 5 or below, GS3 Step 3 or below, NF1 or 2 with annual salary of $28,000 or less and NA, NL or NS employees with an hourly salary of $12.55 or less — can apply for Commissary vouchers for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and gifts for children under age 18 for Christmas. Holiday Assistance Program applications can be received from the chain of command, picked up at Wiesbaden ACS in Bldg. 7780 in Hainerberg Housing, or downloaded and printed from the

Applicatiosn must be completed, endorsed by commander or designated authority and submitted to ACS by 3:30 p.m. Nov. 14 to be considered in time for Thanksgiving or by Dec. 9 in time for Christmas. Individuals applying for Thanksgiving vouchers will automatically be entered in the Angel Tree gift program. Golonka stressed that first-line supervisors, first sergeants and commanders are vital in identifying families that might need help during the holidays. Anyone can nominate a family for

assistance; it does not have to be the individual in need. “Sometimes people may be reluctant to ask for help,” he said. “It’s really the first-line supervisors’ responsibility to identify and encourage their people to apply. I think the number of applicants could be greatly increased if first-line supervisors would be more aware of their Soldiers’ and civilians’ financial situation.” “It’s very important to give lowranking individuals the chance to get that special gift for their children,” said Danna Butterfield, ACS’s Army Emergency Relief officer. “We had about 300 families take part in the program

last year.” Golonka and Butterfield also stressed that it’s important for families who apply for assistance to be as specific as possible in their application — providing ages of children and other details. “If they’re asking for clothes, make sure to specify sizes.” It’s also critical that they pick up their vouchers or gifts after being notified by ACS. “They need to ensure they provide the right point of contact, phone number, etc. and make sure it’s legible so that we can reach them,” Golonka said. As in past years, ACS will set up Holiday Angel Trees throughout the community Nov. 25 to Dec. 19 whereby community members can select a tag with a child’s gift request and then purchase the gift to be provided at Christmas. Unwrapped gifts with the tag attached should be dropped off at ACS or any Angel Tree collection box by Dec. 18. Angel Trees will be set up on Clay Kaserne at the Postal Service Center, Andrews Federal Credit Union and Community Bank; and in Hainerberg Housing at the Main Exchange, Commissary and Community Bank. “We’ll put up the trees the day after Thanksgiving,” Golonka said. “It’s a great feeling giving and helping those families that can’t afford things for their children,” said Butterfield. “It’s a generous tradition.” For more information about the Holiday Assistance or Angel Tree Programs, call ACS at civ (0611) 143-548-9201 or go to wiesbaden.armymwr.com.

The event kicks off the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s CFC-Os 2016 fund raising campaign and is sponsored by unit CFC reps and the Wiesbaden Education Center. This year’s goal is $250,000. Serving overseas often provides a unique opportunity to see firsthand the hardships people face around the world such as poverty, lack of educational opportunities, limited access to medical

care, and environmental exploitation. The CFC-O gives you the opportunity to change lives, both locally and internationally, by giving to your favorite charities. In 2015, the campaign raised nearly $7 million to help those in need, demonstrating the selfless generosity of the overseas Department of Defense

uniformed and civilian personnel. By contributing to one of the thousands of charities through the CFC-O, you will touch the lives of those most vulnerable. Here are just a few of the ways your donation can make a difference: • $10 provides two vaccines for a puppy or kitten. • $20 provides a hot meal to a struggling military family. • $58 teaches a child or adult to read. • $75 sends eight exam tables to establish remote medical care clinics. • $80 provides refugee children with a safe place to play. • $100 provides two tool kits that help

families rebuild their lives. Contributors may make their pledge in one of three ways: • Electronic payroll allotments through DFAS myPay • eGiving payments using a credit card, debit card or electronic bank transfer • Traditional paper Pledge Cards. Local national employees from across U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden are receiving basic first-aid training from the German Red Cross. In the training, employees learn about CPR, wound preparation, how to check the body for injuries, how to protect themselves in a car accident and how to get a person out of a car, said Hartwig Knorr, safety specialist with the garrison.

• Volunteer and job opportunities for high school students. • Extension of the summer hiring program outside of the summer break period. • Lack of food options for Soldiers in the barracks on Clay Kaserne.

“These classes give our LN work force the ability to react in case of an incident in their work areas,” he said. They are also taught how to take action in case of a poisoning incident and how to remove a motorcycle helmet when a person is injured. They get training on burns, choking, blackout, electric shock, head injury, stab wound, bandaging, scalding and reporting of an accident. “The first-aid responder should help until the ambulance or fire department has arrived,” Knorr said.

• Donation of Soldier’s use or lose leave to others who may need it. • Extended shuttle bus hours for shift workers. Fish closed the conference by addressing every issue individually, briefing the community on the status of those the command was already aware of. “You have taken two days, and came

up with great ideas,” he said at the closing. Mary Cheney, Wiesbaden AFAP coordinator, said the items discussed at the conference would either be handled locally if possible, or sent forward to the next AFAP level. “This is not the end of the process, but the beginning” said Cheney. “Even if it doesn’t impact you tomorrow, it will impact someone, someday.”

Cuban cigar ban relaxed for US citizens overseas Story by Robert Szostek USEUCOM Customs PAO

Persons subject to U.S. jurisdiction may now buy Cuban-origin merchandise, including alcohol and tobacco products, while in a third country for personal consumption. These products may be consumed while in a third country or imported into the United States as accompanied baggage. “Other countries do not ban Cuban products and items such as Cuban cigars or rum have been on sale all over Europe for years,” said Tim Sellman, director of the USEUCOM Customs and Border Clearance Agency. Now, new changes to the Cuban Assets Control Regulations mean that U.S. citizens can legally consume these products while overseas or take them to the U.S. subject to the same limits as for any other foreign-made items. As an American living overseas, you can claim either “returning resi-

dent” or “nonresident” exemptions with customs when traveling on leave or TDY. “These exemptions apply to the foreign-made items you bought overseas,” Sellman added. Under the “nonresident” exemption, all personal effects are duty-free but you have to bring them back to Europe with you when you return. “A nonresident may also import $100-worth of foreign-made goods duty-free as gifts, one liter of alcoholic beverages, and either 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars or two kilograms of smoking tobacco for personal use,” Sellman explained. An additional 100 cigars may be taken under the gift exemption. As “returning residents,” travelers can take foreign-made items to the States but only the first $800 of their value would be duty-free. This applies to each family member, so a family of two would have a $1600 exemption. The advantage is that

these articles can remain in the States. Gifts, one liter of alcoholic beverages, and no more than 100 cigars and 200 cigarettes may also be included in the $800 exemption. SHARP tour connects victim advocates to resources Story and photo by Amy L. Bugala

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

It’s 1 a.m. A victim advocate receives a call on the 24/7 line. The person says, “I have been sexually assaulted and I want a forensic exam.” “What do you do?” This was one of many “what-if” scenarios that sparked discussions during a Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program resource tour hosted by the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden SHARP Program Oct. 14. The tour, facilitated by SHARP Program Manager Bill Mottley, provided an overview of the USAG Wiesbaden services and resources that can come into play when a Victim Advocate or Sexual Assault Response Coordinator responds to a case of sexual assault. “VAs are trained to go into response mode, and when they do, they need to know how to get the resources they need to manage the case and support the victims,” Mottley said. “We don’t want that moment to be the first time a Victim Advocate is seeing the SAFE room at the clinic, an interview room at CID, or the inside of the court house.” During the half-day tour, VAs from Ansbach, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden had a chance to visit facilities and learn

from subject matter experts working with Legal Services, the Health Clinic, Behavioral Health and the Criminal Investigation Division. At the court house VAs met Capt. Emily Lorenzo, Wiesbaden’s Special Victim Council. Lorenzo explained how a SVC can help VAs problem solve while working a case. “Victim clients may decide at some point that they want their own personal attorney to help them through this process,” said Lorenzo. “We help explain the military justice process and any personal legal issues related to the sexual assault.” At the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic participants were shown a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam room, or SAFE room, and were explained how to minimize any victim delays when a forensic exam is requested. Participants also visited the new location of the Educational and Developmental Intervention Services. There, clinical social workers explained how behavioral services can benefit both the victims and VAs as well as the best way to set up an appointment when victims want to speak to a counselor. At the Criminal Investigation Division, VAs learned what to expect during the interview process and how to best prepare a victim. “Everywhere you go it’s different,”

Rachel Phillips (far right), sexual assault response coordinator for the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade, speaks to a group of victim advocates about the benefits of having a Medical Treatment Facility in Wiesbaden, during a portion of the SHARP advocate resource tour at the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Oct. 14. said Rachel Phillips, SARC for the 66th Military Intelligence Brigade. “This tour helps acclimate new Victim Advocates to the area and meet key points of contact so they feel more comfortable and familiar with the process,” she said. Staff Sgt. Aleksey Moiseyenkov, a former full-time Victim Advocate at Fort Meade, Md., explained why knowing the process is so important. “It’s really rewarding to take someone from victim to survivor,” said Moiseyenkov who is now assigned to

the 24th Military Intelligence Battalion, 66th MI Bde. “A victim is vulnerable and broken and they don’t know what will happen next. It’s important for victim advocates to know the steps and these briefings helped explain it step-by-step.” All SARC and VAs received 3.5 hours of continuing education towards recertification for participating in the tour. News and features Basement renovations set to begin on Hainerberg Story and photos by Amy L. Bugala

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs

Just as the last fall harvests come to an end and temperatures begin to cool, a new crop is getting ready to be planted around the Hainerberg housing community this winter. Rows and rows of shipping containers will soon be sown to support the temporary storage needs of residents while their buildings undergo much needed and requested basement renovations. “Approximately 15 years ago the group laundry facilities were moved into the kitchens or annexes of each apartment leaving empty, unassigned common areas in these basements,” said John Groh, engineer technician for the Directorate of Public Works, Housing Facility Branch. “Unassigned areas are challenging to maintain and can become a magnet for abandoned household items.” The new configurations, which vary from building to building, eliminate common areas and maximize the entire basement creating dedicated and secure personal storage units. “The project creates more useable storage space per residential unit,” said Groh. Each basement will take approximately six months to complete. Work includes gutting and reconfiguring the space, plastering, painting and installation of LED motion-sensor controlled lighting. Metal sheeting will replace chain link fencing or

in some cases wood slat doors which allowed residential property to be seen by other tenants and maintenance personnel. During the renovation, items currently stored in the basements will need to be relocated says Groh. Each residential unit will be assigned a 20-foot container that will be located near their building. The containers will have lighting and be secured with a padlock, but will not be climate controlled. The Directorate of Public Works, Housing Facility Branch will be notifying residents of the construction timeline for their building which includes issuing keys for their container and ensuring their own basement items are moved before construction begins. A contractor is scheduled to assist residents with moving personal property; however, residents can move their own items approximately one week after receiving their keys. A total of 79 buildings which house 423 apartments will receive the upgrades with four full basements being completed every three weeks. More than 150 shipping containers will be required at the height of the construction and will be in housing areas for approximately six to 18 months. Where possible the containers will be placed on grassy sections along the sidewalk. Where there are limiting factors, such as potential damage to tree roots, containers will be placed in parking areas. The renovation project will begin in January 2017 and continue through September 2018.

The six shipping containers located on Arizonastrasse in Hainerberg housing are to support basement renovations currently in progress. More than 150 containers will be required for the 18-month project.

The basement upgrades will reconfigure the entire space to provide dedicated and secure personal storage space for residents in Hainerberg housing. Metal sheeting will replace old chain link or wood slat doors and padlocks. WASHINGTON — Surveys show Americans respect the U.S. military more than most institutions in the country, in part, because it is viewed as non-partisan. Service members and DoD personnel need to keep it that way. Service members and DoD civilians swear an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. It doesn’t matter who is elected or what party that person represents. DoD personnel will follow the lawful orders of the commander in chief.

There is a long tradition of being apolitical in the American military. No one knew what party General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower belonged to while he served in the military. In 1948, President Harry S Truman told Eisenhower he would step down if Ike decided to run as a Democrat. The general waved that offer off, and in 1952, ran and won as a Republican. In a more recent example, Army Gen. Colin L. Powell waited until he was retired to declare himself a Republican and serve as the secretary of state. According to DoD Directive 1344.10 and service regulations, active-duty personnel may not engage in partisan political activities, and all military personnel should avoid the inference that their political activities imply or appear to imply DoD sponsorship, approval or endorsement of a political candidate, campaign or cause. Service members on active duty may not campaign for a partisan candidate, engage in partisan fundraising activities, serve as an officer of a partisan club or speak before a partisan gathering. Active-duty service members may, however, express their personal opinions on political candidates and issues, make monetary contributions to a political campaign or organization, and attend political events as a spectator when not in uniform.

Hatch Act

DoD civilians are restricted by law in the types of partisan activities they can engage in. It varies by grade, position and agency. The governing law is the Hatch Act of 1939. The purpose of the Hatch Act is to ensure that federal programs are administered in a nonpartisan fashion, to protect federal employees from political coercion in

the workplace, and to ensure that federal employees are advanced based on merit and not based on political affiliation, according to information on the U.S. Office of Special Counsel’s website. The Hatch Act has been amended several times since first passed in the Roosevelt Administration to cover changing circumstances — the rise of the Internet, for example. The act defines political activity as “an activity directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office or partisan political group.” Federal employees cannot solicit or receive political contributions. No one can participate in any political activities on government time or by using government equipment. Specifically, an employee may not send or forward political emails, post political messages to Facebook or engage in political tweeting on government time or government equipment, or while in a federal building [including when off duty], even if the employee is using a personal smartphone, tablet or computer.

Social Media

Social media is ubiquitous these days and the preferred method of communications for many Americans. Personnel may generally express their personal views on public issues or political candidates on social media just as they would be permitted to write a letter to the editor of a newspaper. But just like a letter, employees and service members must clearly indicate they are not speaking in an official capacity. Any posting must clearly and prominently state that the views expressed are those of the individual only, and not of the Defense Department. Active-duty military members and civilian employees in the more restricted group are prohibited from participating in partisan political activity. They can “follow” “friend” or “like” a political party or a candidate running for partisan office; they may not “share” or “re-tweet” comments or tweets from the Facebook page or twitter account of a political party or candidate running for partisan office. Political Activities and Members of the Armed Forces provides social media guidance for military members and Social Media and the Hatch Act offers advice to civilian employees on how to avoid violating the rules. General guidance on the Hatch Act may be found at the U.S. Office of Special Counsel’s website.

Students at Aukamm Elementary got a hands-on experience recently when a local retired engineer spent the day showing them how apple juice is made and helping them make their own. Prior to the juicing day, students visited a local apple farm to pick their fruit. Then with help from several volunteer parents, retired engineer Dietrich Kröger taught the students how to prepare the apples for juicing at the school, an activity Kröger has been doing for the last eight years. “It’s cold!” the children said of the water, as they rolled up their sleeves and washed the apples in large basins. The next step was to put the apples in the crusher. This step was the most fun, the children said afterward. They tossed apples in the top of the shredder as fast as they could, scooping them up with both hands. Then they watched, and pointed and giggled, as the apples came out of the bottom of the machine into a container all chopped up and mushy. Then it was on to the final step for pressing, or juicing. The children took turns cranking the huge lever as they watched the juice pour out into a bucket. Kindergarten teacher Clark Kuntz said it was a great learning experience for his students.“Children today don’t know where apple juice comes from.” He praised Kröger’s involve-

Kröger said he shares his time and knowledge as a hobby. “It’s just fun.” He has been teaching kids at U.S.Army Garrison Wiesbaden about nature during science week as well, where his talks center around nature themes and life in ponds and in the ground. And he does it all because he enjoys it. It was clear the children had fun too and likely won’t forget where apple juice comes from. “I love it!” said first grader Sarah Bulke as she tried the fresh juice. Others around her sipped their juice and agreed enthusiastically. “It’s sweeter than the apple juice at the store,” first grader Solimar Rivera said. “When you bite an apple, it tastes the same.”

No internal examination of the ear or eardrum was conducted. Just down the hall, staff from the Wiesbaden Dental Clinic conducted dental screenings which included visual inspections to check for cavities, assessment of overall oral hygiene, and any orthodontic needs. The exams are meant to detect larger than average dental problems and no x-rays were taken. “Going to the dentist can be stressful experience,” said Col. Chin Lin, pediatric dentist with the Wiesbaden Dental Clinic. “The screenings here are in a friendly,

The screenings are a good opportunity to remind parents that pediatric dental services are available here in the Wiesbaden Dental Clinic.

After the screenings, each student received an oral health grade from dentists Lin and Capt. Melissa McGrier. One being “good oral health”; two, “your child may have a cavity or other non-emergent problem”; or three, “call the dental clinic for a follow-on examination.”

The dental team has assessed more than 675 students between Aukamm Elementary and WMS with more screenings ahead at Hainerberg Elementary and Wiesbaden High School. Both vision and dental screenings varied based on the age of the students, and are not intended to replace regular dental check-ups and annual eye exams said the medical teams. Students were given a report of any findings and parents should follow-up with any recommendations. Dental appointments can be made for children of active duty service members (9 years old and above) at the Wiesbaden Dental Clinic by calling DSN 590-1515 or civ (06371) 9464-1515. All active duty dependents with Tricare Prime are eligible for one eye exam at the PX optometry clinic per year with Dr. Lindsey Kennedy and may schedule an appointment by calling civ (0611) 7238 6164. Or they may receive an eye exam at the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Optometry located on Clay Kaserne by calling central appointments civ (0637) 9464-5762 or DSN 590-5762.

Pharmacy, staff recognized for role in patient care By Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Pharmacists and technicians make invaluable contributions to patient care in hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, and other healthcare settings. National Pharmacy Week in October is an ideal time for the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic to acknowledge and celebrate their expertise in providing safe and effective medication use and to share those accomplishments with the community. Pharmacy week is also an opportunity to learn more about the services in Wiesbaden. The WAHC pharmacy dispenses over 80,000 prescriptions each year or about 350 prescriptions each day. The pharmacy honors prescriptions written by German providers when the proper requirements are met. 1. Providers must be an approved Tricare network provider. 2. All prescriptions must contain the medication, strength, quantity, and directions written clearly in English. (This is U.S. federal law requirement) All Tricare network approved providers have previously agreed to write prescriptions in the American format. Without these requirements, the pharmacy will not be able to fill the medication. The pharmacy recommends reminding your local German provider of the American prescription requirements. Prescription refills called in will be ready for pick up the following busi-

ness day by 11 a.m. Refill tickets are reserved for patients that submitted their medication refills over the phone or at the TricareOnline website the day before. These medications are filled by the pharmacy and can be picked up by 11 a.m. the following business day. The phone number below and call sequence will help connect you to prescription refills by phone.

New Pharmacy Hours

Over the past 12 months, the average total patient wait time at the pharmacy was less than nine minutes. To reduce the wait time, pharmacy staff recommend patients avoid the mid-day rush between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Starting Oct. 31, the pharmacy will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on routine business days and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on training holidays. The new times are in line with the new operating hours for the clinic – except, the clinic will close for routine training on the third Thursday morning of each month and open at 1 p.m.

WAHC opens enrollment to TRICARE Plus beneficiaries By Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic Beginning Oct. 29 the Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic will open TRICARE Plus enrollment to retirees, retire family members, and non-command sponsored active duty family members. A recent analysis determined the clinic has sufficient capacity to enroll additional beneficiaries. “We understand there are many retirees and retiree family members in our community that would like to receive their primary care at WAHC,” said Lt. Col. Nelson So, the WAHC commander. “We are pleased to be able to provide care for them and hope they choose WAHC as their medical home.” TRICARE Plus beneficiaries interested in enrolling to

the clinic will be required to complete a comprehensive health questionnaire. WAHC providers will review the questionnaire to determine whether WAHC has the capability to care for their healthcare needs or if they need to be referred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. TRICARE Plus beneficiaries enrolled to WAHC will be assigned a primary care manager to coordinate their care. Although the TRICARE Overseas Program is not required to make appointments with host nation providers for TRICARE Plus enrollees, the WAHC TRICARE service center will facilitate booking appointments on the network for TRICARE Plus enrollees. Please note that TRICARE

Plus doesn’t cover specialty care and does not guarantee access to specialty care at the military treatment facility where you are enrolled. Retirees who do not access WAHC within 18 months of enrollment, will be disenrolled from the clinic to allow other beneficiaries to access care at WAHC. Representatives from the TRICARE service center are scheduled to be on site at the Retiree Appreciation Day, Oct. 29 to answer questions about the enrollment process and provide enrollment paperwork to those interested. Patients with questions should contact the WAHC TRICARE service center at DSN 590-1302 or 06371-9464-1302 or stop by the clinic.

Retiree Appreciation Day

The Wiesbaden Army Health Clinic will provide basic medical and dental services from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the clinic during the Retiree Appreciation Day Oct. 29. The clinic will provide an overview of Army Wellness Center services and have a TRICARE desk located at the event in the Gen. John Shalikashvili Mission Command Center (MCC) on Clay Kaserne (Bldg. 1000). Event registration begins at 8 a.m., with formal presentations starting at 9 a.m. Those who attend are advised to bring their ID cards and passports or residency permits and ensure they know their social security number. Those who bring shot records will be able to receive any required immunizations.

Keeping up with the Joneses — An ordinary suburban couple (Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher) finds it’s not easy keeping up with the Joneses (Jon Hamm, Gal Gadot) - their impossibly gorgeous and ultra-sophisticated new neighbors - especially when they discover that Mr. and Mrs. “Jones” are covert operatives.

The Conjuring 2 — Director James Wan brings this supernatural thriller to the screen with another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson star as Lorraine and Ed Warren, who, in one of their most terrifying paranormal investigations, travel to north London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by malicious spirits.

Movie plots Inferno — Inferno continues the Harvard symbologist’s adventures on screen: when Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s “Inferno.” Lights Out — From producer James Wan (“The Conjuring”) comes a tale of an unknown terror that lurks in the dark. When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out…and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger…once the lights go out.

Ouija: Origin of Evil — In Ouija, a group of friends must confront their most terrifying fears when they awaken the dark powers of an ancient spirit board. Stiles White directs the supernatural thriller that is produced by Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller (The Purge, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) alongside Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series, The Purge), Bennett Schneir (Battleship) and Hasbro. Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote the script for Ouija, and Universal will distribute the film worldwide. Blair Witch — A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

Pumpkins make a cheesecake incredibly moist. This cheesecake will stay moist for days in the refrigerator. The flavors of both the cream cheese and pumpkin shine through. One warning: if you bake the pumpkin cheesecake without a water bath it will likely crack on the top. I’m ok with this; I Ingredients Crust: 1 1/2 cups of graham cracker crumbs 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon of ground mace 4 ounces of melted butter

Filling: One small to medium pie pumpkin (it will need to produce 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of cooked pumpkin purée) 24 ounces of cream cheese (cultured cream cheese adds the most flavor, if you can get it) 3 whole large chicken eggs plus one yolk 1/4 cup of full-fat sour cream 1/2 cup of white sugar 1/2 cup of brown sugar 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon of ground mace 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt 1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon of pure vanilla extract Directions Heat your toaster oven to 450 degrees F. Split the pie pumpkin in half and remove the seeds and stringy stuff. Rub each pumpkin half lightly with the oil of your choice (walnut oil works well for this). Bake until the pumpkin is soft all the way through, this should take about 45 minutes. Cool slightly, then scoop out the cooked pumpkin flesh and purée it in your food processor. Set aside. Decrease your toaster oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Combine the graham cracker crumbs, ground cinnamon, ground mace and melted butter in a medium mixing bowl. Mix well. Press into the bottom of a greased 9 inch springform

think it adds to the rustic, homemade look. If the cracks present a problem for you, you will need to use a traditional Bain Marie, or water bath, and extend the baking time by 15 minutes. This will probably also require firing up your full-sized oven; there isn’t enough room in most toaster ovens for a proper water bath. pan. Bake for 8 minutes. Set the baked crust aside and let cool. Put the cream cheese into a stand mixer fitted with the beater paddle. Beat until completely smooth. Add the pumpkin puree. Beat till smooth and combined. Add the eggs and the yolk one at a time, beating between each addition. Add the sour cream, beat again. Add the sugar, beat again. Add the brown sugar, beat again. Add the cinnamon, mace, cloves, sea salt, flour and pure vanilla extract. Beat again. Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake for one hour, rotating it halfway after 30 minutes. Turn the toaster oven off, but don’t open it and leave the cheesecake in the toaster oven for an additional 30 minutes. Remove from the toaster oven and let cool at room temperature for 2 hours. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 5 hours. Tips And Suggestions Check out my other articles to find a recipe for homemade whole grain graham crackers. They make excellent crumbs for the crust. Put a small cup (oven proof of course) of water in the corner of your toaster oven while baking the cheesecake. This will minimize, but not eliminate, the cracks. THE AWAKENING – HALLOWEEN AT FRANKENSTEIN CASTLE

When you think about the ultimate in Halloween experiences, obviously Frankenstein’s Castle is right up there near the top! We decided to do the tour during the day, mostly, because I am a big baby. I also hate the feeling of someone lurking in the dark with the intent to terrify me, especially if I am paying for it. Oktober 21 – November 6, 2016

tle, which became one of the biggest Halloween festivals in Europe. While it was not “scary” per se, it was definitely a little bit on the “creepy” side. I am convinced that the local talent (men dressed as various types of monsters) view this particular event as an opportunity to, let’s just say, exercise various degrees of public displays of affection.

The girls thought we were being dramatic and that this was an acceptable forum for the up close and personal contact. As a female over the age of puberty, I recommend that you be prepared for some inappropriate behavior. I can only imagine what

What to Expect The days are family friendly and the nights are more adult-oriented. A Bit of History Frankenstein Castle (or in German: Burg Frankenstein) is a hilltop castle overlooking the city of Darmstadt. This castle may have been an inspiration for Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic Novel Frankenstein. There is no definite proof that this is true… only that she traveled to the area prior to writing the novel. In 1978, American Airmen from the 435th Transportation Squadron started an annual Halloween festival at the cas-

My teen daughters and I became a source of amusement when we screamed and ran from these “monsters” as they (for lack of better words) groped us. Fortunately, my husband was with us and served as a bodyguard. I think he had reached his husband/father limit by the time we left. Overall, it was good fun and we enjoyed the experience. As I said, we went during family friendly hours and there were many smaller kids there who seemed to have a great time running from monsters.
