REVISITING OUR YEARBOOK IDIARABA 1983 “I have tried to make enquiries from the set after us and I am not sure if any of the sets followed our footsteps, though I may be wrong.

Perhaps before I finish this, I will get some answers”

An excerpt from the yearbook “As we graduate and leave the College, we sincerely hope this first example will start a yearly flow of yearbooks that will help add more meaning to the life of students, lecturers, and all participants in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital” .

Many thanks to Imo whose idea it was in the first place, I think he was influenced by having obtained his first degree from abroad a common practice, particularly in the US.

GRATITUDE Our Gratitude To the President Dr Toyin Smith and her Cabinet.

Our gratitude to you honourable President for your dedication and hard work in leading us as a group.

The same goes for all our dedicated colleagues working alongside you in keeping our endeavours going and worthwhile.

The reunions, the bi-yearly meetings and the local gettogethers have all been very meaningful.

It has given us if I am allowed to say, a sense of belonging and a raison d’etre. They have been times of great reminiscing, jokes and laughter.

The gathering has enriched our neuronal networks, keeping them lush, preventing maladies, making us creative, and helping to maintain positive emotional/mental well-being and optimal performance.

Social interaction, says Professor Nausbaum among other factors is good for brain health, one area we must protect dearly as we advance in age. I hope we can convince many of our colleagues in Nigeria and from all over the world, to start joining the gatherings.

When we meet to socialise in our local areas and regions, we have the opportunity to tell our stories and storytelling is a brain activity that helps us stay young.

As David Hellerstien, a neuropsychiatrist said : “When we tell our stories, breaking them down into little pieces and making new ones, it helps our wellness. A good part of getting good results is creating new stories or new scripts about possibilities and new directions in our lives. The repetition of stories and the telling of new ones create connections between brain cells and recovery from mental health problems involves the remapping of our brain in part by telling new stories about ourselves.

40 years ago, we were young, vibrant and ambitious, we wanted to take on the whole world, and we travelled far and wide to plant roots and to connect back to our home, which we continue to do.

Today we must thank God, for where he has brought each and every one of us and how he has expanded our family with children and grandchildren, some of whom we met during our reunion at Dubai in 2019.

May the Lord grant us the grace to remain in touch and close and to continue the journey we began when we were made a family in 1978. Let us look forward to and be excited about where God is taking us.

From the editor R.I.P (Eternal peace) This ZINE is dedicated in the first instance to God Almighty, who for an eternal purpose brought us together as one big family and has granted us the grace to remain in contact after separation for so many years.

Secondly, to our dearly departed brother, colleague and friend Dr John Imo Akpaeti who encouraged and inspired us to come together and produce such a valuable literature- Our year book.

At any point when you get this ZINE, please observe a one minute silence in remembrance of all our faithful and dedicated colleagues who have passed unto the great beyond.

May our reunion in God’s time be a blessed experience.

There are two grids. Each holding the names of one half of the class.

Please note that for some of us, you would find your forename, while others would find their surname or nickname. I did this so names were not duplicated. However, I may have duplicated some names, because of namesakes.

Consider this our Roll call. If you do not find your name, then we must think again, were you really in the set of 1978-1983? just joking.

For our dearly departed, may they witness that we keep them in our hearts, not to forget A K Acheampong who met his tragic death after a swim at the beach in 1979, a place we often visited when we were in Idi-Araba. May their souls continue to rest in peace.

Have a read of Dr Imo, John Akpaeiti’s Note Editor’s Note I wonder if there is a unanimous agreement in the purpose of any Editorial column. Even if there is, mine will deviate somehow because I am I-and not just any Editor.

We decided to make a yearbook in October 1982 to go to the press in January 1983 and to have the book ready in March 1983. I’m not sure Napoleon’s Army could have handled that.

It took only two weeks to campaign and plead in order to overcome the resistance of some of my colleagues. To them I owe a million thanks, not only for agreeing with me to execute the Yearbook but most of all for giving me an opportunity to serve them and thus learn the special devices one must invent in order to succeed in Nigeria student population. For me the six months I spent working on the yearbook have exposed me to a great deal of learning. I have made new friends and strengthened old ones. I have come across very interesting and sometimes amazing people- teachers, workers and students alike. I thank them all.

Three years ago, I was thrown out of the students’ S.R.C. (Students’ representative council) meeting for suggesting a Yearbook for the entire College. But today, we are the proud readers of a Yearbook at idi-Araba. Thanks to the class of 1978-1983, the most united of them all. As this Class goes down in history as the pioneer of the FIRST YEARBOOK ever to be produced in this University. I enjoin our junior colleagues to pick up from here and make a College Yearbook an annual affair. An Alma Mater we all can be proud of is what we are asking for.

Along the way, we, however, ran into a myriad of problems, many of which were made heavier by the special and unique style of our Nigerians. To frustrate good intentions, place hurdles on even grounds, procrastinate for no justifiable reasons,- have become our way of life. We need to change, please.

How sad would it would be, if he could witness the state of Nigeria and its people in 2023?

Unfortunately, we have changed for the worse.

First, we ran into photographic problems. We were either unable to reach our subjects or were denied the chance or the films were not available, or the developers had made mistakes. And what about the disappearance in the student mailbox of a whole set of slides and photographs? For these reasons, we hereby apologize to many of the people, Clubs and events we were unable to cover.

In fact, I had spent the entire harmattan trying in vain to obtain the pictures of many teachers, doctors, and instruments.

Many thanks go to my class colleagues who contributed N2,000.00 on the spot. The Provost, Professor D Femi-Pearse must be mentioned for a special effort and interest from the start to the finish, Professor Oyediran and Dr Oleru are thanked for officiating at our Football Match. Class Captain E Ajayi is remembered for those moments spared in class so that I could cry to my friends.

Miss Eleje, Oguine, Arokoyu, E. Anamgba, Victor Nyamalor were reliable in collecting and keeping the money so I could spend. Colleagues Salami and Makanjuola are thanked for auditing our accounts and for always – criticising and thus giving me the challenge to improve, I remember E. Eze.

Sometimes, when no one else knew we existed the following colleagues were in our sail-boat: M Emmanuel, Sanusi and Ayaegbuna (photography), Latona, Antai, Alli, Nnadozie, Adegoke, Mba Udezue, K.P Adesina (information). Antai needs more mention for encouraging me to push on with the idea.

Miss Adesanya and Anachebe contributed immensely by helping with some of the clerical work.

Anachebe spent most of his Xmas vacation working on the personal photographs and information column. Mr Obilana and the entire staff of LUTH printing press as well as Mr Ofili, D. G. of the Department of Surgery are well remembered for their invaluable services. Mr R.O. Oladeji is also especially remembered for contributing more than an artist’s quota to the success of this book.

Last, not least, we remember Mr Johnson and his Department of Biomedical Communication for their excellent photography. In the book, we have attempted to photograph you in the context of your activities so you can reflect on those aspects of College life- be they work or play, moments of joy or sorrow, friends or non-friends. And come tomorrow we believe they will add up for you to what true MEMORIES are made of.

So true my brother, our memories are our re-played past, but our imaginations, which are preplaying the future, depend so much on our memories and boy we do have some good memories of our time at Idi Araba.

Finally, as the man responsible for putting this book together, I own up to all errors and omissions and request all correspondence in these regards, to be directed to me, please.

Thank God what we give him is praise all the way even in death.

To all my colleagues and friends, it’s an extended Goodbye……………. And should we meet again along life’s fair path, please stop to say “Hello” Simply beautiful even after many years have passed, this is a good bedtime reading.
