The 2016 Progressive North American In-Water Boat Show will dock at Cedar Point for four days, August 25-28, with more than 10,000 boaters expected to look over a fleet of 400 power and sailboats slated for display.

The show at Cedar Point is the oldest and largest in-water show held annually on the Great Lakes attracting boaters from Michigan, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Ontario. Appropriately, the show also boasts the largest in-water display of boats.

“We’re excited to have many new 2017 models arriving for the show,” says Bryan Ralston, president of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association. “We know climbing aboard new boats is the number one reason boaters come to Cedar Point. We’ve expanding the show’s footprint because the boating industry is having an up year and dealers need more display space to show more boats.”

Getting a first look at many of next year’s models is the number one reason boaters flock to the Progressive North America InWater Boat Show at Cedar Point each year.

This year the four-day show, running August 25–28, will be no exception when it comes to new boats getting their first public showing in the area. “The dealers have been pushing their builders to provide the latest models available,” notes Bryan Ralston, president of the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association. “So, show visitors will see many new 2017 models just going into production.”

Catawba Moorings (Port Clinton), for example, will display 5 new 2017 boats from manufacturers Key West and Regulator. Headlining the exhibit will be the all-new Regulator 31 with twin Yamaha 300 outboards making it first appearance in a Great Lakes show.

While the Regulator brand is widely recognized in fishing circles, the name of Buddy Davis is legendary in the boating industry. Lake & Bay Yachts Sales (Marblehead) will introduce the 2017 Buddy Davis 28 Center Console powered by Twin Yamaha 300’s. “It’s going to be as new as it gets,” says Ted Patrick, “because the boat is scheduled to be completed at the facto-

Regal Boats will round out the South Shore display, featuring the new 29OBX with twin outboard power in a luxury bowrider alongside the new Regal 23OBX with single outboard.

“While we randomly highlight only a few of the more than 300 boats at the show this year,” explains Ralston, “virtually every major boat builder will be represented. Brands like Sea Fox, Tiara, Sea Ray, Parker, Four Winns, SportCraft, Prestige, Azimut, Stingray, Rinker, Boston Whaler, Monterey, Cruisers, Cobia, Nautique, Robalo, Bennington, Moomba, Lund and many more.”

New boats may get the spotlight, but a very popular part of this show is the select number of quality pre-owned boats that are also displayed by dealers and area brokers. These usually cover a range from 25 feet to 50-plus feet, both power and sail.

“Mac and The Big Cheese,” the Abbott and Costello of comedy cooking will be the headliners on the main stage at this year’s Progressive North American Demo Boat Show at Cedar Point, August 25–28.

The Bostonbased duo of Pat Mac (Mac) and Mike Faverman (The Big Cheese) has been cracking up audiences from coast to coast for than a more decade.

Brace yourself for expert advice cooking like: “Most chefs recommend using virgin olive oil, but we prefer the promiscuous kind!”

The “Mac and The Big Cheese” act is one of the additions to this year’s boat show entertainment and feature lineup, according to Bryan Ralston, show manager. “We’re offering visitors a whole lot more than just a great line up of boats and accessories. We want the whole family to be entertained and have fun.”

“Last weekend we almost sold out the front row,” quips Mac. The truth is they have sold thousands of copies of their “Mac and the Big Cheese Cookbook” and 8 different DVD’s. Yes,

New leadership is reflected in this year’s show

Major changes, from leadership to layout, are being made for this year’s Progressive North American In-Water Boat Show at Cedar Point, August 25-28.

Bryan Ralston, the new president of the show-producing Lake Erie Marine Trades Association, has announced following months of looking at every aspect of this show, a new focus will be evident to visitors this year. “It’s in the same place (Cedar Point’s south basin),� says Ralston. “It’s got the same grand name (North American In-Water Boat Show).

But the changes and additions we’re developing for the 44th annual running of the Great Lakes’ largest in-water show will likely have boaters saying this ain’t the same old show!�

it, so we’ve been working to get as many new models on display as possible.�

In addition to boats, Ralston notes that Cedar Point itself is a nationally-recognized place of fun and entertainment. So, he reasons the boat show should reflect that atmosphere with its own entertainment features, special events, prize contests and hands-on activities.

For example, plans are underway for a “Paddling Cove� that will boast the latest in paddleboards and kayaks and visitors can actually try them out. There will be instruction for interested newbies, too.

Fishing is a big part of boating, so angling

seminars by pros, along with hands-on fishing clinics, have been added to the show mix for the first time. And, food is important, too.

Boaters indicated they would like better food choices so they could stay longer to enjoy the show and activities. Accordingly, new food and beverage options are being incorporated this year. “We have dealers significantly increasing their display space, so we know this year’s event will be the largest since 2008,� Ralston predicts. “Overall, we expect about 400 power and sailboats ranging from inflatable dinghies to 60-foot-plus motor yachts to be on display. “It’s all about experiences these days, so we’re focused on creating a great day at the show for the entire family,� promises Ralston.

Ralston and his team have received input from boat dealers, accessory and service exhibitors, and boaters about what they want in the show. “As a result, we’re setting a new course,� Ralston says.

The changes begin with the show’s footprint. The overall space plan has been modified to improve the flow of visitors both on the floating docks and the dry-land and accessory displays. The show will continue to feature a variety of demo rides, but the new emphasis will be on the display of new boats and equipment. “Boaters have told us that the opportunity to see new things – boats and equipment - is really why they like the show, so that is a prime focus this year,� Ralston says. “We get

The boat show marks 44 years at Cedar Point The Progressive North America In-Water Boat Show at Cedar Point is among the longest running in-water shows in the nation. There weren’t many in-water shows anywhere when, in 1973, the Lake Erie Marine Trades Association initiated what rapidly became the largest annual show of its kind on the Great Lakes. Not only was the idea of an in-water show pretty new, but Cedar Point provided the most unique setting of any in-water show in America.

Over more than four decades since, over a half million boaters from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania have attended this event.

In an interview with Norm Schultz, who created the show and headed it up for 34 years before retiring, we get a feeling for the boat show’s rich background.

“When we started it in 1973, our thinking was simply an end-of-season clearance boat sale,” Schultz recalls. “We hoped 2,000 boaters might come but when over 5,000 showed up in three days, it was like – Hello! We’ve got the makings for a major in-water boat show on our hands.”

From less than 90 boats that first year, the show consumed all 300 docks and all adjacent land space in the north basin of Cedar Point Marina by 1975. To grow the show even more, Schultz began having temporary floating docks built to supplement the marina’s existing fixed docks. For years, the show packed boats and displays into the north basin until, ultimately, a decision was made to move the show to Cedar Point’s south harbor.

“Putting the show where it is today, in the south harbor, was a big challenge,” says Schultz, “but doing it allowed us to triple the on-land accessory tents and displays, and grow the in-water dockage to whatever the boat dealers needed. To do it, we had to build a lot more floating docks since there were no permanent slips as there are today.

“We also had to bring in heavy permanent electrical power, transformers and a distribution system to power-up the entire event,” continued Schultz. “But it was a great move for the exhibitors and visitors alike. When we were in the north harbor, we had to bring everyone up from the main parking lots by trams. In the south harbor, everyone can park adjacent to the show area.”

If the move to the south harbor was historic, the dramatic change in show dates two years ago must be considered another milestone. For over 40 years the show had been held after Labor Day. That timing was chosen because in those years Cedar Point was only open for two bonus weekends after Labor Day and traffic was not significant.

But the recent start of Cedar Point’s tremendously successful HallowWeekends after Labor Day changed all that. The success of the two events, the boat show and HallowWeekends, held simultaneously created traffic snarls and delays. So, LEMTA moved the boat show into late August, away from the big HallowWeekends. That has made it much more convenient for boaters to get to the show.

It’s time to ban wind turbines in Lake Erie – Part Two

By Norm Schultz In last month’s Part One of this examination of wind farms in Lake Erie by the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation, we examined the “Blight on the Lake” this proposal will create.

We also identified the organizations behind it, the planned sell-out to foreign interests, and the taxpayer money needed to keep LEEDCo and its leaders afloat.

In Part Two, we’ll examine other aspects of this project that all those who love Lake Erie should be opposing, and how to make your voice heard.

The idea that we can generate electricity from the wind is not, in itself, bad. But, the proposal to build wind turbines in Lake Erie should top a list of bad ideas. It’s time for all those who see this boondoggle for what it is to take action.

Specifically, a wind farm, dubbed “Ice Breaker,” would be built in Lake Erie about 7 miles off Cleveland. If constructed, it would be the nation’s first offshore turbine development in fresh water, slated to be operating by 2018. But a serious look at the project should lead all those who value Lake Erie – shoreline communities, boaters, fishermen and more – to say “No!” The group behind it, perhaps, should be more accurately called the Lake Erie Environmental Destruction Corporation.

They have lived off taxpayer money for more than a decade and just got a truly fat Department of Energy grant of $47 million in

taxpayer money. Unfortunately, this money will move LEEDCo closer to realizing its stated goal of inspiring more wind farm

But forget about destroying the spectacular vista of Lake Erie in the name of some megawatts that we already get from other sources. Look at the economic and environmental aspects.

We have, for example, the world’s largest supply of low-cost natural gas currently used to generate increasing amounts of our electricity at reasonable costs. In contrast, electric prices are significantly higher in countries that have embraced wind power, like Britain or Germany where households pay three times more than we pay.

The simple truth is the wind industry can’t compete with America’s natural gas, a reliable, clean and cheap power source that doesn’t need taxpayer subsidies. Wind is unreliable and, therefore, much more costly.

In California, for example, capacity factors for the onshore windmill units have been 20 percent to 45 percent lower than normal because average wind speeds dropped.

The time has arrived for boaters, anglers and every person who treasures the unbroken beauty of Lake Erie to stand up and say “NO” to this needless environmental destruction. And, it can be prevented.

Locating turbines in our waterways will require approval from federal agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Most important, however, is that approval must be obtained from various agencies in each impacted state. Such approval hasn’t happened, yet. In Ohio, for example, it’s the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and

judge in California ruled in favor of protecting the bald eagle under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Elsewhere, North Carolina-based Duke Energy paid a $1 million fine and pleaded guilty to killing 14 eagles and 149 other birds at its Wyoming wind farm.

It’s particularly telling, however, that the existing Blue Creek Wind Farm in northwest Ohio has filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Power Sitting Board asking the court to block those agencies from releasing bird kill reports. The wind farm operators don’t want birding groups or others to get such information.

In Michigan, wind farm developers see Lake St. Clair as a target for 160 wind turbines, according to State Rep. Timothy Bledsoe. He said the 40-story turbines would be clustered together in groups of 50-plus just three to four miles off the shoreline.

Meanwhile, New York State and the province of Ontario smartly placed moratoriums on offshore windmill construction after residents rejected their unsightly views, expected property value losses and higher electricity costs. Elsewhere, wind energy zoning aimed at restricting turbine locations was enacted in 2015 in Michigan’s Huron County.

By Richard Martin August and September are normally hard times for Lake Erie boating anglers. Walleye fishing is slack with many fish in Canadian waters or migrated east, perch fishing is usually only fair to good, and smallmouths are holding in deeper water along reefs and rocky shoals. But it's not a time to put up your rods and mow the lawn, because there's still some good action waiting. All you need to do is go fishing.

There aren't that many anglers who simply go fishing. Most are seeking some particular species, but those who like easy going, inexpensive, no hassle, and relaxing action can find fine sport on multiple kinds of fish by heading to a handy shoreline, pier, marina (with permission) or river mouth, and tossing out a line. It's great for kids, too.

Several years ago I spent a couple of days in a campground well east of Toledo, and the first evening there walked out to its manmade lake for a little fishing. The lake had several piers and a good, wide channel to Lake Erie, and it seemed likely that Erie fish would migrate into that lake each evening to forage around its edges and weed beds. It's a routine occurance in any tributary, bay, backwater, or marina along the big lake.

I baited up two rods, tossed out lines, placed the pair in forked sticks, and settled back in a lawn chair to loaf, talk to fellow campers, and do a little fishing. Shortly, one rod tip began to telegraph a bite and I was into a fat little bullhead. He was carefully unhooked with my usual care for sharp barbs

on his dorsal and pectoral fins. Minutes later another bit, followed by a two pound sheepshead that scrapped hard enough to draw campers from six lots away. Then as twilight deepened the channel cats took over, and kept biting until I gave it up. Most ranged from a pound or so up to three pounds plus, a good little trip and a typical example of "just fishing."

I had similar luck just last year in August working a Lake Erie tributary, the Portage River at Port Clinton, that poured into the

lake bearing food items as well as silt from recent rains. This time I picked up an odds bodkins assortment of fish that included carp, bullheads, channel cats, white perch, yellow perch, suckers, and sheepshead. It seemed something was biting almost constantly, enough that I finally went to one rod.

Another good trip.

Just going fishing doesn't require much equipment. I rig my rods with two No. 6 snelled hooks above a sinker on lines end, keeping the hooks about a foot apart. This is

a classic fishfinder rig that works for almost anything, and I traditionally bait with ordinary nightcrawlers. I've used other baits too, among them dead emerald shiners, crayfish, commercial doughballs, and leeches, but almost everything in the big lake eats nightcrawlers and they're easy to find at any bait shop.

You might ask "What's the point of such fishing, except for fun and kids entertainment?" The above two reasons are good enough, but it's worth mentioning that lots of what you catch can be eaten, and eaten with real relish if you put them promptly on ice. I don't eat Lake Erie channel cats because there's an advisory on them, but a cluster of small fat bullheads with heads, entrails and skin removed, then fried in smoking hot cornmeal isn't bad at all.

I sometimes fish strictly for carp, using canned sweet corn then, and make a good catch of 1-3 pounders. Big carp aren't good, but the little guys can be filleted, the dark lateral line (mud streak) removed, and the fish first brined, then smoked. Smoked carp is good enough to be sold in stores, and makes a great finger food for ball games when nibbled with an appropriate beverage.

Young sheepshead fit the same category, and more than once I've mixed crisp sheepshead fillets in with perch or walleye.

No one noticed any difference. And white perch can be tasty, too. Just fishing is always fun and relaxing, and when you eat your catch, even better. Something to do during the dog days of summer.

When will we all slow down?

We are already knee deep into summer. There is always so much anticipation leading up to the first signs of warm weather and ideal boating days, yet here I sit writing this article on July 13th and I have only been boating twice so far this summer. I understand as a full time working mother that free time is often limited and I am genuinely ok with that. The struggle is when I look back and am constantly wondering “Where did the days go?”

Most of us juggle responsibility constantly: work, hobbies, children’s activities, parties, charity events, school, church, side jobs, etc.

However, I feel like the pressure to attend each activity and number of obligations we all feel keeps increasing at a staggering rate. What I crave most right now is down time: time to just relax and be with my family and friends without the hurry scurry of always having somewhere to be. I would love to be able to go boating and just cruise without stressing of having to be back early for one reason or another.

Ironically we have a fair amount of retired customers who do not handle “retirement” well and end up booking themselves with projects, events, side jobs or consulting so that now they feel busier than they did prior to retirement. I am

wondering if the new way of life is now imbedded in our DNA: something that tells us to go go go go go, and not make rest or relaxation a priority.

My baby celebrated her first birthday this month. As we were planning her party and going over the invite list I caught myself wondering, “Why do I only see some of these friends at planned events for our children?” It is like we all need a reason to schedule time to get together now. We are all so busy with the daily routine of life, at times anything different seems like an obligation rather than an enjoyment.

These reasons alone are why I LOVE boating.

I just love it. It creates family time and molds memories among friends. Boating is fun and relaxing at the same time, it is an enjoyment created by spending time together, getting away from the computer and “to do lists” and just simply being together with people you care about.

We hear customers talk about how boating is an expensive hobby to have, which of course it is, however I feel as though the relaxation and excitement it creates, along with quality time with people you love are priceless. Sometimes we all need an excuse to get away from the daily grind, and lucky for those who are fortunate to own their own boat, they now have the perfect excuse! As my father always says “The boat won’t drive itself!”

For the past few years, family spirit and shared activities have faded away. Not only from boating and fishing, but just about all activities I recall doing as I grew up and later enjoyed with my kids.

As Captain on my charter boat, I noted fewer family groups booking and less family activities on other boats on the waterways.

After the events of 9-11, and so many more recent dramatic events, youngsters saw Mom and Dad cry as they hugged them. Grandma and Grandpa had tears in their eyes also and their hugs became tighter and longer than before. As friends and relatives were greeted and the hugs continued, family spirit was re-born.

As family togetherness once again became important, many of us recalled one of the best ways to take your mind away from problems was to â&#x20AC;&#x153;GO BOATINGâ&#x20AC;?.

As a Florida winter resident (snowbird), I see families all around me enjoying day trips on their boats. I saw it up close and personal when my daughter and son-in-law loaded up the kids â&#x20AC;&#x201C; two plus the dog, and made the trip south for a visit.

When they arrived, I asked; â&#x20AC;&#x153;What would you like to do?â&#x20AC;? to which they all responded immediately, â&#x20AC;&#x153;GO BOATINGâ&#x20AC;?. Where I winter in the Florida Keys, there are lots of choices; Fishing on the ocean or in the Mangrove passes, shrimping, snorkeling or just cruising along enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.

We went boating a lot and to my surprise and pleasure, my grandson did not even take his hand-held electronic game along (I had thought it was implanted).

When I finally admitted I needed a break, the family climbed in my small inflatable and elected to GO BOATING without me.

After a day off, I loaded the group on my 25-foot center console and we all went boating again. I especially enjoyed watching the kids point out the water birds flying overhead or perched in the Mangroves and catching sight of fish in the clear waters alongside our boat. I loved the laughter and cheers of all of us together along with the absence of the 7â&#x20AC;&#x201C;year olds chiming electronic game.

As we passed through creeks, ventured across sounds and headed out on the open ocean waters, I saw lots of families boating together wherever we went.

Kids today are learning some things they did not know like, grown ups can cry, the American flag is meaningful, hugs are fun and there is nothing better for a family outing than an announcement ofâ&#x20AC;Ś LETâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S GO BOATING!
