The Para-Commandos are the US Special Operations Command’s premier aerial parachute demonstration team. They perform at high visibility events across the nation, informing the public about the US Special Operations Command; the command’s mission, and the contributions our 70,000 plus Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Department of Defense Civilians are making across the United States and in more than 70 countries around the globe.

The Para-Commandos are members of and representative of today’s Special Operations Forces. The Para-Commandos are comprised of active duty Special Operators, such as Army Special Forces, Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Air Force Combat Controllers and Marine Raiders. In addition, the Para-Commandos have a number of support personnel, commonly referred to as Special Operations Enablers. Our enablers come from all four services, and include reserve forces as well.

The Para-Commandos tailor each performance to the individual venue, and can perform from as low as 2000 feet above ground level to as high as 13,500 feet above ground level. Depending on the venue and time of day, The Para-Commandos may jump flags, smoke, sparklers, or a combination of each into the event. The Para-Commandos are proficient in both free fall and canopy formations; and specialize in landing on time and on target in front of the crowd!

The F-22A Raptor is an advanced tactical fighter aircraft developed for the US Air Force (USAF). It entered service with the USAF in December 2005 to replace the F-15, with emphasis on agility, stealth and range.

These 5th generation stealth aircraft are the crown jewels in the nation’s military arsenal.

The F-22’s primary mission is to secure air superiority — a condition vital for any successful military operation. While the aircraft can also strike targets on the ground with great precision, and conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance inside contested airspace, at its heart the Raptor will remain an air-to-air champion. Because of its vast array of capabilities — not all known — the F-22 is our nation’s greatest conventional deterrent. While the current force size is small relative to other fighter forces, the F-22 has — at a minimum — an order of magnitude greater effect than any other fighter in the world.

The F-22 is a fundamentally unique airplane due to the unparalleled integration of stealth, sensor technology, processing power, and unrivaled flight performance. While many fighters have some elements of this mix, none possess the total package afforded by Page 4

the F-22. The F-22’s ability to collect and share tactical information with friendly assets enables U.S. and allied forces to engage targets with unmatched battlespace awareness.

The Raptor makes other coalition aircraft more survivable.

Lockheed Martin received a $7bn five-year contract to maintain the USAF fleet of F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, in December 2019. The F-22 is the world’s most dominant fighter, and potential adversaries continue to develop capabilities intended to challenge the ability of U.S. and allied air forces to gain and maintain air superiority.

Lockheed Martin is dedicated to working with the U.S. Air Force on a robust F-22 combat enhancement program to bolster the Raptor’s asymmetric advantage over current and potential adversaries. The capabilities of the F-22 Raptor remain essential to deter and defeat threats and ensure regional and global security well into the future.

The Air Combat Command F-22 Demonstration Team at Langley Air Force Base performs precision aerial maneuvers to demonstrate the unique capabilities of the Maj. Joshua “Cabo” Gunderson F-22. The team also flies with Air Force Heritage flight Commander/Pilot exhibiting the professional qualities the Air Force develops in the people who fly, maintain and support these aircraft. U.S. Air Force Maj. Josh Gunderson, the F-22 Demonstration Team pilot and commander, has been flying F-22s since he transitioned from the F-15C Eagle in 2014. As an experienced combat proven fighter pilot with over 1,500 hours and two deployments to the Middle East.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. They are simple, quiet, effective and survivable twin-engine jet aircraft. The A-10 can be used against all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles using its nose-mounted GAU-8/A 30mm cannon, capable of firing 3,900 rounds per minute. Produced by Fairchild Republic Company, the first A-10A was delivered in 1975. Today, the A-10C Thunderbolt II continues to play a pivotal role for the United States military with excellent maneuverability at low air speeds and altitude solidifying itself as a highly accurate and survivable weapons-delivery platform for the modern world. The aircraft can loiter near battle areas for extended periods of time and operate in low ceiling and visibility conditions. The wide combat radius and short takeoff and landing capability permit operations in and out of locations near front lines.

Thunderbolt IIs have Night Vision Imaging Systems, or NVIS, goggle compatible single-seat cockpits forward of their wings and a large bubble canopy which provides pilots all-around vision. The pilots are protected by titanium armor that also protects parts of the flight-control system. The redundant primary structural sections allow the aircraft to enjoy better survivability during close air support than did previous aircraft. The aircraft can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high explosive projectiles up to 23mm. Their self-sealing fuel cells are protected Page 6

by internal and external foam. Manual systems back up their redundant hydraulic flight-control systems. This permits pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is lost.

In 2005, the entire A-10 fleet began receiving the Precision Engagement upgrades that include an improved fire control system (FCS), electronic countermeasures (ECM), upgraded cockpit displays, the ability to deliver smart bombs, moving map display, hands on throttle and stick, digital stores management, LITENING and Sniper advanced targeting pod integration, situational awareness data link or SADL, and GPS-guided weapons. The entire A-10 fleet has been Precision Engagement modified and now carries the A-10C designation.

The Air Combat Command A-10C Thunderbolt II Demonstration Team, stationed out of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, brings the aircraft to air shows around the country to showcase the unique combat capabilities of the A-10 “Warthog.”

They perform precision aerial maneuvers while highlighting the mission and professionalism of the men and women of the United States Air Force.

DEMO TEAM

This high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed multi-service military transport aircraft can carry large equipment, supplies and troops directly to small airfields in harsh terrain anywhere in the world. The massive, sturdy, long-haul aircraft tackles distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable conditions. It has delivered cargo in every worldwide operation since the 1990s.

NASA played a huge role in the development of the C-17 contributing research and technology that had been made available to the industry over four decades. The powered-lift, developed by researchers at the NASA Langley Research Center in the mid-1950s, gave the aircraft close to double the lift coefficient of a conventional transport airframe by positioning the engines and flaps in a way that directed the exhaust downward. The development of this technology gave the C-17 short take off and landing capabilities allowing it to takeoff and land on runways as short as 3,500 feet. The super critical wing, winglets, fly-by-wire system, engine enhancements and composite materials used throughout the aircraft were all developed in partnership with NASA.

A C-17 demo team is made up of a four-person crew. Becoming a member of the demo team requires a high level of experience in the C-17, meeting training requirements and senior leadership approval. Veteran pilots who have experience as instructors, evaluators or aircraft commanders are selected. An air show profile is not much from real-world missions; however, an air show performance demands flying at the next level with precision maneuvers and speed.

- A fully loaded C-17 can reverse up a slope while on the ground.

- C-17s have set 33 world records, including payload to altitude time-to-climb and the short takeoff and landing mark.

- In 2015 the worldwide C-17 fleet reached 3 million flying hours. The equivalent of flying around the Earth 55,555 times, 2,948 trips to the moon or a single C-17 flying nonstop for 342 years.

- The C-17 is sometimes referred to as “The Moose” due to its bulky appearance and the sound it makes while refueling.

Mike’s passion for aviation started when he was very young. Mike’s Dad took him to his first air show at the age of 10. At 14, he biked to the airport for two weeks and bugged the owner for a job washing aircraft and cleaning hangars just to be around airplanes. In school, Mike had a teacher tell him he would never be a pilot. He traded washing airplanes for flying lessons and received his Pilot’s License on his 17th birthday.

Thirty eight years later, Mike has accumulated more than 24,000 flight hours and qualified in more than 40 aircraft. “It is incredible to be part of the Lucas Oil Team. Their products as well as their integrity make what I do even more rewarding.” And, he doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to pass on the gift of encouragement and attitude given to him by all who believe in him. That is why Mike started the “I Can” program.

Mike’s career is a testimony of how dreams can come true. As a 2002 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion, and of the 2004 U.S. Aerobatic Team, Mike traveled the World with the same aircraft you will see him performing in. His excitement for aviation is nothing short of contagious in his attempt to help encourage kids of all ages to live their dreams and never give up! The GEICO Skytypers are a flying unit based in Long Island, NY, comprised of 10 pilots who fly World War II-era aircraft. They are the only flying unit in the world to type giant skytyped messages AND perform in air shows across the United States.

They fly in SNJ-2s originally built in 1940 and 1941 during World War II. They were called the T-6 Texan by the Army Air Corps, the Harvard by the RAF, and affectionately known as “The Pilot Maker” by its crews, the SNJ was designed to transition from basic trainers to first-line tactical aircraft. There are only 11 remaining aircraft of this type in the world, of which the team utilizes six. The planes have been fully restored and specially equipped with modifications for skytyping missions.

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, known to all the world as the “Thunderbirds” are the Air Force’s Ambassadors in Blue. They represent the 500,000 men and women of the Unites States Air Force. The Thunderbirds plan and present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate those aircraft. The Thunderbirds squadron is composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and more than 100 enlisted personnel.

The Thunderbirds air demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The fourjet diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of Air Force pilots, while the two solo aircraft highlight some of the extreme capabilities of the F-16. In all, the pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a single demonstration. An aerial demonstration lasts 60 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for the ground show before takeoff.

During a typical season the Thunderbirds perform no more than 70 air demonstrations in 35 cities throughout the nation. More than 280 million people in all 50 states and 57 foreign countries have seen the red, white and blue Thunderbirds jets.

Thunderbirds were officially activated June 1, 1953, as the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit at Luke AFB, Arizona. The unit was nicknamed the “Stardusters.” Their first aircraft was the straight-winged F-84G Thunderjet. The team transitioned to the swept-winged F-84F Thunderstreak in 1955. In June 1956, the team moved to its current home at Nellis AFB in Nevada and traded the veteran F-84 for the world’s first supersonic fighter, the F-100 Super Sabre. In early 1964, the team changed briefly to the F-105B Thunderchief, but after only six shows returned to the F-100. In 1969 the team transitioned to the F-4E Phantom and then in 1974 to the T-38 Talon, a more fuel efficient jet.

In 1983 the Thunderbirds began flying the F-16 and continue to do so currently.

In August 2014, the B-52 Stratofortress celebrated 60 years in the air. The eightengine, 390,000-pound jet was America’s first long-range, swept-wing heavy bomber. It began as an intercontinental, high-altitude nuclear bomber, and its operational capabilities were adapted to meet changing defense needs. B-52s have been modified for low-level flight, conventional bombing, extended-range flights and transport of improved defensive and offensive equipment — including ballistic and cruise missiles that can be launched hundreds of miles from their targets.

The first B-52A flew Aug. 5, 1954. Production quickly converted to B-52Bs, with more weight capability and larger engines. The turbofan powered B-52H, the final version of the B-52, made its first flight March 6, 1961, and is still in service. With each variant, the B-52 increased in range, power and capability. In all, 744 B-52s were produced by Seattle, Wash., and Wichita, Kan., plants between 1952 and 1962.

Modern engineering analyses show the B-52’s expected lifespan extending beyond 2040 (85+ years after first flight). In May 2014, the Air Force introduced the first B-52 aircraft upgraded with a Boeing advanced communications system. The Combat Network Communications Technology (CONECT) modification added communication data links, displays with real-time intelligence feeds overlaid on active maps, a state-of-the-art computing backbone, and the ability to retarget a weapon, or mission parameters, in flight. The Air Force operates approximately 76 B-52Hs assigned to the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot AFB, North Dakota, and the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, which fall under Air Force Global Strike Command. The aircraft is also assigned to the Air Force Reserve Command’s 307th Bomb Wing at Barksdale AFB.

B-1 LANCER

THE “B-ONE”

The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is a supersonic variable-sweep wing, heavy bomber used by the United States Air Force. It is commonly called the “Bone” (from “B-One”). It is one of three strategic bombers in the U.S. Air Force fleet as of 2021, the other two being the B-2 Spirit and the B-52 Stratofortress. Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) won the design contest for what emerged as the B-1A. This version had a top speed of Mach 2.2 at high altitude and the capability of flying for long distances at Mach 0.85 at very low altitudes.

S WA N S O N G AT M A C H S P E E D Deliveries of the B-1B began in 1986 and formally entered service with Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a nuclear bomber that same year. By 1988, all 100 aircraft had been delivered. In the early 1990s, following the Gulf War and concurrent with the disestablishment of SAC and its reassignment to the newly formed Air Combat Command, the B-1B was converted for a conventional bombing role. It first served in combat during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and again during the NATO action in Kosovo the following year. The B-1B has supported U.S. and NATO military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. In February 2021, the USAF announced it will retire 17 B-1Bs, which will leave 45 aircraft in service. The Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider is to begin replacing the B-1B after 2025; all B-1s are planned to be retired by 2036.

The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the Armed Forces, established December 20, 2019 with enactment of the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. The USSF was established within the Department of the Air Force, meaning the Secretary of the Air Force has overall responsibility for the USSF, under the guidance and direction of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, a four-star general known as the Chief of Space Operations (CSO) serves as the senior military member of the USSF and is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

JOHN BLACK - SUPER DECATHLON

SET THE EXAMPLE NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE Originally from Dayton, Ohio John now lives as a local in Cocoa Beach, Florida. John credits his love of flying to his father and growing up in the “Birth Place of Aviation”. “My Dad instilled my love of flying; the Air Force Museum was our 2nd home. John learned to fly in 1984 when he was 17 at a little airport called Moraine Airpark. “I had my pilot’s license before I started my senior year of high school. My first aerobatic lesson was in a Super Decathlon before I was licensed. I still remember my first time upside down.”

John attended college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. He received a Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Engineering Technology and completed the A.F. ROTC program. “I spent my college summers back in Dayton at Moraine Airpark pumping gas, cleaning windshields, mowing the field, and flying everything I could get my hands on”. John was commissioned in the Active Duty Air Force in August 1989. He completed pilot training in April 1991 after a year of flying T-37s & T-38s.

John is now retired from military service. During his twenty one years in the Active Duty Air Force and Florida Air National Guard all his assignments were flying F-15A & Cs. He amassed 3600 hours of Eagle time and earned the rank of Lt Col. Even though John flies one of the best airplanes in the world he’s always held aerobatic flying close to his heart. “We bought our Super Decathlon in early 2002. It is a great airplane! I have a little over 1200 hours in Super Decathlons. I always tell people if I’m not at Kissimmee, or flying the Waco, you can find me at the airport tinkering with the Decathlon.”

John has flown over 60 types of aircraft flying more than 8200 sorties and 8100 hours in the last 37 years.

Stephen “Cajun” Del Bagno Memorial Scholarship Recipient The National Air, Sea & Space Foundation in partnership with the Florida Institute of Technology presented the first award of the Stephen “Cajun” Del Bagno Memorial Scholarship to Gabriella Ferra in February 2020.

Even though there aren’t any pilots or aviation-enthusiasts in Gabriella’s family, from a young age, Gabriella knew she wanted to be involved with aviation for the rest of her life. Ever since her first flight in a small Cessna at the age of four, she fell in love with the idea of making flying her career. Growing up, Gabriella became a member of several organizations such as Women in Aviation, The Ninety-Nines, AOPA, and EAA. Through those groups, she made valuable connections and was given enriching opportunities that would not have been possible otherwise. She soaked up knowledge like a sponge from aviation professionals and those with more experience in the field, constantly learning lessons she would soon apply in her own flight training. She worked through her Private Pilot Training as Page 24

her age would allow, starting lessons on her fifteenth birthday, soloing on her sixteenth birthday, and passing her check ride soon after her seventeenth birthday.

Gabriella shares her passion for flying as a mentor to other young women interested in aviation as a career through WAI’s annual Girls in Aviation Day and through discovery flights for kids as a member of the Young Eagles EAA program Today, Gabriella is a Multi-Engie Commercial Pilot and her plans are to become a Flight Instructor. Since midMarch FIT Aviation has been closed for flight training due to social distancing orders as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, so her training to become a Flight Instructor has been suspended until further notice. She is about halfway through CFI training and is hoping to get it finished early in the Fall semester as FIT Aviation resumes flying.

Gabriella believes the aviation industry is quickly adapting and implementing the technological advancements of our era, and she is excited to be a part of the development of the interactions between human and machine. She states, “Pilots are responsible for moving the world, and I hope to one day be a valuable contribution to this effort in a safe and accountable way.”

NORTH AMERICAN B-25 MITCHELL The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engined medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation used by many Allied air forces, in every theater of World War II, as well as other air forces after the war ended, and saw service across four decades. The B-25 first gained fame as the bomber used in the April 18, 1942 Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25Bs led

by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle attacked mainland Japan, four months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The B-25 raiders took off from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier and successfully bombed Tokyo and four other Japanese cities without loss. The mission gave a much-needed lift in spirits to the Americans, and alarmed the Japanese who had believed their cities were inviolable by enemy forces.

DOUGLAS C-47 SKYTRAIN The Douglas C-47 was a direct militarized variant of the Douglas DC-3 airliner. First flying on December 23rd, 1941, a mere sixteen days after the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor. When production ceased a total of 10,174 C-47’s had been produced with extensive service throughout WWII serving as the backbone for air transport in most theaters and as a pivotal piece of the allied invasion of mainland Europe.

Located at Space Coast Regional Airport in Titusville, the Valiant Air Command is dedicated to the preservation of Warbirds and remembering the men and women who flew, maintained and fought in them.

TBM AVENGER The TBM Avenger was a torpedo bomber developed for the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and eventually used by several forces around the world. It entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. The Avenger was the first aircraft to feature a new “compound angle” wing-folding mechanism created by Grumman, intended to maximize storage space on an aircraft carrier.

NORTH AMERICAN SNJ-4 The SNJ-4 is a derivative of a trainer ordered by the U. S. Army in 1935. The North American entry was ordered into production as the BT-9 and was followed by the BT-9A, B, and C. In 1936, the U. S Navy, under an Army contract, acquired 40 NJ-1s. The Army then designated it the AT-6 Texan and the Navy as the SNJ with the S standing for “Scout” which translates to advanced trainer. Ultimately more than 40 countries acquired this remarkable aircraft over a production run through the 1950s.

N2S STEERMAN The Stearman (Boeing) Model 75 is a biplane formerly used as a military trainer aircraft, of which at least 10,626 were built in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s.

Stearman Aircraft became a subsidiary of Boeing in 1934. Widely known as the Stearman, it served as a primary trainer for the United States Army Air Forces and Navy throughout World War II. Page 27
