01 THE LAST STOP DRAWING HONORABLE MENTION

Located in the Mission, an art district in downtown San Francisco, the project houses retired artists and art students in the adjacent school CCA. Both populations have a need to sharpen the mind, which is achieved by enhancing mobility. Therefore, the project enhances mobility on all scales, from as macro as traversing through the city by transit, to as micro as etching a pencil across paper. From the streetfront, the massing is carved out to canopy the existing bus stops, with retail surrounding each stop. The cluster typology leaves ample space on the ground floor for vehicular drop-off and pick-up. As the users move into the project, the winding circulation within each cluster evokes interest to encourage walking, while doubling as an art gallery. At the smallest, most human scale, each living unit is left intentionally open to facilitate the “sprawl”and the large radial movement of the body that is necessary to produce artwork. By virtue of this openness, every unit is a home without walls, where the spaces are delineated purely by the pinching of space, rather than the division of it.

Under the annual theme “Nexus,” students were tasked with a design build challenge: to build a structure they could transport, assemble, and inhabit for a weekend. The structure is conceptually drawn from a fan’s ability to spread open and fold closed. As a result, the project’s assembly is quick without any power tools and its transportation is effortless due to its collapsibility. The project won First Place Construction for the innovative joints that move to adapt to the site’s uneven terrain and collapse the structure for easy transportation.

Morro Bay is shaped by two filtration systems: the ecosystem filters pollutants from runoff and the human terraforming in the estuary filters chaos from the waves. The project rigorously examines filtration by physically siphoning water, filtering it through layers held together by wood frame, and pumping the clean product into servant spaces. The project is constantly at grade, using the site’s steep topography to its advantage to trickle water throughout the building. The framing system, the building envelope, becomes dense and sparse to delineate space. The entire building is a continuous ramp that wraps, like a ribbon. This allows for the project to not only filter water, but people as they wander down the project.

The most private spaces are at the bottom, the “subtracted,” while the most public spaces are at the top, the “added.”

ADRIENNE NG e | adrienne12ng@gmail.com p | +1 (858) 603-1953 Before architecture, I briefly worked in web design and studied Chinese painting under my grandfather. These experiences shaped my value for clarity, yet conciseness: to communicate a leaf through line drawing takes a long time time to etch out, but a leaf in Chinese painting is a single, precise stroke that requires less than a second.

In architecture, I believe that every iteration is an experiment where failure is critical to success. Although final production is digital, I love analog craft because I value the precision (and even accidents) of my own hands that reveal the most intricate solutions to uplift people.
