HARLEM JAZZ CENTER & HVAC FACILITY

The site of this project was on a triangular block in Harlem, New York. Some attributes and or programs of the building included multiple performance rooms, classrooms, backroom system services, and a large auditorium. This project was meant to bring the idea of performing jazz centers, back into the heart of harlem.

A jazz center that could be used by the public and students from nearby universities for performances, as well as a place to learn more about jazz and its historical importance to Harlem. Futhermore, the project also was an HVAC facility that ideally would manage and produce the HVAC for a number of buildings that neighbored the site.

MULTIPURPOSE RENEWABLE CONES

Swales Volume in gallons= 5445 gallons

Throughout this design, the formal quality and language of cones can be seen in nearly every decision made for both, the building’s facade and public ground level. The cone was used to design multipurpose elements that could lead to renewable solutions. For the landscape, the cones were used for there unique sloped edges and how they can guide

water to swales and or other receptacals during floods or heavy rainfall. The cones also provide seating, places for tree planters, and grassy patches for leisure. The cones on the facade of the building however, serve a different purpose. They include six different designs and sizes. The balconies include water collection systems, planters, and wonderful views.

SAVANNAH COTTAGE HOUSE

This project was centered around the challenge to take as much advantage of the given small savannah house lot as possible, while still creating enjoyable spaces and multi-leveled lofts within the walls of the given site. The limitations of site, invited the creation of interesting open spaces to emerge especially on the first floor with the open kitchen, living space, and garden

area all being open to the skylight by using the vertical inbetween space between the lots. The skylight is very important to the overall design because it creates a semiopen experience for the owners. Another important aspect of the project is the use of varied materials on the facade such as concrete, wood, and brick. The facade plays with a varied rectangular pattern.

SAVANNAH MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING

This project revolved around the idea of creating a multi-leveled housing building with several different sizes for families. The design has a stepped layout that highlights the corner of the site. This corner creates a public space that allows the community to gather and has a small coffee shop where they can sit and enjoy being on a busy city corner. The facade of the building is in the style of the historic brick and mortar

construction that can be seen in Savannah, Georgia. However, in this project, as the stepped floors go upwards, the scale of the bricks and space between them decreases. The window openings poke out further and further from the facade wall as the floors go upwards aswell. This manipulation of the brick scales and stepped floor layering creates unique qualities for the residents that differ from floor to floor.

BIOMIMIC CRAB PAVILIONS

The design of the pavilions started with the idea of using aspects of a creature, a crab, to influence the formal and behavorial qualities of the pavilions. I began to look at the specific movements and qualities of a crab’s walk to influence the designs. Not only did I learn about the unique stride of crabs, but also of the patterns that their footprints made in the sand.

Then, I began to use the information collected, to create a data script based off the points where the crab’s feet landed. This eventually lead to three different pavilions being shaped. These pavilions were designed to become enclosed rooftops galleries and outdoor perfomance spaces where artists and performers could showcase their talents to wider audiences.
