Through ongoing discussion, forethought and the joint experience of our Board of Trustees, it has been our privilege to participate in imagining a better Adrian College and to help bring those dreams to reality. It is our calling, our function and our passion to provide the best education possible for Adrian College students, and we are committed to continue on this intentional path.

We share in the long history of those who have come before and who imagined and worked toward creating and sustaining a distinguished college in Adrian. Its beautiful campus and numerous enhancements in recent years - from outstanding academic programs to extensive construction and renovation projects, to the lush green grass and the amazing view of the Mall from the new Madison Street Entrance, all are evidence of a caring community.

The annual State of the College gives us all an occasion to celebrate accomplishments and envision new opportunities together. This year we reflected on dreams past and future, some of which began ten years ago with a gathering of the campus community to imagine what Adrian College could and should become.

In the years since, many dreams have been realized and others set aside or reimagined. But, more importantly, we’ve learned that the life of the College and its students are in the hands of us all. We have the power to make dreams come true, to implement change, to motivate, to listen, and to create a positive campus culture where the lives of our students and their futures are shaped.

The topics you’ll read about here include new graduate programs, student achievements and research, additional improved housing, emerging athletics, outstanding community service, and more. These are evidence of the power of dreams and how by working together, we can make a lasting difference.

“When I joined the campus community ten years ago, we worked together to imagine what Adrian College could become and many dreams emerged,” Docking began the address.

The president of Adrian College went on to acknowledge the new addition and renovations to Peelle and Jones Halls, the historical renovation of Downs Hall and theatre, the state-of-the-art Rush Communication Arts building and the music addition to Spencer Hall. He also spoke of the enhancements to student life: expanded dining options such as WOW Café, the Bulldog Beanery and The Grille at Caine Student Center. Expansion to the weight and training facilities at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center is a highlight not only for current students, but prospective Bulldogs as well.

“Our campus is vibrant with dedicated faculty, committed staff and eager students who get to experience firsthand the amazing improvements in so many areas of campus life,” Docking said.

NEW GRADUATE PROGRAMS PRESENTED BY

LEXI LEWANDOWSKI - Student Last year the first master’s program students graduated from Adrian College in Athletic Training and Criminal Justice. This spring, another 13 students earned their graduate degrees in Athletic Training and Accounting. The interest and desire to attain a graduate degree has grown as the advantages for increased opportunities are recognized. The College currently offers four master’s programs: Accounting, Athletic Training, Criminal Justice and Industrial Chemistry. Two new proposed areas are traditional two-year programs for current students and individuals already in the field.

“THE INTEREST AND DESIRE TO ATTAIN A GRADUATE DEGREE HAS BEEN GROWING AS THE ADVANTAGES FOR INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES ARE RECOGNIZED.”

The Master of Arts in Sport Administration and Leadership is one of the proposed programs. Students will work with professors who have real life sport experience, are active members of premier sport management organizations, such as the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) and North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) and have presented at national and international conferences.

The sports management undergraduate program currently has over 100 students and prepares students to enter and succeed in careers in professional sports, minor league sports, intercollegiate sports, youth sports, as well as other areas. Students have obtained internships and jobs with the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons, Toledo - President Jeffrey R. Docking Mud Hens, Toledo Walleye, Detroit Sports Commission, Michigan International Speedway, Washington Redskins and Columbus Crew. The graduate program will build on this success and also invite working professionals who would like to advance within their organization.

Also pending is the proposed Masters of Education in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. The program introduces and cultivates research-based practices and provides broader knowledge of curriculum, design instruction and assessment, integrating technology in the classroom, mentoring and coaching. In addition, because teachers certified in the state of Michigan must renew their certification every five years, the program will help meet this requirement. This program will give students job security, higher pay and a teacher leadership endorsement­—ultimately positioning graduates for advancement in school districts.

GRANDPARENTS DAY PRESENTED BY

During the academic year the College offers numerous programs and events that reach beyond the campus, including, Sibs & Kids Weekend, Homecoming and athletic, cultural, social and educational activities. This year, the College decided to invite the grandparents of students to take part in a special day. Student Activities Coordinator, Katrina Wotten, and others implemented a program with attendance that exceeded expectations.

In September, Adrian College hosted the first annual Grandparents Day welcoming more than 80 new guests to campus. The experience offered a “day in the life” of a current student, including the opportunity to attend a class, a chapel service, take a tour and enjoy a meal at Ritchie Marketplace.

WRESTLING RETURNS PRESENTED BY

/// CHRIS WILLIAMS - Head Wrestling Coach

In 1984, the College held its final wrestling season and since then the sport has not been offered. With Lenawee County and other areas of the Midwest hosting successful wrestling programs at the high school level, the return of wrestling to Adrian garnered regional and national attention. Not only would the College offer a men’s program, but the introduction of a women’s team as well – the first in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

Coach Williams outlined that the men will wrestle folkstyle, which is very similar to high school, and the women will compete in freestyle, which is an Olympic style of wrestling.

The program has been well-received by prospective wrestlers, as well as national wrestling media channels. The new era of wrestling begins in fall 2015.

THE PRODUCTION HOUSE ROCKS PRESENTED BY

/// FRANK CRUPI AND ERICA KEENE - Students In the fall of 2014, Adrian College launched a new, staffdriven initiative: a production house. From broadcasting live events, to creating documentaries and news shows, the Production House offers student-learning opportunities in media arts outside of the classroom.

The House has hosted guest speakers, job shadowing opportunities and networking sessions with alumni working in the field, as well as offering remote broadcasting trips to cover national sporting events.

The intent of the programs offered through the Production House is to provide experience and confidence to students as they prepare to work professionally in the field.

STUDENT HOUSING UPDATES PRESENTED BY

/// TROY SCHMIDLI - Dean of Student Affairs LAURA SAMUELSON - Student A continually challenging topic on campus is student housing. The College made strides by adding over 600 premium rooms in themed houses, apartments and upgrades to Pellowe Hall. In March, an announcement was made to add other student housing options on campus, as well.

While the College becomes a second home to most students, their unique needs are at the forefront for housing options. As a response to the increasing demand of single suites, Cargo Hall will undergo significant renovations. The hall will reopen in 2016.

In addition, the College will make the two brick apartments near College View South on Michigan Avenue available to students this fall. These units will house an additional 34 students with the option of a single, double or triple room. These apartments have kitchens, living rooms and a bathroom similar to the existing College Court and Argyle residence options.

BULLDOG CHILDCARE CENTER PRESENTED BY

The College’s faculty and staff comprise nearly 400 employees, many of whom have very young children.

Often a central concern for working parents is quality childcare in a trusted environment. When Adrian College partnered to offer the IB Preschool at Lincoln Elementary, they addressed one of these concerns, however, a gap still remains for infants and toddlers.

Adrian College is pleased to announce that initial steps have been taken to clarify regulations and investigate possible locations for an on-campus childcare center.

This has been led by the Institute for Education, whose chief goal is to develop a program for students in early childhood development.

With the addition of the Bulldog Childcare Center, the College’s faculty and staff will have an incredible opportunity to make a simple, safe and very convenient choice for their family.

This unique possibility allows young parents to pursue their professional goals and keep the best interests of their family in mind.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCES ABOUND PRESENTED BY

/// JOSEPH STUTZMAN AND LINDSAY DURDEL - Students In recent years, the music program at the College has grown by leaps and bounds. From the reinstatement of a marching band, an all-new student orchestra and expanded special choirs and musical groups, the College boasts of an excellent learning and performing environment that is attractive to prospective students. Even more, the faculty has secured extraordinary opportunities for current students who will forever remember that special venue, artist or piece of music that impacted their lives.

For one student, the pursuit of music at Adrian College has offered exceptional opportunities, including: performing at Scholarship Days, conducting an original composition at Lessons & Carols and gaining acceptance into Westminster Choir College’s Master’s of Composition program.

Beyond the classroom, the Adrian College music department offers incredible performance opportunities including, most recently, a concert with Andrea Bocelli at Joe Louis Arena and plans to perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in October 2015.

PHASE II CONVENIENCE STORE PRESENTED BY

/// BLAKE HAIRSTON - Student SCOTT ROSSEN - General Manager, Sodexo Food is an important part of student life and the College is pleased to partner with Sodexo who has joined them in adding new and expanded venues across campus. In 2013, Phase I of the renovation to Caine Student Center took place which added the Bulldog Beanery and The Grille. Phase II includes the addition of a convenience store in the student center. This will enable students to grab a quick meal, shampoo, laundry detergent and small necessities.

The addition will create a simple but dramatic change to the food service space in Caine Student Center, consolidating all of the existing offerings into one area for students to easily access. Transformation of the space includes the conversion of the commuter and computer lounge to make room for the convenience store. Changes are also underway to the area where the Bulldog Beanery is currently located to include study and lounge tables. This new addition will offer extended hours of service to better meet the needs of the campus community.

The annual Ribbons of Excellence Day offers a look at student academic presentations on individual and group capstone and research projects. The students featured here have had the opportunity to study outside the classroom with the assistance of supportive faculty.

“THE ADVANTAGE OF A SMALL COLLEGE IS THE ABILITY AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO RESEARCH WITH COMMITTED FACULTY MEMBERS.” - President Jeffrey R. Docking

• We have been working together with Dr. Jeffrey Lake, assistant professor of biology, to research the role of disease organisms in preserving the number of different tree species in a forest. Using computer models to simulate the trees and fungi, we are focusing on how different fungi are more or less likely to kill their hosts. We are also collaborating with UCLA ecologist Steve Hubbell, who is developing the theoretical concept behind the research.

– Kelsey Williams and Andrea Deuschele • I conducted my research with the guidance of Dr. Linda Learman of the English department, on the Adrian College Writing Center and the misperception that ‘the Writing Center is an editing station meant for remedial students.’ I am also exploring how writing centers can better communicate that good writing is not just a matter of correctness, but of gaining mastery of varied writing processes and strategies.

– Hayden Garlick • I’m working on a presentation that combines both of my majors with a focus on performance and ethics. I compiled research on five specific musicals that present ethical problems and use my performing skills and training to relay the information in an entertaining and informative way. I have continually been assisted by Dr. Annissa Morgensen-Lindsay, Professor Michael Allen, and Professor Renee Collins from the theatre and journalism departments.

– Mia Gladieux • With the sponsorship of Dr. Stacey Todaro, assistant professor of psychology, I have been able to develop a theory that uses linguistics, cognitive neuroscience and clinical psychology to explain how the brain ascribes meaning to stressful environmental events. Specifically, it predicts that the words we use are crucial in the activation of certain beliefs. My overall aim is to use science to contribute to the field of psychology.

– James Crum • With exceptional assistance and mentoring from Cathie Royer, professor of art and design, I was encouraged to enter my artwork into a juried exhibition and as a result, I was awarded a fellowship to study glass blowing at OxBow School of the Arts in Saugatuck, Michigan. I continue to bring what I learned in the hot shop, and apply it to my paintings and other aspects in my life.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AT ITS BEST PRESENTED BY

Adrian College continues to encourage students to give back, in turn providing hope and inspiration to others. Through a strong partnership with the City of Adrian, Adrian College students provide outreach in many areas.

Last fall, over 500 freshmen participated in Community Plunge and gathered for a kick-off photo before heading to projects throughout the city. What happened next was unexpected.

A phone call from student Andrew Warren was made to Mayor Berryman to discuss additional community projects. That call led to a fall clean up of the downtown, decorating the light posts with holiday tinsel and bows, the placement of steel posts in Comstock Park for the City of Adrian’s first Christmas Tree Riverwalk, and returning weeks later to hang lights on the 34 trees. Yet, there was more to come.

Warren had heard that City Hall was doing a food drive and led Pi Kappa Alpha to become the single largest donor of canned items for the entire drive.

Their accomplishments led to the creation of the Mayor’s Community Service Award to be given to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated a willingness to make a difference. The first award was presented by Mayor Berryman to Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in January.

2015 CREATIVITY AWARD PRESENTED BY

/// JENNIFER ELSWORTH - Director, Institute for Creativity The annual Creativity Award is a competition on campus for the best creative ideas to enhance the College in a variety of ways. The winner receives a $1,000 award and the College sets aside up to $10,000 to fund the project.

Mr. Joe Wagley of the Wagley Group has provided the $1,000 award for the second consecutive year.

This year, the College received 113 submissions for the 4th Annual Creativity Award Competition. The process includes a blind review of entries to ensure fairness.

The Adrian College PRIDE Group (Promoting the Rights of Individuals with Disabilities Everywhere) believes that this is true for the HOPE Community Center members as well. PRIDE wanted to create an atmosphere where everyone is welcome and encouraged to experience the prom sensation: faculty, staff, students, HOPE and community members, all together on one magical evening. This would be a night where dreams really do come true.

As HOPE Community Center continues to evolve as an organization, the staff is looking to implement services that are high quality, cutting-edge, and life-changing for people with disabilities. The Sweetheart Prom met and exceeded these goals from its inception. It is a model that promotes full inclusion of people with disabilities into the community.

“In a world full of discrimination, nowhere else does an event better demonstrate social equality,” Fallon Bull of the HOPE Center said. “The kind of social interaction that happens where people with and without disabilities enjoy each other’s company as equals is what the disability field aspires to recreate.”

“After the first Adrian College Sweetheart Prom in 2012, I received an email from Francine Warner,” Danielle Ward added, and began to read a portion of what she had received.

“My son, who has cerebral palsy, had the time of his life on Saturday night. When we arrived to pick Andy up, I could hardly tell the AC students from the HOPE members. Everyone was smiling, dancing, wearing crowns and having lots of fun. These AC students gave their time and hearts to create lasting memories.”

THE PROM RAISED $900 FOR HOPE CENTER, WHICH WAS PRESENTED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PRESENTATION.

Student, Chris Liberati agrees. “Two years ago, I was provided an opportunity to make a new friend in the community. My relationship with Andy, who you saw with me in the video, has not only made me a better man, but it has allowed me to learn how to give to another human being, as well as receive from him. I’d like to take a moment to say hi to my friend Andy, who is here with us today. We have learned so much from one another. I have learned from Andy how to be considerate and patient, among many other things. But the best part of all of this for me is that I have gained a new brother for life. I am thankful that I was given this opportunity to discover a dream and realize it during my time at Adrian College.”
