September 21st of every year is World Alzheimer’s Day. This interna onal campaign launched in 2012 and is working to raise awareness and challenge the common s gma that surrounds Alzheimer’s disease and related demen a. From previous studies, an average 2 out of 3 people globally have li(le or no understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and associated demen a in their countries. According to the Alzheimer’s Associa on, every 65 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease or other demen a in the US. At current rates, experts believe the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s will quadruple to as many as 16 million by the year 2050. By 2040, more than 242,000 in Wisconsin. There are many s gmas associated with Alzheimer’s disease or other demen a that can hinder people living with the disease, as well as their families and those working to support them. S gmas nega vely impact service structure and delivery, care, and quality of life for all involved. When a person becomes stereotyped, ‘s gma zed,’ it becomes difficult for them to be perceived as anything but that stereotype. Then they are perceived through the lens of that stereotype and labels are created within that perspec ve. The dehumanizing of people o2en starts with s gma. There are a few ways to help reduce the s gma of Alzheimer’s disease and other demen a: Start by learning and understanding the facts.
