A cooking class for caregivers caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other demen2a.

Join Chef Instructor Kevin Brown at CVTC’s instructional kitchen for an interactive cooking class. This course is geared towards the family caregiver caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. You’ll understand how to prep and plan meals and how to use a variety of kitchen cooking tools and equipment. In consultation with Pam VanKampen, Registered Dietitian with the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources, Kevin will teach you how to make nutritious, affordable, and simple meals prepared together using recipes that work in small portions that you can take back and recreate at home.

Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period is coming soon.

Open Enrollment Period Be sure to add this to your fall checklist if you have a Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan. Every October 15 - December 7 year insurance companies can change their list of covered drugs and their pricing structure, known as the plan formulary. This means that even if you are taking the same medications, the amount you pay for your medications may change next year. The plans’ premiums, deductibles, and copays can also change each year. All Medicare beneficiaries should review their current coverage during Find out what your plan’s costs and coverage will be next year and compare it with other options based on your prescription medications and other needs or preferences.

You may decide you’re happy with your plan’s costs and coverage details for 2019. In that case, you won’t need to do anything. Or, you may find a plan that is better suited to your needs and your budget. Shopping around to find what’s best for you is always a good idea, but you don’t have to do it alone. Free, unbiased assistance with plan comparisons is available from Aging & Disability Resource Center Benefit Specialists, who will accept open enrollment appointments beginning October 2019.

Planning: An Important Resource for Spousal Caregivers

We are excited to welcome Heather to the ADRC team!

Solo caregiving for a spouse does have some positives.

Doing so can be a meaningful and valued personal experience that connects the caregiver to their loved one. It also allows the caregiver more control by avoiding any arguments among multiple caregivers on how to proceed. At the same time, spouses as caregivers experience more burden and depression than other family members do.

Families must take into account that older adults caring for a spouse are very often coping with illness and disability themselves. In some cases, couples have functioned like two parts of a wholeͶdependent on one another to get by. Caregivers in this situation are particularly vulnerable when they don’t have help, and the surviving spouse may well lose their ability to live in their home once they are on their own. In these situations, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish the caregiver from the care recipient.

As our reliance on family caregivers to assist seriously ill older adults at home increases, the need to provide assistance to couples caring for one another pulls focus.

Programs like the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) play a prominent role in helping caregiving spouses access paid help.

If you are an older adult providing care to your spouse, the Caregiver Program can help you take a look at available resources and find support. Respite and selfͲcare are important priorities, as is understanding what you are capable of providing as time goes on.

Important considerations include:

• What happens when your home no longer works for your needs?

• What are your options given your health status and financial situation?

• How do you stay connected in the community?

• What are your wishes for endͲofͲlife care?

Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder is a new program designed to give women the tools they need to take control of bladder and bowel symptoms. It provides information and group activities along with simple exercises and dietary changes to practice at home.

Even if you don’t have leakage symptoms now, it’s never too early or too late to think about bladder and bowel health!

Yes, VA pays emergency room visits for Veterans, but only if‌

Veterans are on the hook to pay about $800,000 from claims for more than 219,000 emergency room visits that were denied by Veterans Affairs. Mainly because veterans simply don't understand the rules about emergency room visits at non-VA facilities.

Without insurance, ER visits can start anywhere between $150 to $3,000.

If surgery is required, add another $20k. A doctor fee could then add hundreds or thousands of dollars to the final cost. It adds up quickly.

Which is why VA is trying to get the word out regarding which ER visits are covered and which are not.

Generally, VA pays for emergency medical care if the visit is treating the veteran’s service-connected condition or if the care is related to the service-connected condition. If the visit is for something else, the VA can still pay, but there are three main requirements before VA will take on the bill.

1. The amount VA can pay depends on if the veteran has health insurance. • If the veteran has insurance, VA can pay only after the health insurer has paid or denied the claim.

Also, VA will pay only after the veteran has made any required copayments, cost shares or deductibles. • If the veteran does not have insurance, VA can pay the bill, but the amount is capped at 70 percent of Medicare rates.

2. At the time of the emergency a VA medical facility or other federal facility wasn’t reasonably available.

3. At the time of the emergency the veteran was enrolled in VA healthcare and has received medical services at VA within the last 24 months.

VA can pay for emergency visits for nonservice-connected conditions, but there are a few requirements that effect VA’s ability to pay. And all five of the following requirements must be met before VA will consider payment.

Care was provided in a hospital ER or similar public facility that provides emergency treatment to the public.

The emergency was of such a nature that the veteran (or other prudent person without medical training) believe that any delay in medical attention would put their life or health in jeopardy.

A VA medical facility or another Federal facility wasn’t reasonably available to provide care.

The veteran is enrolled and has received care at a VA facility during the 24 months before the ER visit.

The veteran is financially liable to the provider of emergency treatment.

The VA has a few limitations to what it can pay if the veteran has health insurance. If the insurance doesn’t cover the entire cost of treatment, VA can pay some costs that the veterans is personally liable to pay.

However, by law VA cannot pay copayments, coinsurance, deductibles or similar payments a veteran owes to the provider as required by their personal insurance.

Once the emergency need has been met, someone should contact your closest VA medical clinic within 72 hours. VA staff can then help you understand what’s eligible for payment and what’s not. Claims for treatment outside the VA should be submitted as quickly as possible. For service-connected conditions, you have up to two years to file your claim. People have consistently recycled at home since the early 1990’s, and it has become a commonly accepted practice. There are still many questions about what can be recycled or should just go in the trash.

Here are your CURBSIDE recycling rules: ▪ Plastic CONTAINERS only. #1, #2, and #5 are the only plastics that are effectively getting recycled at this time.

▪ Other plastic items, like blister packaging, berry clamshells, plastic bags and wraps, toys, and hard plastics, should not be recycled in your bin.

▪ Aluminum and bimetal cans should be clean, the lid dropped inside, and the label left on.

▪ Glass bottles have a rule of thumb, if it has a “neck” it can be recycled, like a soda or wine bottle.

Remove the caps but leave the label on.

▪ Office paper, pantry boxes, cardboard, newspaper, paperback books, and magazines are all recyclable ▪ Boxes from the fridge and freezer may be recyclable, but if frozen food is not in a plastic wrap or tray, put the box in the trash. Soda and beer cartons are recyclable now.

▪ Do NOT put plastic bags or films in your recycling bin. Recycle them at a store drop off like Walmart, Target, or Festival.

▪ Eau Claire County is single stream, so everything goes into one bin together.

▪ Anything not listed here should not go in your bin.

Summer Swim Series: Swim in the Chippewa Valley

Our summer swim series highlighted the potenEal for adults of any ability to find helpful training tools, camaraderie and friendly compeEEon through US Masters Swimming. If you are ready to ‘head to the pool,’ this arEcle is about ways you can enjoy the benefits of swimming in the Chippewa Valley. While there is currently no US Masters Swimming coach available in this area, you can sEll join US Masters Swimming for skill building resources and compeEEon. Whether or not you choose to join a swimming organizaEon, the YMCA in Chippewa and Eau Claire, which are now under one associaEon called the YMCA of the Chippewa Valley, offer an exciEng variety of opportuniEes for adult swimming.

YMCA Eau Claire Branch offers a growing number of programs for adult swimmers: Joint EffortsͲ a lowͲimpact workout for adults with arthriEc or join pain. Shallow water, lowͲintensity workout with a social aspect.

HydroͲAerobicsͲ this class uses the water's resistance to improve join health and strengthen the body. Living Well with Demen'a, by Russell Martoccio. Pride and Joy

What do the words Pride and Joy mean to you? Having traveled to county fairs this summer, I discovered a new depth to the meaning of these words. While walking through the 4ͲH small animal barns at the Eau Claire County Fair, I asked a li$le girl about her blue ribbon winning lamb. She jumped out of the pen with eyes bright and full of excitement and told me all about the amount of (me and care she had given to her lamb since birth. I was mesmerized by her simplicity, wholesomeness and awareness as she was telling me her story. The quality of care that she was giving to her lamb came directly from her heart. She made a commitment to her lamb months ahead of (me and fully realized the daily responsibili(es of stewarding one of God’s living crea(ons. At her young age she already knows life's core values, like responsibility, hard work and stewardship that will stay with her throughout her life. What pride and Joy!

My takeͲaway lesson was this: She fully understands the importance and value of hard work and has learned that nothing is a$ainable without se4ng goals and implemen(ng efforts to get there. Like daily life it gives her a reason to wake up each day and be a caretaker for someone other than herself. These values struck a chord in my heart. Why? Because I now understand that memory loss has not affected my ability to feel love and care in my heart. I was able to see her and be able to get outside of myself without being judgmental. She did not know that she was teaching me her love language and helping me to understand that life can be wonderful and full of beauty no ma$er what stage of memory loss you're coping with. That dose of pride and joy has nourished my soul!
