Annual Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Starts October 15!

Do you to receive Medicare? If so, it is important to note that the annual open enrollment period is October 15 through December 7. This is the when you can make changes to your Medicare plan selections for 2020. **The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new Medicare Plan Finder (MPF) and process which includes each individual registering on MyMedicare.gov with a username and password. Due to this update, our process with how we can assist will also be different.

The ADRC will have a few options available to assist with the open enrollment process. ** Please note that we have a very limited amount of individual appointments available, we will not take any walkͲins for these appointments.

These appointments are on a first come first served basis.

Medicare Open Enrollment

Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment period is a good %me to review your current coverage and decide if there may be a be)er fit based on changes to current plans, your budget or health needs. During Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs October 15ͶDecember 7, 2019, you can enroll in or make changes to your Medicare health or prescrip%on drug plan. Your changes take effect on January 1, 2020. If you miss the deadline, you will likely have to wait a full year before you are able to make changes to your plan.

To evaluate plans during Medicare Open Enrollment follow these 5 important steps: 1. Review your current plan no%ce. Read any no%ces from your Medicare plan about changes for next year, especially your “Annual No%ce of Change” le)er. Look at your plan’s informa%on to make sure your drugs are s%ll covered and your doctors are s%ll in network.

2. Think about what ma)ers most to you. Medicare health and drug plans change each year, and so can your health needs. Do you need a new primary care doctor? Does your network include the specialist you want for an upcoming surgery? Does your current plan cover your new medica%on? Does another plan offer the same coverage at a lower cost? Take stock of your health status and determine if you need to make a change.

Find out if you qualify for help paying for Medicare. Learn about programs in your state to help with the costs of Medicare premiums (through Medicare Savings Programs), your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) deduc%bles, coinsurance and copayments, and Medicare prescrip%on drug coverage costs (through Extra Help). Visit your county Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) or aging unit to get screened for these programs.

Shop for plans that meet your needs and fit your budget. The Medicare Plan Finder is a tool created by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to help you view and examine the drug plans and health plans available in your county. You can compare plan premiums, copays, es%mated annual outͲofͲpocket costs, as well as coverage of the medica%ons you take. If you would like to priva%ze your Medicare benefits into an Advantage health plan, you can examine the coverage op%ons and provider networks. You can access the Plan Finder at www.medicare.gov. The current Plan Finder tool has been around since 2006 when Medicare Part D first started. The CMS has been upda%ng the online Plan Finder to improve func%onality and make it more consumer friendly. The new Plan Finder is expected to be released in September 2019. Remember, during Medicare Open Enrollment, you can decide to stay in Original Medicare or join a Medicare Advantage Plan. If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch back to Original Medicare during Open Enrollment.

Check your plan’s Star Ra%ng before you enroll. The Medicare Plan Finder is up to date with the Star Ra%ngs for Medicare health and prescrip%on drug plans. Plans are given an overall quality ra%ng on a 1 to 5 star scale, with 1 being the lowest and 5 stars being the highest. You can use Star Ra%ngs to compare the quality of health and drug plans being offered.

Public Hearings on the Eau Claire County 2020 Specialized Transportation Grant Specialized transportation, or paratransit, is an essential program for adults 60 and older and adults with disabilities and who are unable to use or access the bus or safely drive and need transportation. The 2020 proposal includes a total budget of $267,223 which will be used to provide these transportation services.

An Apple a Day for Apple Month Fall is oďŹƒcially here and what beHer way to enjoy the season than by celebraIng NaIonal Apple Month this October! There are hundreds of ways to celebrate their avor and health beneďŹ ts in dishes and snacks! Baked, whole, juiced, steamed, cooked, they’re all great ways to enjoy the nutriIous fruit!

Apples are packed full of ďŹ ber! Research shows that the ďŹ ber in apples helps to reduce cholesterol and lower the risk of heart disease.

Fiber is also important for prevenIng consIpaIon. One apple gives you about 10% of your daily vitamin C, and contains about 195 mg of potassium which is about 8% of the recommended intake. Apples are packed with polyphenols, anIoxidants, and vitamin C. No wonder the popular saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away�, promotes the idea of fewer doctors’ visits. With so many great nutrients you can’t go wrong with eaIng an apple a day!

Whole Grain of the MonthÍ´Flaxseed Flaxseed is especially high in omegaͲ3 faHy acids and also contains a signiďŹ cant amount of vitamin B1, copper, manganese, ďŹ ber, magnesium, phosphorus, and selenium. Two tablespoons of axseed provide about 4 grams of dietary ďŹ ber. Consuming axseed may reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood, as the primary omegaͲ3 faHy acid in axseeds can be helpful to the cardiovascular system. Because some unripe and raw axseed can have certain toxins, keep serving sizes to less than 50 grams (5 tablespoons of whole axseed) per day. Try a tablespoon of ground axseed to your hot or cold breakfast cereal or smoothie, to mayonnaise or mustard when making a sandwich, into an 8Ͳounce container of yogurt, bake ground axseed into cookies, muďŹƒns, breads and other baked goods. Flaxseed should be taken with plenty of water or other uids. Flaxseed shouldn't be taken at the same Ime as oral medicaIons or other dietary supplements.

Healthy Living with Chronic Pain Healthy Living With Chronic Pain is the newest workshop in our evidenced-based self-management program series. It was developed by pain experts at McGill University and Memorial University of Newfoundland in collaboration with Stanford University. It meets for 2 hours once weekly for six weeks, 15 hours. A lifetime of new options for managing your pain!

Participant testimony: “I enjoyed this class on chronic pain and it has helped in so many ways. I now do the [Moving Easy Program] exercises almost daily and also do the balance exercises. The journal of food has actually helped me with my night eating. Who knew that would be a side benefit? I also know now that on average I get 5-7 veggies and fruits daily.

12 Living Well with Dementia A Moment Captured in Time, by Russell Martoccio Autumn in Wisconsin seems to come without warning at a time when the fruitful days of midsummer are beginning to wane but when it still seems as though food, endless plenty, and the warmth must go on forever.

Then, almost imperceptibly, a burst of activity is evident in a growing urge to store seeds and cones. Geese are now gathering for the migration south. There is the sense of little time and that all must hurry before it is too late. A somberness comes to the land and with it a feeling of welcome quiet and relief.

The flaming magnificence of fall is now all around me. I breath in the fresh autumn air knowing that the cycle is almost complete. My heart and soul are grateful to be able to witness this change! Acceptance of change is necessary for living well with my memory loss. The acceptance of things I cannot change and the courage to change the things that I can, and (hopefully) the wisdom to know the difference.

I recently watched a movie called "Iron Lady" about the life of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher which strongly resonated with me. While in office she was described as 'A Tigress surrounded by Hamsters'. A grocer's daughter, educated as a scientist at Oxford, she was strong and unyielding in a male dominated cabinet. Later in life she was diagnosed with dementia. While the movie highlights her struggles with memory loss it continues to focus on her personal qualities.

She lived with grace, purpose and dignity though all the while still believing she was Prime Minister. She grieved the death of her husband but always knew he was still with her. Never confined to internal exile, never dwelling on her losses but focusing on what she still had... a life captured in a moment.

What this movie revealed to me is that living with memory loss is an individual adventure. I can choose to be strong, confident and determined or I can choose to live my diagnosis and turn my will and life over to the care of others. Remember that this season of life counts. It is not an afterthought. I continue to discover a new and adventurous life.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

A serene evening, a daring and frighUul adventure. Can I swim, actually swim again?

As I stepped into the pool, the water was warm. I proceeded carefully and quietly down the steps, immersed myself, and then, with great anxiety, pushed off. With great determinaIon, I went into my favorite breast stroke and frog kick. It worked! Thank you, God.

Beginning about three years before my surgery, I had difficulty processing most parts of my life which were slowly disappearing: interpersonal communicaIon, reading, cooking, wriIng, walking, swimming, volunteering ʹ a withdrawal from life. Finally, I even had to complete PowerͲofͲAHorneys papers so my husband could sign my name. Today? I do all of the above! I am BACK!

How did this incredible improvement happen? My persistent and caring physicians at Mayo Clinic Health System did not give up on my many issues. AWer many tests, they diagnosed Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). Surgery followed; recovery was rather slow. Today my life has fully returned. A Miracle.

NPH is oWen overlooked in older adults. The Hydrocephalus AssociaIon refers to NPH as the “treatable demenIa” and esImates that only 20% of adults with NPH are correctly diagnosed and are instead considered to have Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, or “just old age.”

InformaIon about NPH is important to know, to be aware of ʹ parIcularly as we age. A presentaIon will be done for the evening meal at the Senior Center on October 22, 2019, providing further informaIon on this condiIon. My goal is to help others get diagnosis and treatment to avoid what I experienced.

The Eau Claire County Veterans Services Office can help Eau Claire County veterans and their families obtain federal benefits and services from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and state benefits from the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA).

Staff represent veterans and their family members by serving as their accredited representative for matters pertaining to VA benefits and entitlements and can assist veterans with obtaining benefits.

Report from The Low Vision Fair

1 in 28 Americans age 40 and above have low vision. Recently, we had a low vision fair in Eau Claire. About 75 people came to learn about resources for living with low vision, provided by fiSeen vendors and individuals.

Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired (www.wcblind.org phone: 800Ͳ783Ͳ5213) is a MadisonͲ based organiza%on, but they do offer webinars and a Sharper Vision store that might have gizmos of interest to you. As they point out on their website, vision loss can occur at any age, but as the popula%on ages, ageͲrelated eye diseases such as macular degenera%on, diabe%c re%nopathy and glaucoma will increase.
