November 2018 November is National Family Caregiver Month, a time to recognize and thank the many hard working and devoted people who make it their mission to keep a loved one happy and safe. You work hard and deserve to be recognized and celebrated! Caregivers come from all walks of life and care for people with an array of needs.

C ra Na onal Caregiver Month Wisconsin’s theme for Family Caregiver Month is, You Might Be A Caregiver If….” We chose this theme because it gives a real-life view of what caregiving is like. It encourages humor rather than promoting burden and recognizes the valued role and dedication of our state’s caregivers. And it gives caregivers a fun way to connect with each other as they add their own ending to the phrase.

In hopes of bringing some smiles and perhaps a chuckle to your day, here are some ways that might mean you are a caregiver. You might be a caregiver if…

What does caregiving mean to you? How would you end the phrase, “You might be a caregiver if…?” What have you learned as a result of caring for someone? What are some things you do regularly, that you didn’t do before? What is different about your life now, that someone else wouldn’t understand unless they, too, were a caregiver?

As you ponder these questions, remember you are valued, respected and appreciated. Thank you for all that you do to help another person enjoy life to the fullest!

Age: When It Isn’t Just a Number ▪ Jennifer Speckien, ADRC Director A quick Google search of “anti-aging” gives you 13.6 million results. The entire first page of results includes things like anti-aging diet, anti-aging skin creams, etc.- a plethora of consumer goods, tips and tricks to avoid the perception “aging”. In my opinion when one Google searches anti-aging, the very first result should be ageism. Ageism is a prejudice on the grounds of someone’s age…or in my opinion, anti-aging- to be against aging. If you think about it, we should all be pro-aging. If we aren’t aging, that really means that we are no longer living. Every single day we all age. It is a gift that should be embraced.

As a society we have made a lot of assumptions about what it is like to grow older. Unfortunately, many of those assumptions come with negative connotations which create these prejudices. We have also made these prejudices acceptable, to some degree, by buying the anti-aging product or laughing at the aging jokes. Until we start seeing these things has harmful, ageism will continue to exist, harming the largest growing demographic of people in this country today.

A perfect example of ageism and its ripple effects comes with notion of memory loss. We hear things all the time like “oh, I had a senior moment” to describe forgetfulness. The problem is, we are all forgetful at some point in our lives - when we are children, we forget things - when we are teenagers, we forget things - when we are adults, we forget things. It happens. By labeling forgetfulness as a ‘senior moment’ we devalue the older person and create an image that all older people are forgetful which just isn’t true. Things like this then create challenges for those that truly are experiencing memory impairment from seeking treatment or telling their friends that they were diagnosed with dementia. And the thing is, people can acquire dementia at really any adult stage of life. We see people diagnosed in their 30s, 40s, and 50s on an all to regular basis.

If this article is moving you to do something

different, I would highly encourage you to seek out the book “Disrupt Aging” by Jo Ann Jenkins. There are so many opportunities that exist because people are living longer lives. This book talks about our need as a society to embrace aging and all that it has to offer. Another great book is “This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism” by Ashton Applewhite.

Really, what this all boils down to is valuing all of the members of society for what they have to offer.

We shouldn’t sell anyone short just because they are older than you. It is about each of us taking the opportunity to care for ourselves in a way that we can maximize our time here on earth with quality years. It is all about living.

So the next time you go to buy a birthday card for someone, pick the card that is uplifting and positive to celebrate their years instead of the one with the bad over-the-hill joke. Or when you go to pick out their birthday balloons, steer clear of black. Set your prejudice aside and start seeing aging for the amazing gift that it is!

The Older Americans Act and Elder Benefit Specialist

The purpose of the OAA is intended to improve the quality of life for all older Americans by helping them remain independent and productive.

The Title III grants are for state and community programs serving any individual age 60 and over. There is no income or asset test, but special attention is given to people who have low income, live in rural areas, or are part of a minority population. Each state receives funds based on a percentage of the nation’s population of individuals age 60 and older.

Annual Medicare Open Enrollment The annual open enrollment period is October 15 through December 7. This is the time frame when you can make changes to your Medicare plan selections for 2019.

A sincere thank you to Group Health Coopera.ve of Eau Claire for organizing and working so hard to raise dona.ons for Meals on Wheels. Group Health heard about the need Meals on Wheels had to purchase another refrigerator and freezer. The team organized a dona.on drop off at the Coffee Grounds farmer’s market as well as an onͲline dona.on campaign. Not only did they work hard to collect dona.ons they matched the first $2,500. Thank you to all who donated to the fundraiser.

Winter Weather & Meals on Wheels If the Eau Claire Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Meals on Wheels delivery and Senior Dining will be closed also.

If you receive Meals on Wheels we ask that you arrange for your sidewalks, steps, entryways and driveways be cleared of snow and ice to ensure the safety of our delivery volunteers. Dementia Friendly Business More than 70 businesses, organizations, and faith communities have been through a presentation and/ or training on dementia since the dementia friendly initiative began in May 2014! Thank you to all the organizations who have received the dementia training and for supporting the community and raising awareness for those living with dementia and their caregivers.

Alzheimer's Family Caregiver Support Program (AFCSP) Are you caring for a loved one with dementia in your home?

You may be eligible for financial assistance through Alzheimer's and Family Caregiver Support Program (AFCSP).

Funding can be used for in-home respite, adult day services, personal care services, adaptive equipment, home delivered meals, transportation to name a few.

The individual with dementia must be living in the home, have diagnosis of irreversible dementia from a physician, and have an annual gross income of $48,000/ year or less. $2,000 - $4,000 may be available, Contact Lisa Wells at Aging & Disability Resource Center, 715-839-4750.

In 2007, Highway 12 was getting a face lift so we put a “For Sale” sign on the cafe and moved onward. Started for a short time at Sacred Heart packaging Meals on Wheels. I was a Supervisor for UWEC for almost 10 years...And now I am here!!!

13 The Eau Claire Aging and Disability Resource Center adaptive equipment loan program has a variety of mobility aids and devices that are available to provide support as well as to enable your loved ones to lead active and ful lling lives. Whether you or your loved one are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out rst, or needing something for a short amount of time, the loan program can be a useful.

Toilet Safety Frame: ts easily around a toilet to provide safe support and assistance while sitting or rising. This toilet rail system can also be used for added stability and safety for getting around all over the bathroom or for standing at the sink. Height adjusts 27” 33” and is rated for 300 pounds.

Bed Rail: can provide safety while in bed and can help users to enter and to exit the bed. This bed rail is fully adjustable in both height and depth so that it can t many bed types.

Horseradish Mashed It has been one year since the start of the Meals on Wheels kitchen in Potatoes Banana Nut Muffin Fall Creek. We first started making meals for the Augusta Senior and Community Center congregate meal site, then slowly transitioned all the other routes and sites by January 1. A sincere thank you for your patience, understanding & encouragement during that transition time. In one year we have grown to about 400 meals every day, including providing meals to a small portion of Chippewa County.

That is a lot of seniors that we are touching everyday and the Meals on Wheels staff are proud to be able to do that.

My Greatest Challenge: Finding Positive Outcomes in Alzheimer’s, Judy Fuhrer

Hello everyone, it’s great to be with you this month! I have been blessed in my life to have grown up with great parents. There were four of us kids in the family and whenever one of us was experiencing a major disappointment in life, each of us was challenged to find one positive outcome that could occur as a result of experiencing the disappointment.

When I was facing my senior year in high school, my father’s work required moving from the big city of Buffalo, New York to the small town of Plymouth, Michigan. The move affected me the most. We all got together as a family and were able to come up with many advantages to living in a small town. The high school in Plymouth was much smaller than the high school in Buffalo and therefore it was much easier to get to know all of the students in my class. In addition, the school put on many plays each year and was always in need of actors. Acting had always been my talent so I was thrilled for the opportunity to play a variety of roles in many plays. Plymouth High did not have a Pep Club for their sports teams but the students and teachers were excited when I asked to start one. It became an immediate success. My senior year ended up being the best year I could have imagined!

Now I am facing the most difficult challenge of my life after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It is difficult to find any positive outcomes in this daunting challenge. However as a result of my experience with Alzheimer’s, I have discovered more strength within myself than I thought possible. I have also gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of the support I receive from my family and others which helps me face the future with less fear as this disease progresses. It continues to be my goal to live the best life possible with this disease, and hopefully help others live well with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.
