Every May, the Administra#on for Community Living (ACL) leads our na#on’s observance of Older Americans Month. The 2020 theme is: Make Your Mark.

ACL selected this theme to encourage and celebrate countless contribu#ons that older adults make to our communi#es. Their #me, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. Communi#es, organiza#ons, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. This year’s theme highlights the difference everyone can make ʹ in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communi#es.

We invite you to celebrate Older Americans Month and make your mark in May! Leading up to the observance, ACL will release artwork, ac#vity sugges#ons, and announcements when new resources are posted to the official website, acl.gov/oam

ADRC Response to the Coronavirus Emergency

The ADRC office is temporarily closed to the public in response to the current outbreak of COVIDͲ19; however, we are s ll providing services by phone and email. We are s ll here to help.

The health and safety of our customers, volunteers and staff is of utmost concern. Con&nuing to deliver services in a modified manner is also a top priority.

Summary of our response so far to the current emergency:

• Classes, support groups, workshops etc are postponed un&l further no&ce. Some are being held electronically; reach out for support individually if desired.

• Meals on Wheels is con&nuing to deliver meals. Thank you to the volunteers and nutri&on staff!

• Senior Dining sites at St. Johns and Fairchild are now Grab n Go meals; Augusta site and LE Phillips Senior Center are temporarily closed.

For Medicare claims, date of service March 1, 2020 until the end of the Public Health Emergency, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been allowed to give more flexibility for certain services. These changes apply to Medicare Advantage plans as well, however please check with your plan before assuming services will be covered.

Telehealth services Since many doctor’s offices have to restrict nonͲessential in person visits, Medicare beneficiaries may have more flexibility to use the phone, audio/visual apps on smart phones, (Facetime, Zoom), or online patient portals to communicate with their healthcare provider. Give your provider a call to find out your options for services. Usual charges for visits, deductibles and copays will apply to Telehealth services unless it is related to COVIDͲ19. If it is related to COVID19 it will be covered at no cost to the patient.

Skilled Nursing Care Medicare will waive the required 3 night hospital stay for paid skilled nursing rehab in certain situations where the person is affected by the pandemic, such as not being able to return home safely.

Services for those with COVIDͲ19 Medicare will cover lab tests related to COVIDͲ19 at no cost, and all medically necessary hospitalizations (even if you are quarantined there due to having the virus). Medicare Part D will cover a vaccine for the COVIDͲ19 virus at no cost, as soon as there is one available.

If you think you have COVIDͲ19 Call your Doctor’s office. If you have any of the following symptoms get medical help immediately or call 911: Trouble breathing, Persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, bluish lips or face.

Finally, be aware of scammers; do not give your Medicare card information over the phone or internet to anyone, unless you know you are speaking to your medical provider’s office. Also check your Medicare Summary Notices for errors and stay on guard against scammers as usual.

Fraud Surrounding COVIDͲ19 is On the Rise As the number of people and communi#es affected by the COVIDͲ19 pandemic grows, so do the scams associated with it.

Scammers use public health emergencies as opportuni#es for new fraud schemes. And because older adults are at greater risk for serious illness from this virus, they are at increased risk of being targets. During this medical crisis facing our na#on, it is important to have the facts surrounding COVIDͲ19, to be aware of the poten#al for scams, and to know what you can do to protect yourself. Currently there is no FDAͲapproved vaccine for COVIDͲ19 and although there may be treatments for symptoms, there is no “cure”. However, scammers oNen use fearͲbased tac#cs to convince people that a vaccine or cure is now being offered.

Key Points Beware of anyone contac#ng you in person, on the computer or by phone, claiming to have a cure or vaccine.

• Do not give your Medicare number, Social Security number, or any personal informa#on in response to unsolicited calls, text, email, or home visits.

• Be suspicious of anyone offering anything related to COVIDͲ19 such as tes#ng kits, any supplies, or treatments. Hang up (or shut the door).

• Don’t succumb to fearͲbased tac#cs of scammers. Cut off those who make you afraid and contact familiar sources instead.

Also, remember that although the Centers for Disease Control and Preven#on (CDC) and other public health officials may contact you, they will not ask for your insurance number or financial informa#on.

What Does Medicare Cover in Rela3on to COVIDͲ19?

• Medicare Part B covers COVIDͲ 19 tests when ordered by your doctor or health care provider on or aNer February 4, 2020.

• Medicare covers all medically necessary hospitaliza#ons, including extra days in the hospital for pa#ents who had to stay longer under COVIDͲ19 quaran#ne. x There is no vaccine for COVIDͲ 19 at this #me; however, if one becomes available, Medicare Part D will cover it.

• Medicare also recently expanded coverage of telehealth services to enable beneficiaries to access a wider range of services from their provider without having to travel to a facility.

R This includes access to doctors, nurse prac##oners, clinical psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers.

R During this emergency, there are also more op#ons for the ways your provider can talk with you under this provision.

What You Can Do • Contact your own doctor if you are experiencing poten#al symptoms of COVIDͲ19.

• Carefully review your Medicare Summary No#ce (MSN) or Explana#on of Benefits (EOB) looking for errors or claims for products or services that weren’t received.

• Follow the instruc#ons currently outlined by the CDC, the governor, and your living complex.

• Be prepared to take further ac#on if instructed in response to COVIDͲ19.

Providing

Purposeful Activities When your loved one is no longer able to do the hobbies or ac#vi#es he or she once enjoyed, it can be hard to know how to spend meaningful #me with them. He or she may spend much of their #me staring off, pacing or dozing. How can a caregiver provide meaning and purpose in their loved ones’ life?

When you explore a person’s life story you discover the things that once were meaningful and important to them. Look at what the person’s occupa#on and hobbies were, then consider their current ability level and skills to crea#vely adapt or simplify the ac#vi#es to match their abili#es.

֍ A re#red farmer may no longer drive tractor, but may enjoy visi#ng an implement lot or farm magazines.

֍ What about a plumber? Try giving him different sec#ons of PVC pipes and connectors.

֍ For a housewife who raised a family, give her some canning jars with lids and screw tops or baby clothes

and diapers to hold and sort.

֍ The person who was always building things may enjoy a box of different kinds of wood blocks to feel, sand,

or even smell.

֍ A once avid card player might enjoy playing a simple card game. Or perhaps simply holding the cards.

֍ A past gardener could help plant seeds or use gardening tools to dig in the soil.

The Alzheimer’s Associa#on suggests that successful ac#vi#es should focus on past interests and skills, recall a person’s work related past, s#mulate all 5 senses and be adult in nature. When you find ac#vi#es that help your loved one feel good, both of you will enjoy your #me together much more. The Merry? Month of May • Katherine Schneider

May is Senior Americans month, so I’d like to toast all of us who’ve reached that status, however we define it.

Last year in May I went down to the Capitol in Madison with staff and board members of the ADRC to lobby for senior issues like beHer support for caregivers. I was the senior in the group and they were considerate of meͶstopping whenever my senior aged Seeing Eye dog or I needed to make a pit stop. It was a grand experience gathering with over 300 seniors and advocates from across the state to talk to our legislators.

What a difference a year makes! Now we are Safer at Home, trying to figure out how to meet our basic needs without puUng ourselves or others at risk and how to contribute to the world from home. I’ve got a column “Corona Chronicle: Dispatches from the Sidelines” going at www.cvpost.org the Chippewa Valley museum has a contest for diaries of the experience and the “Hope Is The Thing” Project is a communityͲwide, collabora#ve wri#ng project commiHed to finding the hope in the heartache. Each day throughout the COVIDͲ19 pandemic, Chippewa Valley Writers Guild members (and their friends!) will post a new piece of wri#ng inspired by glimpses of hope observed in this difficult #me. Asking for Help

Everyone needs help from time to time. Sometimes it is just a tough week when lots of little things go wrong. And still other times we simply find we are unable to do all the things we used to do. As a caregiver, the responsibilities can feel purely overwhelming at times. Whatever the case, we all find ourselves in a position where we need a little bit of help.

It can be so hard to ask for help! As a caregiver, we may feel that no one else can really do our job. We may even talk ourselves into thinking we actually don’t need help, but deep down, we know we could use some assistance.

Sometimes you need something tangible like a some groceries or medications delivered, a ride to an appointment, your house cleaned or a meal prepared.

Other times you may just need someone to talk. If you’re not sure what you need, ask a friend, relative or counselor to help you.

It is best to be specific in your request. Sometimes when people offer to help it may catch you off guard and you can’t think of anything you need right at that moment. To remedy this, keep a pencil and paper handy and write down the various things you could use help with as you think of them. Then when people ask, “How can I help you?” you can simply consult your list and give them a specific task.

Writing things down as you think of them helps you remember the things you need and it also allows people to choose something that they feel most comfortable with.

Once you have successfully allowed others to assist you, continue to evaluate your situation. Needs change. You may find that you no longer need what you did before. Or there may be different areas where help is needed. Just make sure you are getting all your needs met so you can be as healthy and happy as possible.

Living Well with Demen-a

For a Time Such as This… Yes, we are in the midst of the Corona Virus which has impacted our daily lives. Social distancing and selfͲisola#on are the new direc#ves to help keep all of us safe. We cannot stop the spread of the virus but we can maintain our peace of mind and spiritual wellͲbeing by praying for protec#on. The most vulnerable are seniors who do not have family or a support system. Those of us who suffer from demen#a can feel even more isolated and withdrawn. How are you coping with all that is going on in the world? For the #me being I have to accept that for right now this is the new normal and find crea#ve ways to alleviate the daily tension and to find some peace of mind.

That said, all of this can be hard to navigate. What can I do for someone? Daily I try to communicate with a friend or family member to help upliN their spirit and let them know how much I care and appreciate their love and friendship. Even when isolated people are only a phone call away. I oNen walk outside when I can or go for rides into the rural areas of the Chippewa Valley where I can appreciate and observe natures beauty. The natural cycles of seasonal change are s#ll occurring all around us without interrup#on. We are all part of this rhythm of life. Being close to the earth gives me gravity, balance and a sense of gra#tude that I am s#ll alive and part of this beau#ful world.

I think there is a silver lining to all of this: I need to priori#ze what is important and meaningful in my life, remembering to slow down and appreciate this very day, this very moment that has been given to me, knowing that tomorrow is not promised and that the future is beyond my control. Love and hope is all that we have. Go outside, enjoy the sunshine and listen to the birds sing their songs of joy. Rest assured ‘This too shall pass’!

Tax Filing Deadline Extended to July 15

Both federal and Wisconsin income tax filing and payment due dates have been automatically extended to July 15, 2020. Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms to qualify for this tax filing and payment relief.

Payment can be deferred until July 15, 2020, regardless of the amount owed. This deferment applies to all taxpayers, including individuals, trusts and estates, corporations and other associations, as well as those who pay selfͲemployment tax. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) encourages taxpayers who are owed a refund to file as soon as possible. Federal tax refunds are still being issued within 21 days.

In addition, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) is still processing returns and issuing refunds and other credits, including the Homestead Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The IRS encourages anyone who hasn't filed a tax return for 2019, 2018, or a previous year to act now. Congress recently passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which includes certain tax credits and rebates for those who filed a return for 2019 and/or 2018. The IRS will use the information on the Form SSAͲ1099 or Form RRBͲ1099 to generate Economic Impact.

Payments to recipients of benefits reflected in the Form SSAͲ1099 or Form RRBͲ1099 who are not required to file a tax return and did not file a return for 2018 or 2019. This includes individuals who receive Social Security Retirement or Social Security Disability Insurance benefits and railroad retirees who are not otherwise required to file a tax return.

The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly changed the way we do things. While not all prevention and health promotion workshops can be delivered via remote technology, the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County is working with program developers and State license holders of evidence-based programs to pilot learning and connectivity via teleconferencing.

Healthy Living with Diabetes Is a sixͲweek workshop that meets once per week for 2 hours, plus a 7th session with a Cer#ďŹ ed Diabetes Educator.

Ways to Stay Ac-ve and Safe During the Coronavirus Pandemic

We may not be able to offer in person group exercise classes during the COVIDͲ19 outbreak, but it is important that we stay ac#ve and maintain gains in strength, balance, and flexibility that reduce fall risk, strengthen the immune system, and improve quality of life. You may be concerned about your safety exercising at home, but research has shown that the risks of exercise at home are no greater than exercising in a group seUng. Here are some #ps and resources to help.

Be ac#ve! If you are already engaging in outbreakͲappropriate physical ac#vity by maintaining social distance, keep it up! Exercise is key to healthy aging. It’s important to keep exercising to strengthen their immune systems and maintain fitness. The Na#onal Physical Ac#vity Guidelines recommends engaging in 150 minutes of moderateͲintensity physical ac#vity a week.

Sit Less. Move More. Get up during every commercial on TV and do an ac#ve chore or march in place. If possible, taking a walk outside is a great way to stay ac#ve and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunshine.

Move Your Way. If you are too busy for exercise, you can get things done and stay physically ac#ve at the same #me. Physical ac#vity isn’t a chore if you make chores physical ac#vity! Prac#ce all 4 types of exercise: endurance so you can climb steps or dance the night away, strength so you can liN groceries or carry grandchildren, balance so you can prevent falls and related injuries, and flexibility so you can drive or get dressed.

Stay Safe during exercise: Exercising at home, with appropriate exercises and guidance, is generally safe and healthy. Reminders to help you stay safe: R Listen to your body. Always warm up before exercising and cool down aNerward. Gauge your level of effort with the “talk test”. You should be exercising at a level that allows you to talk, but not sing.

R Be aware of your environment. Make sure you are in reach of a counter, back of a couch, or a sturdy chair that is pushed up against a wall in case you lose your balance and need to hold on to something. It may also be helpful to put a chair/couch behind you in case you need to sit or lose your balance.

R Hydrate. Drink water before, during, and aNer exercising, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Choose shoes that are made for the type of ac#vity you want to do, and choose clothes that work with your ac#vity and the temperature of your environment.

Stay Mo#vated! Exercise is good for almost everyone, yet it is hard to fit exercise into our daily life. These #ps can help older adults overcome common barriers to exercise and get moving to improve your health. There is NO vaccine. x Beware of anyone contac#ng you through email, text, phone call or other form of communica#on claiming a cash payment or government benefit or other COVIDͲ19 related offer. x Beware of anyone calling, tex#ng, emailing, etc. telling you that your FoodShare benefit will end, or that you can get more. x Beware of anyone calling, tex#ng, emailing, etc. saying you can get high demand products like cleaning supplies, gloves, masks, sani#zers by ordering online or over the phone. x Beware of COVID charity scams. If you want to contribute to the effort contact your local church, school, nonͲprofit agency or some other local agency you trust. x Beware of someone claiming to be a rela#ve or friend that is unable to get home due to travel bans and asking for money. This is the same scam with a COVID twist.

Stay Healthy and Stop the Spread of Illness

Preven#ng disease and staying healthy is a top priority for most Medicare beneficiaries. Over the past weeks the news headlines have been filled with reports about the novel coronavirus (COVIDͲ19). It’s important to know the facts, stay calm, and take precau#ons.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preven#on (CDC), some people are at higher risk for geUng very sick from this illness. This includes older adults and people who have serious chronic medical condi#ons like heart disease, Diabetes, and lung disease. As people age, their immune system changes, making it harder to fight off diseases and infec#on.

Underlying health condi#ons can also make it more difficult to cope with and recover from illness.

That’s why the CDC is recommending that people who are at higher risk take the following steps:

x Make sure you have access to several weeks of medica#ons, food, and supplies in case you need to stay home for prolonged periods of #me. x Stay at home as much as possible to avoid expo sure to people who are sick. x When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact, and wash your hands oNen. x Avoid crowds x Stay up to date on CDC Travel Health No#ces.

The CDC urges individuals to stay calm and follow these commonͲsense #ps: x Wash your hands oNen with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before ea#ng; aNer going to the bathroom; and aNer blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. x Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. x Stay home when you are sick. x Cover your cough or sneeze with a #ssue, then throw the #ssue in the trash.

If you have Medicare, you may be wondering about Medicare coverage of your needs related to COVIDͲ19. Here are a few important points to note: Medicare covers the lab tests for COVIDͲ19 and you pay no outͲofͲpocket costs. Medicare covers all medically necessary hospitaliza#ons.

At this #me, there is no vaccine for COVIDͲ19.

However, if a vaccine becomes available, it will be covered by all Medicare Part D plans.
