Discussing retirement from driving with the person you are (or will be) caring for is not an easy conversation; however, doing it while the person still drives, can make the transition from driver to rider much easier.

There is usually not a specific day when you know it is time to stop driving. Decisions should be based on driving behavior over a period of time, not just a single incident.

Complete a driving assessment, or discuss with a physician – to help determine the balance between a person’s desire to drive with the need for safety.

ADRC Adaptive Equipment Loan Program This device is unique in amplifying sounds for the consumer while reducing background noise. It is ideal for one-on-one conversations, small groups, and TV or radio listening. It can also be used with or without a hearing aid. All that you have to do is simply plug in your headphones, position the microphone near the preferred sound, adjust volume to your comfort, and start listening!

Do you or a loved one have a hard time hearing? If so, consider checking out this Pocket Talker at the ADRC loan closet!

Whether you are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, or are needing something for a short period of time, the loan program can be a useful service. All adaptive equipment items can be borrowed for up to three months for a small contribution fee. See staff in case of financial hardship.

Nutri on Nibbles As we age, healthy ea ng can make a difference in our health. For 2019 Nutri on Nibbles, we will include a “Nutri on Myth” or “Whole Grain” of the month, as well as an ar cle related to a nutri onal topic.

Arthri s Awareness There are many types of arthri s with different symptoms; however, most forms have common symptoms which include joint pain, s ffness, swelling, and decreased range of mo on. Your diet can help decrease these symptoms.

Below are some ideas on food to help:

An Ͳinflammatory fa y acids: Also known as omegaͲ3 fa#y acids. Best sources include salmon, tuna, sardines, herring, anchovies, scallops, coldͲwater fish.

Nuts and seeds: A handful serving of walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, and almonds, as well as ground flax seeds and chia seeds are good sources of omegaͲ3’s.

Fruits & vegetables: It is recommended to get about 9 servings per day. A serving of fruits and vegetables is about ½ to 1 cup. Use olive oil while cooking or add it to a salad to have a variety and mix it up!

Fiber: Increase your intake of beans each week, as well as switch to

whole grains, which provide a good source of fiber.

Some fiber filled wholeͲgrain op ons are oatmeal, brown rice, ferro, barley and quinoa.

Arthri s and Inflamma on Osteoarthri s involves the degenera on of car lage in joints and bones which causes severe inflamma on and possibly further damage. Inflamma on is a natural response of a healthy immune system that is most commonly associated with injury and illness. However, chronic inflamma on is much harder to recognize and over me can cause damage to ssues.

Some foods that help with inflamma on: Blueberries and chia seeds can help as well as the spice, Turmeric.

Turmeric contains the chemical curcumin, which has been shown to decrease swelling. Because of this, turmeric might be beneficial for trea ng condi ons that involve inflamma on.

What foods cause inflamma on?

Foods high in starches, sugar, and saturated/transͲfats. These foods are o6en highly processed, like sugary snacks and fried

foods.

Reducing the consump on of sugar, processed grains, candy, fa#y meat, and sweetened beverages can help to reduce inflamma on caused by dietary intake.

Monthly Challenge ideas: √ Swap fatty or processed meats for 3 to 4 ounces of fish like salmon or tuna. √ Have fruit and veggies at each meal √ Eat a handful of nuts like wal nuts or pistachios daily √ Try turmeric in a recipe or sprinkle on meats or potatoes Source: GWAAR Nutrition Team in Collaboration with UW Stout Dietetic Student Dana Lemke 5-1-18 and Emily Parsons.

Senior dining meal sites provide a healthy lunch to those over the age of 60. It also benefits the individual and community!

Myth: Sea salt is healthier than regular salt Fact: Often marketed as a healthier alternative to regular table salt, compositionally they are almost the same.

A teaspoon of table salt contains 2200 mgs of sodium compared to 2000 mgs in sea salt, Sea salt does contain a trace amount calcium, potassium, and magnesium, We should strive to minimize our sodium intake.

Memorial Day , Once Called Decoration Day

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans Ͷ the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Ͷ established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourningͲdraped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies.

After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May.

Today, cities in the North and the South claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1866.

Approximately 25 places have been named in connection with the origin of Memorial Day, many of them in the South where most of the war dead were buried.

Later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. A ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at halfͲstaff.

If you cannot make a parade or gathering, honor our fallen veterans in your thoughts. Take part in the national moment of remembrance on Memorial Day and pause for a minute of silence at 3 pm. Employee Spotlight • Carmelita Hogan I started as a volunteer at St. John’s Senior Dining, and then was hired as the part time Meal Site Worker. It’s a fun and challenging position. Recently I started as a limited-term Administrative Associate at the ADRC helping with the front desk and as well as a Meal Site Worker and enjoy both jobs. I enjoy helping people and am a customer service person. I like to communicate with people, so I can understand their needs and be able to assist them in any way. In customer service, I always believe a little smile goes a long way to people having a bad day.

I grew up in the Philippines and was determined to be a good worker and find a better life in America.

I was employed by the US Postal Service as a mail sorter, and mail carrier at the Bloomer Post Office. I then transferred to the Eau Claire Post Office as Bulk Mail Clerk and Retail Clerk and retired after 30 years to pursue a different challenge and worked as a bank teller.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love the outdoors, planting flowers and watching football. My husband and I have one daughter attending UW-Eau Claire.

Where Do You Store YOUR Medica ons?

Do you have any prescrip<on painkillers? Do you know the quan<ty? Would you be able to tell if any of your pills were missing? These ques<ons are asked in order to increase awareness of the need to ensure safe use and safe storage to prevent prescrip<on misuse. Make sure you regularly monitor your medica<ons and know the quan<<es; you may be innocently contribu<ng to abuse. Nearly 1 out of 4 Eau Claire County teens say it is easy to get prescrip<on medica<on from their home/grandparent’s home or friend’s house without permission.
