Men as Caregivers Women still outnumber men as caregivers, but the number of men caring for an older adult has doubled in the past 15 years. Why is this happening? We can thank smaller family sizes and skyrocketing diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (which affects women more than men).

According to the International Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, services are often not designed to reach out to male clients and men may see “seeking out services” as admitting personal weakness. Based on focus groups convened around the country, AARP reports that men tend to be more uncomfortable with hands-on personal care and less likely to open up to others and ask for help.

To accommodate the growing number of men caring for a loved one with dementia, the Aging & Disability Resource Center created a space for men to feel comfortable and reached out to family caregiver Bob Vogler to facilitate a men’s coffee group. The group meets the 2nd & 4th Wednesday each month, 7:00 am & 11:00 am at Peace Lutheran Church. Upcoming groups are March 13, 2019, 7:00 am and March 27, 2019, 11:00 am.

All men are welcome and enjoy coffee and refreshments, camaraderie, and as Bob states, “a safe place to blow off steam.” For more information, contact Bob at 414-378-2114 or rvogler1@att.net.

Employee Spotlight x Michelle Fellom

If you have visited the ADRC any me within the past year and a half, chances are that we may have already met.

My name is Michelle Fellom, and I started at the ADRC as a limited term Administra ve Associate in August 2017. I have recently been hired on as a fullͲ me staff member helping at the front desk and with the Meals on Wheels program. The ADRC is a wonderful resource for our community, and I am grateful to be able to do my part to help those get the help that they need.

I have worked in several different capaci es as an elementary school teacher, French teacher, Homework Helpline teacher, and manager at a local senior apartment complex, just to name a few. I truly enjoy my work here at the ADRC. Working at the front desk and with the MOW program is always varied and fastͲpaced. I not only have the opportunity to meet and help people from the community, but I have the privilege to work with a wonderful and caring staff. Since last spring, the ADRC is also the recep on area for the Vet’s Service Office and being able to meet and help our local veterans has also been very rewarding.

When not at work, I enjoy spending me with family and friends. My husband and I have three grown children: a son in Woodbury, a daughter in Madison, and our youngest who a3ends UWͲStout. I grew up in the Eau Claire area so am fortunate to spend me with my parents, aunts, cousins, and grandmother who live nearby. I enjoy gardening and have a vegetable and bu3erfly garden. Last summer, my mother and I helped raise and release about 200 monarch bu3erflies.

When not at home with family and friends, I love learning about other cultures and have had the opportunity to study in France and travel in Europe.

Our family has enjoyed hos ng interna onal exchange students throughout the years as well.

ª ª¥ ¡¤¥­ ~¨ ¢¢ ¤ New Director of Veteran Services For Eau Claire County Eric Killen grew up in the city of Altoona and graduated from UW-Eau Claire before he spent 31 years as a fulltime officer in the Army and Army National Guard. He served in Iraq in 2004-05 and spent two tours in East Africa in 2010 and 2015, ultimately rising to the rank of Colonel.

Upon his retirement from the Army, Killen transferred his leadership skills to a job with the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Rice Lake as the Director of Academic Support. His love for education and learning made the position a natural fit.

However, Killen could not pass up the opportunity to engage his other passion – helping his “brothers” and “sisters” who served our country.

This past January, he was formally appointed as the County’s Director of Veteran Services. Killen came to the helm of an organization that is already boasting an impressive performance. The office has been recognized in the past years as one of the most productive veteran service offices in the state based on the number of veterans served, disability claims processed, and educational benefits applications submitted. Excited by the possibilities to provide service to our military, veterans and dependents, and survivors, and help them receive the benefits that they are entitled to, Killen looks forward to increasing the outreach of the office and bringing innovative new programming.

The legacy of service to the Army continues to live on in Killen’s family.

Winter Weather & Meals on Wheels: When Eau Claire Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Meals on Wheels delivery and Senior Dining will also be closed. Please watch local TV stations or listen to WAXX radio for a listing of closings for that day. Closing announcement will be run along with the school closings at the bottom of the TV screen. If you receive Meals on Wheels please arrange for your sidewalks, steps, entryways and driveways be cleared of snow and ice to ensure the safety of delivery volunteers.

13 Reuben Potato Skins 8 (3 inch long) russet potatoes scrubbed 2 Tablespoons butter 8 oz sliced corned beef 1/3 cup Thousand Island dressing 1 cup sauerkraut drained 1 ½ cup shredded swiss cheese (4 oz) Pierce and bake potato directly on oven rack until knife easily pierces the potato and skins are crisp. Slice each potato in half lengthwise and scoop out the flesh, leaving about ¼ inch intact.

Brush insides of the potato with melted butter and season with salt and pepper.

Divide the corned beef evenly among the skins and top with about 1 teaspoon of dressing. Evenly divide the sauerkraut among the skins and sprinkle each with cheese. Place in the broiler until the corned beef is heated through and cheese is melted, approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Serve immediately.

St. Patrick’s Day Food Ideas that are dye free: add a little blended spinach to any pancake mix and use heart shape cookie cutters to make a shamrock, add avocado to your deviled eggs, try adding some green peas to your hummus, add some pesto to your pasta.

Guide to Frozen Produce: Check the label, look for frozen produce that has only one thing on the ingredient list. If you are buying frozen produce with sauce look for low sugar and low sodium op;ons.

Guide to Frozen Entrees: Look for products that are low in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. Be sure to check the serving size when you compare.

Limit foods that are breaded.

Choose products you can cook in the oven, stovetop, or microwave instead of frying.

Buy frozen meals that include lots of veggies and protein.

Fact Red meat is not bad for you, but choose leaner cuts of beef and pork.

For beef, choose eye of round, top round roast, top sirloin and flank, For pork, choose tenderloin and loin chops. Poultry can contain more saturated fat than lean meats depending on prepara;on.

Baked Meatballs

1 pound lean ground beef ½ cup onion, finely chopped ½ cup bread crumbs 1 clove garlic-minced 1 egg (beaten) 3 tbsp ketchup 1 tbsp Worcestershire 1 tsp salt (optional) or salt-free seasoning 1 tsp pepper ½ tbsp dried parsley Preheat the oven to 400F. Spray a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Mix together onion, breadcrumbs, garlic, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, pepper, salt and parsley in large mixing bowl.

Add in ground beef and mix gently until combined. Form into 1-inch balls. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until brown and cooked through.

Enjoy with a salad or mix it in with spaghetti or enjoy on a sandwich. Variations: Add shredded carrots, diced green pepper, shredded cheese, etc.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center’s loan closet has adap;ve equipment to assist those who have difficulty dressing independently. Check out some of the dressing aids below that are available in the ADRC loan closet.

A sock aid is a device that assists with puRng on socks without having to bend over. EasyͲtoͲgrip, soG foam handles and is ideal for people with limited hand func;ons, back problems, wheelchair users, or people recovering from hip or knee surgery. Slide sock over device and use foam handles on the long cords to pull the sock onto the foot.

Dressing hooks are designed to help with puRng on shirts, pulling up pants or skirts, or removing socks and shoes.

A bu6on aid is great for those who have arthri;s or limited use of fingers and hands. SoG, rubber grip with a formed wire at the end pulls bu6ons easily through the bu6on hole.

Doff N' Donner is a soG device that allows you to quickly guide a compression sock or stocking up and down your leg or arm, making it easier to don and remove all styles of graduated compression stockings.

The adap;ve equipment loan program offers a way to try out equipment for a short period of ;me. Whether you are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, or needing something for a short amount of ;me, the loan program can be a useful service.

Recognize Caregiver Burnout

Providing care for an aging or disabled loved one might be one of the hardest jobs you will ever do. Assisting with daily cares such as dressing, grooming and bathing is physically challenging. You may not always recognize the signs of burnout in yourself, but those close to you probably will. Once you have recognized that you are experiencing burnout you can try various things to help you cope. Here are some suggestions: ॺ Participate in a support network. Find family and friends whom you can share joys and frustrations with. ॺ Consult with a professional counselor for one-on-one counseling. ॺ Attend a support group to receive positive feedback and coping strategies from others in similar situations. ॺ Maintain good health by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. ॺ Take regular time out for journaling, meditating or contemplation. ॺ Stay involved in hobbies and activities you enjoy.

Thousands of reports about people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) who are trying to get your Social Security number and even your money.

In one version of the scam, the caller says your Social Security number has been linked to a crime (often, happened in Texas) involving drugs or sending money out of the country illegally.

Plastic Codes and Recyclability Why is it that plastics have those little numbers on them but not all of them can be recycled?

So, what does that number mean? It is a packaging industry code that indicates what kind of plastic it is.

Number 2 means that it’s high density polyethylene (HDPE). Number 3 is polyvinyl chloride, more commonly known as PVC. Check out the graphic for details on each plastic type, and whether you can recycle it. Notice that for some plastic codes, only certain items within that code are accepted in your recycling bin. Containers are generally good to put in your recycling bin, but plastic bags and other films need to be taken to a drop site.
