Loneliness and social isola on for older adults can have a deep emo onal impact, some mes leading depression and anxiety.

Loneliness can also impact physical health. Below are a variety of resources to help maintain connec ons and reduce eects of social isola on and loneliness.

• Senior Planet Ͳ Learn how to connect online. Senior Planet oers simple instruc onal videos that include, “How to Get Online,â€? “Zoom Video Instruc ons,â€? and “Device Recommenda ons (discussion about various tools such as smart phones, tablets, and laptops).â€? If you need phone support to get connected, you can also call the Senior Planet Hotline at 1Ͳ920Ͳ666Ͳ1959. Once connected, Senior Planet oers a wide variety of free online events, open to anyone 60 and older. You join by clicking on the event, then clicking on the link to join a live video presenta on at the scheduled me. 2020 Senior Farmers Market Vouchers

The Aging and Disability Resource Center will begin distribu ng a limited supply of Senior Farmers Market vouchers. Eligible seniors can receive $25 in vouchers to be used at any approved Farmers Market vendor in the state of Wisconsin. The vouchers can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Wisconsin.

Only one $25 voucher packet per household.

To be eligible to receive the vouchers in Eau Claire County you must be:

Forms must be completed, signed, and returned to our office before we can mail your vouchers. You will receive a postage paid envelope to return the form to us for your convenience. The earliest vouchers can be mailed is June 1st.

Vouchers will NOT be available for pick up at The ADRC office.

Strong Bodies

A 10 week program designed to help older adults become and stay strong.

Each class includes warmͲup, progressive weight training, balance, and flexibility exercises. Minimal equipment needed: set of dumbbells, ankle weight & floor mat or towel.

All new par cipants must complete forms at an Informa on Session before par cipa ng in classes. Class size is limited. Registra on is required one week prior to the start of all classesͶ no excep ons.

The Nostalgia of Summer me

During this diďŹƒcult -me, I am looking forward to the long, warm, sunny days of summer. It is a -me of fullness and comple-on, the goal of all that has gone before. It is a -me for building strength and storing energy for whatever may come in the future. It is also a -me of great joy. “This is the essence of summerͲ a -me of plenty and a soF green beauty in which hardships, survival, and eternal striving belong to a dierent and almost forgoGen -meâ€?. The quote is from Sigurd Olson, the great Minnesota naturalist who ďŹ Fy years later captures the -me in which we now ďŹ nd ourselves.

Who knows what our future will look like, but one thing is for sure‌the cycles of nature will never change, and knowing that I am part of this circle of life gives me strength to navigate the river of change. Having been diagnosed with demen-a has helped me in certain ways to prepare for this unwanted ‘new normal’. Learning to be s-ll and know, slow down, priori-ze and to prac-ce personnel safety. All of the fear mongering by the media, direc-ves to prac-ce selfͲisola-on and social distancing trigger a great deal of mental anxiety and stress. The one thing I can do is to pray for protec-on. Daily I ask God to grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the dierence. Acceptance is the only ra-onal answer that comes to mind. I cannot stop the spread of this pes-lence but I can strive to have a reasonably happy life, a life lived simply, lived meaningfully, and lived well, not dwelling on what I have mentally lost but always grateful for what I have leF. The nostalgia of summer always brings a longing to return to simpler days that are now fading from my memory. It is an ache in my heart for what is unrecoverable. I believe that the warm glow of sen-mentality for the past my counteract my anxiety and loneliness. Indulge yourself! Please stay safe and healthy!

Jim is the author of Other Me’s, a personal account of how he and his family dealt with the eects of Lewy Body Demen a with Parkinson’s Disease during the last two year of his wife Diane’s life. Using reec on daily journals and memory care facility notes, Jim chronicles the progression of Diane’s physical and mental symptoms, including Capgras Syndrome, which caused Diane to believe there were mul ple versions of her husband of 52 years, including several malevolent imposters.

Third Quarter Musings

By Katherine Schneider Re red Clinical Psychologist and County Board member Recently I got up in a foul humor for no apparent reason. Then I read an ar cle that said we’re entering the third quarter of responding to isola on and I understood what was going on. Based on studies of submariners and people who spend a year in Antarc ca, people get growly and act wild during the third quarter of this kind of an isola ng deployment. We’re not at the end of the pandemic, but we’re star ng to see some places open up and others not. Some of us because of age and other factors may need to keep isola ng even when others are more out and about. Jealousy joins the mix of feelings!

Tips from a fellow pilgrim on the pandemic journey: x Monitor your moods like you would your temperature. Then they don’t jump out and surprise you. x Keep your rou ne going or start one, so you can look back on the day and say “I did this and this.” x Treat yourself to a liFle luxury every day, whether it’s listening to a favorite song or a cup of tea. x If you need to feel sorry for yourself, go ahead. BeFer to let it happen than try to talk yourself out of it and have it come out anyway. x If you can get outside, do so. VEHICLE MODIFICATION GRANT UPDATE New Eligibility Requirements

Are you in need of modifying your vehicle for handicap accessibility and safety reasons? Are the costs just too high? The ADRC is happy to announce there is now a grant available for individuals in need of vehicle modifica on up to $5,000.

Eligible applicants must be elderly (60+ years), an adult with a permanent disability and/or a caregiver to someone elderly and/ or an adult with a permanent disability, and an Eau Claire County resident. Applica ons will be reviewed and granted based on funding availability.

If you take medica on, you know that a large part of your budget can quickly be consumed by these costs.

Insurance coverage can be hard to understand and ďŹ nding assistance programs to help with your costs can be even more diďŹƒcult. Even if you ďŹ nd yourself without insurance, there may be help available.

Elder and Disability BeneďŹ t Specialists from the Aging and Disability Resource Center are here to help you discover your op ons! Some assistance programs available include:

Medicaid Í´ State program based on income and some mes asset limits Extra Help Í´ Federal program based on income and asset limits. Eligible individuals may qualify for a low cost Part D plan with reduced copays.

Pharmaceu cal Assistance Programs (PAPs)Í´ drug manufacturer program based on income.

Medicare beneďŹ ciaries whose income is too high for extra help, but s ll within program guidelines may be eligible, as well as those without insurance. There are quite a few PAPs for brand name medica ons. For example: NovoNordisk, makers of Novolog, Tresiba, Victoza and more, will send this medica on free of charge for the remainder of this year, to qualiďŹ ed individuals.

Certain things like wheeled walkers can be paid for with your insurance if your doctor writes a prescrip on that it is medically necessarily.

Beneficial Bites: Blackberry Bliss

I don’ t know about you, but nothing screams summer to me more than a fresh fruit salad with a pile of sweet, purple blackberries included! However, the good news is you can find them in the grocery store all year long.

Known as Rubus fru cosus, and coming from thorny buses called brambles, this berry falls into the same family as raspberries and dewberries, making them sweet and succulent.

The list of health benefits of blackberries is extensive. Not only are they loaded with Vitamin C, but they are an excellent source of fiber. 100g (3.5 oz) of blackberries is 5.3 grams of fiber ʹ good for the heart, brain and bowels. They are also rich in vitamins A, E, K, and B as well as the eye health an oxidants ʹ lutein and zeaxanthin.

These sweet and tart berries can be easily stored. They will last in the freezer for several months a[er you properly wash them, cut out the hulls and vacuum seal in a bag. Blackberries make great addi ons to salads or smoothies. They also make a great topping for your yogurt or even blended into a savory sauce for meat or fish recipes.

Internet and Phone Helpline (608Ͳ267Ͳ3595 / Monday through Friday from 7:45 am ʹ 4:30 pm): A helpline for people who need help loca ng phone or internet service, a Consumer Affairs staff person will walk through internet and phone service op ons, share any discount informa on, and provide informa on about Lifeline eligibility and enrollment.

Emergency Internet Resources Website (h>ps://psc.wi.gov/Pages/ Programs BroadbandEmergencyInternetResources.aspx): Many internet service providers are offering lowͲcost, discounted, and free access op ons in response to the COVIDͲ19 health emergency. The geography served, eligibility for offers, type of discount, and length of me varies. This website compiles the informa on the Commission currently has.

Open WiͲFi tool for DriveͲUp Internet (h>ps://maps.psc.wi.gov/ apps/PublicWiFiLoca ons/): An online tool that can assist users in finding freeͲtoͲuse public broadband loca ons in their area.
