The Longest Day

5.8 million Americans are estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia and the numbers are expected to triple by 2050. In an effort to bring more recognition to the disease, it is crucial to increase awareness now.

In an attempt to bring more recognition to the disease the Alzheimer’s Association chose the summer solstice – the longest day of the year, June 21, to be the day of a sunrise-tosunset relay event to support those facing the disease.

People across the world will be participating in a fundraising activity.

The Alzheimer’s Association recommends five steps to get started: • Do what you love to raise awareness – like cooking, gardening or walking • Grab your friends and form a team • Remember to plan your day with your team, whether it’s raising awareness together or digitally, if in different locations • Then raise money doing what you love to support Alzheimer’s on the Longest Day x Remember to celebrate at sunset with your team and recognize the accomplishments you made towards bringing awareness to Alzheimer’s For more information on how to register for the event, visit their website at www.alz.org.

Over 3,300 pounds of unused or expired medication collected!

Eau Claire County collected over 3,300 pounds of unused or expired medication during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day! Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to abuse.

70% of people abusing prescription painkillers get them through friends or relatives. Make sure you’re storing your prescriptions out of sight, and if you have the ability, locked up. Safely disposing of unwanted medication is crucial for abuse prevention, and it’s easy to find a drop off spot in your community. Don’t flush them or toss in your garbage.

These substances can contaminate our water supply.

5 A message from the ADRC Board Chair, Katherine Schneider:

In May, the ADRC Board held its yearly elec-on for chair and vice chair; I ran for Chair and Sue Miller (on the County Board) ran for Vice Chair, and we were both reͲelected. My plaDorm was Tehabi/interdependence.

Tehabi is a Hopi Katchina doll of a blind man carrying a mobilityͲimpaired man (pictured here). These story dolls have been around for hundreds of years and are a way to pass along culture in the Hopi world. The story of this one is: “You see for me; I’ll walk for you.” For those of us with disabili-es, this interdependence is a daily thing. For example, for me to serve as Chair I need to have documents electronically ahead of -me so I can read them with my screen reader. When we start the mee-ngs, everyone goes around with their name so I know who’s si4ng where. If someone sneaks in late, if nobody tells me, I don’t know they’re there. And I rely on fellow board members to give me rides to and from mee-ngs. Then of course I rely on my Vice Chair, especially to help keep me opera-ng according to Robert’s Rules of Order. Then there’s the friendly advice from ADRC staff about what kind of cookies are on the table, if any!

I’ll bet you can think of examples of interdependence in your life. It does make our world so much beLer than trying to go it alone. That’s my plaDorm anyway!

2019 Senior Farmers Market Vouchers

The Aging & Disability Resource Center will distribute a limited supply of Senior Farmer’s Market vouchers at local Farmer’s Markets. Vouchers will NOT be available at the ADRC office, unless there are any remaining a+er the distribu,on dates below.

Eligible seniors receive one $25 in vouchers per household for any approved Farmer’s Market vendor in the state of Wisconsin, to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Wisconsin.

June is National Dairy Month Foods that contain dairy are a great source of many nutrients, like calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein. Not all types of milk contain the same amount of protein content.

Adults greater than 50 years old should be consuming 1,200mg of calcium daily. It is recommended to consume at least 3 servings of dairy per day. Older adults need to consume 400mg of calcium at each meal to meet recommendations.

Calcium does come from other foods besides dairy such as kale, almonds, broccoli, figs, tofu and sesame seeds.

Friday Facts…Opening Pathways to Better Brain Health The first of the four-month series of Friday Facts was a huge hit with 110 people in attendance at Dove Healthcare – West Eau Claire!

Every other Friday, May 3 – August 23, 2019, 10:00 – 11:30 am, will be filled with people eager to learn the latest research and updates on keeping our brains healthy.

On June 14th, come and learn about the effects of concussions on brain health, and hear from Jeanne Brown from the Oakleaf Concussion Clinic.

By Russell Martoccio I'm very grateful summer is on its way. So far a sluggish start with cool temperatures, cloudy days and rain but small leaves, flower buds and pussy willows are popping out all over. To appreciate the season, you must wait for it.

The earth is awake at last aYer a long winter's sleep and within it is a quickening. AYer half a year of frozen silence, it is a miracle of rebirth, a -me of rare beauty and promise.

In my quest to manage my condi-on of demen-a, I find that summer in many ways can be a morale booster, especially aYer a long Northern Wisconsin winter. Planning my garden for plan-ng, -lling the soil and fer-lizing are some of my many enjoyments, however my real joy is the return of baseball! "The Boys of Summer" are back in ac-on. The smell of the fresh cut grass, the roar of the crowd, the perfect symmetry of the diamond, and of course having a dog at the game bring back fond memories of my childhood growing up in Chicago.

I was born a Cubs fan and would oYen take the bus to the great cathedral of baseball Ͳ Wrigley Field. I grew to iden-fy with the Loveable Losers, watching with great an-cipa-on while we started our aggressive march toward fu-lity while having our bad days and good days. We just wanted to be average. One ethic I took away is that you have a job to do. Get up for the game, play hard, be a good teammate and do the best you can. We understood that winning the World Series and having parades are not for us, even though the baseball gods did smile on us aYer 108 years, my ra-onal being that anyone can have a bad century.

Persistence pays off, living one day at a -me, being suppor-ve and encouraging to my fellow demen-a peers and not living my diagnosis but managing it with wellͲ informed coaching. Being a Cubs fan prepared me for life… knowing the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. In closing I want to emphasize that my spiritual development makes more sense and is of more value than ever before.

Once again learning that winning and losing are equal giYs. Strength from weakness.

Caring for People Who Have Hurt Us For many caregivers, providing care for a loved one is something they want to do. Others feel obligated to take on the role because they value family/friendship ties profoundly and see the duty as theirs. Some caregivers struggle with difficult care recipient behaviors in the present, although the relationship history had been a good one. Yet other caregivers are “drafted” into the role and feel they have no choice but to care for an individual who has abused them.

When an abused child ends up caring for their elderly parent, there is much greater caregiver burden and stress. There is also a danger that the reversal could result in abuse of the elder by the (now adult) child.

In general, caregiver support comes in one of two forms: emotion-focused coping strategies and solution-focused coping strategies.

Emotion-focused coping helps you to become less emotionally reactive to caregiving stressors or it helps change the way you experience them.

One example is living in the present so you can separate past behaviors from disease-related symptoms (your mom who tended to criticize in the past is not purposely trying to harass you when she repeats things due to her memory loss). Another is finding a new way to frame your caregiving. Perhaps you will focus on your value to care for your elders rather than question the particular relationship.

Solution-focused strategies are an alternative.

It may involve providing a significant break from caregiving, like respite care so the caregiver can take a weekend away from everything.

The National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP) allows for these coping strategies in the form of grants for respite. Contact the Aging & Disability Resource Center for more information, 715-839-4735.

ADRC Adap ve Equipment Loan Program Movement is essen-al to improving health; however, this can be challenging when you have a physical disability or temporary loss of mobility. The Eau Claire Aging and Disability Resource Center offers items to assist with mobility through the Adap-ve Equipment Loan Program.

Improving mobility can increase stability, posture, and independence. Even a small amount of movement can have a great impact on one’s health and wellͲbeing. Items in our loan closet that can help improve mobility include twoͲwheeled and fourͲwheeled walkers, knee walkers and scooters, transfer and regular wheelchairs, canes, walking s-cks, hemiͲwalkers, and crutches.

All items can be borrowed for up to three months. A small suggested dona-on of $10 is requested for these items.

Benefits for un-remarried surviving spouses are available under both the Compensation and Pension programs. The definition of surviving spouse for VA purposes is a person who had a valid marriage to the veteran and who was the spouse of the veteran at the time of the veteran’s death; lived with the veteran continuously from the date of marriage to the date of the veteran’s death except where there was a separation which was due to the misconduct of, or procured by, the veteran without the fault of the spouse; and has generally not remarried or has not since the death of the veteran and after September 19, 1962, lived with another person and held himself or herself out openly to the public to be the spouse of such other person.

(38 C.F.R. §3.50).

Compensation for surviving spouses of Veterans is called Dependency Indemnity Compensation or DIC for short. There are two kinds of DIC benefits. x

Death DIC is a monthly payment made by the VA to a surviving spouse, child, or parent of a Veteran because of a serviceconnected death occurring after December 31, 1956; or pursuant to the election of a surviving spouse, child, or parent, in the case of such a death occurring before January 1, 1957. (38 U.S.C. § 101(14)).

Disability DIC is a monthly payment made even though the Veteran died of non-service-connected causes, VA will pay death benefits to the surviving spouse or children in the same manner as if the veteran’s death were service-connected, if the veteran’s death was not the result of his or her own willful mis conduct and at the time of death, the veteran was receiving, or was entitled to receive, compensation for service-connected disability that was rated by VA as totally disabling (100%) for a continuous period of at least 10 years immediately preceding death. The VA will also award an additional stipend if the widow was married to the Veteran for at least 8 of the10 years. (38 U.S.C. § 1318).

Pension for surviving spouses of wartime Veterans is called “Improved Death Pension.” Death Pension is a monthly benefit paid by VA to a Veteran’s surviving spouse or dependent child because of the Veteran’s nonservice-connected death. Basic entitlement to Death Pension exists if: the veteran had qualifying wartime military service; or the Veteran was, at time of death, receiving or entitled to receive compensation or retired pay for a service-connected disability based on service during a period of war; and the surviving spouse or dependent child meets the same net worth and annual income requirements as a Veteran.

Employee Spotlight • Linda Vogler

I have been with the Meals on Wheels Program at the Fall Creek Kitchen since November 2017. Prior to that I spent almost 43 years at Sacred Heart Hospital Kitchen cooking, baking, catering, supervision and department manager, for 35+ of those years providing food for the Meals on Wheels program. A task that my team and I took on with pride.

When my career ended, I found myself missing the food service industry and was glad to join the Fall Creek kitchen team.

My primary duty at the Fall Creek Kitchen is baking. The most challenging thing is making over 1,200 homemade desserts in 15-16 hours a week, along with other duties. I work with 3 amazing staff and we all take great pride in preparing quality, homemade meals. On my days off I love spending time with my husband, John, of 44 years. We have been blessed with 2 beautiful daughters, 2 wonderful sons-in-law and 3 amazing grandchildren.
