Living Well with Dementia

by Judy Fuhrer I got into this improvisation play by chance, called â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Villages.â&#x20AC;? I had been acting in theater since I was four years old and after getting leading roles at Michigan State, I even considered trying to make a career of it. Fortunately my life took me in a different direction, teaching and counseling children. However I always loved acting and was able to do some community theater.

Unfortunately with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s came an inability to memorize lines.

Yet I have been able to enjoy some acting-related activities with involvement in a Shakespeare reading club and in a theater acting class. A local playwright wrote an improvisation play and I was asked to be in it. There will be three public performances of the play which will be performed as a theater in the round for an expected audience of 150 to 200 local Villagers.

In a typical play you have to deliver lines as written by the writer. The great thing about improvisation is you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to memorize lines.

You are given a plot, your character and you are allowed, even forced To make up your own lines on the spot as you interact with other characters in the play who are also improvising their own lines. This is challenging, but it allows great creativity which I absolutely love!

In this play I get to play the part of a haughty, snobbish, wealthy woman who goes to a house party. She believes she has such superior aesthetic taste that she must redecorate the hostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home.

She proceeds to give the host multiple but unappreciated decorating tips.

Rhubarb Bread Pudding 8 slices bread, without crusts, toasted & cubed 1 1/2 cups milk 1/4 cup butter or margarine 5 eggs 1 1/4 cups white sugar 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 2 cups diced rhubarb 1/4 cup chopped walnuts Put bread cubes in 2 quart casserole. In saucepan heat milk & butter to boiling, pour over bread cubes, let stand 15 minutes. Combine & whisk eggs, sugar, cinnamon, salt & rhubarb, pour over bread cubes. Sprinkle walnuts on top.

Bake at 325 for 50 minutes
