Eleven Years Strong! Happy July. We are in the heat of summer, and the hustle and bustle of summer activities. While we celebrate our nation’s independence, we as an ADRC also celebrate our anniversary as an agency.

A lot has changed in 11 years, but one thing remains the same: our mission to help people age 60+ and adults with disabilities secure needed services or benefits, live with dignity and security and achieve maximum independence and quality of life.

A fun way to celebrate an anniversary is with a gift association, which dates back to the middle ages. The first year is considered the paper anniversary, the second is cotton, etc. The 11th anniversary association is steel. Steel is known for its high level of strength, low cost, and as a major building block in construction. The ADRC has many similarities to steel. We have an unbelievably strong team. Staff are experts in topic areas and assist individuals make informed decisions. We don’t charge for ADRC services, and help our consumers plan for their future long-term care cost needs; and finally, we are a building block of the community by providing resources and services including prevention programs, options counseling, benefit services, dementia care, nutrition services and more. Thank you for all the support throughout these 11 years, and we look forward to providing our strong services in the years to come! “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” ʊ Martin Luther King Jr.

Employee Spotlight ▪ Gordy Geurink I started as a volunteer for Meals On Wheels as soon as I re red. My father was a Meals On Wheels volunteer and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Along with distribu ng the meals to spots in Eau Claire, I also do a rural route delivery. I enjoy this as I was raised on a farm and enjoy the rural countryside along with the rural people I meet.

A challenge can be everyday mee ng the schedule that is set. Food is prepared in Fall Creek star ng at 4 am. It is amazing how the kitchen staff each day gets the job done on me. It then is my task to get the meals distributed on me, warm and the milk cold!

My favorite success story is having a(ended a one room country school as child, I saw a lot of talent there and I wanted to prove (probably to myself that I could get a doctorate which I was able to do in 2006. I also was a Wisconsin State wrestling champion, which for the school I a(ended (D.C. Everest) was a first. I married my high school sweetheart and she is s ll with me!!

5 I enjoy looking forward to what the task is and that is to provide food for those that are homebound. I call it the “Great Equalizer”. When the day is done whatever is there for me is really something quite minor compared to what I see during the day. In addition along the way I meet so many interesting people that are also involved.

Our son lives in North Carolina with his family and we go there 3 mes a year. From there we work a travel schedule that is either by driving (south to Florida etc.) or flying somewhere like Cancun. So we work the extended travel from there and I get to do this with the coopera on of Meals On Wheels. Our youngest is a Kindergarten teach and football coach (some combina on) but my wife and I do a lot of ac vi es with him and his significant other. Life is really great and I am so very grateful.

When faced with difficult times, you turn to those you trust. Turn to us.

Blueberries

Kayla Olmstead, MS, RD, CD

Blueberries are a simple and delicious snack that are packed full of nutri, onal benefits! One cup of blueberries contains 14% daily value of fiber. They are also packed full of phytochemicals that act as an,oxidants which help protect your body from oxida,ve stress. One cup has 80 calories, 3.6 grams of fiber, 21 grams of carbs and 25% of daily value of vitamin C. If you have diabetes, 1 serving would be ¾ cup, provide 15 grams of carbs and 60 calories. Blueberries may help prevent and reverse ageͲrelated cogni,ve decline, including Demen,a. Studies have shown that ea,ng blueberries helps maintain memory func,on and improve mood in older adults with early memory decline. Did you know? A single blueberry bush can produce as many as 6,000 blueberries per year. Bri,sh Columbia is the largest highbush blueberry growing region in the world. Blueberries are Canada’s most exported fruit. The blueberry is one of the only foods that is truly naturally blue in color. The pigment that gives blueberries their dis,nc,ve colorͶcalled anthocyaninͶis the same compound that provides the blueberry’s amazing health benefits. Monthly Challenge ideas: x Have blueberries 2x this week x Try one of the recipes this month x Go to a “Pick your own” blueberries x Reminisce about the song “Blueberry Hill.” Content from: GWAAR Nutri on Team in Collabora on with UW Stout Diete c Students by Pam VanKampen, RDN, CD

At the next meal, it is common to overeat causing greater total caloric intake than if the meal was not skipped. A beIer approach is to eat small, frequent meals and snacks to keep our blood sugar balanced.

In the Garden Play Held at Bethesda Lutheran Church

The play was about the Monse,n family; three siblings and their father. In their moment of crisis, they tried to address the impact of Alzheimer’s and demen,a ʹ what it does to those who live with the disease, both mentally and physically, and the challenges and pressures that it places on care partners. Community discussion followed the play and many comments were shared.

The play is the second of three oneͲact plays from the book The MemoryCare Plays. In 2020, the Aging & Disability Resource Center, Mayo Clinic Health System and Care Partners will bring the third play, “Riding the Waves” to Eau Claire.

The Importance of Oral Health and Demen,a

When someone is living with Alzheimer’s disease or other type of demen,a, it can become difficult to maintain good oral health as the disease progresses. It is important to establish a dental care program at, or soon aQer, a diagnosis. By not doing so, poor oral health can lead to pain and tooth loss, and can nega, vely affect selfͲesteem, and the ability to eat, laugh and smile. In the early stages it is important to focus on preven,on. Be sure to get regular checkͲups and cleanings and have necessary dental work completed. During the middle stages, the person living with demen,a may be more resistant to assistance as there are thinking abili,es that have been lost. The goal is to control bacteria by con, nuing to brush and cleaning between the teeth. If this is too difficult, an alterna,ve to brushing is using Xylitol, which is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol used frequently as a sweetener in gum, mints, and mouthwash. Xylitol kills bad bacteria in the mouth and has been shown to reduce tooth decay and the incidence of gum disease. A good toothbrush to try with longer bristles is the 525 Deep Clean SoQ Compact GUM toothbrush. For reaching the back teeth, a great tool to try is the TePe Interdental Brush Angle. For more informa,on on Xylitol and Oral Care, visit www.xylitol.org. For addi, onal informa,on on how to assist with oral care, visit the Alzheimer’s Associa,on website at hIps://www.alz.org/helpͲsupport/caregiving/dailyͲcare/dentalͲcare or Teepa Snow at hIps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ixNssks1c.

Living Well with Demen,a By Russell Martoccio

Thoughts of Summer The first thought that I would like to emphasize on this Independence Day is our duty to recognize the War Veterans of the Chippewa Valley who fought in all wars and gave their lives to protect our Freedom. Thank you for your service and sacrifice to ensure our country's safety. I certainly do not want to forget the sacrifices made by parents, husbands, wives and children who lost loved ones who went to war for our country. It is important to never, ever forget the sacrifices that were made for our country and our responsibility to preserve the Monuments of War so that they will always withstand the changes of ,me. Thank you! I love summer! It comes aQer the wild excitement of spring, the migra,on of birds, their ma,ng and choosing places to live and to defend. It is a ,me of fullness and comple,on. There is almost a sense of tropical lushness. It is a ,me of building strength and storing energy for whatever may come. Because there is so much of everything, there is a relaxa,on in effort, ,me for smelling the fresh cut hay and grass and even playing in the sun, going to family gatherings to spend ,me with our loved ones and to enjoy the firework displays, going to community parades to watch the marching bands and to admire the an,que tractor displays. It is a joy to be alive and to be able to go for walks on these beau, ful warm and sunny days! To avoid not having my demen,a diagnosis define my iden,ty, it is important for me to remind myself of the abili,es that I s,ll have and not to focus on the ones that are now impaired. I need to find ways to contribute to my community, both large and small, using my God given talents and extending my service to family, friends and neighbors. By doing these ac,vi,es I feel both wanted and useful. Par,cipa,ng in ADRC memory loss programs has taught me to open up and to converse about my condi,on. By doing so I realize that I am not alone, I am not unique and that my life s,ll has meaning. My peers have taught me to remain teachable and to focus on today because that is all I have. One day at a ,me!

Happy Fourth of July!

ADRC Adaptive Equipment Loan Program

One of the many things adap ve equipment can be great for is assis ng postͲstroke pa ents. Adap ve equipment can be used to help these pa ents have greater independence with everyday life ac vi es. There is a great variety of assis ve devices in the ADRC loan closet for all areas of selfͲcare including dressing, bathing, grooming, cooking, feeding, toile ng, and mobilizing. A hemiͲwalker is a mobile aide designed for individuals with the use of only one hand or arm. It is ideal for individuals who do not require a walker but need a wider base for support. This product is lighter than a walker and is more stable than a cane, ensuring user safety. Whether you are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, or just needing something for a short me, the loan program can be a useful service. All adap ve equipment items can be borrowed up to three months for a small rental fee. See staff in case of financial hardship.

Flip the Script Event Offers Solu, ons

On May 7th, the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County, Wisconsin Ins,tute for Healthy Aging and older adults in the community teamed up for a conversa,on about factors that influence wellness as we age. In the “Help Yourself to BeIer Health” presenta,on and follow up discussion, par, cipants shared what they think about: nega,ve percep, ons of growing older, how loneliness and social isola,on affect wellness in older adults, and the role we can play in our own wellness. Par,cipants also learned more about current and upcoming new preven,on programs. Key Messages x Only 20% of your health is determined by what happens in a health care seXng. The other 80% happens where you live, your family and social supports, your income, your educa,on, and your job. For beIer health, we want to influence all the things that we can change: access to supports for healthy lifestyles, exercise programs, educa,on, transporta,on, and more. x Research has shown that people with posi,ve percep, ons of growing older live, on average ʹ an addi, onal 7.5 years longer than those who feel that aging is all downhill ʹ decline, illness, incapacity. Recognizing how ageist thinking penetrates our percep, ons and inten, onally changing our aXtudes toward growing older can impact longevity. x We’re learning more about how loneliness and social isola,on nega, vely impact our health. The ADRC’s health promo,on programs are researched and proven to provide significant health benefits from preven,ng falls to managing chronic health problems to increasing physical ac,vity. Feedback was interes,ng in all three categories ʹ how to help themselves to beIer health, how to combat loneliness and the ageism. It was especially intriguing that some recognized their own internalized ageism ʹ “stop using my age as an excuse for stuff,” “stop ac,ng like I can be grumpy and rude or “en,tled” just b/c I’m older” and “never too old to start exercising.” EvidenceͲbased health promo,on programs offered through the ADRC of Eau Claire County include: Stepping On falls preven,on Living Well with Chronic Condi, ons selfͲmanagement program Healthy Living with Diabetes Healthy Living with Chronic Pain Strong Bodies strength and balance training program Walk With Ease for arthri,s selfͲmanagement Powerful Tools for Caregivers Mind Over MaIer; Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder To find dates, ,mes and loca, ons of upcoming workshops, go to adrcevents.org or call 715Ͳ839Ͳ4735.

Medicare Quiz Answer:

True, if you opt not to enroll in Medicare Part B or forget to sign up when you are first eligible and don’t have employer coverage through your own or a spouse’s current employer, you will be penalized (when you do enroll) with a premium that increases for each year that you were not enrolled. You could also have to wait a year or longer before your Part B medical benefits take effect, depending on when and how you finally do enroll.

Veterans Ͳ Special Monthly Benefits (Aid and A(endance)

Special Monthly Compensa on benefits may be awarded to Veterans or surviving spouses in addi on to basic Compensa on or Pension benefits, if the claimant has been determined to be totally disabled by VA (100%) and other certain condi ons are met. These benefits are simply addi onal monetary awards and cannot be applied for exclusive of Compensa on or Pension. Special Monthly Pension benefits are payable to a Veteran receiving basic Improved Pension for two reasons.

1. Housebound Special Pension Benefit is an increased rate of rate of pension payable to a veteran who is en tled to pension and who is not in need of regular aid and a,endance, if, in addi on to having a single permanent disability rated 100 percent disabling the veteran: has addi onal disability or disabili es independently ratable at 60 percent or more, separate and dis nct from the permanent disability rated as 100 percent disabling and involving different anatomical segments or bodily systems, or is “permanently housebound” by reason of disability or disabili es. This requirement is met when the veteran is substan ally confined to his or her dwelling and the immediate premises or, if ins tu onalized, to the ward or clinical area, and it is reasonably certain that the disability or disabili es and resultant confinement will con nue throughout his or her life me. 38 C.F.R. § 3.351(d). 2. Aid and A,endance Special Pension Benefit is an increased rate of Pension paid by VA when a Veteran rated at total disability (100%) is helplessness or being so nearly helpless as to require the regular aid and a,endance of another person due to any service or nonͲservice connected disability. The fact that other nonͲserviceͲrelated disabili es exist are not considered by VA when establishing eligibility for Compensa onͲbased Aid and A,endance benefits. The veteran, spouse, surviving spouse or parent will be considered in need of regular aid and a,endance if he or she: is blind or so nearly blind as to be considered legally blind under state or federal standards; Is a pa ent in a nursing home (note: VA considers assisted living communi es to be equivalent to nursing homes under 38 C.F.R. § 3.1 (z)) because of mental or physical incapacity; or inability of the claimant to dress or undress himself (herself), or to keep himself (herself) ordinarily clean and presentable; frequent need of adjustment of any special prosthe c or orthopedic appliances which by reason of the par cular disability cannot be done without aid; inability of claimant to feed himself (herself) through loss of coordina on of upper extremi es or through extreme weakness; inability to a,end to the wants of nature; or incapacity, physical or mental, which requires care or assistance on a regular basis to protect the claimant from hazards or dangers incident to his or her daily environment. (38 C.F.R § 3.352).
