Emergency Management Introduces Notification System

Eau Claire County Emergency Management, in conjunction with the Cities of Altoona and Eau Claire, have introduced a new emergency notification system. This system will allow anyone that has signed up for it to receive notifications of severe weather, major natural or manmade disasters impacting Eau Claire County, and other emergency alerts from fire and law enforcement officials.

For those on Facebook and Twitter, all weather alerts will be posted to the Eau Claire County Emergency Management pages.

This system may be used by emergency personnel in the event of other incidents potentially hazardous to life, safety, and health. This includes train derailments, missing person searches, wildfires, and hazardous materials events like the major fire WRR had several years ago. Messages that may be sent include; evacuation, shelter-in-place, post event cleanup announcements, and anything relevant to the incident and public safety.

VA Healthcare

Many veterans debate needing VA healthcare when they have their own health insurance. VA healthcare does not need to be your primary healthcare. You can pick and choose what to go to the VA for.

•Let’s say you have a medica*on your local provider has prescribed you. If that medica*on costs $20 for a 30 day supply, it may be be/er to get it filled at the VA. VA charges $8Ͳ$11 max for medica*on.

•Or maybe you’re having knee surgery. If you get it done locally; you may be charged whatever deduc*ble your insurance has. Let’s say that’s $500. VA’s specialty care max coͲpay charge is $50 for a procedure plus $8Ͳ11 for prescrip*ons from the surgery. You can possibly have knee surgery for $60.*

*Different coͲpays apply if you are inpa*ent.

You have the flexibility to choose which one to use and for what. Just keep in mind your local provider cannot see what the VA is helping with and vise versa.

This wholeͲgrain food is na*ve to northern Africa and is commonly found in Middle Eastern cuisine. Couscous is small pasta made of semolina, a form of wheat. It can be eaten as a side dish, salad or dessert, and you can use it in place of rice or quinoa. Ea*ng couscous provides you with a good source of lean, vegetarian protein.

Living Well with Memory Loss and Early Demen a Although there are no known treatments for dementia that can slow or reverse what is happening in the brain, there are things that can be done that may reduce the symptoms and positively impact daily life. People living with memory loss and/or dementia can take charge of their own health and take steps to live their best.

This seminar presents some brain wellness strategies and the evidence behind them to improve overall health and wellǦbeing for the individual with memory loss and their caregiver.

Memory Choir

Bev and Deb have been friends for around 45 years. They met through church and found that both of their husbands were teachers at DeLong and played soLball together as well. Bev and Deb’s friendship grew as they sang together for years in the church choir and adult contemporary ensemble at St. James the Greater. Eventually, that became too difficult for Deb to manage with her memory loss.

Luckily it was around that *me that Stand in the Light choir was star*ng up. “It was perfect *ming, because Deb loves to sing, and so do I,” says Bev.

The choir’s director, Cathy Reitz was a friend of the duo and encouraged them to join. “It was something that Deb could do that made her feel good, and it made me feel good that I could help.” Their favorite song that the choir sings is “Our theme song, ‘Stand in the Light,’” Bev explains, “Deb cries when she hears it, because it speaks to her, personally.”

Since her memory loss diagnosis, “Deb’s personality is s*ll the same,” says Bev, “Sweet. Kind. That all stays. She likes to laugh. That’s s*ll there.” Being in Stand in the Light, “Gives us something we can do together. It gives Deb’s husband, Tom, a li/le bit of respite. It’s good all the way around, and it’s fun!”

The Stand in the Light Memory Choir is accep*ng new members in August and September. The choir is for people living with demen*a, their care partners, and volunteers who come together to share the love of music.

Rehearsals are every Thursday, August 23 through November 15, 2018, 9:30 ʹ 11:00 am, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar Street, Eau Claire.

Find Support in your Caregiving Role

Talk to someone who provides care for their aging loved one and they will tell you what a difficult and stressful job caregiving can be.

The American Medical Associa*on states that the role of caregiving places demands on the caregiver which leaves them at risk for health problems including serious illness and depression. And according to the American Journal of Public Health, middleͲaged and older women caring for their spouses are six *mes more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety disorders than their nonͲcaregiving counterparts. The result of this decline in health by the caregiver not only affects the person giving the care, but it may also compromise the care they are providing their loved one.

The key difference between a caregiver who is barely hanging on and one who is happy and at ease is having proper support in their role as a caregiver. Healthy and content caregivers receive help with tasks like providing personal cares and housekeeping and they take regular breaks from caregiving.

The American Medical Associa*on suggests to physicians that “a referral to a support group should be recommended for all caregivers.”

OLen*mes, people hear the words “support group” and immediately tune out. They are uncomfortable with the idea of sharing their feelings. Or they think of a support group as a bunch of people siMng around whining about their lives. Support groups are much more than that and the benefits they offer are valuable.

• Provide valuable informa*on that will increase your knowledge of caregiving.

• Teach coping skills.

• A place to share common concerns and joys.

They provide emo*onal support and are a safe place to iden*fy and express stressful feelings.

Previously, the ADRC had been the Office on Aging and expanding into the Aging & Disability Resource Center as part of a larger statewide initiative that overhauled the Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long-term care system. We feel that expanding into an ADRC has really benefited the community, allowing us to serve a vaster array of citizens.

The best part about being an ADRC is all the customers that reach out to us for help! It is a team effort here to make sure that we are always providing high quality, accurate and beneficial services to anyone that walks through our doors.

The best part of about working at the ADRC is having an amazing team to work with every day! All of the staff are dedicated to the mission and it truly shows through all of the collaboration and teamwork that happens on a daily basis. And we like to have fun, too!

What is the Strong Bones Program?

Strong Bones is a 10Ͳweek strength training program. Classes meet twice weekly.

Each oneͲhour class includes a warmͲup, progressive weight training, flexibility, and balance. Minimal equipment is needed: sets of dumbbells, ankle weights, and a floor mat or towel. All new par*cipants must complete forms at an Informa*on Session before par*cipa*ng in class.

Chronic Condi*ons.

Eau Claire Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2019-2021 Plan on Aging was developed with a significant amount of input from the community. There are themes throughout all of the goals focusing on combating loneliness and isolation, improving outreach and education, focusing on prevention and improving access to resources. This plan also incorporates new partnerships with community agencies such as the public library, school districts, etc. and enhances some of the partnerships that already exist.

In addition to the required goal areas of Advocacy, Caregiving, Dementia, Healthy Aging and the Elder Nutrition Program we have also identified some core local priorities based on feedback the ADRC has received. We have set goals for local priority areas in combating loneliness and isolation as well as transportation.

In total, there are 25 goals that the ADRC is proposing to work on over the course of 2019-2021 specific to aging which expand and enhance services to meet the needs of older adults in Eau Claire County.

It is important to know that the plan is still in draft form which means you still have an opportunity to provide feedback! If you would like to read the draft plan, you can find it on our website at www.eauclaireadrc.org. It is also available in hard copy in our office. Coming soon...The Aging & Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County is one of 10 agencies in Wisconsin who will be launching Walk with Ease workshops later this summer, thanks to a mini grant from the Wisconsin Ins*tute for Healthy Aging.

Walk with Ease was specifically developed for people with arthri*s who want to be more physically ac*ve but is also appropriate for people without arthri*s, par*cularly those with diabetes, heart disease and other chronic condi*ons who need to be more ac*ve. The only preͲrequisite is the ability to be on your feet for at least 10 minutes without increased pain.

SixͲweek walking group mee*ng three *mes a week (total of 18 sessions). While walking is the central ac*vity, Walk with Ease is a mul*Ͳcomponent program that also includes health educa*on, stretching and strengthening exercises, and mo*va*onal strategies.

Par*cipants will receive the Walk with Ease guidebook.

Also includes informa*on on arthri*s, managing pain and s*ffness, *ps on proper clothing and equipment, selfͲmonitoring, what to do when exercise hurts, and how to overcome barriers.

Celebrating Independence Hello Everyone!

It’s great to be with you this month as we celebrate our country’s independence.

While writing this article I have been watching my puppy, Lacey rifle through her toy box, obviously looking for a particular toy. I have been tempted to help her. But then I thought about myself and how irritated I get when others make assumptions regarding what I am able or not able to do.

Those assumptions are often related to my diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Often those assumptions are accurate, but not always. I have learned to speak up for myself when the issue is important to me and have often been thanked for giving my opinion.

Obviously it is often difficult for our care givers and others to know what level of help we need in any given situation.

However I feel that it is important that the issue is considered and discussed.

If we do this I think we can all feel better about both giving and receiving help.

By the way Lacey found the toy on her own, she is so proud!

NEW MEDICARE CARDS SCAM ALERT New Medicare cards will no longer have the Social Security Numbers. Beware of calls from individuals claiming to represent Medicare or Social Security Administration, saying the beneficiary needs a new Medicare card. They may threaten beneficiaries with the loss of Medicare benefits if they don’t comply.

Beneficiaries are asked to provide their personal information, particularly their Medicare number and bank account number, sometimes even being offered gifts or money. In other examples, beneficiaries are told that they “have to pay” for this new Medicare card.

It is important to remember that: • • •

Medicare beneficiaries will receive a new Medicare card automatically Medicare cards do not expire Medicare will not call beneficiaries to offer a new card or request information in order to issue a new card Beneficiaries who lose their Medicare card can request a new one with a new Medicare ID number from the Social Security Administration

30th Annual Senior Americans Day

Another great Senior Americans Day (SAD) event held at UWͲEau Claire in June! The day was enjoyed by all ʹ including a record number of a/endees…550! The day included more than 80 exhibitors, 49 workshops, good food, entertainment and beau*ful sunny weather!

This year’s event marked the 30th anniversary and at the opening ceremony a few facts were shared: • In 1988, the first SAD event was held at the Chippewa Valley Technical College and the keynote speaker was Art Linkle/er…remember him? The event grew and aLer 4 years was moved to UWͲEau Claire • For many years, the event was held in March during spring break. There were many blizzards, snow storms, and travel hazards, but people s*ll braved the weather to come out for the day.

• In 2015, it was decided to move the date to the first Tuesday in June to avoid the inclement weather in March and enjoy the outdoor space the campus offers.

• People come from all over including 67 ci*es and towns throughout Wisconsin.

• The average age is 70, the youngest that has a/ended is 57 and the oldest…103!
