MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY Monday, January 17th, 2022

This year marks the 27th anniversary of the natonal day of service. This day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communites.

Americans celebrated the frst ofcial Martn Luther King, Jr. Day, the only federal holiday commemoratng an African-American, on Monday, January 20, 1986. In 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a natonal day of service, and marking the third Monday in January every year as the Martn Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Dr. King advocated for non-violent resistance to overcome injustce as a means of lifing racial oppression. Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; the youngest person ever to receive the high honor. On April 4, 1968 at age 39, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee as he stood on the balcony of his hotel. Dr. King had traveled to Memphis to lead a march in support of striking sanitaton workers.

According to Dr. King, the purpose of educaton is to enable one to sif and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fcton. The functon of educaton is to teach one to think intensively and to think critcally. We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character, that is the true goal of educaton.
