New Program Aims to Increase Outdoor Physical Activity in Winter and Reduce Social Isolation: Wintermission Eau Claire

Wintermission Eau Claire is a new program aimed at reducing social isolation and supporting outdoor physical activity during the winter months. Eau Claire is one of three Wintermission cities and is helping to develop strategies specific to winter for other cities. The program is led by 8 80 Cities, a non -profit organization based in Toronto, Canada and is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Global Ideas Fund. The Eau Claire Wintermission team includes participants from the cities of Eau Claire, Altoona, EC County Health Department, UW-Eau Claire, Visit Eau Claire and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

The program offers winter gear sharing, events and a 4-mile winter recreation path that is plowed with high priority after snow events, making it the perfect route for winter walking, strolling, running or biking.

Just bundle up with multiple layers, a hat, warm socks and boots or shoes, mittens and you’ll be on your way! The route borders the Chippewa River and multiple iconic downtown and UWCampus locations. The trail is accessible from multiple points. A map can be found online at https://visiteauclaire.com/winter/ winter-route/.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY Monday, January 17th, 2022 This year marks the 27th anniversary of the national day of service. This day was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Americans celebrated the first official Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the only federal holiday commemorating an African-American, on Monday, January 20, 1986. In 1994, Congress designated the holiday as a national day of service, and marking the third Monday in January every year as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

Dr. King advocated for non-violent resistance to overcome injustice as a means of lifting racial oppression. Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; the youngest person ever to receive the high honor. On April 4, 1968 at age 39, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee as he stood on the balcony of his hotel. Dr. King had traveled to Memphis to lead a march in support of striking sanitation workers.

According to Dr. King, the purpose of education is to enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction. The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character, that is the true goal of education.

Caretaker Corner

A Different Kind of Truth…Caretaker Fibs Liar, liar, pants afire! A schoolroom taunt meant to reveal and disgrace someone who was less than truthful. Caretakers of people with dementia have pants on fire all the time. I was taught not to lie. I lied to my wife, Karen one time. I hid the truth and snuck around behind her back. I was plotting a surprise party for her 60th birthday, but I still felt guilty and unfaithful. It came off perfectly, but I could not avoid the negative feelings.

Years later, I got pretty good at lying to her. And I felt good about doing it. I gave myself a pat on the back for the well phrased prevarications. About three years after Karen was diagnosed with dementia, she began having hallucinations and thinking scenarios that could not happen. I was caught off guard the first time she told me her mother would be coming in a little while. Her mother had been dead more than 40 years. I don ’t remember what I said but it was not the lie I should have told. A compassionate answer would have been, “It’s still early. She’ll be along in a while.” The kindest answer will defer the expectation and usually the idea will be forgotten in a few minutes.

As the disease progressed, she forgot who I was and as the day drew to an end she would say, “Don’t you think you should be going pretty soon?” “After I finish the dishes,” I would say. I saw an apt phrase for the necessary fib on the internet: To relieve, not deceive. Being agreeable instead of confrontational preserves peace and tranquility. Telling a person with memory loss that someone they are expecting to visit has died is cruel. Diverting the line of thought instead is merciful and avoids an unnecessary argument that cannot be won.

thing and schedule it. Carving out time that feels good and reflects your authentic self is critical to your health and well-being.

Skip the Resolutions and Set New Year’s Goals Most New Year’s resolutions are discarded pretty quickly. Studies have shown that less than 25% of people remain committed after 30 days. Yet there is value in setting goals to make things work more smoothly and to be sure you are living in a way that is true to yourself rather than always fulfilling the needs and expectations of others.

Before setting New Year’s goals this year, it is important to begin by taking some time to think about this quote from author K. L. Toth, “One of the greatest tragedies in life is to lose your own sense of self and accept the version of you that is expected by everyone else.” Caregiving is a role often defined by the expectations of other people – the person you’re caring for; other family members and friends; and medical, legal, and human services professionals. Take a little time to focus on your needs and what you might like to bring into your life as you look ahead to a new year. Think about how you can practice self-kindness, open yourself to new solutions as the caregiving landscape changes for you, and reach out for help when you need it.

A list of goals might include: Committing to something enjoyable This could be anything from scheduling a daily walk or setting aside time to read a good book to taking on a fun project like learning to knit, recreating a dish from your favorite cooking show, playing an instrument, or learning to paint. You could even take this a step further by finding an online book club or class for cooking, painting, yoga or other activity. Commit to one

Delegating and asking for help Delegating and asking for help ensures that you can keep your commitment to doing something for yourself. Can someone call and visit with your care partner while you attend your class, group, or practice? Is there a family member, friend, or neighbor who wouldn’t mind regularly taking over a chore that would free up some time for you? If there isn’t anyone who comes to mind, brainstorm with professionals at local resources to see what’s available.

Planning for your Care Partner’s future There may come a day when you are no longer able to provide care due to your own limitations or because your care partner’s needs are too advanced to handle. Research available options knowing that doing so can save time and stress in the future and can bring peace of mind now. And, difficult as it may be, determine who would provide care if anything interfered with your ability to do so. Designate that person as the alternate to care for your loved one in your will.

The following meal sites are now open for sit down dining:  Augusta Senior & Community Center (lunch)  Fairchild Community Center (lunch)  LE Phillips Senior Center (2 evenings/month)  Grab and Go only: St. John’s Apartments (lunch)  If you do not feel comfortable eating at the meal site, you will still have the Grab and Go option. Please let us know which you’ll be doing when you make your reservation.  Wednesday’s Salads (listed on menu) are only available to Congregate Dining Sites.

Augusta Senior Center Monday-Friday at 11:30 am call 715-286-2953 to make your reservation by noon the previous day. Indicate when making your reservation if you will be dining in or taking out.

Weather Cancellation Policy With winter just around the corner, we’d like to remind everyone of our policy regarding closures of the Meal on Wheels and Senior Dining Program.

Meals on Wheels and Senior Dining Sites may be closed if we have heavy snowfall, extreme temperatures, icy roads, storms/tornado/ heavy winds, etc. If Eau Claire schools are closed due to weather, Meals on Wheels and Senior Dining Sites will also be closed. If Eau Claire schools have a late start, Meals on Wheels will still deliver.

For delivery, we ask that you please have snow and ice removed from entrance and sidewalks so that our volunteers can safely deliver your meal to you. If your sidewalks are not cleared you run the risk of no delivery.

To check for our closings, you will be able to find them scrolling on the bottom of the TV along with the school closings on your local channels WEAU-TV 13 and WQOW-TV 18. You can also find our closings directly on their websites: www.weau.com and www.wqow.com.

We also announce our closings on WAXX radio.

Brain Health Check-Up Normal Aging or Something Else?

A brain health check-up is a wellness tool that helps identify possible changes in memory and cognition.

We screen for other things, why not your memory?

The tool creates a baseline of where a person is at so that future changes can be monitored. It’s free, confidential, and takes only 10 minutes!

Early Memory Loss Support Group Co-Facilitator (1) The early memory loss support group is for individuals living with memory loss and the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias and their care partner. The group meets the 4th Wednesday of the month from 1:30 - 3:00 pm at Lake Street Methodist Church, 337 Lake Street, Eau Claire. The support group provides an opportunity for individuals to share concerns, challenges, coping strategies, strengths, and more.

To co-facilitate, you must have: • • •

Experience with people living with dementia, patience, and calm demeanor Fun and outgoing personality Commitment once a month for 1.5 hours through end of 2022

Memory Café Volunteer (2-3) The memory café is for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia along with their care partners and is provided in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. It is a time to socialize, enjoy a program, activity, entertainment, and spend time in a judgment-free zone with others experiencing similar journeys. The goal is to make every guest feel as comfortable and welcome as possible. The café meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 10:00 - 11:30 am at the Chippewa Valley Museum in Carson Park, 1204 E. 1/2 Moon, Eau Claire. Volunteers are needed for: • • • •

Welcoming and socializing with guests Helping with set-up and clean up Lead and assist with activities Commitment once a month for 2 hours through end of 2022

Help with Heat this Winter By the GWAAR Legal Services Team

As the temperatures drop, it’s important to keep in mind that there are several types of heating assistance options administered through the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP).

Heating Assistance. This is a one-time payment for a portion of heating costs; it is not intended to cover the entire cost of heating a residence. The amount of the energy assistance benefit varies on the household’s size, income, and energy costs. In most cases the energy assistance benefit is paid directly to the energy supplier.

Crisis Assistance. A household may be eligible for crisis assistance in an energy emergency. Crisis assistance is available through local WHEAP agencies that provide a 24-hour crisis phone number to help with emergencies that occur after business hours. Crisis assistance is intended to provide emergency and/or preventative services to assist eligible households experiencing an energy emergency.

Furnace Assistance. WHEAP emergency heating system assistance can provide services to eligible homeowners if the furnace or boiler stops operating during the heating season. Heating system assistance includes payment for repairs, or in some situations your residence may qualify for a total replacement of a non-operating furnace or boiler. Call the local energy assistance office immediately if you are experiencing a no -heat situation.

Eligibility for the above programs are based on a number of factors, including income. For more information call Western Dairyland at 715-836-7511.

VEHICLE MODIFICATION GRANT Funds available Do you have a vehicle that needs modifications for accessibility? Are you short on the funds to pay for the work to be completed? Contact the ADRC at 715-839-4735, we may be able to help pay for those modifications.

The Vehicle Modification Grant has money available, up to $10,000, to make a vehicle accessible for caregivers, adults over the age of 60 or adults (18-59) that have a disability. This may also help with the purchase of a new or used modified vehicle.

ADRC Prevention and Health Promotion Workshops

Healthy Living with Chronic Pain (virtual) If living with ongoing pain is keeping you from doing the things you want to do, this 6-week workshop can help give you the tools and strategies to manage your pain. If you’re 18 or older and have or live with someone who has chronic pain, this program is for you! Topics include: Short-term goal setting, Getting quality sleep, Better emotional health, Medication usage and evaluating treatment options, Balancing activity and rest, Creating a pain profile, Relaxation, Fatigue management, Communication skills with friends, family and medical team. The program does not replace existing treatments, but serves to complement your current medical treatment plan, and is not meant for a person who has pain medication addiction issues.

WHEN: Thursdays, 10:00 am- 12:30 pm January 27 - March 3, 2022

Stepping On (virtual) can help you avoid a dangerous and costly fall so you can keep doing the things you love to do. In just 7 weeks, you will learn: Strength and balance exercises you can adapt to your individual level; to identify and remove or avoid fall hazards both inside and outside your home; how vision, hearing, medication, and footwear affect your risk of falling and what you can do to minimize these risks; and how to get back on your feet the right way if you do fall.

WHEN: Tuesdays, 10:00 - 12:15 pm February 1 - March 15, 2022

Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder (virtual) Three-session workshop designed to give women the tools they need to take control of symptoms. It provides information and group activities along with simple exercises and dietary changes to practice at home. Even if you do not have leakage symptoms now, it is never too early or too late to think about bladder and bowel health.

Adaptive Equipment Loan Closet Update

Adaptive Equipment can make everyday tasks easier and safer!

The ADRC Loan Closet allows individuals to borrow devices for up to three months. This allows a person see if it works well and have time to find a permanent solution.  As of Jan 3rd, 2022, we will return to requesting a small non -refundable contribution, ($5 or $10 depending on the item). This can be waived in cases of hardship.  We also have room to accept a few donations for the loan closet if in very good condition.

Commonly needed items include: 4 wheeled walker with seat, bed transfer rail, knee scooter.  Items in the loan closet include wheelchairs, walkers, canes, lighted magnifiers, large playing cards for those with visual impairment, shower chairs, bed transfer rails, and much more!
