Please join me in welcoming Linda Struck to her new position as Director of the ADRC. Katherine Schneider, ADRC Board Chair My name is Linda Struck and as of January 21, 2019, I’m the new Aging & Disability Resource Center Director for Eau Claire County. I have experience working both in the public and private sector. Prior to the ADRC, I spent the last 18 years working for the Department of Human Services in the Economic Support Unit, also known at the Great Rivers Income Maintenance Consortium. During my tenure with Human Services I worked as an Economic Support Supervisor and then moved into the Economic Support Consortium Administrator position. I was responsible for administrating, planning, directing and coordinating public assistance programs for Eau Claire County and the ten county Great Rivers Income Maintenance Consortium. Prior to working for Human Services, I worked at Lutheran Social Services where I managed programs for individuals of all ages with developmental, mental and physical disabilities.

I have a bachelor’s degree from UW Stout in Vocational Rehabilitation with a minor in Business. I’ve lived in the Eau Claire area for most of my life. I’m married and have two sons, a 16-year-old who is a sophomore in high school and a 19-year-old who attends CVTC. I look forward to this next chapter in my career and I’m very excited to work in my new position with ADRC staff. I’m sure you will be hearing more from me in future newsletters. ADRC Adap ve Equipment Loan Program The Aging & Disability Resource Center adap$ve equipment loan program offers a way to try out equipment for a short period of $me. Whether you are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, or needing something for a short amount of $me, the loan program can be a useful service, no medical or electronic equipment.

Items can be borrowed up to three months for a small contribu$on fee. See staff in case of financial hardship. No equipment dona$ons accepted at this $me.

A car caddie provides just the support needed in ge7ng in and out of the car. This durable, nylon strap handle installs and removes within seconds on any framed vehicle window. Simply roll down the window, put the end of the Car Caddie strap around the top of the window frame, snap the buckle in place, adjust the handle height, roll up the window, and that's it!

If you use a cane, make sure to replace a worn cane $p to avoid slipping on ice. If you do not have a cane, the loan closet has singular, 4Ͳprong, and sitͲ toͲstand canes available.

3 February is here, which generally means for Wisconsin the groundhog possibly seeing his shadow (We don’t want 6 more weeks of winter!), cold weather and dreary days. One area of entertainment happens however, and it just might help shake off those mid-winter blues: The Super Bowl. This year The Super Bowl will be on Sunday, February 3, 2019. Whether you watch for the game, the funny commercials, or just to partake in some delicious food, The Super Bowl has a little something for everyone.

Some fun facts about the Super Bowl that you may not know: ▪ The very first Super Bowl touchdown was scored in 1967 by Packers wide receiver Max McGee. ▪ Tickets for the very first Super Bowl in 1967 cost an average of $6, which was apparently too pricey for many and there were about 30,000 vacant seats! The average cost today is roughly $5,000.

▪ Of the top 10 most watched American television programs of all time, nine of them are Super Bowls ▪ According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Super Bowl Sunday is America’s "second-largest food consumption day." (Only Thanksgiving Day beats it.)

Along with the other changes in the ADRC, we also have been shifting around some positions!

We are excited to have Jen Solfest as an Options Counselor, who was previously a Resource Specialist. Molly Yang has moved into the Resource Specialist position from Administrative Associate, and Michelle Fellom has moved into the Administrative Associate position! We are eager to have them all in their new roles, and look forward to continuing the great work here at the ADRC!

Employee Spotlight Gilda Halbleib I am a cook at the Fall Creek Kitchen. I like helping meet the nutritional needs of seniors in a way that is nutritious, but especially tasty. I love experimenting to make food taste better. My favorite part about working at the Fall Creek Kitchen is my wonderful co-workers and knowing I am making a difference in a small way. My favorite success story is while working at Sacred Heart Hospital we did a TV segment on heart healthy eating. I made a vegetarian tofu scramble and vegetarian tacos.

Initially the TV reporters were hesitant to try them, but ended up really enjoying them!

I like to try new recipes, running with my dog, spending time hiking with my daughter and husband, family and friends and traveling. Growing up in the Philippines my father’s profession was cooking and I learned most of what I know from him. Later, I worked in Dubai and learned a lot of international cooking. My natural love

of cooking lead me to trying & experimenting with new foods. I love developing and trying new recipes.

Living Well with Alzheimer’s

FAREWELL Hello everyone, it’s great to be with you again this month!

About three years ago I wrote my ďŹ rst monthly ar$cle on living well with Alzheimer’s. I wrote: “My name is Judy Fuhrer and I have Alzheimer’s. ‌ It is important for all of us to be connected as a family helping each other to enjoy the best of life possible while living with Alzheimer’s. This column is devoted to that goal.â€?

I have really enjoyed wri$ng the ar$cles, but aOer wri$ng over thirty of them I believe it is $me to hand the task over to others. I want to thank you all for your support and many kind responses to the ar$cles.

I want to thank the Eau Claire County ADRC and especially Lisa Wells for the opportunity to oer my views as a person challenged by Alzheimer’s. Those of us challenged by various forms of demen$a are fortunate to have access to a variety of programs in Eau Claire County.

So, I’m a Caregiver. Now What?

Iden$fying yourself as a caregiver is important because it connects you with resources, helps you deal with stress and gives you tools to provide the best care possible for your loved one.

The ďŹ rst beneďŹ t to realizing your role as a caregiver is that you will be connected with community resources. Home care agencies, home delivered meals, volunteer organiza$ons, transporta$on services, support groups and senior congregate dining are some services that can lighten the load for any caregiver.

Second, caregiving can be diďŹƒcult and stressful! Maintaining friendships, aPending support groups, taking $me for you and caring for your own health are good ways to fend o stress.

And lastly, once you see yourself as a caregiver you will begin to see just how important your role is in the life of your loved one. Delega$ng du$es to other family members and/or friends is something that not only takes the strain o of one person but is good for everyone involved.

Do not downplay the tasks that you do! The assistance you are giving may be the one thing keeping the person living in their own home. You are a caregiver Í´ enjoy your journey!

Myth Some types of sugar are better for you than others.

Fact

Natural sweeteners aren't really better for you than more refined ones. A tablespoon of honey, maple syrup, and white sugar all provide roughly the same amount of sugar with essentially no additional nutrients. Your body doesn't recognize any differences between them. Instead of trying to focus on the type of sugar your adding, try to find ways to reduce their use as much as possible and treat them as a condiment more than a key ingredient to your food.

Physical Ac vity for Bone Health. A lot of focus has been put on the importance of certain nutrients for maintaining bone health such as calcium and vitamin D. But a largely ignored component of bone health as we get older is the importance of regular weight bearing ac$vity. In order for our bones to remain strong we have to give them a reason to rebuild themselves stronger and that all starts with providing consistent physical ac$vity. Here are a few ac$vi$es that can help keep your bones strong:

HighͲimpact weightͲbearing exercises. HighͲimpact weightͲbearing exercises help build bones and keep them strong. If you have broken a bone due to osteoporosis or are at risk of breaking a bone, you may need to avoid highͲimpact exercises. If you’re not sure, you should check with your healthcare provider. Examples are: dancing, highͲimpact aerobics, hiking, jogging/running, jumping rope, stair climbing, tennis.

LowͲimpact weightͲbearing exercises. LowͲimpact weightͲbearing exercises can also help keep bones strong and are a safe alterna$ve if you cannot do highͲimpact exercises. Examples of lowͲimpact weightͲbearing exercises are: Ellip$cal training machines, lowͲimpact aerobics, stairͲstep machines, walking on a treadmill or outside.

MuscleͲStrengthening Exercises. These exercises include ac$vi$es where you move your body, a weight or some other resistance against gravity. They are also known as resistance exercises and include: liOing weights, using elas$c exercise bands, using weight machines, liOing your own body weight, func$onal movements such as standing and rising up on your toes.

Piles of Paper… What is Recyclable and What Isn’t?

Of all the recyclable categories, none have more fussy rules than paper products. The vast number of items that can be made out of paper creates question about what can be recycled. Shiny paper? Freezer Boxes? What about shredded paper? Cardboard, boxboard, egg cartons, those formed pieces that protect new appliances… the list goes on.

Eau Claire County is single stream, which means that you do NOT need to keep paper separate from everything else.

However, it DOES save room in your bin if you collapse cardboard and place it next to your bin at pick-up time. Let’s break it down, the most common paper varieties and questions are answered below!

Shredded paper

This material is not accepted for recycling at many materials recovery facilities (MRFs), because the equipment just isn’t equipped to handle it. Plastic bags full of shredded paper will be landfilled. Check with your hauler to find out if they can accept shredded paper. If they do, it must be put in paper bags that are closed with tape or a couple of staples and marked as “shredded”. Avoid shredding paper if at all possible.

Freezer and refrigerator boxes

Several years ago, these were not recyclable. They were treated with a chemical to prevent freezer burn and leaking that interfered with the recyclability of the material. This chemical is not used as frequently, because of changes in packaging practices and you can now recycle them. If the food touches the box directly, put the box in the trash! If it is in a plastic wrap inside the box, you can recycle the box (but not the plastic).

Other food boxes

Boxes from your pantry can all be recycled, even if they have little plastic windows. Collapse all boxes as much as possible.

Newspaper

Newspaper is highly recyclable. Remove any plastic bags they came in (and recycle the bag with your other films!) and toss them in your bin.

Cardboard

Newspaper tonnages have plummeted, but cardboard rates are climbing. Recyclers are calling this the “Amazon Effect”. More and more little boxes are ending up in recycling. Collapse the boxes as much as possible. 3D boxes are difficult to recycle, so lay them flat! Large boxes should be cut down to no larger than 4’x4’ so it can fit in the trucks.

Formed paper products

Egg cartons and the packing material are all recyclable. Put them in your bin!

Schedule Maintain consistency for activities such as bathing, dressing, mealtimes, bedtime, etc.

Peace When your loved one is agitated, provide a calm environment and reassurance. Try not to argue but find out what might be causing the agitation. Ask the question, “Why is this happening?”

Eliminate Limit evening beverages such as coffee, soda and other drinks containing caffeine.

Cue Decision-making can be extremely difficult for an individual with dementia, and limiting clutter, excessive choices and over-stimulation can help them easily decide on an activity, meal, article of clothing, you name it. Setting certain items or options at the forefront or in distinctive containers can assist in the decision-making process. Another example could be placing a brightly colored medication box alone in a specific spot on the kitchen counter. This object is distinctive and its placement minimizes competition for attention. This type of strategy could help a loved one remember to take their medications. Speech therapy is a great resource and can assist in using meaningful cues throughout the house.

Lights As the disease progresses, some people may experience sundowning. Sundowning is a term used to describe more confusion and agitation later in the day. Studies suggest that lights can be an effective way to ease symptoms.
