The Mind Over Ma er; Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder workshop is designed to give women the tools they need to take control of their symptoms. Even if you don’t have leakage symptoms now, it’s never too early or too late to think about your bladder and bowel health. Whole Grain of the Month: Chia Seeds Chia seeds come from the plant Salvia hispanica L., and were at one time a major food crop in Mexico and Guatemala.

According to industry reports, the chia seed market is projected to reach more than $2 billion US Dollars in sales by 2022.

Two tablespoons of chia seeds (1 ounce) contains about 140 calories, 4 grams of protein, 11 grams of fiber, 7 grams of unsaturated fat, 18% Recommended Daily Amount for calcium, and trace minerals including zinc and copper.

Talk about nutrient packed! They are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Chia seeds like quinoa, are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body.

Chia seeds are a highly versatile ingredient and have little if any distinctive flavor, so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t compete with other flavors in a dish. They also soften in the presence of liquid and become a less detectable texture.

Sprinkle a few teaspoons into breakfast cereal (hot or cold) salads, soups, or stews.

Stir into salad dressings, sauces, marinades, or cake/muffin/bread batter. Use chia gel as a thickener and add to smoothies, puddings, and soups (stir the gel into these foods after they are prepped or cooked).

Because they quickly swell after absorbing liquid, it is advised to eat chia seeds that have already been soaked in liquid or are served with a moist food, such as a smoothie, oatmeal or yogurt. Do not eat dry chia seeds by themselves.

More Herbs, Less Salt When someone men%ons increasing an%oxidant intake we tend to think about blueberries, cranberries, and wine.

However, herbs are a great source of an%oxidants while providing delicious ďŹ&#x201A;avor in a small serving! Just ½ teaspoon of ground cloves is thought to have as much an%oxidants as ½ cup of blueberries.

An%oxidants are compounds that help ďŹ ght damage from harmful free radicals in the body. The buildup of free radicals has been linked to chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Herbs and spices are a great way to reduce sodium intake while preparing food. Studies have shown that high sodium intake is associated with a greater risk factor for heart failure, stroke, especially in those over age 55.

Herbs can be divided into two main categories; tender herbs and woody herbs.

Woody herbs tend to be cooked longer than tender herbs that are usually used as garnish. They include lavender, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme. Woody herbs are used in similar ways to tender herbs but can infuse a dis%nct ďŹ&#x201A;avor in food through extended cooking.

Tender herbs include basil, chives, cilantro, dill, mint, and parsley.

You can get half the ingredients right out of your herb garden or farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; market. It can also be used on wraps or as a dip for fresh veggies.

Green Goddess Dressing ž cup plain yogurt Ÿ cup milk ½ cup parsley fresh ½ cup green onions white and green parts ½ cup basil fresh 1 clove garlic crushed or minced 2 tablespoons lemon juice ½ teaspoon salt Puree together in a blender.

Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 4 or 5 days.

Shake before use.

Easy Caprese Salad

Cut fresh tomato or cherry tomatoes 2-4 oz. fresh Mozzarella Cheese Basil leaves, fresh or dried 1-2 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil ½ to 1 Tbsp. Balsamic Vinegar or Glaze Toss together tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil leaves. Add olive oil and lightly toss together.

Drizzle the balsamic vinegar over salad greens or as a dip for vegetables. Discard after 3 days.

Easy Oregano Chicken 2 Tbsp. butter, melted 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp. reduced sodium soy sauce 1 tsp. dried oregano 2 Tbsp. Fresh oregano ½ tsp. garlic powder 2 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves Preheat oven to 375° Combine melted butter, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, oregano and garlic powder. Mix well. Place chicken in ungreased baking dish. Pour the butter/oregano mixture over the chicken. Bake for 15 minutes, baste juices over chicken. Bake 15 minutes more.

Yogurt Dill Chicken 2-3 cups cooked diced chicken 2/3 cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla) 1/4 cup mayonnaise 2 large shallots, minced 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh dill Salt and pepper to taste Whisk yogurt & mayonnaise, toss with the chicken.

Mix in shallots, dill, salt and pepper. Can add grapes, celery, nuts or seeds to boost nutrients.

Refrigerate for at least an hour. Will keep up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Serve on a bed of greens, make a sandwich, put in a tomato or avocado...enjoy!

Basil has a dis%nct aroma and is o<en associated with Mediterranean cooking. Basil is the most common, but there are other varie%es of basil including lemon, cinnamon, and Thai. This member of the mint family has been used as a medicinal plant, and its oils and extracts are said to have an%oxidant and an%bacterial proper%es. Fragrant fresh basil, for instance, oďŹ&#x20AC;ers a healthy dose of bloodͲclo@ng vitamin K. 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh basil provide 27% of the RDA ͲͲas well as vitamin A, manganese, and magnesium.

Dill is a feathery green herb that packs a lot of ďŹ&#x201A;avor. Most of us think of dill being used in pickles but is great is eggs and green salads or creamy salads. It's an annual herb that tends to replant itself and spread widely, which is good to know if you're considering plan%ng it in your garden.

Oregano has a hint of sweetness and adds warmth and ďŹ&#x201A;avor to foods. It can be found fresh, dried or as an oil. Oregano is rich in an%oxidants. To get a double beneďŹ t, add oregano to other highͲan%oxidant foods like fruits and vegetables. Just one teaspoon of dried oregano can fulďŹ ll about 8% of your daily vitamin K needs. Try mixing whole oregano leaves into other greens for a nutrientͲpacked salad or sprinkling leaves into chili, soups or stews. You can also use it to make fresh pesto or salad dressing, season meat dishes or kick up the ďŹ&#x201A;avor of homemade sauces.

Every year near the end of July, you’ll no%ce news pieces about the anniversary of the Americans with Disabili%es Act and how far we’ve come toward access for and inclusion of the one out of five Americans who has a disability. I’d like to highlight three things in the Chippewa Valley that give me hope for the good life being open to all.

A year ago, Lake Street United Methodist Church hosted the first monthly Ecumenical Inclusive Ministry (IM) Church for people with cogni%ve disabili%es, their friends and families. Each month a different church or ecumenical team organizes and delivers a Sunday school/cra< ac%vity, a worship service and a fellowship meal. The aNendance is about fi<y when you count par%cipants and the team in charge that month. I no%ce singing and the fellowship supper are the most popular parts of the event. The service occurs the third Sunday each month 3:00 Ͳ 4:30 pm. The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library has purchased a braille printer. This printer is the first of its kind in a Wisconsin public library. Some uses for the printer include: prin%ng legal documents, leNers, gree%ng cards, recipes, direc%ons for appliances, games, projects, magazine and newspaper ar%cles, as well as public mee%ng agendas and minutes, just to name a few. Customers wan%ng to have a document printed can email their document in either Word or PDF format to: annaz@eauclaire.lib.wi.us. There is a 10 page limit per document and customers are limited to one request per week.

Erickson Park at Glen Lock in Chippewa Falls opened an accessible area recently. Erickson Park has accessible fishing docks, kayak launch, bathrooms, pavilions, walk ways and picnic areas and will connect to Irvin Park via an accessible foot bridge.

Access to Health Care The MISSION Act strengthens the VA’s ability to deliver trusted, easy to access, high quality care at VA facilities, and in your community.

Following is a quick overview of the Mission Act and its components: Community Care and Urgent Care The Mission Act officially began June 6, 2019 and replaced the old choice program.

Community Care Program – A key part of the Mission Act is the Community Care Program that allows Veterans to receive care from a provider in the local community if specific criteria are met. Generally, Veterans must be enrolled with the VA to receive care and the VA must authorize your local community care before you receive it. Under the Mission Act, eligibility criteria for community care including: x

Drive Times. A driving time of more than 30 minutes to access a VA primary care or mental health provider and more than 60 minutes drive time to access a VA specialty care provider.

•

Wait Times. A wait time of 20 days or more for primary care and 28 days or more for specialty care would allow a veteran to utilize the community care program with approval from the VA.

•

The specific care you need is not available within designated access standards

•

You and your referring clinician decide it is in your best medical interest to receive care you need in the community.

Urgent Care – Is a new benefit that allows Veterans to go to a community care network provider for an injury or illness that requires attention quickly but is not life threatening. For Urgent Care there is no 30- or 60-minute drive time criteria and you do not need a VA approval/referral before utilizing.

However, the Veteran must utilize a local provider that has joined the community provider network. Employee Spotlight Linda Struck, ADRC Director I’m relatively new in my position as ADRC Director, only five months in, however I’m not new to Eau Claire County. Prior to working at the ADRC, I worked as an Administrator for Eau Claire County Dept of Human Services for eighteen years. I absolutely love my new job!

I find being the director of ADRC is as much challenging as it is rewarding. I enjoy working with a diverse population and the staff at the ADRC are “top notch.”

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I am married and have two sons, 20 and 16 years old.

During the summer months I mostly enjoy kayaking. We are so fortunate to have an abundance of scenic rivers and lakes surrounding the Chippewa Valley. It’s a very relaxing way to spend a beautiful summer day in Wisconsin.

Living Well with Dementia By Russell Martoccio ॺ Living with Change

I hope you are enjoying these long, warm and sunny days! This year, summer came slowly to Northern Wisconsin and because June was rainy and cold, it seemed to have started in July. But summer has settled down now with gardens in full bloom and fields planted. I am grateful to be able to enjoy the outdoors, walking country roads and noticing the "small blessings" that I would have never seen if I was driving through the farm country at any rate of speed. As you get older everything seems to slow down, but beauty abounds all around us!

I may be suffering from memory loss, but I still have a life! A life to be enjoyed with grace and dignity. After all, these are my bonus years and I make a special emphasis to try and live each day to the fullest, always being grateful for what I still have, while trying not to focus on what I have lost. Speaking of loss... I would like to pay tribute to Sir Winston, my King Charles Cavalier puppy. I recently gifted Winston to a family in the Chicago area. I could no longer take care of Winston because of my physical condition. Winston is happy now and is loved by two beautiful children who just adore him. Our time together was filled with unconditional love and affection.

I knew in the back of my mind that adopting Winston would be a stretch for me to properly care for him. I tried... and gave him all the love I had. I now realize how much he touched my heart and will always be grateful for our time together. Participating in the ADRC memory support groups have benefited me tremendously. I enjoy the comradery and the moral support that my peers offer to me. It is a freedom to be able to talk openly about my current struggles to friends that understand what I am going through and understand the language of the heart.

Many Seniors Will be Unable to Afford Housing and Health Care by 2029 Source: GWAAR Legal Services Team

More than half of U.S. seniors considered “middle income” will be unable to afford needed assisted living and other forms of senior housing a decade from now. This is according to new research published in the May issue of the Health Affairs journal. The authors define middle-income seniors as people unlikely to qualify for Medicaid long-term care without first spending down their assets, but unable to afford the current housing product offerings for seniors. The study shows a critical void in future U.S. housing needs for seniors at a time when more than 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 each day.

Over the past four decades the market for senior housing and care has greatly expanded. This was done to accommodate people with more complex health needs.

Sixty percent of this group is projected to have mobility limitations and 20 percent will have high health care and functional needs. As a result, many of these seniors will likely need the level of care provided in senior housing, such as assisted living and independent living communities, but the study projects about 54 percent of middle-class seniors will be unable to afford the type of senior housing they may need.

To date, resources have been focused on groups other than middle-class seniors. Private senior housing developers have built ritzy complexes aimed at high-income people with high rents to match said lead researcher Caroline Pearson. Meanwhile, for lower-income people, government provides housing and care services but solely via means-tested programs such as Medicaid. Neither the private sector nor government programs have addressed the needs of those seniors who lack enough saved for a deluxe retirement home but have saved enough that they do not qualify for Medicaid, the experts explained. "Many of these folks are stuck in that gap in the middle, and right now the only answer for many of them will be to spend down as fast as you can to qualify for Medicaid," said Robert Kramer, founder and strategic advisor of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care, the group that helped fund the study.

At the same time, if all middle-income seniors qualified for Medicaid, it would severely strain the resources of the program. If future middle-income seniors avail themselves of the Medicaid program, it would blow a financial hole in the Medicaid program, Pearson said. "You could explode the cost of Medicaid by having lots more people enroll" she added.

Wisconsin's SeniorCare Program Extended For 10 Years!

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) granted the Department of Health Services (DHS) a 10-year extension for the SeniorCare Prescription Drug Assistance Program.

SeniorCare covers most generic and brand name prescription medications and over-the-counter insulin. There is a $30 annual enrollment fee, income-based deductibles and copayments of $5 for generic drugs and $15 for brand-name drugs.

Summer Swim Series: Swimming for Life

Swimming is a great sport that you can par cipate in all of your life. No ma er what your skill level, US Masters Swimming offers the opportunity for camaraderie, friendly compe on and fun. They offer workouts and ar cles geared toward adults of all ages and abili es.

Members include a wide range of individuals including Olympic gold medalists, adults with disabili es, men and women in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and beyond.

Local US Masters Swimming Commi ees (LMSC) provide Carol Reinke on the medal podium: 2019 Senior Games organized training and support within your state or area. Joining a local US Masters Swimming club and a ending swimming events can be an exci ng chance to meet interes ng people who use swimming as an outlet to stay healthy and socially connected.

Carol Reinke is a member of US Masters Swimming and a Na onal Champion in her age group. Carol grew up in the Green Bay area where she par cipated in local YMCA swim teams. Throughout her life there were breaks in her swimming ac vity. Once she had more me, she joined the US Masters Swimming group, which provided a way for her to train with others and compete. Returning to swimming was life changing for Carol. Despite obstacles life inevitably brings, Carol encourages others to, “Head to the pool! It’s the best ʹ it makes you feel alive!”

One of the compe ons Carol par cipated in this summer was the 2019 Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

She placed in five different events, including first place in the 100 yard breast stroke, for her age category. Aside from all of her many accomplishments, Carol encourages everyone to swim, no ma er what their skill level, age or disability. “I wish I could tell everybody to try to get into swimming. It’s one thing you can do your whole life!”

Boost Your Brain and Memory Class is a unique program that takes on a holistic approach to improving brain health in older adults.
