Each year in April, individuals and organizations celebrate National Volunteer Month in honor of the important impact volunteers have in our communities and for our organization. Without the support of over 160 active volunteers, the Aging and Disability Resource Center would not be able to provide the wonderful services such as Health Promotion & Prevention Programs, Dementia Cafes, and Meals on Wheels, just to name a few. In 2021 alone we had almost 13,000 hours volunteered to our many programs.

12,000 of those were strictly for our Meals on Wheels program.

Clearly our programs would not function well without the support of our local community and the hearts of our volunteers that work diligently every day.

In 2021 the Independent Sector announced that the latest value of a volunteer hour is $28.54. Equating a savings to just the ADRC of $371,020 because of the dedication of our volunteers.

There is not a THANK YOU big enough for every person who has dedicated any time to the Aging & Disability Resource Center Programs, including the Meals on Wheels Program. We are grateful to each one of you and are thankful for all that you do.

Aging & Disability Resource Center Service Spotlight: What is a Disability Benefit Specialist?

Disability benefit specialists (DBS) help answer questions and solve problems related to Social Security, Medicare, health insurance, and other public and private benefits for people with disabilities. They serve people ages 18-59 who have a disability.

Services are free and confidential.

Provides accurate information on public and private benefits and programs Helps determine which benefits and programs you may be entitled Helps you fill out applications for benefits, programs and services Talks with you about your choices and the programs or cervices that might best meet your needs Provides assistance in obtaining or retaining benefits and services Provides referrals, assistance and supports including disability rights, and the impact of earning on financial eligibility for public benefits.

In some cases, you may receive representation in formal appeals related to denials of eligibility, termination of benefits or overpayment of public and private benefits.

Meals on Wheels is in search of volunteers!

The Meals on Wheels program is crucial to our homebound individuals in Eau Claire County and we rely on many volunteers to ensure timely delivery.

We are recruiting for volunteers who are willing to deliver on a regular basis, or to substitute as needed.

Convenient pick-up locations all around town with varied pick-up times for meals. No assembly required, only delivering a hot nutritious lunchtime meal to homebound individuals who need them! A fun and easy activity to do alone, or with co-workers, friends or family!

Transportation Corner: Ride Options for Medical Appointments Last year, we asked for public input on services that could help adults in our community as they age. We heard many responses about transportation options for older adults or adults with disabilities to travel to medical appointments. This month we are highlighting non-emergency medical transportation for individuals that have Medicaid, BadgerCare Plus, or another program that uses a ForwardHealth card.

The service provider for the non-emergency medical transportation is Veyo.

Depending on the individual’s needs, there are three options when using Veyo.

To receive money for gas mileage: • •

Before your appointment, call Veyo and ask for trip logs to be mailed to you. You can also download the trip logs from wi.ridewithveyo.com.

At the appointment, ask a doctor, nurse or the front desk staff to sign your trip log. You can also include a trip to the pharmacy on your trip log.

Send trip log to Veyo within 60 days. There are three ways to submit!

1. Mail: Veyo, Attention: Mileage Reimbursement, 8383 Greenway Blvd, Suite 400, Middleton WI 53562 2. Fax: 1-888-512-2085 3. Or submit online at wi.ridewithveyo.com. Click on Mileage Reimbursement at the top of the page.

There are two ways to receive the money: you can choose to receive a check or to have direct deposit into your bank account.

To get a ride or a bus ticket: 1. Call Veyo at least 2 business days before your appointment. It is best to call as soon as you make your appointment.

2. Listen to the phone message and press 1 for members. To schedule a new trip press 1 again. Tell them you need a way to get to your appointment.

3. Have the following information ready for your phone call: Your ForwardHealth #, your appointment date and time, and the clinic name, phone number and address.

Veyo will determine if you are to receive a bus ticket or a ride.

Driver License Invisible Disability By the GWAAR Legal Services Team (for reprint) When a police officer pulls over a vehicle, it is routine for the officer to run the driver’s license or plate to see information about the person’s vehicle, driving history, and criminal record. Sometimes, however, the driver may be capable of driving but have certain medical conditions or behaviors that could be misinterpreted by police. These conditions, in turn, could put the driver in danger.

For example, conditions could make the driver more anxious, agitated, or cause difficulty communicating. Effective January 1, 2019, an applicant for a Wisconsin driver license, identification (ID) card and/or vehicle registration can choose to disclose on these documents that they have a disability that may not be immediately apparent to another person.

These conditions include the following: • • • • • •

Appears deaf or unable to understand; Has difficulty speaking or communicating; Engages in repetitive or self-stimulating behaviors such as rocking or hand flapping; Appears anxious, nervous, or upset; Becomes agitated due to physical contact or stressful situations; Acts indifferent or unresponsive; and Other

A person can complete the Invisible Disability Disclosure form MV2167 to make such a disclosure and send it to the address on the form or present it to their local DMV Service Center. The disclosure will be available so that when officers run driver license and plate information they will also be alerted to the invisible disability. An invisible disability disclosure is completely voluntary, and a person can remove information about their invisible disability at any time by using the same form MV2167. CARETAKER CORNER

The Repetitive Question Caretakers of a person with dementia sometimes are irritated by the person asking the same question over and over. And over again. Both the question and answer are forgotten almost immediately. Even so, the reason for the question has remained in the person’s mind. We must figure out what triggered it.

When memory is lost the ability to express a thought is compromised. The person affected then learns to communicate with a new language and the repetitive question is part of that. The question will have an underlying need that needs to be discovered and answered. The question might be, for instance, “When do we eat?” Sometimes a successful response is to suggest the person help with the meal preparation. Setting the table, for instance, or folding napkins. Whatever level of ability remains is put to use and the question is deferred. Maybe the person is hungry and a snack will suffice. A common question, one my wife asked occasionally was, “When are we going home.” The home she referred to was her childhood home on the farm. I was careful to never say we can’t go, but suggested we get ready to go or take a nap first. Whatever her present need was, she knew it would be met at “home”. When a person asks repeatedly, “When is Mother coming?” ask what the person wanted to say to Mother. Or, look at some pictures of her and avoid a definite answer.

Mother may have been deceased a long time but it’s not a good idea to say that. Try to discover the desired interaction with Mother. Caretaker's irritation, frustration and finally, anger are often the result of the repetitive question. Then it is time to take a break, ask someone to help for an hour or so and get away for a cup of coffee. The county ADRC can help with suggestions and counseling.

ADRC ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM Adaptive Equipment can make everyday tasks easier and safer!

The ADRC Loan Closet allows individuals to borrow devices for up to three months. This allows a person see if it works well and have time to find a permanent solution.

We request a small non-refundable contribution, ($5 or $10 depending on the item). This can be waived in cases of hardship. Items in the loan closet include wheelchairs, walkers, canes, lighted magnifiers, large playing cards for those with visual impairment, shower chairs, bed transfer rails, and much more!

CAR CADDIE A car caddie provides just the support seniors need in getting in and out of the car. This durable, nylon strap handle installs and removes within seconds on any framed vehicle window. Simply roll down the window, put the end of the Car Caddie strap around the top of the window frame, snap the buckle in place, adjust the handle height, roll up the window, and that's it!

CANES If you use a cane, make sure to replace a worn cane tip to avoid slipping on ice. If you do not have a cane and would like rent one, our loan closet has singular, 4prong, and sit-to-stand canes available.

LARGE BUTTON PHONE Fight winter depression with a large button phone. This telephone is perfect for individuals who have vision impairment or hand disabilities. This phone makes it visibly easier to make calls to family and friends.

Our adaptive equipment loan program offers a way to try out equipment for a short period of time. Whether you are thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, or needing something for a short amount of time, the loan program can be a useful service that is quick and easy to use. All adaptive equipment items can be borrowed up to three months for a small contribution fee. See staff in case of financial hardship.

Two Wisconsin curlers competed at the March 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing Two athletes represented Wisconsin in Beijing, this time for the 2022 Paralympic Games.

Weston resident Matthew Thums and Suamico resident David Samsa both competed as members of the wheelchair curling team. Thums is the team skip and Samsa throws second. Both are first-time Paralympians, but have spent years developing their talent and passion for curling.

ADRC Prevention and Health Promotion Workshops Stand Up & Move More (telephone conference) The couch may be comfy, but spending too much time sitting is bad for your health. Time to Stand Up & Move More! Research shows that excessive sedentary behavior (or 'sitting time') has been linked to serious health consequences. The Stand Up & Move More program gives you strategies to do just that - stand up and move more! The program is designed specifically for older adults who sit more than six hours per day. You’ll learn in a group with peers and help each other identify strategies to stand up more often and for longer periods of time throughout the day. Stand Up has been researched and proven to reduce sitting time by 68 minutes per day.

Stepping On (in person) can help you avoid a dangerous and costly fall so you can keep doing the things you love to do. In just 7 weeks, you will learn: Strength and balance exercises you can adapt to your individual level. To identify and remove or avoid fall hazards both inside and outside your home. How vision, hearing, medication, and footwear affect your risk of falling. To get back on your feet the right way if you do fall.

Healthy Living with Diabetes (in person) Designed for adults of all ages who have type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, or who live with someone who does. Learn how to manage the condition through 14 self-management tools. Topics include healthy eating and nutrition: food label reading and meal planning, relaxation techniques, fitness for exercise and fun, feedback and problem-solving, stress and depression management, short-term goal setting, communicating with friends, family, and your medical team. Meets weekly for 6 weeks, plus optional class with a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.

Do you have a vehicle that needs modifications for accessibility? Are you short on the funds to pay for the work to be completed? Contact the ADRC at 715 -839-4735, we may be able to help pay for those modifications.

The Vehicle Modification Grant has money available, up to $10,000, to make a vehicle accessible for caregivers, adults over the age of 60 or adults (18-59) that have a disability. This may also help with the purchase of a new/used modified vehicle. Applications are reviewed and granted based on funding availability. Must be an Eau Claire County Resident to qualify Examples of possible modifications: lifts, ramps, left foot accelerator, right hand turn signal, modifiedeffort steering, swivel seat…and so much more!
