Without the support of nearly 150 ac%ve volunteers, the Aging and Disability Resource Center would not be able to provide the wonderful services such as Health Promo%on & Preven%on Programs, Demen%a Cafes , Hoarding Task Force, ADRC Office support and Meals on Wheels just to name a few.

In 2019 alone almost 14,000 hours were volunteered to our many programs. 11,000 of those were strictly for the Meals on Wheels program. Clearly these programs would not func%on well without the support of our local community and the hearts of hundreds of volunteers that work diligently every day.

Currently about 63 million Americans volunteer about 8 billion hours of their %me, talent and effort to improve their communi%es. Contribu%ng to approximately $203.4 billion to our na%on through nonprofit organiza%ons of all types. In 2019 the Independent Sector announced that the latest value of a volunteer hour is $25.43, up 3% from the previous year. Equa%ng a savings to just the ADRC of $343,864 because of the dedica%on of volunteers.

There is not a THANK YOU big enough for every person who has dedicated any %me to the Aging & Disability Resource Center and Meals on Wheels Program. We are grateful to each one of you and are grateful for all that you do. You are what make Meals on Wheels possible.

7 As a former Hospice Chaplain, I've witnessed families struggle with burnout and fa%gue, and yet oJen hear friends and extended family say,

"If there is anything I can do...." Share the Care can give you the tools to help prevent the psychological, physical and emo%onal burnout that can come with caregiving. It can assist you as you accept help from those who might not otherwise take an ac%ve role in caregiving. On

their website, www.sharethecare.org you can read accounts of caregiving success stories and download forms that help you organize and coordinate a group of caregivers.

I recently was humbled and honored to be asked to serve as a coͲcaptain of a Share the Care group of friends who agreed to care for our friend, whom I will call "D". When I visited D in early December, it was clear to me that she was quite ill. She was fa%gued and unable to climb the stairs to her bedroom in her home. She wished for no further treatment and I encouraged her to request a referral to Hospice from her Doctor. Much to my surprise, she was unaware that Hospice is a benefit provided by Medicare. There are specific criteria of admission that must be met, however, it seemed quite evident that she met those criteria. I recognized that she needed the support of that system of care so that she could have the best quality of life as possible.

D's wishes were to stay at home, to be able to make her own decisions, and to help her family know that she was where she wanted to be and was cared for as she wanted to be. D was a very strong and selfͲsufficient individual. It wasn't easy for her to accept help from friends. However, she provided a list of those friends she trusted and that she would feel comfortable caring for her.

D's friends met as a group and agreed to take on the tasks of caregiving. Some of her neighbors were already bringing her the mail and newspaper. As her strength and stamina decreased, we realized that we were commiMng to mee%ng D's goal of dying in her own home.

Hospice admission was completed, and each %me the Hospice nurse visited, one of the coͲcaptains would aNend to ensure that the en%re Share the Care team was aware of changes in D's needs.

Together we coordinated scheduling people for shiJs so that no one would be stretched too thin. It wasn't easy, but it was a labor of love and respect for this woman who meant so much to each of us. Her children were able to come from out of state to visit her, and to witness the power of the Share the Care team's commitment to caring for D. They were apprecia%ve to know that their mother was receiving care and aNen%on and that they could rest assured that their mother's wishes were being respected and valued. Between Hospice, the Share the Care team of friends, and her family we were able to work together to provide the care that D needed.

I firmly believe in the strength of this model of caregiving and have seen it be very effec%ve in bringing people together, in strengthening community bonds and providing much needed respite for families who are struggling to care for those they love.

Living Well with Demen a ▪ By Russell Martoccio ▪ The Advent of Spring

There is a certain light in spring that is not present at any other %me of the year. The natural cycles of seasonal change are evident everywhere I look. A great thaw is taking place and the earth is ready to burst forth in all its beauty. I find myself coming alive, almost as if I have been hiberna%ng, stuck in the doldrums of a long, dark winter. But alas, spring is here to bring us comfort, to sustain us and give us hope. The hope of renewal and growth of a new season makes me feel grateful to be alive and to be able to enjoy spring%me!

SiMng outside the other day watching the birds come to the feeder, I no%ced a slight %nt of yellow in the male goldfinches. Beau%ful! They have survived the long cold winter and are expressing their joy through song saying, “I’m just happy to be here in this moment.” This is something I want to emulate in my new life with demen%a.

Just make an effort to enjoy the simple things of life on a daily basis. Keeping things simple is a blessing that demen%a has given me. It has opened my heart to be able to enjoy each minute that God has given to me.

There is a certain ebb and flow to this disease. I have good days and bad, but it really doesn't maNer because I have accepted that this is my new normal. Yet underneath this fog of memory loss the molten streams of life s%ll bubble. I am s%ll very much alive...it’s not the end but the beginning of a new journey, a new future. I am proceeding down this path one day at a %me.

Always remember that “This the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

When one begins caring for a spouse or parent, a caregiving team is a necessary complement to a loved one’s plan of care. Use these five steps to build your team.

Draft a List of Prospective Team Members.

Family members, friends or neighbors that you and your loved one interact with on a regular basis.

Assess Each Individual’s Strengths.

Factor in each person’s attitude before asking them to join your team.

Create Your All-Star Care Team.

Create a foolproof roster of people who will assist you with hands-on care and day-to-day tasks. Do not include anyone who may make your duties more difficult.

Assign Roles for Each Member.

Once you have narrowed down your list to reliable, positive individuals, identify specific caregiving tasks and gaps in your care plan that would be a good fit for each one.

April 1 is Census Day, the reference day for ques%ons on the 2020 count. Census results play a crucial part in determining how government en%%es allocate hundreds of billions of dollars each year for services on which communi%es rely. But certain groups of people historically have been undercounted in the census. We want to make sure that the people NLS and its network libraries serveͶ people who are blind or visually impaired, or who have a disability that makes reading regular print difficultͶare aware of, and par%cipate in, the 2020 census.

For the first %me, households will have three ways to respond: online, by calling a tollͲfree number, or by mail.

The ques%onnaire takes less %me to complete than drinking a cup of coffee. In midͲApril, census workers will begin visi%ng homes that haven’t responded to collect informa%on in person.

Eating Right on a Budget Cook more, eat out less Eating out can be expensive, and many foods can be prepared for a lot less money (and healthier) at home. Pre-packaged foods, like frozen dinners and packaged pasta or rice mixes can also add up when you calculate the cost per serving.

Plan what you’re going to eat Deciding on meals and snacks before you shop can save both time and money. Review recipes and make a grocery list of what ingredients are needed, then check to see what foods you already have and make a list for what you still need to buy.

Decide how much to make or buy Making a large batch by doubling a recipe will save time in the kitchen later on. Extra portions can be used for lunches or meals later in the week, or frozen as leftovers in individual containers for future use. Plus, purchasing ingredients in bulk is almost always cheaper.

Determine where to shop Check the newspaper, online and at the store for sales and coupons. Compare prices of different brands and sizes of the same brand to see which has a lower unit price. The unit price is usually located on the shelf directly below the product.

Quench your thirst with water Water from the tap is a low cost way to stay hydrated. Substituting plain water in place of sweetened beverages can not only save you money but also help you reduce extra calories from added sugars.

Shop for foods in season Fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually easier to get and may be a lot less expensive. Canned produce are also good options and may be more affordable at certain times of the year. Look for fruit that is canned in 100% juice or water and canned vegetables that are labeled "low in sodium" or "no salt added".

Watch portion sizes Eating too much of even lower cost foods and beverages can add up to extra dollars and calories.

Use smaller plates, bowls and glasses to help keep portions under control. Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables and the other half with grains and lean meat, poultry, seafood or beans.

Focus on nutritious, low-cost foods Certain foods tend to be less expensive, so you can make the most of your food dollars by finding recipes that use the Following ingredients: beans, peas, and lentils; sweet or white potatoes; eggs; peanut butter; canned salmon, tuna or crabmeat; grains such as oats, brown rice, barley or quinoa; and frozen or canned fruits and vegetables.

Make your own healthy snacks Convenience costs money, so many snacks, even healthy ones, usually cost more when sold individually. Make your own snacks by purchasing large tubs of low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese and dividing them into smaller containers. For trail mix, combine unsalted nuts, dried fruit and whole grain pretzels or cereal; store small portions in airtight containers. Air-popped popcorn and whole fresh fruits in season also tend to cost less compared to pre-packaged items.

Start a garden or visit a Farmer's Market A garden can be a lot of fun, especially for kids, and an affordable way to eat more fruits and vegetables. Plants can be started from seed or purchased at a low price. Another way to increase your family’s variety of produce is to visit a farmer’s market.

The Handybar by Avin, provides all of those func%ons in one easy to use tool.

1. Support to get out of a vehicle. Handybars fit in almost any door latch and require no vehicle modifica%on. Just place the metal end of the Handybar in the latch un%l snug. The bar can support up to 350 pounds of pressure. Once inside the vehicle simply place Handybar on the floor or seat inside the vehicle.

2. Break a window in an emergency. The metal end also acts as a tool to break a window, if needed in an emergency. Take hold of the handle, face away from the window and strike with the pointed end of the tool.
