1. Reading over your current plan’s Annual No ce of Change documents ʹ your plan will let you know of changes; if you do nothing during open enrollment, you will remain in the same plan for 2021.

2. Use the Medicare.gov Plan Finder tool; find the least expensive plan for 2021 based on your personalized drug list. (new plan informa"on should be on the plan finder by October 2020).

3. Ask for Help. For assistance reviewing your plan, call the ADRC at 715Ͳ839Ͳ4735 to schedule a virtual appointment by video or phone star"ng Monday September 28, 2020. Appointments are limited.

The Wisconsin Disability Vote Coali,on encourages voters to vote absentee November 3 because of concerns about CovidͲ19. Some voters with disabili,es prefer vo,ng absentee because of difficulty ge5ng transporta,on to the polls, accessibility concerns, or other reasons. Note: Wisconsin does not currently have a screen reader accessible absentee ballot.

Who can request an Absentee Ballot? Any registered Wisconsin voter is eligible to request an absentee ballot. Your name and address must be current on your

voter registra,on. Special provisions are made for hospitalized electors and sequestered jurors to request and vote by absentee ballot on elec,on day. Contact your municipal clerk for assistance.

If you are not already registered, you will need to register to vote before an absentee ballot can be sent to you. You may register online at myvote.wi.gov/enͲus/ RegisterToVote, by mail, in person at your municipal clerk’s office, or at your polling place on elec on day. To register online, you need a Wisconsin driver’s license or Wisconsin ID Card. Don’t have a valid Wisconsin State ID or Driver License? Complete a registra,on form. Mail it to your clerk with a Proof of Residence document with your name and current address, such as a u,lity bill, or bank statement. Deadlines: If you are registering by mail or online, you must register at least 20 days before the elec,on (October 14 for the November 3 elec,on).

AIer this deadline, you can register at your clerk’s office or at your polling place on Elec,on Day. Deadline to request an absentee ballot for November 3rd elec ons October 29th at 5 PM for regular voters October 30th at 5 PM for Indefinitely Confined voters. Although this is the legal deadline, make your request as soon as possible. AIer October 20th, there may not be enough ,me to receive and return your ballot by mail. Accommoda ons: If a voter needs an accommoda,on, such as a large print ballot, include that informa,on on the absentee request or contact your clerk as soon as possible.

Voters who live in a Care Facility If voter lives in a care facility such as a nursing home or group home, and does not have an acceptable photo ID, the care facility administrator can sign a special cer,ficate (ELͲ122sp) to verify the voter’s iden,ty. This cer,ficate is available for download on the WI Elec,ons Commission website at elec,ons.wi.gov/forms/elͲ122. Or the resident may cer,fy they are an “indefinitely confined” voter.

Returning Your Absentee Ballot Your completed absentee ballot must be received in ,me to be delivered to your polling place no later than 8 PM on Elec,on Day. • By Mail: The U.S. Postal Service recommends absentee ballots be mailed at least one week before Elec,on Day to arrive in ,me. If within a week of the elec,on, the US mail may not get your ballot there in ,me.

• You can drop off your ballot at your clerk’s office or an absentee ballot dropbox if available. Drop box loca,ons may be listed on myvote.wi.gov/.

Changes to Adaptive Equipment Loan Program Due to COVID 19, the Adaptive Equipment Loan Program offers curbside drop off and pick up only.

One of the great and unique services the Eau Claire County Aging & Disability Resource Center provides is the Adaptive Equipment Loan Program. This program offers a way to rent adaptive equipment such as a walker, cane, wheelchair, etc. for up to three months. If you are needing adaptive equipment for a temporary amount of time or thinking about purchasing an item but want to try it out first, check out the ADRC loan program.

Living Well with Demen!a

Hope and Courage

During these trying ,mes, those of us who suffer from demen,a must find ways to find hope and courage to cope in our daily lives or else feelings of fu,lity and despair will overcome us and all will grow dark. I always try to remember this familiar adage “There is a crack in everything which allows the light to get in.” At ,mes I do feel terrified and discouraged, but I trust in the Word that God will show me the light and give to me the strength to carry on in His trust.

Today I am aware that the light is all around me in all the flaming magnificence of autumn. The summer has slowly faded away to hues of auburn, red and bright yellows. The geese are gathering, squirrels and chipmunks are scurrying, and the season's harvest is put up in the barns. All around me there is a sense of welcoming quiet and relief. I breathe in the crisp autumn air and know that nature's cycle is almost complete and soon winter will be se9ling in for its long dura,on.

In my heart and soul I feel so grateful to be alive to witness this change, to cherish this very moment, for nature teaches me that change is part of all life and that I need to con,nue to search for the courage and the wisdom to change the things I s,ll can, even though I am slowly losing my memory from the life I once lived.

That life was when nothing that I wanted ma9ered, though all I wanted was happiness, pure happiness.

Through all the tempests of my life that li9le bird of hope has never leI my heart. Con,nue to have hope to encourage your heart when things look hopeless. Stay well!

Adaptive Equipment Loan Closet Consumers may borrow assistive technology and adaptive equipment for up to three months. Items in the loan closet include walkers, canes, visual aids, bath benches, bed rails and more. If an item isn’t already in Augusta, it can be brought there in a short amount of time.

Driver’s License Renewal for Older Adults

In recogni"on of the con"nuing health risks of COVIDͲ19, the Wisconsin Department of Transporta"on’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has granted drivers over age 60 an addi"onal 60Ͳday extension to renew their driver’s license.

Drivers over age 60 whose license expired a<er March 12, 2020 now have un"l November 23, 2020 to renew their license.

Communica%on is Key By: Jane Mahoney, Older Americans Act Consultant Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources

Communica,on is the key to success in many things: marriage, paren,ng, at work and even planning fun ac,vi,es. When there is a lack of communica,on, things inevitably go wrong. Rela,onships within a caregiving situa,on are no excep,on. Maintaining good communica,on with the person who is being cared for and other family members is the founda,on of a healthy caregiver. There are three keys to good communica,on: speak clearly, listen carefully and respond accurately.

1. Speak Clearly

The first key is to speak clearly. First, when you are speaking it is important that you be specific with your request. Never assume the listener knows what you are thinking or feeling.

Second, try to stay focused and discuss only the issue at hand. We oIen get off track or bring up old issues, especially when strong emo,ons are involved. This can cause confusion and irrita,on.

Third, do your best to speak with tact. Be sensi,ve to the feelings of those listening and be descrip,ve rather than cri,cal. Star,ng sentences with “I feel” or “I am” is less threatening to the listener and prevents the blame game.

2. Listen Carefully

The second key is listening carefully. The first step is to listen without interrup,ng or giving advice. Eliminate all distrac,ons and concentrate on what the speaker is saying. t is best to listen and support the person before offering advice.

Second, listen with empathy. You don’t have to agree with the other point of view to understand it. If you feel you’re being cri,cized, receive it with an open mind and respond only to the facts, not the anger or fear behind it. Third, listen to yourself and the tone with which you speak. Be aware of your body language, stay posi,ve and speak calmly so you don’t put the listener on the defensive.

3. Respond Accurately

The final key to good communica,on is responding accurately. It is important to be certain that you have heard the message correctly. Ask for clarifica,on if there is anything you don’t understand. Restate what you heard to be sure your interpreta,on is accurate. Pay a9en,on to facial expressions, gestures and tone of voice to get a be9er understanding of the message. Even if you don’t agree with what the speaker is saying, it is important to acknowledge that you understand how they are feeling.

With social distancing, much of our communica,on is being done over the phone or by emailing or tex,ng.

This creates addi,onal challenges as you are unable to watch for body language and facial expressions, making it even more important to speak clearly and listen carefully. Try not to read into things and make assump,ons; instead, ask for clarifica,on.

No ma9er what you are trying to accomplish, speaking clearly, listening carefully and responding accurately will help you achieve your goal. For caregivers, it is an essen,al step to a healthy caregiving environment.

No Help Wanted

I don’t need help, said the man. I can take care of her myself.

I know my wife be,er than any outsider. She isn’t that bad yet, said the man. But he was. Refusing help for one of the most arduous, unrelen4ng tasks a person can be compelled to perform is foolish. It is a task so full of tension and pressure that the caregiver some4mes dies before the pa4ent. I meet with men who are caretakers for their wives. One is concerned about a friend who will not admit he needs help caring for his wife. He is urged to get inͲhome assistance, but he is adamant that he is capable. His reason may be price. In the end, it’s not the price but the cost. The caregiver wears away, realizing too late the personal health toll. As the caregiver’s health is affected the spouse with demen4a gets inadequate care, possibly resul4ng in removal to a facility. How sad, when many inͲhome helps and services are available.

As I care for my wife, I use home care twice a week for bathing, laundry, and anything they see that needs doing. I also hire a cleaning lady. What a relief to have her take over laundering and making beds. She does carpets, sani4zes the bathroom and kitchen, and cleans cupboards. All of my helpers do a chore I have come to dread, grocery shopping. We also have the best nextͲdoor neighbor in the world who will sit with my wife occasionally when I have a mee4ng or medical appointment.
