slaves that slavery had been abolished.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is one of the oldest known celebrations commemorating the ending of slavery and enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States. It became an official Texas state holiday in 1979 and is now an officially recognized holiday in forty-seven states and the District of Columbia. In 2022 Juneteenth became a Federal Holiday.

How You Can Observe Juneteenth Attend a local Juneteenth Celebration. People throughout the U.S. celebrate with community gatherings, cookouts, and parades, often sharing readings and oral histories of their ancestors; an honorable way to remember this somber period of American history.

Celebrated annually on June 19th, the holiday’s name is made up of the words ‘June’ and ‘nineteenth’, commemorating the day in 1865 Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to inform

ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT SPOTLIGHT: Handybar Wouldn’t it be helpful to have an extra handle to grip when exiting a vehicle? What if that handle also had the ability to cut a seatbelt, or even break a window in an emergency? The Handybar by Avin, provides all of those functions in one easy to use tool.

Handybar on the floor or seat inside the vehicle. 2. Break a window in an emergency: The metal end also acts as a tool to break a window, if needed in an emergency. Take hold of the handle, face away from the window and strike with the pointed end of the tool. 3. Cut a seatbelt in an emergency: If trapped in a vehicle by the seatbelt, the Handybar can also be used to cut the seatbelt with the sharp cutting edge in the middle of the tool.

1. Support to get out of a vehicle: Handybars fit in almost any door latch and require no vehicle modification. Just place the metal end of the Handybar in the latch until snug. The bar can support up to 350 pounds of pressure. Once inside the vehicle simply place

JUNE IS LGBTQ PRIDE MONTH By the GWAAR Legal Services Team June is LGBTQ Pride Month in the United States. The month of June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969. Pride Day is celebrated on June 28. The day marks the date in history when the first pride march was held in New York City in 1970.

Known as the “Mother of Pride”, Brenda Howard coordinated the first LGBT Pride march and sparked the idea for a week of events around Pride Day. These events then developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held every June.

The term “pride” is used to promote the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) people as opposed to shame, isolation, and social stigma previously felt, and still being felt, by many LGBTQ persons.

In short, sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression each fall on a spectrum and that is why there are so many different identities that people may have. LGBTQ pride is about embracing those identities and allowing people to be themselves and live their lives authentically.

CARETAKER CORNER, By Jim Alf My Turn All my life I have seen old folks move to nursing homes. After being caretaker for my wife who had dementia, I admitted her to a memory facility. Now I have learned first-hand what it feels like to make that move. Last November, with my health failing, I took an efficiency apartment in an Eau Claire assisted living facility. It is the best gift I have ever given myself. To get rid of a condo full of furnishings I engaged a company dedicated to transitions from homes to facilities. They moved the furniture and personal things I kept, then they held an estate sale on

premises. They took a percentage of the sale which covered the cost of the move. What did not sell they donated and disposed of the rest, cleaning out the apartment completely. I didn’t have to touch a thing. Changing addresses was facilitated with help from USPS and a good friend helped me get an Iphone with my old land line number so I did not lose contact because of a number change. Because of limited mobility I appreciate the coziness of the apartment with its pretty kitchenette and roomy closet. Wi-fi is free and cable TV is available for a small fee. I enjoy three wonderful meals in the dining room every day and when I wish to entertain friends in

my apartment, meals are brought for them and myself. Residents who still drive are welcome to have a car parked near the front door. Staff is cheerful, friendly, and accommodating, mostly young students studying to be nurses or hospital administrators. A wonderful activity director keeps us engaged. I am happy here, as are most of the forty some residents, because I decided to be happy. I have kept many friends who visit regularly (think cribbage) and made many new friends. The move was made easier with information from the county Aging and Disability Resource Center, ADRC.

POTENTIAL MEDICAID* BENEFITS CHANGES

June is National Dairy Month, this celebration started as a way to distribute extra milk during the warm months of summer. It was established in 1937 by grocer organizations sponsoring “National Milk Month” and by 1939 became the official “Dairy Month”. The US Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services released guidelines that reinforce the importance of consuming 3 daily servings of dairy food such as milk and cheese. It highlighted these products contain 3 of 4 nutrients that are typically lacking in American diets: calcium, potassium, and Vitamin D. Its nutrients play roles in preventing heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Try this smoothie recipe as a way to add dairy to your diet, try it for a quick breakfast or snack. This can be altered with your favorite kind of yogurt and fruit. Makes: 2 Servings, Prep Time: 5 minutes, Recipe Created by Charlyn Fargo featured in Tennessee Home & Farm. Ingredients: 1 cup vanilla yogurt, 1 cup frozen mixed berries, 1 banana, 1 tablespoon honey, ½ cup ice cubes. Instructions: Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth. *National Dairy Alliance

When the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ends, your Medicaid* benefits may be affected. During the COVID-19 emergency, Wisconsin worked with the federal government to change some of the rules for BadgerCare Plus and Medicaid programs to protect our members’ health and safety. One of those changes has allowed you to keep your coverage without renewing. When the COVID-19 emergency ends, you will need to provide details about your current situation to determine if you still qualify for the Medicaid program you currently have. That time is not here yet, though. You will receive a letter when it is. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: • The public health emergency did not end yet and as of this newsletter printing we do not know when it will end. • For now, you can keep your Medicaid coverage without going through a renewal process. • Our federal partners will tell us in advance before ending the emergency. Once we know for sure that the COVID-19 emergency is ending, you will get a letter about how you’re impacted and what to do to stay insured. 

Open and read your mail. Watch for a letter from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services to find out what you will need to do and when you need to do it. 

Take action when asked. Following the instructions in the letter is important! Our goal is to ensure our members continue to have health insurance when the COVID-19 emergency is over, but we need your help.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW: •
