Do you feel lonely or isolated?

New program offers opportunity for connection.

Individuals can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons.

Some choose to stay home because of the COVID-19 pandemic or other health concerns. Some are no longer the hub of their family; they’ve left the workplace, experienced death of a spouse or friends, or no longer can drive. There are many factors that contribute to social isolation.

Whatever the cause, it’s easy to feel alone, isolated, and vulnerable. Are you feeling this way? According to research published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health social isolation or loneliness in older adults is associated with a: 

50% increased risk of developing dementia, 



30% increased risk of coronary artery disease or stroke,

26% increased risk of all-cause mortality*

Because of these staggering statistics the ADRC of Eau Claire County started a new social isolation program called Connecting Eau Claire. This program pairs a volunteer with an individual in our community for a friendly conversation over the phone. It’s a simple way for someone to spend time connecting with another person, whether talking about days of old, movies, books, current events, or any other topic that comes to mind.

If you or someone you know is experiencing social isolation and could benefit from this program as a participant, please contact the ADRC at 715-839-4735 to be added to our calling list.

Who is eligible for the COVID Booster Shots?

Pfizer-Moderna

• Received both shots at least six months ago • Anyone 65 and older.

• All adults age 18 to 64 who have cancer, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, HIV and other medical conditions that increase their likelihood of Covid complications.

• Anyone 18 or older who live or work in a longterm care facility, homeless shelter and prison or other congregate setting.

Front-line personnel 18 or older who are at a higher risk of Covid exposure due to their job, including first responders, teachers, supermarket staff and mass transit employees.

• All adults who were vaccinated with J&J’s Covid vaccine at least two months ago, instead of six months with Pfizer and Moderna.

All adult J&J recipients are eligible for a booster even if they don’t have underlying medical conditions or work in a profession or live where there’s a higher risk of Covid. ¨ If you haven’t received your first dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine, you may find a vaccine provider by visiting www.vaccines.gov or by calling 211 or 1-877-947-2211.

It’s time for the holidays once again; decorating, shopping, parties, family gatherings, presents, greeting cards…and the list goes on and on. While many people look forward to the hustle and bustle of the season, others see the holidays as a time of stress, chaos and sadness.

People who have experienced changes due to Alzheimer’s, stroke or other medical conditions may feel a great deal of loss during the holidays. Those who are caring for these loved ones may feel overwhelmed by trying to keep up holiday traditions while continuing to provide care. They may also be uncertain about gathering with friends and family for fear the changes in physical health, behavior and personality may make others uncomfortable.

If you are experiencing anxiety over the upcoming holiday season it is important to realize that these feelings are normal, and you are not alone. There are ways

Ask for help.

Involve other family members or friends in your holiday preparations. Not only does this reduce your stress, but it provides you and your loved one with socialization. Write down what needs to be done so you can ask for something specific when people offer to help.

Prepare family and friends before getting together.

Update family and friends on how your loved one has changed and what they can expect during their visit. Offer suggestions on how best to communicate.

Suggest gift ideas.

Give friends and family ideas of useful gifts they can give such as cd’s, photo albums, comfortable clothing, videos or audio books. Don’t forget your own wish list, too! Gift certificates for dining, laundry or cleaning services are great ideas for busy caregivers.

Keep the needs of your loved one in mind.

For those with memory loss, remember that distant memory stays intact the longest and plan activities accordingly, avoiding new games or activities. Many stroke survi-

vors have lost the ability to feed themselves and may find it uncomfortable to eat in front of guests. An afternoon of looking at old slides or photos and reminiscing might be more appropriate than sharing a meal. Schedule gatherings during the day rather than in the evening since symptoms often are worse in the evening.

Be good to yourself.

Make it a priority to care for yourself. Getting away with friends for lunch, a movie or a concert might be just what you need. Or perhaps some time by yourself to read, write in a journal or enjoy a bubble bath is how you recharge. Determine what rejuvenates you and take the time to do it.

Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the holidays add anxiety to your life! Find ways to simplify and enjoy a stress-free holiday season filled with love, joy and good memories! Happy Holidays!

Do you have a vehicle that needs modifications for accessibility? Are you short on the funds to pay for the work to be completed? Contact the ADRC at 715-839-4735, we may be able to help pay for those modifications.

The Vehicle Modification Grant has money available, up to $10,000, to make a vehicle accessible for caregivers, adults over the age of 60 or adults (18-59) that have a disability. This may also help with the purchase of a new or used modified vehicle.

Applications reviewed and granted based on funding availability. Must be an Eau Claire County Resident to qualify. Contact the ADRC for more information or to start your application process.



Caretaker Corner

The Diagnosis A family member is noticeably forgetful, but no one wants to talk about it. It is a sore subject, evoking anger, denial, and conflict. As the disorder worsens a way must be found to get a diagnosis but the “patient” refuses to confront the truth.

When Karen began having memory loss I wanted to bring it up at a doctor’s appointment, but I knew she was super sensitive about the subject. She was taking pain medication, managed by a Nurse Practitioner, so at the next visit I circled around the word dementia asking if the meds could be interfering with Karen’s shortterm memory. Before the visit I told Karen I was going to ask that question, to which she was agreeable.

Bingo. The NP was right on the ball and made an appointment with a neurologist who arrived at a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease.

When her personality changed that information helped me respond with compassion instead of anger.

Denial is common with memory loss but allows the situation to worsen. It’s not often a person with early symptoms of dementia will consent to tests to confirm it, which creates the first of many problems the future caretaker will face. Discovery of truth usually begins in the doctor’s office with a little memory quiz, letting the doctor deliver the information and set a course of action. The caretaker can then be the consoler.

Providing care to a person with dementia is like piloting a jetliner; It helps immensely to be way out front mentally so we can see problems before we get to them. There will always be surprises but I have found being prepared and realistic are vital. And having your county Aging and Disability Resource Center at your back will help with that!

Weather Cancellation Policy With winter just around the corner, we’d like to remind everyone of our policy regarding closures of the Meal on Wheels and Senior Dining Program. Meals on Wheels and Senior Dining Sites may be closed if we have heavy snowfall, extreme temperatures, icy roads, storms/tornado/heavy winds, etc.

If Eau Claire schools are closed due to weather, Meals on Wheels and Senior Dining Sites will also be closed. If Eau Claire schools have a late start, Meals on Wheels will still deliver.

For delivery, we ask that you please have snow and ice removed from entrance and sidewalks so that our volunteers can safely deliver your meal to you.

If your sidewalks are not cleared you run the risk of no delivery.

To check for our closings, you will be able to find them scrolling on the bottom of the TV along with the school closings on your local channels WEAU-TV 13 and WQOW-TV 18. You can also find our closings directly on their websites: www.weau.com and www.wqow.com.

There are many types of squash: butternut, acorn, spaghetti, winter and the list goes on! Squash is a vegetable that can be found almost anywhere throughout the fall and winter season. It has a variety of flavors from sweet, buttery, or earthy and is packed health benefits such vitamin A, potassium and more. Here is a quick way to prepare and make this dish to fit your taste.

Tuesday December 28th: NO EVENING MEAL

Recipe: Seven Minute Squash 2 cups butternut squash, winter squash, cut into 1-inch cubes 3 TBSP extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp orange juice Salt & pepper to taste Fill the bottom of the steamer with 2 inches of water. While steam is building up in steamer, peel & cut squash into 1-inch cubes. Steam covered for 7 minutes.

Squash is done when it is tender, yet still firm enough to hold its shape. Transfer to a bowl. For more flavor mash with the oil, orange juice, salt, and pepper while it is still hot.

Delicious options: Add Feta cheese, chopped fresh rosemary, ½ small onion sliced thin, cooked with the squash. Also try combining 4 tsp finely minced fresh ginger, ½ tsp cinnamon, & 2 tsp honey with the olive oil

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently released consumer advice on avoiding scams related to COVID-19 and vaccines: 

COVID-19 VACCINES ARE FREE. If anyone charges you for help signing up or the shot itself, it’s a scam.

13 Right now, there are no official plans to create a national vaccine verification app, certificate, or passport.



If someone asks you for personal information or money to get a national vaccine certificate or passport, that’s a scam.



Contact your state government about its vaccine verification plans and requirements.



You can’t buy the COVID-19 vaccine anywhere.

It’s only available at federal and state-approved locations.



Check with airlines, cruise lines, and event venues about their vaccine verification or negative testing requirements.



Always talk with your doctor or healthcare professional before you try any product claiming to treat, prevent, or cure COVID-19.



When looking for pandemic-related help, start with websites like www.coronavirus.gov and www.usa.gov/coronavirus.



Don’t post your vaccination card to your social media account. Someone could use the information for identity theft.

IMPORTANT CONSUMER NOTICE: Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service starting January 1, 2022

If your mobile phone is more than a few years old, you may need to upgrade your device before your mobile provider shuts down its 3G network, to avoid losing service.

For more information on your mobile providers’ plans for 3G retirement and how you can prepare, contact your provider directly.

What is happening?

Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks, which rely on older technology, to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. As a result, many older cell phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services.

This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice). Certain medical devices, tables, smart watches, vehicle SOS services, home security systems and other connected products may also be using 3G network services.

If your mobile carrier is not listed here, you may still be affected. Many carriers, such as Cricket, Boost, Straight Talk, and several Lifeline mobile service providers, utilize AT&T’s, Verizon’s, and T-Mobile’s networks.

Note: These are dates for completing the shutdowns.

Carriers may begin retiring parts of their networks sooner.

Contact your mobile provider or consult your provider’s website for more information about their 3G retirement plan and whether your phone, or other connected device, may be affected. It is important to plan now so that you don’t lose connectivity, including the ability to call 911.

You may need to upgrade to a newer device to ensure that you can stay connected, and carriers may be offering discounted or free upgrades to help consumers who need to upgrade their phones.

Other Resources When is it happening?

As early as January 1, 2022, though plans and timing to phase out 3G services will vary by company and may change. Consult your mobile provider’s website for the most up-to-date information. 

AT&T announced that it will finish shutting down its 3G network by February 2022.



Verizon announced that it will finish shutting down its 3G network by December 31, 2022.



T-Mobile announced that it will finish shutting down Sprint's 3G CDMA network by March 31, 2022 and Sprint's 4G LTE network by June 30, 2022. It also announced it will shut down TMobile's 3G UMTS network by July 1, 2022, but has not yet announced a shutdown date for its 2G network.

New Digital Literacy Program Launches in Eau Claire

The Eau Claire County Broadband Committee, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, has developed a Digital Literacy Coaches/ Navigators Program. College student volunteers are available to connect one-to-one with citizens who wish to further their digital literacy skills.

This service is open to all residents of Eau Claire County, and we are making a special effort to meet the needs of people who have only recently gained access to high-speed internet, such as residents of Drammen Township, parts of Brunswick Township, and members of the 50 households that are participating in the Starlink Pilot project in an area of the county south of Augusta.

Basic digital literacy training generally includes at least the following elements (from National Digital Inclusion Alliance: Digital Inclusion Start Up Manual) - Components of a computer.

- Mouse and keyboard use - Using an internet browser - Creating and using an email account - Basics of word processing - Privacy, security, and data protection - Finding trusted sources for additional learning Digital Coaches/Navigators work with individuals based on those individuals unique learning goals and needs. Coaches/Navigators first assess the needs of the individual, and then guide them towards resources and learning activities and resources geared toward their needs. During the winter months, ice, snow, and cold temperatures can make life challenging for everyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses – especially for seniors. Many seniors during this time have less contact with others as getting around can be difficult and dangerous.

However, the Aging & Disability Resource Center’s loan closet has unique adaptive equipment that may be able to assist you or your loved one during this winter season. Check out some of ADRC loan closet items below.

Keep Warm and make it easier to get in and out of the tub to take a bath or shower in this cold weather. This device can be easily installed or removed without the hassle of tools or professional installation; has two powerful suction cups that is strong enough to ensure safe balance assistance and the grip consumer needs to safely enter or exit the bathtub or shower.

A tub bench chair with a back rest that offers support and adds comfort when showering; seat has holes that allows for drainage and has handles in order to reduce the risk of slipping; chair is height-adjustable.

Do you need something for a short amount of time? The loan program service is quick and easy to use. All adaptive equipment items can be borrowed up to three months. *Note: The ADRC loan closet does not have any medical or electronic equipment. Donations are not accepted at this time. If you’re 18 or older and have or live with someone who has chronic pain, this program is for you! Topics include: Short-term goal setting, Relaxation, Getting quality sleep, Bettering emotional health, Medication usage and evaluating treatment options, Balancing activity and rest, Creating a pain profile, Fatigue management, Communication skills with friends, family, and medical team. This program does not replace existing treatments, but serves to complement your current medical treatment plan, and is not meant for a person who has pain medication addiction issues.

Mind Over Matter: Healthy Bowels, Healthy Bladder (virtual) Three-session workshop designed to give women the tools they need to take control of symptoms. It provides information and group activities along with simple exercises and dietary changes to practice at home.

can be a means to cope with dark days. Practicing gratitude is easy to do once the individual begins to make a habit of it — and the benefits can be enormous.

GRATITUDE Taking time to smell the flowers may seem cliché but being grateful while rushing through the daily grind or disappointments in life may be a good way to begin the day.

It isn’t easy to be grateful all the time, especially when navigating through life’s challenges, but learning to be grateful for even the smallest things in our lives — and living in the moment and noticing all the reasons to be thankful — can do wonders for mental health and make it more bearable to get through the tough times.

It is understandable when seniors are overwhelmed with the adverse aspects of their lives, such as the loss of loved ones, diminished health, and little to do after a lifetime of caring for children or navigating a busy career. These things can take a toll on a person’s feeling of self-worth and mental health. Countless articles about striving for happiness abound, but being happy is not a one-size-fits-all cure.

Gratitude Benefits Many studies demonstrate that gratitude has a distinctively influential connection between health and happiness, and for many, it

The list is long, but some of the many benefits of living a grateful life include: • Greater happiness • Improved health • Strengthened relationships • Increased spiritualism • More contentment • Better sleep • Increased energy

Develop an Attitude of Gratitude While encouraging people to be grateful is great, being grateful together is much more powerful and effective. When we collaborate with loved ones or friends, it benefits everyone. While life can be challenging and often devastating, it can also be a wonderful time in life, with the help of some simple tools to maneuver through the challenges. Gratitude is a great tool that can make a difference in quality of life.

• Say thank you when you wake up. A new day is never promised, so being grateful every morning starts the day off on the right foot.

• Find the light in the dark.

Think of the good during the bad times to help refocus your attitude.

• Take a few minutes each day to focus on gratitude. It can be through prayer, meditation, or just thinking about who or what makes you grateful. Try to keep a regular time so it becomes a habit.

• Share your life by volunteering and giving your time and talent to benefit others. No matter our age, we all have talents we can share!

The Power of Practicing Gratitude At any age, life is challenging, so everyone can benefit from having a grateful heart. But being grateful every day for small things can make the pain easier to handle.

Learning to appreciate all we have at any given time can help boost our mood and turn a bad day around.

Think about developing a habit of practicing gratitude with a friend.

The results may be surprising and life-changing!

• List three things you are grateful for each day. This quickly puts life into perspective.

• Send thank you cards to old friends, family, or acquaintances, thanking them for their care and friendship.

• Keep a gratitude journal to help focus on the wonderful aspect of the day and to provide a reference for those times when life is hard.
