Caregiver & Family Support

We at the ADRC strive to support family and other informal caregivers. Sometimes we hear “I didn’t think of myself as a caregiver, I was doing what needed to be done.”

ADRC Mission Statement

To help people age 60+ and adults living with disabilities secure needed services or benefts, live with dignity and security, and achieve maximum independence and quality of life.

You might be a caregiver if… you fnd yourself stopping by your parents on your way home from work to take out the trash, make a meal, or make sure they have taken their medications. you are driving your neighbor to the doctor or grocery store - or you're doing their lawn care or other chores.

…you need to help your partner bathe, dress, or use the bathroom.

…you are a grandparent and are now raising your grandchildren.

These, and other tasks, are essential to those people in your life and are so appreciated! There aren’t always funded options for those tasks and receiving that help informally can be life changing. But it doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Caregiving can be both fulflling and taxing at the same time. We’re allowed to feel two things at once. Often, we truly want to help but also have to balance all the demands of life, and sometimes we all just have hard days, weeks or months. Know that your hard work is truly a beautiful way to make the world go round.

If you fnd reading to be therapeutic, there are many books on caregiving. Even if you want to purchase locally, searching Amazon for books and reading reviews is a great way to fnd just the right book for you. There are general caregiving books, humorous ones, guided journals, or about caregiving for a certain health condition like Parkinson’s. In no particular order or specifc recommendations here are a few samples of book ideas:

National Grief Awareness Day, August 30th

National Grief Awareness Day is on August 30th and was founded by Angie Cartwright in 2013. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of the variety of ways in which individuals can cope with loss, encouraging open communication on loss and bereavement, and better informing the public on the facts of grief.

For many, the word grief comes with the assumption that it is about death. Grieving the death of a loved one is one of the most painful and emotional journeys. What some don’t realize is that grief is not always about death, it is about loss that comes in many forms, death being just one of them. Other forms of grief include but are not limited to the loss of a marriage, relationship, health, career, stability, fnances, moving, a pet, retirement, independence, safety after trauma, a dream….and so much more. Regardless of the type of loss, grief is real.

What can you do to observe National Grief Awareness Day? Support a friend or family member in whatever way they need; offer to take them to breakfast or out for lunch and let them share their feelings, be present and listen compassionately. Create a self-care basket, purchase some flowers, offer to take the kids/grandkids, buy a card and handwrite a note, go for a drive, shop for groceries, offer to clean the house, or run some other errands.

If you are grieving a loss, engage in self-care and let yourself feel whatever you are feeling. There are many myths about how people should grieve. There is no wrong or right way to grieve – some people cry, some people scream, others want to be alone, while others seek out social connection. How we grieve depends on our resiliency, our experiences, our culture, and what we learned in childhood. Grief has no timeline.

You can help raise awareness and educate the public about National Grief Awareness Day by posting on social media, and having conversations in your organizations, business, and faith communities, or with your family and friends. Check out the resources from Angie Cartwright include that include Grief the Unspoken, www.facebook.com/AngieGriefTheUnspoken, Grief Diaries – Series of books, https://allybluemedia.com. Senior Dining or Congregate Dining is a program offered by the ADRC that provides a nutritious meal and an opportunity to socialize with others, make new friends, connect with old friends, change of scenery, and if desired, an opportunity to volunteer. Home Delivered Meals (Meals on Wheels) is geared for those that are ‘homebound’, while congregate dining is the same meal served in a public setting for those that are able to get around in the community. The purpose of this program is to ensure older adults have access to at least one nutritious meal fve days a week.

Anyone 60 years old and older is eligible; the nutrition programs are not only for those with low incomes. While a contribution is suggested, no eligible person will be denied a meal based on their contribution.

The meals comply with the Dietary Guidelines for Older Americans and provide at least 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowances for an older adult. Meals have no added salt and on average contain: 1 serving of grains, 3 servings of fruits/vegetables, 3 oz protein, 1 tsp fat, and 8 oz of 1% milk.

If you are interested in dining with us, check out the various locations listed in this newsletter for days and times of meal service. If you have any questions, please contact the ADRC at 715-839-4886.

What is an Assisted Living Facility?

What is an Assisted Living Facility?

“Assisted Living Facility” is a term that encompasses three types of facilities licensed, certified or registered by the Department of Health Services. All assisted living facilities combine housing with services to help people remain as independent as possible.

Residential Care Apartment Complex (RCAC)

Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF)

CBRF’s are staffed group living arrangements that provide room, board, supervision and other supportive services to 5 or more unrelated adult residents.

Typically, residents have either a private or shared sleeping room and bathroom, and share living and dining space with other residents of the facility. CBRFs are intended for people who cannot live independently, but are neither acutely ill nor need extensive amounts of skilled nursing care. Up to 3 hours of skilled nursing care per week may be provided. Unlimited amounts of supportive and personal care provided. Facilities vary in size from 5 residents to over 100.

Community Based Residential Facility Memory Care (CBRF-Memory Care)

Memory care facilities specialize in caring for persons with various dementias, most commonly Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or vascular dementia. The type of care provided in a Memory Care unit is the same type of care provided to the general population of an assisted living community, but on a much more intense level. Caregivers are also more familiar with the behaviors associated with memory impairments and interact positively to achieve desired goals.

An RCAC is a place where five or more adults reside. Apartments must each have a lockable entrance and exit; a kitchen, including a stove (or microwave oven); and individual bathroom, sleeping and living areas. This living option provides no more than 28 hours per week of supportive services, personal assistance and skilled nursing services. If a person finds themselves needing more care than this, they will have to either hire a private home care agency to supplement care or move to the next level which could be a CBRF or a Skilled Nursing Facility, depending on the situation.

For more information and a helpful booklet on the Assisted Living Facilities located in Eau Claire County, visit the Resource Library on our website www.eauclaireadrc.org, or give us a call at 715-839-4735.

There are many reasons to add zero step entry or a ramp, even if you don’t think you need one yet. One of the biggest reasons is SAFETY, a zero-step entry into a home can eliminate a fall risk, and allow a person more independence. A zero-step entry also will accommodate guests of all ages to easily access your home; from the toddler, who is learning to walk or a guest who uses a walker or a wheelchair. A ramp can also make bringing items such as groceries into the home easier, especially with a handy wagon or cart.

A few things to keep in mind when shopping for or building a ramp for your home:

• Ramps work best with a 1:12 pitch, 12 inches in length for every 1 inch in height.

• Add rubberized or sand texture paint to the railings and ramp surface for added traction.

• Leave enough room on the bottom side railing to push snow off easily.

• 36-38 inches of ramp width for wheelchairs and the moving of most furniture items on the ramp.

• A small deck near the door of the home allows for the door swing to accommodate a wheelchair.

• Building a ramp in an attached garage can be a way to avoid snow and ice in the winter months.

• Add a threshold ramp for a smooth transition at doorways.

When looking for a service that can build or install a ramp make sure to get at least two estimates. Check out the ADRC website under Resource Library/Home Care/Chore Resources to fnd a listing of handyman services or contact the Chippewa Valley Home Builders Association for a list of contractors.
