Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce

A message from the Chamber President

THANK YOU, OXFORD! Those three words have taken on a whole new meaning over the past few weeks. As everyone is aware, a devastating fire on the morning of September 14, caused the streetscape of our quaint, historical and quiet downtown area to change forever. The events of that night will forever be a reminder to all of us how quickly things can change. It also reminds us of how quickly a community can unite amid tragedy.

Businesses and residents alike lost their physical possessions, inventories, equipment and so much

more. But because of the bravery of our first responders and those from surrounding communities, no one lost their lives. We have so much to be thankful for in the response to the fire and even more so in the response from the community to lend a helping hand.

The OACC served as a triage of sorts to begin collecting monetary donations for the families affected by the fire. OMI served as the point of contact for donations to the downtown businesses affected that morning. It appears every resident in our area and every business within the OACC family

reached out to see what they could do, what people needed and where they could best serve. Local area businesses and restaurants were busy making breakfast, lunch and dinner for those displaced and local retailers couldn’t keep gift cards in stock! Our phones didn’t stop ringing and every call ended with “thank you so much”. I can honestly say that as the President of this Chamber of Commerce and also as a resident of Oxford – heartwarming doesn’t even begin to describe how the atmosphere of our town was in the days and weeks after the fire. The outpouring

of love, grace, compassion and assistance is something you get when you choose to live in a place like Oxford, Pennsylvania. I, for one, can tell you that I have always been and will continue to be proud to call Oxford my home.

Now – enjoy reading this edition of the Oxfordian! As always, this is a publication about businesses in our area that continue to give to the community in more ways than any of us can count!

New Life into an Old Timber Wolfe Lanes New Life into an Old Timber Wolfe Lanes

Since its construction in 1961, the bowling alley located at 1800 Baltimore Pike has seen Oxford area bowlers pop in for a quick game, league nights full of friends and family members, and even first dates. It was here in the mid 2000s that a collegiate bowler and Cecil County native, Catt Wolfe, met her now husband, Clifton Wolfe, a West Grove native. Flash forward to 2023, Catt is now the General Manager and the mind behind the complete renovation of the new Timber Wolfe Lanes Bowling Center & Pro Shop. Previously known as Timber Lanes, the old building was desperately in need of an overhaul and rebrand to create a more family-friendly space where children and adults of all ages could feel comfortable and excited to bowl. “We wanted to bring it back to life for the community to know we’re here and it’s a safe and warm environment for families to come,” explains Catt. “I’ve been a bowler for 25 years, I met my husband here and he is a bowler, so when it went up for sale it just made sense for us to take it over.”

Renovations began on May 11th 2023, and within 3 months, $300k was invested in upgrading electrical systems, a brandnew electronic scoring system, LED and disco lights, new flooring, new shoes, new balls, new menu items, and a new color scheme that divided the internet. “It went viral when we posted the color scheme, and I got a lot of backlash over it. I had to trust my gut though and I think it worked. To me it screams fun!” says Catt. The blue and green color scheme weaves throughout the building, tying together the walls and brand new furniture that looks great in full light or black light. You would never know that this was Catt’s first jump into business management, but knowing her industry like the back of her bowling hand has led her to success. Catt began bowling at the age of 4, and by the time she was ready for college, the sport gained her access to scholarships to help complete her Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Sciences from Kent State, Ohio. After graduation, she worked for an oil company in Lancaster. The decision to leave her job and her industry was easy once the opportunity to reinvigorate the alley came around. Clifton’s mother, Sandra DuVall of DuVall Bus Service, backed the venture and Catt ran full steam ahead with her plans. “Sandy is my superhero. The way she runs her business is amazing and if I can be a fraction of the business woman she is I’ll be successful.” gushes Catt.

Completing an entire building and branding overhaul is not without its challenges, and Catt navigated through them with her team to ensure success. “So much of the stuff that has been done here has been done by my team,” explains Catt. “They’ve painted, tiled, worked on scaffolding on the ceiling. The chef removed carpet and painted for days! Everybody is so invested in turning this place around.”

Speaking of the chef, the new menu at Timber Wolfe Lanes is not your typical bowling alley food. Catt is most excited for their flatbread options, including chicken bacon and ranch, barbecue chicken, buffalo chicken, and a veggie option. “I’m excited about the spicy cheese curds. Imagine a mozzarella stick, but tiny and cheddar cheese instead with some spice…amazing” says Catt. The new Timber Wolfe Lanes

offers event rentals for parties which include food and beverage, decorations and a birthday pin for guests to sign. Catt is also excited to give back to the community by working with the Special Olympics, the New London Counseling Center, and running a Saturday Morning Youth Program. The program runs 30 weeks, and kids that attend at least 15 weeks will be eligible for a scholarship. Catt hopes to give $500k worth of scholarships that she’ll raise through fundraising, donations, and the weekly youth program fee of $10.

League nights are back as well; Monday through Friday have dedicated times for leagues, but at 9:30pm on Friday nights, the party lights come on and it’s time to party with open-bowl. The alley also has 2 arcade rooms and a prize counter for tickets.

14 Fall/Winter 2023 | Volume 51

When asked about her future plans for Timber Wolfe Lanes, Catt answered “Expansion down the line is possible, but for now…happiness. I want this place to be self-sufficient. I want to see bowling take off. I want this to be a place where

kids can come and not get in trouble. If I can see some kids come in and get some scholarships and take an interest in it.” As a living example of the success bowling can offer to a young woman, Catt Wolfe is the perfect person to breathe new life into

Timber Wolfe Lanes and create the new era of bowling in Oxford.

Meghan Newberry

As a teenager, Meghan fell in love with the darkroom. While attending high school, she found the darkroom to be a place where she could go and quietly create her art while putting other stresses on the back-burner. The thought of film today almost feels like an ancient art. It was a passion that kept her spirits up and made for fun explorations out of school. After high school, Meghan no longer had access to an SLR (single lens reflex camera). Although always known as the person running around with point-andshoot cameras, an SLR wasn’t in the cards until many years later. College, a career and starting a family took over.

One day, Meghan decided to pick up a DSLR (digital single lens reflex camera) that had been sitting around in a closet. Quite a big jump in time, also meant a big jump to digital and editing on a computer instead of experimenting with chemicals and filters and paper types in a darkroom. But it quickly started a fire.

After all the time being away, she picked right back up where she had left-off. Now with children of her own and lots of friends and family requesting photos, she took the deep dive into the world of photographing that special connection. Photography can bring joy. It also serves as a glimpse into time. And each passing day, that image becomes a memory of the past. “It’s electric.” That connection of joy and love is what Meghan loves to capture in time for her clients. It helps bring families together, especially when they can be, physically, so far apart.

Clean Comedy and Viral TikToks by Oxford Son, Christian McCartney

Acomedic gift granted by God and perfected by impersonating Jim Carey characters, Christian McCartney is blazing his own path in clean stand up and acting. At 21 years old, Christian has already made a name for himself on the stand up circuit and on TikTok, amassing over 5 million followers who watch his daily content playfully tormenting his family.

Photos by Jim Coarse, Moonloop Photography

Christian realized his potential with comedy in Preschool, when he tried his first character out on his fellow classmates. “I wore one of my dad’s chains, and a jacket half zipped with no shirt underneath and did an Italian accent all day. Everyone cracked up. The chain kept pinching my neck all day and I had a big red spot after that, but I loved the way it felt to make

Continued from Page 23 people laugh,” said Christian. His next character idea of Popeye was inspired by an old pipe of his grandfather’s, but his parents quickly nixed the planned prop skit since pipes are definitely not allowed at school.

One rejected character didn’t deter him though, because Christian made plenty more outrageous choices that spurred new rules in the Bethany Christian School student handbook. “I wasn’t allowed to dye my hair anymore because it became a distraction to the students. I would flat iron it, shape it into different styles, make it as big as possible.” said Christian. And after testing almost every color of the rainbow, orange was decidedly the worst. “Red, white, green, blue, orange…Oh orange, orange

was a mistake…” recalled Christian.

In Mrs. Felter’s 5th grade class, Christian did his biography presentation on Jim Carey, one of his comedic heroes. His entire 7 minute biography presentation was done as Carey’s Fire Marshall Bill character from In Living Color, while other kids presented athletes, musicians and historical figures. “I saw The Mask” when I was in preschool and just loved it. Jim Carey always said he’d study his own face and the way he could move it, so I started doing the same thing to be like him.”

At 18, Christian did a stand up routine at his dad’s birthday party where he first felt the rush of crowd laughter as he roasted the area amish. Guests

and family members loved the act so much, they encouraged him to pursue comedy. Of course they may have later regretted that encouragement, as 3 short years later, they would all be part of his regular routine.

Christian’s dad, Dennis McCartney, is Director of Operations at Landhope Farms and President of the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, and is Tik Tok famous in his own right known as “Crispy DenDen”. “My dad was the one that told me I needed to get on social media and Tik Tok to promote myself. He loves it (being the center of many jokes).”

But it wasn’t always welltimed jokes and funny faces for Christian. After high school, he pursued a degree in Education with plans to teach, but dropped out when he felt God calling him

to pursue comedy. “I felt like if God was calling me to pursue comedy, then I needed to take my relationship with Jesus a lot more seriously. And once I did that, the changes that happened were unbelievable.” Christian explained that “obedience to his word in how we should treat others, and living his glory” in that treatment is what began opening doors for him. “When you trust him, you live through his word and his service, and it takes a lot of stress off to believe he knows what’s best for you.” But his parents weren’t thrilled with the idea of him dropping, regardless of who was calling him to it. In time, they would come around seeing the happiness his path has created for him and those he brings laughter too. “One of my goals for comedy is for families to laugh together,

because growing up and laughing with mine was the best feeling ever.”

Christian comes by his talent genetically, pointing out that his mom, Wyvonnejenne, is the queen of faces, and dad Dennis is talented in voices. His older sister and younger brother weren’t always as supportive of Christian’s humor growing up, as he recalled he would stay in character for hours without stopping, even when his siblings begged. “My sister liked one character only, a Swedish impersonation named Quincy that I would do whenever we were cleaning our rooms.”

At 19, Christian began traveling back and forth to Baltimore to perform at stand up clubs. As a steady income, he worked at a daycare and at Landhope during the day until his first TikTok went viral. “‘Talking Smack’...oh that was the first. It was one of five videos I planned on posting that day, and that one blew up. 20 millions views, then the NBA and NFL reached out and

asked to use to audio.” The video is pinned on his TikTok account @mistermccartney. official, and was just a random idea he had and wanted to get down on video. The audio of Christian speaking in a high pitch voice about taking Tai Quon Dao in the parking lot of a Walmart Supercenter as a threat has been used in over 150k other TikTok posts. Soon he was making as much money on TikTok content as he was working his day jobs, so he did the opposite of the old adage and quit his day job. “That was a mistake…algorithms are tough.” reflects Christian. “I thought once you were viral, you were in. That was not the case. Some of my videos would blow up and others would go nowhere.” Stand up and viral fame had found Christian, but still more was to come. His grandmother, living in Texas, helped score Christian’s next connection with Jason Earls, a Christian comedian and pastor in Dallas. Grandmom went to a church comedy show to see Earls with

her grandson’s face proudly displayed on her shirt, and marched right up at the end of the show to pass along Christian’s info. Soon Christian was linked with the Christian Comedy Association based in Indiana, and more doors began to open. Christian submitted an audition tape for a pilot called Mayberry Man, a continuation of a movie based on the Andy Griffith Show. “The director said my tape was terrible, but that something about my face that made him watch it over and over again. In my defense, the character is supposed to be a bad actor, so I thought I was doing the right thing by overacting!” After a table read in LA, he landed the role of Levi, an aspiring actor from Ohio that lives next to the main actress. The character began to morph more into Christian’s personality as he dove into it, and the director let him have creative control over it. The 5 episode pilot is filmed and edited and being reviewed

A stand-up tour is the latest project for Christian, who has been making stops since July along the east coast, Texas, Arizona, California, Wisconsin and Ohio. The tour, booked entirely on his own by reaching out to stand up clubs and churches, was a labor of love and anxiety. “When ticket sales weren’t doing well at one location, the Devil started getting into my mind and lying to me that I would flop. I started thinking I would fail.” Christian’s newly wed wife, Haley, helped him overcome these thoughts. “She reminded me that it doesn’t matter who doesn’t come to my shows, because the people that are there will be so happy to be there and I will be the one to make them laugh.”

Haley and Christian have been together since the last day of 8th grade, having met at the Oxford Halloween Parade earlier in the year. They have been together ever since, and were married in June of 2023. When scheduling his tour, Christian made sure to put his new marriage first. “I booked the tour dates with a week in between each because I didn’t want to be gone for 6 months. I got a lot of advice from comedians that said your marriage is extremely important and comedy can ruin it. My dream has always been to be a dad over being a comedian, and I would choose family over comedy anyday.” But for now, Haley hopes to work with Christian by doing videography to help record comedy shows and TikToks. “She likes to travel, she likes to laugh and she’s very supportive of me, so it works.”

In his free time, Christian can be found volunteering, aka, dunking on kids at the Lighthouse. He feels God gave him the ability to connect with kids, and he loves to mentor them in and out of the Lighthouse. He’s also learning to play piano and cornrow hair, so he can do his future kid’s hair like his mom used to do for him.

Only about 15% of his material is about the church, but all of his material is family-friendly. Christian ends every one of his sets with the sign off “Laughter is good medicine, but Jesus Christ is the only healer”, a phrase that raises the eyebrows of some but stays true to his comedic mission. “When people look at my career and life I would like them to see when you seek Christ and submit to His will, THAT is the only way you can truly live in your fullness!”

Spirited Away with Spring House Spirits

32 Fall/Winter 2023 | Volume 51
Photos by Jim Coarse, Moonloop Photography

The old story goes: at the ripe age of 8, Chris Demars grandmother taught him how to distill spirits right at home. They were prohibition moonshiners - and apparently very good ones!

Chris didn’t start his distillation career until he was a bit older. And yes, legally! He takes great pride in his family farm where all of the Spring House Spirits are initially crafted. With an emphasis on using as many local ingredients as possible, Spring House aims to be the real local deal. On the farm, it was only fitting to put the distillery in the milk house. Their logo, along with most of their labels feature a fox, also known as “Phineas,” because of the rich tradition of fox hunting on the farm and local area.

During the early days, Chris was making wonderful spirits and only a few knew about it. One day, an encounter with Randy & Jennifer Litwin, sparked a change. Randy & Jennifer ran a local retail shop in downtown Parkesburg and Chris needed some marketing help. A few meetings and a few bottles later, they were investing into Spring House with the opening of a tasting room on Main Street in Parkesburg.

Hand-crafted from start to finish; handpicked local ingredients start the mash that goes into the still that is refined and carefully manicured into fine oak barrels. It is then delivered to the tasting room where it is bottled and hand labeled. Those spirits are then shaken and stirred into mystical potions using the finest ingredients they can find. 7th Level Mortgage

7

th Level Mortgage began operating in December of 2012, departing from the “Big Lender” model to provide the community with fair, honest, low-cost mortgage loan products and pricing, delivered with a hometown family appeal. The values and goals of 7th Level Mortgage are what led Nick Sandoval to join the team, after leaving 20 years of experience with many national banks. “To get back to the basics I decided to shift my focus onto the Mortgage Loan Officer role. Through networking I connected with a former colleague, Anthony Piccone, who had started 7th Level Mortgage in 2012. Anthony is an Army Veteran with over 30 years in the mortgage industry. Concerned with the lack of product options and non-personal direction the mortgage industry was taking, 7th Level Mortgage was created to be an industry leader delivering various competitive products and assisting customers through the entire application process for the ultimate client experience. Anthony put together a caring, knowledgeable, hardworking team which was the perfect fit for me.” explains Nick. Nick moved to Oxford from Brookehaven in 2021. He’s helped a number of Oxford residents obtain home ownership since becoming part of the community. “The Oxford community is amazing. They have welcomed and supported me in building meaningful relationships. The people of Oxford respect hard work, honesty, and service.” said Nick.

You may also know Nick from one of his many volunteer projects. He recently

partnered with Good Neighbors Home Repair (GNHR), raising $4k for the nonprofit by completing an endurance event running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. After the event, he helped GNHR replace two roofs for people in need. Nick also volunteers at The Lighthouse Youth Center, coaches basketball for the Oxford Youth League, and gives out free face painting at First Fridays. His next project is with the Oxford Civic Association on October 15th at 1pm. There will be a 1 mile or 3 mile walk raising money to feed community members in need. Find out more here: www. Oxford Area Neighborhood Services Center

We have always been known as crisis responders. For over 50 years we have assisted in helping individuals and families get back on their feet, stabilize their affairs, and have the tools and resources to live with selfdetermination and confidence. When that happens Oxford is a stronger and more unified community, like an extended family.

So in the late evening of Wednesday, September 13, 2023, when a devastating fire broke out in downtown Oxford, we do what we are trained to do, we respond to a crisis. The fire quickly spread to include 4 multi-use buildings that housed a total of 25 apartments. As community partners gathered to aid including County resources, it was determined that Neighborhood Services Center

was best equipped with trained staff to lead the crisis efforts for our extended family. We are prepared to help our displaced residents every step of the way in helping them rebuild their lives.

Prior to the Oxford Fire in

September, NSC saw an increase in the need for our food pantry services. As the holidays approach, we anticipate that need increasing. Our annual holiday programs include the Thanksgiving/Christmas meal boxes and Christmas toy room. If you are

Home Runs and Home Renovations with Harbor Stone Construction

Igrew up a mile past the old High school on 5th St in Oxford PA. I played in the woods, I swam in my creek, my friends and I would ride our bikes all over town and the surrounding townships all summer long. We played school sports, took part in civic events and went to church with people of our community - life was great as a child for me. My dad was a Navy Vet, all of his friends were either Army, Navy or Marine Corps vets. Both of my grandfathers served during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. My future was established long before I even knew it. But first things first, if I was going to be an all American boy, then I needed to learn to love and appreciate the most perfect game ever created, Baseball. I needed some help, so when I was 7 years old my parents made the decision to take me out of full time daycare and instead, have me spend my summer with a local family, the Rozichs...I suspect it was to learn how to play baseball correctly, and I’m sure the flexible schedule and lower cost had nothing to do with it.

So one summer morning, my parents took me over to that house not far from Lincoln University and they dropped me off. All I knew was that the family had a boy 6 years older than me named John Rozich with a killer baseball card collection. His room was in the basement of his parents house and the walls were covered in Phillies memorabilia, Mike Schmidt posters, and the coolest thing yet, his own home run balls. I thought “this dude was a real life superhero in the flesh, and I get to hang out with him.” I had no idea, but just like Smalls in the sandlot, that this house would form in me a love for a family and a game that would last my lifetime. We would spend 5 summers together total, filled with endless PB&J sandwiches and glasses of milk, and John

letting me tag along to follow him everywhere.

John Rozich wasn’t an average ball player. He began playing at 9 years old when his family lived in Bucks County. After moving to Oxford, he played for the Oxford Little League and then Legion ball. Kutztown University picked John up on scholarship, where he currently sits in their Hall of Fame. He is noted as a 4 years starter catcher with stand-out performance, 192 career runs from 1996-99, and still holds school records with 49 doubles, 37 home runs and 378 total bases. It was this performance that led him to be the 18th round draft pick by the LA Dodgers farm team, the Yakima Bears based in Washington State. He played a year with the team before injuring his arm with a strained UCL, but was able to

avoid a common surgery called Tommy John surgery. “I played the game more for fun and the business side was there. I lost the love for it,” explains John. “Once I stopped playing Baseball, I started playing Fast Pitch softball and started coaching my sons and found a new love for it.”

After his year with the Dodgers, John returned to Oxford and finished his degree, a dual major in Management and Marketing. He had worked construction jobs throughout high school and college, jobs that were actually brought to him by his Little League coach. When the economy took a dip in 2008, John lost his steady construction job and was left with a decision on where to go next. A friend and family attorney told John that he could work for anyone with his skills, and encouraged him to start his own company. “I had talked about it for years but when the economy went under in 2008-2010 I was let go of my company, and I decided

it was sink or swim. I wiped out my 401k and started my business, Harbor Stone Construction,” John recounts. “And I had 3 kids at home,” John added, with his wife, Jamie Rozich agreeing “Casen was born!”

John and Jamie have 3 amazing boys, Brennan (21), Landen (16), Casen (13), who have been blazing their own paths in baseball. Brennan has made his own name at Kutztown while pay homage to his dad, keeping the same jersey number #20. He’s a utility player majoring in Criminal Justice, and in his Junior year, started 33 of their 39 games. Landen plays for Oxford High School and West Chester Dragons as a Shortstop and Second Baseman, and after

his graduation in 2025, has committed to George Mason University in Virginia. Casen, a left-handed pitcher and 1st baseman, is listed with a fastball speed of 65 mph on his 13u team.

With the full weight of providing for his family and 3 growing boys, John knew he had to make his business plan work.

“It was a drive to do something for myself, to make something for myself and it was hard as hell. I was always told you have to get through 4-5 years and if you make it through that, you will make it,” explained John. And make it, they did. Harbor Stone Construction started with one employee, and now they have a team of 10 including project managers and architects.

Harbor Stone Construction handles every type of remodel or new build, from small to large, including drywall patching, kitchen and bathroom remodels, new home construction, and even commercial projects - they recently completed the locker room renovation for the YMCA in Delaware. Customers come with ideas in mind and Harbor Stone Construction runs with the plans. Designers work with customers to map out their goals and needs, architects work with the build requirements and then John’s team of construction professionals bring it to life. A standard kitchen or bathroom renovation averages 6-8 weeks.

John and Jamie are proud to be a home-grown business. “We’re from here, we grew up here, our kids went to school here,” explains Jamie, with John adding “It gives you a sense of pride,

we grew up here so we’re established here. We know a lot of people here and we try to give back to the local sports teams and sponsor different events. It’s good to give back.”

John continues to coach for the West Chester Dragons travel organization. “I’m still tough and I demand a lot, but I’ve softened in other ways.” - John “Yea, but they still want to play for you” - Jamie. And growing up with John, I knew it best back then. John showed me how to be firm, but fair. He showed me when it was time to use strength and when it was time to use compassion. He showed me how to help people who

needed it. John certainly wasn’t an adult, but he was older and more mature and it was his job to offer some sort of guidance and limits. Sometimes he could talk me out of my bad ideas… more often than not it took some strong arming - noogies, charley horses, punch buggies, and good old fashioned wrestling always ended with John showing me that he was right, and I was the kid brother who needed to listen.

DuVall Bus Service

For 90 years, DuVall Bus Service has provided the Oxford and Avon Grove area with the highest quality bussing services. From school buses to big and small coaches, DuVall prides themselves in providing highclass transportation in style. “We pride ourselves on having the cleanest and nicest well maintained fleet around, and being on time with the most courteous drivers who are there to make sure that your event transportation needs are met.” The family-owned business was started by Charles W. DuVall, who farmed and ran dump trucks. The Avon Grove School District sought out Charles to take over a

bus run, bringing the DuVall family into the bussing industry. Charles’s son, Robert, was brought into the business when he was old enough, and the duo added more equipment and more services, including farming, snow plowing, running dump trucks and school buses.

When Charles retired, Robert and his wife Frances bought the business and expanded on the truck driving portion by hiring more drivers. The Avon Grove School district expanded their services through DuVall, by adding more routes and vans to their busing schedule.

In 1998, DuVall purchased their first coach bus to expand the business to private charters with a luxury vehicle. While the coach and charter side of the business grew exponentially, the trucking side took a halt in 2005 during the economic downturn and the trucks were parked, turning the main business of the company to charter and bussing.

The company is now in the hands of

Robert and Frances daughter, Sandra DuVall-Wolfe, who continues to keep the business in the family. “If you’re looking for group transportation for a wedding, party, reunion, private trip or religious retreat, DuValls can meet your needs.” says Sandra. DuValls has buses that can accommodate parties from small to large, and can take you to a single destination or multiple stops along the way. DuVall’s fleet can also be used to shuttle between venues for events such as weddings. Their drivers are courteous and professional, and their buses are held to the highest standards for cleanliness and maintenance. DuVall will also help navigate the space requirements for their vehicles at locations with limited parking.

OAHA Secures Historic Union School Building

On March 1st, the Oxford Area Historical Association (OAHA) signed an agreement of sale for the old Union School Building at 5th and Hodgson Streets in Oxford, as well as a very-affordable five-year lease that will allow them time to raise money to purchase the building.

The Union School building is a living, breathing tapestry of history of southern Chester County. The building holds a storied history and timeline of our country – the good, the bad and the ugly. It is a

monument of how far our country has come, and to how far our community has come. The actual building is a testament of how much the community of Oxford valued education. Careful attention was given not only to the design and architecture, but also to how to create an atmosphere where all children could learn to the best of their capabilities.

In early 1867 the Board of School Directors of Oxford petitioned the State Legislature for a special act to enable the Board to borrow $8,000 for the purpose of erecting a new schoolhouse the coming

summer. However, in early 1868 the Board extended the school term an extra month, ending the 10th of April. At the close of the term, the old schoolhouse was torn down to make room for the new one. The new school year would begin when construction was finished shortly after the new year.

An article in the Oxford Press waxed poetically over the new building, saying: “the public school building in this Borough, in point of beauty, convenience, comfort and adaptability for school purposes, has probably built one (school)

superior in the county.” Great detail was given to the construction. Firstly, it is one of Grecian architecture. That very fact illustrates that ancient history was also held high by the Borough’s founding fathers and probably bespoke what would one day be studied in there.

“The building is 44 by 60 feet, two stories, each 14 feet high, with basement. The brick walls are eighteen inches thick, on stone foundation walls, two feet thick, with center wall, all built in a most substantial manner.” The careful construction planning of the building and the pride in work has kept this building secure to this day. The description continued: “The roof is of slate, surmounted by a cupola 40 feet high, the top of which is 86 feet from the ground, and in which is suspended a 350-pound bell that every day rings out its call to the children to hasten to the hall

of learning. There are four school rooms, each 20 by 40 feet, and connected with each is a recitation room 10 by 20 feet; there is also a large closet in each room, supplied with hooks and shelves for the hats, clothing, baskets, etc. of the pupils.” Functionality was also given consideration in the following description: “The two classrooms on each floor are separated by a glass partition, the sash of which can be raised or closed at pleasure. The rooms are well lighted by large windows. The building is warmed by two large heaters in the cellar, where the pupils are also allowed access and which affords them a fine large playroom in cold or wet weather. A portico is yet to be erected over the front doors, which will add greatly to the handsome appearance of the building, and when the walks are laid, the yard enclosed with a neat fence and planted with shade trees…we should have a school building and surroundings which will be an honor to our town, and

reflect credit upon our present efficient school board.”

It is amazing to read that the cost of the building and furniture, when finished would amount to about $10.000.

Four teachers were employed there. Primary, Miss Mary M. Johnson who had 59 pupils on opening day. Secondary, Miss Lavinia Pennell, 48 pupils; Grammer, Miss Harriette McIntire, 34 pupils; High School, Mr. H.F. Pierce, principal, 34 students. The salaries paid the teachers were $180 per month. The principal received $75, teachers of the secondary and grammar schools each received $40, and the teacher of the primary school received $35. At that time members of the School Board consisted of William S. Harlan, W.A. Long, Robert Irwin, John K. McKissick, Thomas P. Campbell and Joseph Murdagh. The contractor and builder of the house was Nathaniel Hudder of East Nottingham Township.

When the building opened in 1868, it was the first time that space allowed

for graded classrooms. Originally, all of Oxford’s children, both black and white, were educated in this building. As Oxford continued to grow, in 1905 a new school building – the Hopewell School – was constructed across the street. Hopewell was the first high school in town, and white students attended grades One through Twelve in that building. Oxford’s African-American students remained in the Union School building for grades One through Seven, then joined their white schoolmates in the Hopewell School for their high school years. Students of all races attended shop and agriculture classes in the Union School building. Racial segregation in schools ended in Oxford in 1947, almost ten years prior to the landmark Brown vs. the Board of Education ruling. Since that time, the school was used for spillover classes from other schools. This writer actually has fond memories of attending fifth grade there. The school was also used as the Oxford Area School District’s

60 Fall/Winter 2023 | Volume 51

administration building for a number of years, and school board meetings were held in the rear of the building.

At a time when history has become political and divisive within this country, the Union School Building is a testament to the dreams of not only the southern Chester County community, but the entire country. It is a dream that should never be forgotten, and thanks to the hard work of OAHA it will be memorialized. OAHA held their first public Open House in late August, with an exhibit that focused on education in the region.

OAHA has started a capital campaign to purchase the building for their new History Center, and the affordable fiveyear lease they now hold on the property will give them time to raise the funding needed. The community investment needed to make the total project a reality is $1,200,000. As part of the agreement of sale, OAHA is required to put down $50,000 each year towards the purchase

Continued from Page 61 price of the building, which will be $700,000 or the fair market value, whichever is less. In addition to that, OAHA will pay monthly rent, which is capped at $1,000 per month for the entire five-year period. That rent will not go towards the purchase price. OAHA was formerly located on Locust Street. Due to very limited space at that location, many of their historical artifacts, documents and other memorabilia needed to be stored in climate-controlled storage units, inaccessible to the public. Lack of space also limited the materials they could accept from residents who wished to preserve area history. They were desperately in need of a new location. When the Union School building became available, they realized they had found the home they had been seeking. More importantly, another historic building will be preserved.

The building had been previously renovated by PC Scales. That renovation included an accessible entrance ramp, handicapped bathrooms, a full-building HVAC system and a large generator. The building will require very few alterations to make it an ideal location for OAHA’s new History Center.

The Oxford Area Historical Association was founded in the year 2000 by Dr. Faye Doyle, inspired by a conversation with Jahan Sheikholeslami. The organization is passionately dedicated to preserving the historic significance of the borough of Oxford and the five surrounding townships. Their geographical focus is the entire area covered by the Oxford Area School District.

programs on a variety of historical topics, records oral histories of long time Oxford residents, and has organized walking tours, co-sponsored reenactor programs in the school district, and arranged trips to historical sites. The new location has sufficient space for volunteers to work, local residents and students to do research, and school children and other visitors to tour. The majority of schools in the Oxford Area School District are within a 5-to-10-minute walk, so the location will be ideal for working on joint projects with local students. The new space also affords the OAHA the ability to expand their outreach to the public. Important oral histories of local prominent persons will be accessible to outsiders and families who will have the ability to see and hear from the interesting characters who have lived or passed through our town.

OAHA’s History Center contains approximately 6,000 square feet of usable

space, compared to their former space that had less than 1,000 square feet. Parking at the former space was also limited, but the new location includes a side yard and a 40-car parking lot. There is also plenty of space for both indoor and outdoor activities and events, and room to grow in the future. This new location could become an important County destination, introducing people to our rich and varied history and bringing much-needed tourism dollars to our town and region. As Chester County moves forward with a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the start of our country, OAHA will serve as an informational gateway for Southern Chester County, sending people to various sites of interest in our area. It is also OAHA’s goal to provide space and support for all the local area historic commissions, many of which are struggling to find volunteers. One central location for files, with consistent

staffing, would help to ensure that none of the important knowledge held by the Borough and the Townships is lost.

The mission of the Oxford Area Historical Association is to preserve and promote the historical significance of the Oxford area, educate the community on historical interests, and to encourage the economic vitality of the Oxford area through historic preservation. The vision of the Oxford Area Historical Association has always been to build a shared community legacy for the future by preserving our past. That plan can now come to fruition in the new space.

OAHA is open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 am – noon. For more information, please visit the website at www.oxfordhistorical. org, or send an email at information@ oxfordhistorical.org. Lloyd Shetron Termite and Pest Control

Lloyd Shetron Termite and Pest Control has been evicting pests from clients homes since 1986, servicing the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. The company, created by Lloyd Shetron, began with a love for the industry after taking an industry job in Havertown. “I worked for 4 or 5 other pest control companies before starting my own. I have a very A-type personality and I love meeting people and talking with people, so the more I was doing it the more I loved it.” explains Lloyd, remembering in detail his official company launch on April 1st, 1986 in Parkesburg, Pennsylvania.

Prior to that, Lloyd served two years in the Army as Military Police at Fort Meade in Maryland in 1969 during the Vietnam Era. Lloyd worked as base security and handled protests in Washington DC against the war. “We had to have a lot of spit-shine and polish to act as a good example of Military Police during those protests, and I still operate with that level of professionalism to this day. We are very professional, polite, thorough and responsive - I try to get back to my clients within 12-16 hours of them contacting me.”

After his service in the Army, Lloyd lived in the Philadelphia area taking odd jobs. He worked as a laundry delivery driver and a newspaper circulation manager, among other jobs. It wasn’t until he answered an employment ad in a newspaper while living in Haverford that he found his niche. The tight-knit industry has brought him friends and colleagues from all over the tri-state area, and they get to meet up at training and certifying events every few years.

Now a resident of Lincoln University, Lloyd has watched the area change and grow over time, and his clients as well. “It’s amazing, but I have generations of clients now that are adults and I serviced their parents when they were kids! I would get them following me around during visits, and now their own children follow me around!” It’s word

of mouth and reputation that keeps Lloyd Shetron’s clients loyal. “The community has been a great help and I truly appreciate it. We have great reviews on FaceBook and people recommend us on message boards and word of mouth. I had one young lady call me as I was leaving a job at her friend’s house who had recommended me before I left! So I told her I was on my way!”

Lloyd likes to keep his business model simple and effective. He has one other employee besides himself to guarantee the best service and professionalism around.

And while Lloyd looks forward to taking more time off for vacations in the future, his business will continue to provide the best in service for pest control needs. He prides himself on staying tech-savvy with social media and payments, accepting credit cards and Venmo for client services.

When Catina (Teen) Milbourne was looking for the perfect place to open her barbecue and soul food restaurant, Oxford was not on the original list of towns. In fact, Pennsylvania as a whole was not even on the original list; North Carolina, Florida and Maryland were all contenders, but Teen scrapped those plans. The Coatesville resident considered her own town and the main line, but on a surprise drive-through of Oxford, something felt…right. After a quick call to her real estate agent who is also her niece, Teen had 3 buildings to tour and the second building, located at 37 S. 3rd Street, was the perfect fit.

Since the grand opening in March of ‘23, Teens Place has been serving up the area’s best in homemade barbecue and soul food. “Everybody is so welcoming and so nice,” says Teen, who is always ready to greet you with a hug and knows all of her patrons by name. “Sometimes people don’t like what they do, and I LOVE what I do.”

big at our house. My mom would cook 4 meats on Sunday and feed the whole block,” explains Teen. Leftovers were the prize for Teen, who would call out on the street to boys playing basketball and sell them plates of hot sausage sandwiches and greens and pocket the profit. “Once

my mom found out, she started locking the fridge!” said Teen, laughing out loud at the memory.

At 18, Teen began using her mom’s recipes to cook her own meals and began posting them on social media. Her friends

and followers thought the pictures looked so good, they started asking if she would cater or cook for them. Teen was in medical assistant school at the time and while she loved taking care of her mother before her passing in 2015, she wasn’t sure if that career path was right for her. One night during her classes, she decided it was time to pursue her dream to start catering. Teen catered for years using her mom’s recipes, and creating her own spin on some. Before her mom passed away, Teen whispered to her that she would open a restaurant with her recipes and make her proud. In 2023, she accomplished that dream by making Oxford its home. “The first few days it was packed in

The restaurant is also working on a BYOB license, to help give diners some courage for that karaoke. Teen is also working on a line of dry rubs and seasonings, so you can take a little of her signature flavor home. “Come to teens place to get that comfortable feeling, good vibes, great staff and feed your soul,” says Teen, and make sure you get yourself a hug from her too!

Wyncote Golf Club

Since opening in 1993, Wyncote Golf Club has been widely recognized across the industry for course layout, playing conditions, value and overall experience. In a moment of symmetry, they were ranked #30 for Public/Resort Golf Courses in the country in their 30th year of operation. When Wyncote decided they needed an upscale casual dining experience to round-out their offerings, Jon Reither, Director of Food and Beverage, was the man for the job.

Located on the Main floor, just off of the Golf Shop, The Restaurant @ Wyncote aims to create a welcoming dining experience with spectacular views of the Scottish Link-style course.

The new Restaurant @ Wyncote offers fresh locally sourced and seasonal foods, like the classic Kennett Mushroom Soup and Fish and Chip, to the more adventurous dishes like Ratatouille and Chicken Dubliner. The event space can

also be rented out for private events, such as business or family events.

“Business meetings, social and fundraising events, and special occasions, we can accommodate up to 125 people. The Restaurant @ Wyncote has seating for 100 people, with outdoor dining options. Our goal for our Food & Beverage operation is to be a social gathering spot for Oxford and any community within 20 minutes.” says, Jon. “For the local community and beyond, we are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.”

“First and foremost, the space needed a new look and we recognized the opportunity to be more efficient and dynamic in our delivery of service.” explains Jon. “When the Pepple family decided to turn their dairy farm into a golf course, they made sure that Wyncote was a Public facility, not a Private Club. Although we attract golfers from a great distance, our core is this community. We love that we can provide a welcoming space for the first date to the Anniversary party.”

Wyncote prides itself in being one of the

best summer jobs for teens in the area, and The Restaurant @ Wyncote will expand on those opportunities throughout all seasons.

“ We like to think we are the best summer job around, over 30 yrs hosting hundreds of nervous teens on their first go around in the job market.” says Jon.

And if golfing is of interest, the course at Wyncote is open to the public.

“Maintaining the golf course at a world class level has long been the priority. Led by Mark McGreevy, GCSSA, for the last 16 years, the agronomy team is both capable and passionate as evident by the list of awards received over the last 30 years!” explains Jon.

Whether you’re looking for a nice dining night out with spectacular sunset views, or a private event rental space, The Restaurant @ Wyncote can accommodate and impress!

Find out at more on their website at www.wyncote.com/dining/, or visit in person at 50 Wyncote Drive, Oxford, PA.
