The Plumpton Park Zoo:

A great place to spend time with your kids If you have not been to the Plumpton Park Zoo in a while you are in for a treat! Located at 1416 Telegraph Road in Rising Sun, the zoo maintains a beautiful, exotic collection of wild animals for the public to enjoy. The owners, Cheryl and Nick Lacovara, rescued the zoo after the facility was shut down in July 2010. Most thought the facility would never reopen, but this couple, who are exotic animal keepers from Mullica Hill, New Jersey, have in five years totally revitalized the park. The zoo is now a permanent community-supported institution for everyone to enjoy.

It is evident that these animals are their passion as you walk the well-maintained grounds and view how healthy and happy their animals are.

The following is a list of the animals that you can view in their natural habitats: Mammals at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: Alpaca, American Bison, African Crested Porcupine, an African Serval, Arctic Foxes, Bactarin Camels, Bengal Tiger, a Binturong, Black Backed Jackals, American Black Bear, a Bobcat, Eurpean Brown Bear, Fallow Deer, a Giraffe, Llama, Pot Bellied Pigs, Prairie Dogs, Pygmy Goats, Reeves Muntjac, Sheep, Siamang Apes, Sicilian Donkeys, a Silver Fox, Timber Wolves, an African Watusi, a White Bengal Tiger, a White Faced Capuchin Monkey and a pair of Zebra.

Birds at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: Barred Owl, Blue and Gold Macaw, Blue-eared Pheasant, Chinese Silky Chickens, Ducks, Harris’s Hawk, Heritage Turkey, Peacocks, Red Golden Pheasant, Sandhill Crane, and Silver Pheasant, Scarlet Macaw, Umbrella Cockatoos, Goffin Cockatoo, Sun Conure.

Reptiles at the Plumpton Park Zoo The zoo is home to: African Sulcata Tortoise, American Alligator, Ball Python, Burmese Python, Corn Snake, Gecko, Green Iguana, Hermann Tortoise, Red Iguana, Red Footed Tortoise, and Red Eared Sliders.

Education is an important mission of the Plumpton Park Zoo. Summer Camps give children an in-depth opportunity to learn about various animals at the zoo.

The Plumpton Park Zoo is happy to offer group rates for schools, scouts, and other groups that wish to visit the zoo. Admission to the zoo is only $12 which makes it a very affordable family outing. In addition the zoo also is a great place for birthday parties, family picnics, corporate events and weddings.

The museum is in its second season of being available to the public on the weekends, and seasonal visitors to Chesapeake City are excited to be able to tour the facility and enjoy the waterfront park-like setting.

This waterfront historic site is located inside the original 18th century pump house that once controlled the water levels in the locks along the first edition of the canal. Interactive displays, fascinating videos and more enchant visitors of all ages. Shakespeare in the Park in the Dark “Cymbeline” will be performed by the Brown Box Theatre Project from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Pell Gardens on Sept. 17.

Tour de canal On Sept. 24, the Ben Cardin C&D Canal Recreational Trail will be the site of an annual family biking benefit. Participants will bike from the Ben Cardin Trailhead to Delaware and back. The cost is $35 per person. The event benefits Deep Roots Inc., The Paris Foundation, Generation Station and Chesapeake City Ecumenical Association. Participants collect tokens along the way. Prizes are awarded. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

GOOD IDEA: The Route 213 bridge over the C&D Canal will be one lane, due to repair work, until early fall. It’s easy to reach Chesapeake City’s north side by way of Route 896 to Route 71 to Chesapeake City Road past the Delaware Veterans Cemetery all the way to Schaefers or the C&D Canal Recreational Trailhead. Plenty of new entertainment at this year’s Cecil County Fair The Cecil County Fair—one of the county’s most popular annual events and an enduring tradition for many families in the area—will be returning to the Fair Hill Fairgrounds at 4640 Telegraph Road in Elkton from July 22 to July 30.

There will be plenty of new entertainment and returning favorites at this year’s fair.

Here’s a look at some of the entertainment that is planned:

Team Uprooted

Professor Bubblemaker

Marty Long has been coming to the Cecil County Fair for several years and his extreme chainsaw carving show, “Team Uprooted,” never fails to draw a crowd. Marty began his carving career in 1992 with “Fear No Ice,” an ice-carving company, and he competed on the N.I.C.A. competition circuit. In 2000, he tried his hand at woodcarving and then joined “Masters of the Chainsaw.” During a forty-five-minute show, from behind protective netting, onlookers will observe an original and captivating high-energy performance. With chainsaw roaring and chips flying, Marty’s precision and skill quickly transforms a three-foot tall log into a true work of art. Nearly every show will result with a chainsaw carving being produced from start to finish, with as many as four chainsaw carvings per day. The carvings will be auctioned off during a live auction during two days at the fair.

Eleven years ago, Professor Bubblemaker began performing soap bubble art at street and arts festivals. Over the years, the show has grown from a small strolling act in Huntsville, AL to a cutting-edge bubble and light show choreographed to music. In 2013, Professor Bubblemaker was featured in AMC networks’ “The Road Show.” In 2015, Professor Bubblemaker became the first person in the world to put a full grown cow inside a bubble and later that same year, he put a Percheron draft horse in a bubble.

During the day, the Professor will stroll around the fairgrounds filling the sky with bubbles, and delighting children of all ages performing tricks with bubbles that you never thought possible. In the evening, the lights and music come on for the Bubble Ballet and Rock & Roll Bubble show at the professor’s medicine show wagon. Both shows feature bubbles of all shapes and sizes from tiny bubbles to some of the biggest bubbles in the world. You will see bubbles made with everything from traditional bubble wands, giant rope wands of the professors invention, and nothing more than the professor’s hands. Each show ends with a finale that fills the sky with bubbles and even puts audience members inside of bubbles. These shows transport young and old alike to a wondrous world where the simple joy of bubbles will bring smiles and fun to all.

Ultimate Flying Canines Todd Duncan and his pack of “Ultimate Flying Canines” could not be happier to be performing again this year at the Cecil County Fair. “This is one of my favorite performances of the year. The crowd is so enthusiastic and every year I get to see folks returning to the fair,” said Duncan. Todd is a five-time World Dog Frisbee Champion. He has been performing professionally with his team of dogs since 2005. He has performed at state and county fairs, professional and college sporting events nationwide, as well as international competitions. He is also an active member of the DAWG Foundation. The DAWG Foundation (Dogs Assisting Wounded GI’s) was formed with the mission of providing companion canines for US military veterans, (and select First Responders), battling PTSD. Grand Illusions by the Blooms For over twenty-five years Grand Stage Illusionist and Master Magician John Steven Bloom has been wowing audiences and garnering critical acclaim for his special blend of magic, humor and family entertainment. Bloom and his wife, Chance, have appeared with rock legends Alice Cooper, Journey, REO Speedwagon, comedian ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, and country stars and actors such as Pam Tillis and Billy Bob Thornton, to name a few. John and Chance have been seen on international stages, headlined at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas and have been seen on numerous televised programs. John, Chance and their four daughters were a feature act at several county fairs across the Midwest in 2015.

Live music is also a part of the Cecil County Fair.

Steak & Main— a star in the culinary world Steak & Main, located in North East, was purchased and remodeled by Tony Covatta in September of 2003. Steak & Main became the crowning star in the culinary world for restaurants between Philadelphia and Baltimore, and a favorite for professional food critics and your everyday gastro-skeptics.

The Covatta family has plenty of history in the culinary world, having owned 22 restaurants from Philadelphia to the Main Line and now to North East, Maryland. The restaurants have been featured on six different Travel Channel shows.

“My grandfather told me no matter what you name your restaurant, make sure your customers call it ‘Tony’s,’” explained Tony Covatta. “That’s how you tell the customer has become your friend.”

Milburn Stone Theatre presents three shows this summer The Milburn Stone Theatre at Cecil College is heating things up this summer with three big productions taking over the entire month of August.

First up, an iconic production of the modern classic, “A Few Good Men” by Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network,” “The West Wing,” and “The Newsroom.”) Known around the world for the popular 1992 movie adaption and its legendary catchphrase, “A Few Good Men” is sure to elicit cheers and leave audiences wanting more in this taut and provocative courtroom thriller.

Next up is “The Women of Lockerbie” by Deborah Brevoort. ‘Lockerbie’ tells the story of a mother from New Jersey who roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son’s remains, which were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. This poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate was awarded the Silver Medal, Onassis International Playwriting Competition Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award.

  

The third production is suitable for the entire family—“Disney’s Mulan Jr.” Based on Disney’s Oscar-nominated film, “Disney’s Mulan Jr. is a heartwarming celebration of culture, honor and the fighting spirit. With hit songs and a story packed with action, humor and heart, this show brings ancient China to life with a modern sensibility all performed by a cast of children and young adults eighteen years and younger.

Plus, this August we’ll hold auditions for our gigantic holiday show, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats.” There are roles for dancers and performers of all ages, shapes and sizes in this certifiable Broadway showstopper, performed in the area for the very first time. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this larger-than-life experience.

Milburn’s Means Memories!

With seasonal events from Easter egg hunts to pictures with Santa, the Milburn family has been making memories since 1902!

Milburn Orchards celebrates each harvest of the year, beginning with cherries in June, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, raspberries and grapes throughout the summer, and apples throughout the fall.

They offer U-Pick Adventures, allowing families to “harvest” their own fruits. But more than that, it’s an opportunity for kids to put down the devices with computer screens and enjoy the great outdoors, while learning about food origins and healthy choices. The educational group tours are another fun way to gain in-depth knowledge about how the farm works.

The Milburn motto is “Your Farm for Family Fun” and they certainly live up to those words.
