“It’s not about science versus religion. It is about the right to think.”

One of the most famous trials in U.S. history is the inspiration for this this sizzling courtroom drama. During the Scopes “monkey trial” of 1925, the focus of the entire nation is riveted on a small town courthouse where a high school science teacher faces prison for teaching Darwin’s theories of evolution. This searing and moving drama centers on cultural conflicts still being hotly debated today – church vs. state, fundamentalism vs. freedom of belief, and the sanctity of faith vs. the right to think – in a brilliant boxing match between two of the greatest legal giants of the twentieth century.

A cunningly crafted comedic thriller about deceit, double-crosses…and stamps. A pair of half-siblings, mourning their recently deceased mother, have inherited the “crown jewel of philately” — the 1847 one- and two-penny Mauritius stamps, worth millions if authentic. A cat-and-mouse game ensues when three seedy, high-stakes collectors enter the sisters’ world, willing to do anything to claim the rare find as their own in this fast-paced, twisting, and tension-filled comedy.

Contains adult languages and situations. Recommended for mature audiences.

“…universal enough to touch a chord in every human heart.” — The New York Times

In this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece, Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro Baseball Leagues is now a trash collector with little future. Embittered and resentful, Troy builds both literal and figurative fences around his wife and son as he come to terms with his past disappointments in Wilson’s poetic, powerful, and Pulitzer Prize-winning challenge to the American dream.

Churrascaria Saudades

In days of old, in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul, cattle grazed the pampas (treeless plains), providing the Gaucho (Southern Brazilian Cowboy) with endless supplies of meat for the now famous tradition of “Churrasco” barbecues. The Gaucho would skewer large pieces of meat and slowly grill them over open-flamed pits.

In keeping with this tradition, we bring you Churrascaria Saudades.

At Churrascaria Saudades, we proudly keep this churrasco tradition alive with Gaucho chefs roasting the finest cuts of meat over open fire, serving these skewered cuts tableside. A fantastic gourmet salad bar with fresh cut vegetables, a variety of traditional side dishes to compliment the meats, signature cocktails/imported soft drinks, and a dessert menu replete with cakes, fruits, and sweets will round off the unique experience.

The poet Goethe once said, “There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it, only the present that builds and creates itself as the past withdraws.” A unique word exists, only in the Brasilian language, that best describes those longings and that word is Saudades.

The word Saudade (pronounced: saw’ DA dee, or plural: saw’ DA deez) is the Brasilian word that has no direct translation into English but is most accurately described as a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something or someone. After a unique steak experience, as can only be experienced at Churrascaria Saudades, a guest will go away with a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing to return to the experience, hence the name Saudades.

Continued on page 6

The full dinner experience is $46.00, the Salad Bar Only option is $23, children 6 and under are free, and our young guests ages 7-12 are half price.

OperaDelaware’s 2019 Festival

OperaDelaware’s 2019 Festival, a bold exploration of law, redemption, and unlikely friendships in a divided world, spotlights works that are accessible to newcomers but will also thrill lifelong opera fans. On the docket: a delightful double bill of SCALIA/ GINSBURG, composer Derrick Wang’s one-act opera about the unlikely friendship between Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia paired with TRIAL BY JURY, Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved courtroom comedy. Also presented is one of the most successful contemporary operas of our time, Jake Heggie’s DEAD MAN WALKING. Based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean with a libretto by Terrence McNally, this modern masterpiece about a death row inmate and the nun who becomes his reluctant spiritual adviser is one of the most moving and frequently performed operas of the 21st century.

For DEAD MAN WALKING, audience favorites Timothy Mix and Aleksandra Romano star as Joseph De Rocher and Sister Helen Prejean. Adrienne Danrich returns to OperaDelaware to sing the role of Sister Rose. Mezzo-soprano Jenni Bank makes her company debut as Mrs. De Rocher. Maestro Jerome Shannon conducts the OperaDelaware Chorus and Orchestra and Octavio Cardenas directs. SCALIA/GINSBURG, the comic opera by Derrick Wang, will feature soprano Jennifer Zetlan as Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A Delaware native, Ms. Zetlan is a regular at high-profile opera companies throughout the county, but got her start in OperaDelaware’s Family Opera Theater in the world premiere of Libby Larsen’s A WRINKLE IN TIME. The role of Justice Antonin Scalia will be sung by Brian Cheney, and the Commentator will be sung by OD favorite Ben Wager. Wager is a graduate of Philadelphia’s prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts and got his start in OD’s chorus. SCALIA/GINSBURG will be directed by Fenlon Lamb and conducted by Sara Jobin. Gilbert and Sullivan’s TRIAL BY JURY, directed by Chester County native Cynthia du Pont Tobias, rounds out the Festival and will feature artists from OD’s Young Artist Training Program.

All performances will take place at The Grand located at 818 N. Market St in downtown Wilmington. Tickets start at $29 and are on sale now at operade.org or by calling the OperaDelaware Box Office at 302-442-7807.

Delaware Symphony has Busy Spring Schedule

It’s a busy time for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, with concerts in both the orchestra’s Classics Series and Chamber Series, and also concerts in both Wilmington and downstate in Lewes in the next few weeks.

First, the DSO is pleased to help celebrate Leon Fleisher on his 90th birthday. For its 4th Classics Series concerts, March 22 and 24, the orchestra welcomes one of the titans of the classical stage. Leon Fleisher will join us in his 90th birthday year to perform Mozart’s 12th Piano Concerto. Music Director David Amado says of the work, “Its unfiltered buoyancy, melodic invention, and virtuosity will be at the fore as Fleisher will bring the experience of more than half a century of an astonishing career to bear as he joins the DSO for the first time. His insight, knowledge, experience, and raw musical horsepower promise to make his appearance extraordinary.” The second half features the DSO premier of Bruckner’s magnificent 7th Symphony, which Amado describes as “a masterpiece of sonic architecture. 19th Century romantic harmony, Classical form, and an ancient, otherworldly aesthetic make this symphony one of his most popular.” Performances are on Friday, March 22, at 7:30

p.m. in Copeland Hall of The Grand Opera House in downtown Wilmington, and on Sunday, March 24, at 3:00 p.m., in the Cape Henlopen High School Theatre, 1250 Kings Highway, in Lewes. One hour before each concert, Amado will lead a pre-concert talk from the stage.

In April, to conclude the DSO Chamber Series for the season, David Amado will conduct a chamber orchestra of 32 players in a concert in memory of Dorothy Chambers Flynn, a longtime supporter and much loved former staff member of the Delaware Symphony. The concert will feature the Bartok Divertimento, Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K.550, and Copland’s Quiet City, with soloists Lloyd Shorter, English Horn and Brian Kuszyk, trumpet.

The home of the Chamber Series is the beautiful Gold Ballroom of the Hotel du Pont, in downtown Wilmington. Tickets include complimentary Champagne and dessert buffet at intermission. Dining options include the Hotel’s famous Green Room, and the Lobby Café. Valet parking is available.

Tickets for all Delaware Symphony Orchestra concerts are available online at www.delawaresumphony.org and by phone at 302-656-7442.

Varicose Veins & Treatment Options

Have you ever wondered what varicose veins actually are and how they come about? When once healthy vein walls become weakened over time, the vein grows in size leaving the valves unable to do their job properly. The vein becomes large and swollen, particularly in the legs, and can lead to symptoms such as itching, swelling, and/or a tired and heavy feeling. In more severe cases, thrombophlebitis can occur. This happens when the blood sits in the large veins because it is not being returned up the leg properly and a clot forms in the superficial veins. Vein disease is progressive and if left untreated, it can lead to chronic swelling, discoloration and venous ulcers.

The first line of defense in properly diagnosing varicose veins is with an ultrasound. The ultrasound will rule out any evidence of thrombus but also look at the superficial veins in detail. The varicose veins are often an issue that is secondary to venous reflux in one of the main superficial veins. Once the problematic vein is identified, a proper treatment plan can be developed. This often involves the closure of any refluxing veins, then focusing on the bulging varicosities that are the result of the severe venous insufficiency.

Treatment of varicose veins may be different for each patient. Depending on the size and location of the individual’s vein, the doctor will determine which option will be the best fit. The two main treatment options that we offer differ in many aspects. Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive

procedure that leaves a portion of the work for your body to take care of on it’s own. Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a more involved procedure, however, the vein is permanently removed at the time of your visit.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is one treatment option which involves the injection of a medication directly into the varicose vein. This medicine will cause the blood within this vessel only to thrombose or clot off. the body’s instinct is to then fight this clot, break it up and reabsorb it over time. The medication used is referred to as a sclerosant and different concentrations are used depending on the vein size.

Another treatment option is Ambulatory Phlebectomy. This is a procedure that involves multiple small incisions through which the varicose vein is then removed in sections. This procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed in the comfort of our office. We use local anesthesia and offer the option of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for ambulatory phlebectomies which help to relax the patient for a comfortable experience.

We offer free verbal vein screenings each month to allow patients to express their concerns about their veins. This gives patients the opportunity to ask questions which helps us to better navigate you through the process of properly treating your venous insufficiency. Come to one of our FREE vein screenings or call (302) 731-0001 to schedule a free consult today.

The Candlelight Theatre, Delaware’s first dinner theatre, celebrates 50 years

The Candlelight Theatre, located in historic Ardentown, Del., a short drive from Chester County, and 10 minutes from downtown Wilmington provides an all-inclusive evening of “Dining and Entertainment, Beyond Your Expectations.”

The Candlelight Theatre’s colorful history began in 1931, when a barn in Arden was converted to a theatre and called The Robin Hood Theatre. That was when summer stock theatre came to Delaware, where it remained through the 1950s. In 1969, after 5 months of intensive renovations by a team of hard-working volunteers, the barn was transformed into the “Candlelight Music Dinner Theatre”, Delaware’s 1st Dinner Theatre under the ownership of Julian and Annabelle Borris and John and Lena O'Toole, nurturing the talents of many, including Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman, film star Bruce Willis, and Broadway musical star Diane Fratantoni. In 2006, TCT became a non-profit and continues the tradition of nurturing young performers and producing six shows annually.

Operating as a theater venue for over 75 years, the stage of this quaint barn comes alive every weekend year-round. In addition to musicals, TCT presents events such as a monthly Comedy Club, Just Drag, the annual blues festival, and a variety of cabaret acts. Summer camps are offered in partnership with DelArts Conservatory of Bear, Del., providing education and performance opportunities for ages 6 to 18.

Tickets for mainstage musicals are $63 for adults, $33 for children, and include fullcourse buffet and show. Cash bar is available, as well as free parking. Group discounts are available.
