Project Browser Before you begin‌

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Start REVIT and click on Structural Template to create a new project.

Note the Views section of the Project Browser. Your current view is Bold. Try double clicking any one of the views to open the preferred view.

3. Below the Views section click the + beside Families. Note all the Families listed by Category. Try mining down in the families to see the family Types. You

4. If you Right click anywhere in the Project Browser you can search for content and views. Close when done.

On the View tab of the Ribbon go back to the User Interface button and note the Browser Organization button. Inside there you can set how REVIT will sort and organize the Project Browser.

User Interface Before you begin‌

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Start up REVIT and before you open a file click the File pulldown and then the Options button.

2. Inside the Options dialog have a look at the User Interface section.

3. Try looking into the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box to add or edit keyboard shortcuts.

4. Have a look into the Double click options to see what the factory settings are and change them if you want. You can also change the screen theme from Light to Dark depending on your personal preference

5. Next have a look at the graphics section for more interface color options. The size of the font of your temporary dimensions is also set here and it’s set to ‘8’. Most people increase this to 10 or 12. Close the options dialog box and return to the Recent Files screen.

6. Next, create a new empty file by clicking and using the default Structural Template file.

7. Inside the new project, close the Project Browser and Properties palettes by clicking the ‘X’ on the upper corners.

8. To re-open them back up again go to the View tab on the ribbon and on the far right click User Interface then Project Browser & Properties.

9. Close the REVIT project and no need to save.

Settings Before you begin‌

1. Start REVIT and click on Structural Template to create a new project based on the default out of the box Structural Project.

2. Click the Flyout on the Structure Panel to see all the structural settings. Note all the tabs at the top of the settings dialog box.

3. Have a look at some of the symbolic representation options.

4. Have a look at the Load Cases tab.

5. This is where you may need direction from the structural engineer.

6. Setting here should be saved in your company template file so you don’t have to re-do this for each project.

7. Next have a look at the other 3 tabs available for settings.

8. Once again this is most likely going to require the input of a structural engineer.

Starting a New Structural Project Before you begin‌

1. Start REVIT and click on Structural Template to create a new project based on the default out of the box Structural Project.

Alternatively you can click the New button and use the drop down list or browse to your company template file where ever it may be. REVIT Template files all use the extension *.RTE

Levels and Grids Before you begin‌

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Start REVIT and click on Structural Template to create a new project based on the default out of the box Structural Project. By default this Autodesk supplied project will open with the Level 2 floor plan as current.

2. It’s always best to create the levels before the grids as the grids vertical extents will go from the lowest level up to the highest level.

3. Open the South Elevation view to see the levels and then click the Levels button from the Structural tab to start the level tool.

4. Click from left to right to add two new levels. Note in the Project Browser that by default REVIT makes floor plans of the new levels.

5. Now switch to the Level 2 floor plan view to draw the grids. Click the Grid button on the Structural tab of the ribbon to start the grid tool.

6. Pick some point on the screen to create a grid layout. The spacing isn’t critical for this exercise. Use the Shift key to ensure the grids are orthographic or you may choose to place grids diagonally.

7. Next you can rename or number the grids after the fact by clicking the bubble twice.

8. Now switch back to the South Elevation view and click on a Level line to highlight it. Use the hollow 3D circle grip on the level ends to adjust the length of the levels to fit nicely with the grids.

9. Then do the same from the East elevation view.

10. Note the little Lock alignment icon. If you unlock it and drag the level end it will not pull the other levels with it. By default REVIT tries to keep the level ends aligned.

11. You can turn on and off the level symbols with the check box.

12. You can zoom in and click the break line to create a dog leg in the level symbol position. Then use the solid blue grips to position the level symbol.

13. To make it straight again just drag the grips back into flat alignment.

Structural Columns Before you begin‌

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Start this exercise by opening the file <structural-columns.rvt> . This project will open in the Level 2 Structural floor plan.

2. Note from the Families section of the project browser that this project only has two structural column families loaded. Each column family has several column types however.

3. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s load some more structural column families. From the Insert tab on the ribbon click, Load Families. Then structural families, then Wood then Glulam Western Species Column and click Ok. www.globaletraining.ca

Next REVIT will open a Type Library of column sizes. Scroll down the list and use your Control key on the keyboard to pick both the 5.125x12 column and the 5.125 x18 column then click Ok. Now when you look at the project browse you will see two more structural column families loaded. Fell free to repeat this loading process and select more column types of concrete, wood or steel.

4. Now lets double click and open the Level 1 structural floor plan.

5. Next start the Column tool from the Structural tab on the ribbon.

6. From the properties palette, click the Type Selector to choose the 5.125x12 column.

7. Next change the placement option from Depth (extending down from the current level) to Height (extending upward from the current level).

8. Now you can click anywhere on the screen to place a column. Note that as you near grids and intersecting grids the column will snap to it. Hit your spacebar as you place the column to rotate it as you place it. Place a few columns at grid intersections.

9. Now select those placed columns and delete them with the delete key. We want all the columns gone for the next step.

10. Now start the structural column tool again. REVIT will remember all your last settings so no need to reset height etc. This time before placing the columns, on the ribbon on the right click At Grids and then using a crossing box (right to left) select all the grids (or manually pick the grids you want with the control key for multi selection) and finally click finish. You have just placed a column at all grid intersections extending upward from level 1.

11. Next click the REVIT 3D button to see the columns in 3D.

12. Close the file and you can choose to save or not save your work.

Walls Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

1. Open the REVIT file <walls.rvt> By default the project will open in floor plan level 1 view.

From the structural tab start the regular wall tool and notice that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no lack of options and properties to check and select from.

Since we are on level 1 we want to change the top constraint to be up to level 2 and then change the depth option to height.

4. We are also going to turn on the chain effect and go with wall centerline for the location placement.

Now we can start picking points on the screen.

As you drag you can read the distance and either pick points or type in a distance.

Switch to a 3D view to see the walls from and angle.

Hover over one of the walls and hit the tab key once then click to select all the walls that are end to end.

Then in the type selector in the properties palette change the walls to a different typ. Click nothing to see the change.

10. Change the visibility to Shaded to see the wall materials and color.

11. Save the file or discard the changes.

Floors Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

1. Start REVIT and click on Structural Template to create a new project based on the default out of the box Structural Project. By default the project will open in the level 2 structural floor plan.

2. Note in the project browser what floor families this project starts with.

3. Start the floor tool from the structural tab of the ribbon and select Floor: Structural.

4. Before you start to sketch note the floor properties. You can change the floor type, structure, level and level offset just to mention a few contributing factors.

5. REVIT goes into Sketch Mode. Here we need to sketch the perimeter of the floor with linework given an assortment of line options and the perimeter must be a filleted closed polygon and may or may not contain internal closed polygons. In the sample below we used straight lines and the circle sketch tools. Note that REVIT will snap to the linework geometry as you sketch. As you drag the mouse you can use the shift key to keep lines ortho and you can also type in a distance as you drag such as 40â&#x20AC;&#x2122;2 or 10m.

6. Once you are satisfied with the sketch you can click the green Finish button and if your polygons are properly closed the floor is created and highlighted. Switch to a 3D view to see the floor from a 3D angle.

7. After the floor is created you can further manipulate the floor type and properties from the properties palette.

8. Close the file and you can choose to save or not save your work.

Understanding Foundations Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

1. Open the REVIT file <understanding-foundations.rvt> By default the project will open in the 3D Startup view which is locked. Use the regular {3D} view to pivot, swivel and pan around.

2. Open the Level 1 floor plan.

3. On the view tab click Tile Windows to tile the screen to see both views.

4. Type ZA (zoom all) to maximize the views.

5. Click into the 3D view window to make it current.

6. On the Structure tab click the wall tool on the foundation panel.

7. Click each wall one at a time to place a strip footing foundation under the walls. Notice you see the footing in both windows.

8. Use the undo too to undo the 4 wall footings.

9. Start the same wall foundation tool again. This time hover over one wall, hit the tab key once on the keyboard to highlight all the walls, then click to place all 4 at once.

10. Now we will change the footing lines on the plan view to dashed. Click into the level 1 floor plan view to make it current.

11. Start the Linework too from the modify tab on the ribbon. In the linetype selector click on Footing linetype.

12. Click all the footing lines in the level 1 floor plan view. Feel free to zoom and pan around with the mouse while button as you do the linework.

13. Zoom into the interior columns in the level 1 floor plan view. Start the isolated foundation tool and then click on the columns. Use the spacebar to rotate the footing as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s being placed.

14. Repeat steps 11 and 12 to convert the isolated footings to linetype footing.

15. Close the file with or without saving.

Move and Copy Before you begin…

1. Open the REVIT file <move-and-copy.rvt> By default the project will open in the 3D Startup view which is locked. Use the regular {3D} view to pivot, swivel and pan around.

Open the 02 – Floor Plan view and zoom into the area shown in red.

3. Select a beam (or any goup of objects) then click the copy tool and note the options bar where you can set multiple, constrain (ortho) and Disjoin (unjoins new objects). After you click your start point on the screen then pick another point on the screen or drag the beam and type in a distance like 5’4 or 6.6m. Copies shown in blue below.

4. Move works exactly the same way as copy except it moves the object instead of copying it.

Other editing Tools Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

1. Open the REVIT file <other-editing-tools.rvt> By default the project will open in the Level 1 floor plan.

2. Note the Before and After images in this exercise.

3. Zoom into the walls area. On the modify tab click Trim / Extend to Corner.

Click one wall then another wall and it will fillet the corner. Click the wall side closet to where you want the corner to be formed. See before and after below.

5. Click the Trim Extend Single Element tool. Click the extend to be extended to . . . click the wall to be extended. Repeat as required.

6. Select the walls shown (not the vertical wall on the far right) , click the Mirror Pick Access tool then pick and axis point (middle of wall on the far right) to mirror about. Note the option to make a copy or not.

7. Next we will array some columns. Click the concrete 24 x 30 column in the view and then click array. Note the options bar. Type in 6 for number then drag to the right and pick a point or type in a distance.

8. Next we will use the align tool to align wall faces. Start the align tool from the modify tab. Then select the alignment edge, then select the wall to get aligned. Use the horizontal lines on the left as the alignment edges. See before and after image below.

Selection Before you begin…

1. Open the REVIT file <selection.rvt> By default the project will open in the 3D Startup view which is locked. Use the regular {3D} view to pivot, swivel and pan around.

There are many ways to select objects in REVIT as follows: Try these methods in any view. Selected elements turn blue by default.

Single element: selection by clicking on it.

Crossing box: click from right to left crossing any objects Window box: click from left to right. Objects have to be 100% inside the box to be selected.

Ctrl key while selecting adds to the selection set. Note the + indicator.

Shift key while selecting removes elements from the selection set. Note the – indicator.

Tab key while hovering over an element cycles through nearby objects for selection.

Filter dialog box lets you add and remove specific categories during selection.

Right click on an object and click ‘select all instances > visible in the view > in entire project

3. You can save a selection set by clicking the Save selection tool and give it a name. Then to recall that saved selection just click load after the fact. You can also Edit that saved selection set.

4. Use the Filter selection to fine tune a large selection set of various elements.

Adding Tagging and Annotating Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

1. Open the REVIT file <adding-tagging-and-annotating.rvt> By default the project will open in the 02 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Floor plan view.

Click the text tool from the quick access toolbar.

3.

Zoom into somewhere on the screen where you want to place a text note.

4.

Note the text type in the properties palette.

5. Click the edit type button to see more details about the text type nd cancel after review.

6. Note the text formatting options on the ribbon.

7.

Leave the formatting as is and click two points on the screen to for a box where the text will go.

When done type click outside the text box.

After the text is done and you have to click out. Then click the text once to see the control grips to stretch the paragraph, rotate or move it.

9.

To edit the text select it once, pause then click inside the text box. Do your text editing then click out to complete.

10. To add (or remove) leaders click the text then use the add leaders button on the ribbon.

11. Most tagging is done in REVIT with a single tool named tag by category from the annotate tab of the ribbon. Start the command then click a beam or column or slab or footing etc. . .. Also note the options from the options bar. Tags can have leaders that are free form or fixed.

12. For the beam do not use a leader and for the columns use a leader with free end.

Dimensions Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Open the REVIT file <dimensions.rvt> By default the project will open in the Level 1 floor plan.

2. Zoom into the upper part of the floor plan. Start the aligned dimension tool from the quick access toolbar. Then start picking the vertical grid lines. After picking the grids you want to dimension (in no particular order) pick and empty space to place the dimension string.

3. To modify a dimension string, click the dimension object then click edit witness line on the ribbon.

Then you can add and remove dimension witness (extension) lines by clicking existing lines to remove or new objects to add to the dimension string.

4. Click the EQ symbol on a dimension string to make all the spacings equal.

On the annotations tab click the angular dimension tool. Then select an edge > another edge (thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; no parallel) > click a point to place the dimension.

6. Click a dimension to highlight it and note the blue grip point. The grip controls help mode the dimension parts around including the text. The lock icon will lock the dimension so the object being dimensioned is constrained.

Options for opening a Revit Structure project file(s):  

Begin by dragging it directly into the application or by using the Open command from the Application menu.

Double click a Revit Structure file, but be aware that if you have more than one version of Revit Structure installed on your computer, the file will open in the last version of Revit Structure you used.

Please ensure you save all your projects to your computer as directed by the Let Me Try instructions.

Let Me Try!

In this exercise, you will create a section view, an elevation view, and a quantity schedule for the project

Opening the Existing Project In this section, you will open the project file.

1. To open the project file, choose Open > Project from the Application Menu; the Open dialog box is displayed.

2. In this dialog box, browse to the location C:/ Revit_Structure_2018_Essentials/Documenting Models and Creating Families and then choose the c07_Industrial-Complex_tut2.rvt for Imperial or M_c07_Industrial-Complex_tut2.rvt for Metric project file.

3. Next, choose the Open button from the Open dialog box; the selected project file opens in the drawing window in the Entry structural plan view.

Generating Section Views In this section, you will generate a sectional view for the project using the Section tool.

1. Double-click on the Foundation Level node under the Structural Plans head in the Project Browser; the Foundation Level structural plan opens.

2. Choose the Section tool from the Create panel in the View tab; the Modify | Section tab is displayed.

3. In the Properties palette, ensure that the Section : Building Section option is selected in the Type Selector drop-down list.

4. Move the cursor between the grid bubbles of grid B and grid C and then click to specify the start point of the grid line.

5. Move the cursor horizontally across the building model until it has crossed the building model. Click at the desired point, as shown in the image below, to specify the endpoint of the section line. The section view is created and the name Section 1 is displayed in the Section : (Building Section) head in the Project Browser.

6. In the Properties palette, scroll the palette, if required, and click in the value field of the View Name parameter and enter Section-X to replace the existing value.

7. Choose the Apply button in the Properties palette.

8. Next, choose the Split Segment tool from the Section panel of the Modify | Views tab; a pencil mark replaces the cursor.

9. Place the cursor on the section line; the section line gets highlighted. Next, click on the section line at a suitable point between grid 5 and grid 6. As you move the cursor downward right, the split section line also moves. Place the cursor along with the split cursor line at a suitable location below grid 1 and then click; the section line appears, as shown in the image below.

The section view is created and the name Section-X is displayed in the Sections (Building Section) head in the Project Browser.

10. Click on the '+' symbol on the left of the Sections (Building Section) head in the Project Browser to display the section names created.

11. Double-click on the name Section-X to display the corresponding section view in the drawing window, as shown in the image below.

Generating the Quantity Schedule for Beams In this section, you will generate schedule for displaying the quantity of beams and their associated properties used in the project.

1. Invoke the Schedule/Quantities tool from View > Create > Schedules drop-down; the New Schedule dialog box is displayed.

2. In this dialog box, select the Structural Framing option from the Category list box and then choose the OK button; the Schedule Properties dialog box is displayed.

3. Select the Count option from the Available fields list box. Then, press and hold the CTRL key and select the following options from the list box: Cut Length, Family and Type, Length, Structural Usage, and Volume.

4. Release the CTRL key and choose the Add button; the selected options are added in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box.

5. Click on the Family and Type option in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box and click on the Move Up button until the option is placed first in the list.

6. Reorder all the options in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box, as shown in the image below.

7. Choose the Sorting/Grouping tab in the Schedule Properties dialog box and then select the Family and Type option from the Sort by drop-down list. Ensure that the Ascending radio button is selected.

8. Select the Header check box below the Sort by drop-down list.

9. Select the Grand totals check box and clear the Itemize every instance check box.

10. Choose the Formatting tab. Next, in the Fields list box, select the Count option and then select the Calculate totals check box.

11. Repeat step 10 and select the Calculate totals check boxes for the following options in the Fields list box: Cut Length, Length, and Volume.

12. Choose the OK button; the schedule is displayed, as shown in the image below.

Generating the Material Takeoff Schedule In this section, you will generate the Material Takeoff Schedule for the foundation elements used in the project.

1. Invoke the Material Takeoff tool from View > Create > Schedules drop-down; the New Material Takeoff dialog box is displayed.

2. In the Category list box, select the Structural Foundations option. Next, choose the OK button; the Material Takeoff Properties dialog box is displayed.

3. In the Available fields list box, select the Count option. Then, press and hold the CTRL key and select the following options in the list box: Elevation at Bottom, Family and Type, Material: Area, Material: Name, and Material: Volume.

4. Release the CTRL key and choose the Add button; the selected options will be added in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box.

5. Click on the Family and Type option in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box and choose the Move Up button until the option is placed first in the list.

6. Repeat step 5 to reorder all options in the Scheduled fields (in order) list box, as shown in the image below.

7. In the Material Takeoff Properties dialog box, choose the Sorting/Grouping tab and then select the Family and Type option from the Sort by drop-down list. Ensure that the Ascending radio button is selected.

8. Select the Header check box below the Sort by drop-down list.

9. Select the Grand totals check box and ensure that the Itemize every instance check box is cleared.

10. Choose the Formatting tab, and then in the Fields list box, select the Count option. Next, select the Calculate totals check box in the Field formatting area.

11. Repeat step 10 and select the Calculate totals check box corresponding to each of the following options in the Fields list box: Material: Area and Material: Volume.

12. Choose the OK button; the Material Takeoff Schedule is displayed, as shown in the image below.

Creating a Callout View In this section, you will create a callout view.

1. Double-click on the Second Floor node under the Structural Plans head of the Project Browser; the Second Floor structural plan is displayed.

2. To create a callout view, invoke the Callout tool from the Create panel of the View tab.

3. In the View Control Bar select the 1/2" = 1'-0" for Imperial or 1:20 for Metric option from the Scale drop-down list.

4. Now draw the callout by clicking at the first and opposite corner, as shown in the image below to create a rectangular callout.

5. After creating the rectangular callout, select it; the Modify | Views tab is displayed.

6. In the Properties palette of the selected callout, click in the value fields corresponding to the Display Model and Detail Level parameters and select the Halftone and Fine options from the drop-down lists, respectively.

7. In the Properties palette, click in the value field of the View Name parameter and enter the text Beam -Column Detail to replace the existing value. Choose the Apply button.

8. Double-click on the Beam-Column Detail node under the Structural Plans head in the Project Browser to display the callout view.

You can sketch details in the callout view displayed by using various annotation tools available in the Annotate tab.

Saving the Project In this section of the tutorial, you will save the project file using the Save As tool.

1. To save the project file, choose Save As > Project from the Application Menu; the Save As dialog box is displayed.

2. In this dialog box, browse to C:/revit_2018_structural_project/c08 and enter c08_IndustrialComplex_tut2 for Imperial or M_c08_Industrial-Complex_tut2 for Metric in the File name edit box.

3. Choose the Save button; the Save As dialog box closes and the project file is saved.

Closing the Project To close the project, choose the Close option from the Application Menu.

Schedules Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Open the REVIT file <schedules.rvt> By default the project will open in the 3D Startup view which is locked. Use the regular {3D} view to pivot, swivel and pan around.

2. On the view tab click the schedules tool > Schedule/Quantities > Structural Columns > OK

3. Add these 6 fields shown below to the schedule by double clicking them on the left hand side.

Try re-opening the schedule view and playing around by adding / removing different fields or some of the other settings for sorting, formatting, appearance and filtering etc.

4. On the screen pick the camera location (away from the building) then click the second point towards and past the building. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t place the camera too fat away as it will be outside the crop region.

5. REVIT creates a 3D perspective view.

6. Note that has the analytical model turned on. Turn it off with the toggle at the bottom of the screen.

8. You can also duplicate a 3D view with a right click.

9. You can use the 3D View tool to activate the default global 3D view, make a perspective camera view or a 3D walkthrough view.

Analysis Before you begin…

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Open the REVIT file <analysis.rvt> By default the project will open in the 3D Startup view which is locked. Use the regular {3D} view to pivot, swivel and pan around.

2. In the project browser right click the 02 – Floor plan view > duplicate > duplicate. To make an new copy of that floor plan.

Right click on the 02 – Floor Copy 1 view and rename it 02 – Floor AM (analytical model).

Open the newly created floor plan.

At the bottom of the screen turn on the display of the analytical model stick frame symbiology.

Open up the default 3D view.

Right click the default 3D view in the project browser to duplicate the view and then right click the new view and rename it 3D AM.

10. Type V V on the keyboard to go into the view visibility graphics override dialog box.

11. Turn off all model elements.

12. Now all you see is the analytical model.

Massing Before you beginâ&#x20AC;Ś

Please download all the Dataset files from the course Resources and place them on the root of your C: drive.

1. Start a new conceptual massing family from the recent files window.

2. Click on the mass.rft template file and click OK. 3. Open the level 1 floor plan and using the line tool sketch a building footprint as shown below.

Use the shift key to keep lines ortho if required.

6. Now you can hover over faces and edges and corners to get control stretch grips to easily modify the solid mass.

7. Double click on the dashed level line edge to make it your current work plane.

Using the circle tool from the draw panel draw a circle at the corner of the mass.

With the circle you have to select between a cylindrical or spherical mass. When done it removes material from the solid mass.

10. Save the file or discard the changes.

1. Open the REVIT file <reinforcements.rvt> By default the project will open in level 1 floor plan.

On the properties palette click the type selector and pick a concrete rectangular beam 16 x 32.

Click two points to draw the new concrete beam.

Zoom in to the beam and create a section from the view tab of the ribbon.

Double click the section bubble to open the section view of the beam.

Zoom in closer to the beam.

10. Start the rebar tool from the structure tab.

11. Set the placement plane to current work plane and placement orientation to parallel to work plane.

12. Set the bar type on the right hand side to a rebar shape T1 stirrup and place the stirrup inside the beam clear cover. Hit ESC when you are done or click modify.

13. Start the rebar tool again and set the bar type to shape 00, straight rebar with no bends.

14. Set the placement plane to current work plane and placement orientation to perpendicular to work plane.

15. Place one rebar in the upper right corner. Then hit ESC to end the command.

16. Open the default 3D view and type in ZA for zoom all.

17. The view is in wireframe with the analytical model turned on.

18. Select the stirrup rebar and then change the layout rules to be maximum spacing of 1â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Then just click into the screen to finish the command.

19. Select the straight rebar and change the layout rule to fixed number of 2, then click into the screen.

20. Open the section 1 view again.

21. Copy the pair of top rebar down twice with the copy tool.

22. Open the 3D view and you can see all the rebar placed.
