YOUR SEASON

FALL ISSUE 2025

FOR THE JOYS OF SENIOR LIVING

Sharing Our Passion for Exceptional Living

Hello everyone,

I am excited to introduce myself as the Senior Director of Brand Management for All Seasons. I have a passion for customer service, brand development, and creating memorable experiences for our residents and families.

This summer has been such a wonderful season across our All Seasons communities—from lively outdoor concerts and garden gatherings to refreshing summer socials and wellness activities. We hope you’ve had the chance to enjoy these moments and create lasting memories with neighbors and friends. Seeing our communities come alive with energy, laughter, and connection is a true reminder of why we do what we do.

A little about me: I was born in Michigan, moved to Europe at a young age, and proudly called Italy my home. While living near Rome, I began my career in the hotel industry and later had the unique opportunity to work aboard a 3,000-passenger luxury cruise ship, an experience that taught me the true value of hospitality on a global scale.

In 2003, I returned to Michigan and joined an upscale apartment community in the heart of Oakland County. This led to a leadership role as General Manager of a large hotel and eventually to a new chapter with Beztak. For the past 11 years, I have been fortunate to grow alongside an incredible team, beginning as the Executive Director at the opening of All Seasons Birmingham and being honored with a promotion to my current role in 2018.

Today, I work closely with the ownership group and the community teams to ensure our brand standards are upheld and elevated across every All Seasons community. It is very rewarding to be part of a team that is dedicated to delivering exceptional service and meaningful experiences.

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and spending quality time with family and friends.

I am truly excited for what is ahead, and I look forward to connecting with many of you as we continue to grow the All Seasons brand. While summer has been a season full of joy and activity, we are equally excited for the months ahead. Fall will bring cozy gatherings, festive celebrations, and new opportunities to stay engaged and connected with your community.

National Wellness Month

National Wellness Month is an initiative designed to promote overall wellbeing by focusing on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. We celebrated with a variety of dynamic events, including:

Pet Therapy, brought joy and comfort to residents and an overall feeling of relaxation. According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, the need for emotional support from animals spans every age group. Therapy dogs can offer a special kind of comfort that humans simply can’t replicate. Just one visit with a pet can lift spirits for days, and that boost in mood can also create positive effects throughout the body.

Sound-bathing, which is an ancient therapeutic practice that uses various aspects of sound, such as vibrations, frequencies, and rhythms, to promote relaxation in the body, mind, and spirit. A 2022 study found that “singingbowl” sound healing was associated with increases in spiritual well-being and a reduction in tension and depressed moods. Researchers suggest that these effects can be experienced even in a single session, especially for those who are completely new to the practice. Another study in 2020 found that after a Himalayan singing bowl sound bath, participants displayed relaxation in their heart rates, stress levels and lower levels of anger, fatigue and confusion. Researchers suggest that sound baths are also safe, low-cost interventions for sleep disruptions, chronic pain and anxiety.

Importance of Sleep workshops, where we learned about sleep remedies!

Many of us know that we feel better after “a good night’s sleep” and are more grumpy or foggy if sleep-deprived. And there is now robust evidence similarly supporting that sleep is critical to not only our physical health but also our mental health. So remember - don’t sleep on sleep!

For Jerald, the most rewarding part of his work is knowing that his efforts directly impact residents’ daily comfort and happiness. “I believe that we are here to make our residents feel at home and to be the difference in their day. I also think it is up to us to create new and better tomorrows for our communities,” he shares.

When he’s not at work, this born-and-raised Michigan resident enjoys making his home shine through renovations, remodels, and various woodworking projects. His latest adventure? She curated The Art of Dining: Food Culture in the Islamic World and co-led the reinstallation of the DIA’s Asian art collection. Patricia “Pat” Schifano holds a B.A. and M.A. in Art Education from N.J.C.U. and is a retired art teacher from the Bayonne, N.J. school system. She also enjoyed a successful career as a professional floral and event designer. Her handcrafted jewelry can be found at Tohono Chul Park, Hilton El Conquistador, and the Tucson Museum of Art Gift Shop.

Pat’s artistic journey began at the age of seven when her mother gave her a box of colored clay. “It opened a Pandora’s box of wild and crazy things that I, as an only child, learned I could do to entertain myself,” she recalls. Early on, Pat realized that being an art teacher was her calling. “I never stopped making stuff. Boredom is death. I must be making something all the time,” she says. Currently, Pat is creating alcohol-ink stained, textured copper earrings as well as metalstamped silver earrings and necklaces set with semi-precious stones. She is also brushing up on her drawing skills in a Monday afternoon pastel class offered at All Seasons.

“All Seasons is the perfect place for me to be me and to share whenever I can,” Pat says Pat has been married to her husband of 49 years, Patrick, a fellow retired educator and department chairman from the Bayonne School System. What We Are Reading

Seasons Naples“Absolution” by Alice McDermott in September.

Absolution is set in 1963 Saigon and follows American military wives as the Vietnam War escalates, centering on naive newlywed Tricia and formidable corporate spouse Charlene. Recalled through Tricia’s memories at the request of Charlene’s daughter, the story explores moral duty, women’s limitations and desires, and the costs of their “charitable” work. Their personal struggles mirror the unintended consequences of America’s intervention in Vietnam.

“Every book begins and ends with other people — the readers who suggest the book to us and encourage us to read it, the talented author who crafted each word, the fascinating individuals we meet inside the pages — and the readers we discuss and share the book with when we finish.”

Division Street is full of secrets. An impulsive lie begets a secret—one which will forever haunt the Wilf family. And the Shenkmans, who move into the neighborhood many years later, bring secrets of their own. Spanning fifty kaleidoscopic years, on a street—and in a galaxy—where stars collapse and stories collide, these two families become bound in ways they never could have imagined.

Resident Journeys

DISCOVERING COMMUNITY, FRIENDSHIP, & HOME

At All Seasons, the heart of our community is found in the residents who call it home. Each story is unique, but all share a common theme, finding joy, purpose, and connection.

This month, we are honored to share the journey of Kay and Michael Melet, whose decision to move here wasn’t made overnight. With a little family encouragement, they discovered not only a beautiful place to live but also a vibrant community filled with friendship, comfort, and belonging.

Kay’s words speak for themselves, and what follows is her story, shared entirely from her perspective—a wonderful reminder of why choosing senior living can be such a gift.

Our oldest son from Chapel Hill, NC, and our youngest son from San Francisco, CA, came to our wonderful condo in Flint, MI, for an intervention. They insisted we move to senior living and make this change while we could still do it for ourselves. Since we were only 80 and 81, and doing just fine, we did nothing about their insistence.

Each night one of them would call us to see where we had visited and what we were going to do about it. This went on for a few months, and they became very aggravated with us. Knowing their sister lives in Ann Arbor, they decided to put together a list of five places for us to visit. We still did nothing.

Their calls became more and more intense, so we finally decided to visit one of their suggestions.

Reluctantly, we drove to Ann Arbor to see the first place on their list. We came to All Seasons Ann Arbor with the worst attitude, just wanting to appease the boys.

Michael dropped me off at the front door and went to park the car. My first impression upon entering was that this place is gorgeous. Sitting in the lobby was one of the residents. I spoke with her and found her to be absolutely lovely. My thinking was that if there were more people like her living here, I could perhaps do this.

We were then greeted by Heather, who took us on a tour of the building and showed us the model rooms. In the apartments, we loved the wooden floors and the fact that the carpet was beige, just like our home in Flint. Heading back to the office to discuss details, I began to feel we could live here.

On our way home, we called our sons and said, “We will make you happy and move to All Seasons Ann Arbor.” Their response was, “Oh no, you must visit the other four places on our list.” This made us very upset, but we decided to visit the other four quickly, knowing in advance that if we were moving to Ann Arbor, All Seasons Ann Arbor was where we would want to live. We were right, as none of the other four could compare to what All Seasons Ann Arbor offered.

We quickly signed a lease and began preparing for the move. Well, little did we know that it wasn’t just the beauty and offerings of All Seasons Ann Arbor we would love, but, first and foremost, the residents here. We have made so many wonderful friends, each with fantastic stories of their backgrounds. We could relate to everyone. For us, after living here for almost three years, it is our new friends for which we are most grateful.

The amenities are amazing—the library, the art and pottery room, the gym, the pool, the gorgeous auditorium with its fantastic programs and daily movies, and the food (which is actually too good). The staff are probably the second-best part of living here. All are so friendly and caring. We have nothing about which to complain.

We have actually apologized to our sons for our rotten behavior, as they were right. Life couldn’t be better for us.

Resident, All Seasons Ann Arbor

Kay and Michael’s story highlights how moving to senior living can bring comfort, connection, and joy. Their experience is just one example of how residents across All Seasons communities find a place to call home, make lasting friendships, and enjoying a vibrant lifestyle. If you’re considering your next chapter, we invite you to visit a community near you and see how life at All Seasons can be both fulfilling and rewarding.

Estate Planning

PROTECT YOUR LOVED ONES AND YOUR LEGACY

Many people assume estate planning is only for the wealthy, but the truth is, it’s for anyone who wants to make life easier for their loved ones. Without an estate plan, state law decides who inherits your assets, who cares for your children, and even who makes your medical decisions if you are unable to do so. This process can be time-consuming, expensive, and emotionally stressful for your family.

Estate planning gives you control. It allows you to outline your wishes so your family isn’t left guessing or struggling during difficult times. At a minimum, every adult should consider:

A Will or Trust –

Specify who inherits your property, how it’s divided, and any conditions. Trusts can also help avoid probate and maintain privacy.

Powers of Attorney –

Appoint trusted individuals to handle financial and healthcare decisions if you cannot.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is estate planning, and why is it important?

Estate planning creates documents that outline how your assets, healthcare, and family matters will be handled if you become incapacitated or pass away.

What’s the difference between a will and a trust?

A will directs who receives your property after your passing but must go through probate court. A trust can help avoid probate, keep matters private, and allow you to set conditions for how your assets are distributed.

How can I protect my assets and minimize taxes?

Tools like trusts, lifetime gifts, and proper beneficiary designations can safeguard your assets and reduce tax burdens.

Who should I choose as my executor or trustee?

Select someone trustworthy, responsible, and organized. Family members are common choices, but some people prefer a professional or corporate trustee.

How often should I review my estate plan?

Every 3–5 years—or sooner if you experience major life changes like marriage, divorce, children, or significant financial shifts.
