OKTOBERFEST WITH LOIS KEHOE & FRIENDS

CHRYSALIS CHAMBER PLAYERS

OCTOBER

NOVEMBER

Everyone’s favorite jazz chanteuse is here to help us celebrate the Oktoberfest! President & Secretary of Naples Jazz Society and vocalist with Naples Jazzmasters Band, Lois Kehoe brings with her a great horn section in Lee Thornburg and Marsh DeMott, the Naples Jazzmasters.

Formed in 2011, the Chrysalis Chamber Players is a non-profit chamber music ensemble, committed to performing a kaleidoscope of high caliber chamber music. Musicians of the Chrysalis Chamber Players have performed at the Marlboro Music Festival, Banff Centre for the Arts, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Verbier and Lucerne Festivals in Switzerland, and with the Louisville, Naples, Vancouver, Edmonton, New World and Richmond Symphonies, among others. Chrysalis is the recipient of a Yale Alumni Ventures Grant, enabling the group to reach out to students through residencies in south Florida schools. Flutist Meghan Brachle and pianist Catherine Lan will perform a program ranging from the Baroque to Impressionist era, as well as feature works by American composers in order to identify, develop, and promote the American culture.

Did You Know? Maybe it sounds exaggerated to call Lederhosen "functional" clothing, but they can definitely do more than most people think. The deerskin is pleasantly soft and makes the pants robust and durable. They protect against harsh weather, keeping you warm in the cold, and cool in the heat. They also tolerate liquids like rain or beer quite well!

VICTORIAN CAROLERS

PETER BERGIN

DECEMBER

JANUARY

The Victorian Carolers have joyfully brought the sounds of the season to Southwest Florida since 2005. Become immersed in the mood of the holiday season with the superb vocal stylings of this polished group of talented performers. Dressed in elegant Victorian costume, the a capella vocal quartet will impart a festive spirit to the event with harmonious renditions of the most-beloved holiday tunes. Part of the group’s endearing charm is in their spot-on portrayal of Victorian-era carolers in this not-to-miss vocal presentation.

Peter’s mission is to celebrate life through music and stories, and he especially loves sharing the rhythms and history of ragtime piano. Classically trained, Peter took a midlife leap of faith and embarked on a full-time music career after twenty-four years working in computer software at well-known Silicon Valley companies. Peter’s debut CD, Ragtime In Time, features the classic ragtime of Joplin, Scott, and Lamb. His second CD, Beyond the Maple Leaf, is an all-Joplin release performed on vintage pianos. Peter is widely sought-after for his ability to synthesize and present early American music, and he brings his programs to national ragtime festivals across the country, including the West Coast Ragtime Festival. Playing and singing in the heart of community brings Peter immense joy and satisfaction. He looks forward to bringing ragtime to audiences everywhere as a testament to America's original popular music.

VALENTINE'S DAY WITH THE NIGHT TRAIN BAND

ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH ANDY WAHLBERG

FEBRUARY

MARCH

It was back in February 1990 when five working musicians met for a cup of coffee, and decided to put a band together. The early days of Night Train brought many requests for tunes of the 1940’s big band era. That’s where the name Night Train comes from. Nothing from the band is pre-recorded; everything comes to you directly from the hearts of the musicians, at that very moment. Al Williams sings and fronts the band, Pat Bracy does her own brand of vocals and plays keyboard and piano, bass player Kenny Mariano also handles the sound, Joey T plays drums, and bandleader Vic Tommarchi is on lead guitar.

Andy grew up in Miami, Florida where he was first exposed to classical, pop and international music. He had his first “gig” at age five with a Calypso Latin band that performed at his mother’s restaurant in Miami every weekend. After studying at a performing arts college for two years, he began a full-time career as a performing artist, focusing on the unique sound of the Harp Guitar. Since then, Andy’s musical career has spanned over 45 years, more than 3,000 concerts and performances nationwide, 8 albums and hundreds of television and radio appearances.

ACTIVE AGING WEEK OCTOBER 2 - 8, 2023 Active Aging Week, which was first launched by the International Council on Active Aging® in 2003, is an annual week-long campaign aimed at celebrating and highlighting the positive aspects of aging. The event showcases the abilities of older adults and their valuable contributions to society while also emphasizing the role models who lead the way. The goal of Active Aging Week is to challenge society's negative perceptions of aging by demonstrating that older adults can thrive in all aspects of life, including physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational, and environmental domains, regardless of age or health status. The campaign seeks to provide older adults with opportunities to engage in wellness activities and exercise in a safe, supportive environment, promoting the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles throughout the lifespan.

At All Seasons Naples, celebrate Active Aging Week each day with healthy refreshments throughout the week. Did you know? A healthy diet includes all the food groups: fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, grain and dairy. GREAT DECISIONS COURSE WITH THE FOREIGN POLICY ASSOCIATION Increase your awareness of global issues during this multi-week discussion series. The Foreign Policy Association’s (FPA) Great Decisions program gives participants the opportunity to expand their understanding of world affairs. Topics change annually, are based on the Foreign Policy Association’s nonpartisan briefing book, and highlight the current most thoughtprovoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans.

2024 TOPICS INCLUDE: Climate technology and competition Will the United States and China, with other powerful countries following suit, approach current and future climate initiatives with an increased commitment to trade protectionism and nationalism, by various measures including trade restrictions? Or could a growing spirit of international accord develop to confront the “common enemy” of climate change?

Understanding Indonesia Despite its large size, Indonesia remains virtually invisible to most Americans. But as one of the world’s largest democracies, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, and as an economic driver of ASEAN, why does it fly below the radar? What are current issues in U.S.-Indonesian relations, and what role can the country play in Asia?

Science across borders Scientific advances benefit from collaboration between researchers, but what happens when material, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is controversial and important to a nation’s national security? Is there a middle ground between sharing information and denying access? How can we regulate cooperation?

High Seas Treaty Areas of the seas beyond national jurisdiction comprise the high seas, which are facing a degradation of ecosystems due to climate change and the increase in human activities, such as shipping, overfishing, pollution, and deep-sea mining. The recently negotiated High Seas Treaty, also known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, will attempt to address these issues. How difficult will it be to convince nations to participate?

U.S. - China trade rivalry China’s economic rise and its current policies of increasing the role of the state in the economy have led some U.S. policymakers to seek to deny China access to U.S. technology and investment. This is seen as a necessary corrective to decades of predatory Chinese economic policies. Is this a wise strategy, and how effective can it be?

NATO’s future Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO has come under increased scrutiny because of its role in relations between Russia and its neighbors. Will expanding membership in NATO protect countries, or will it further provoke Russia?

“First Car Blues” by Jackie Urquhart It was the winter of ‘59 I had the first car I could call mine It was a square blue Ford And the best I could afford This winter was fierce with ice Driving was like rolling dice One morning when leaving home I wanted to navigate not roam But the more I turned the front this way The more the car went that way Soon I found myself perpendicular Situated crosswire in the driveway peculiar Nothing I could do, every effort made it worse So time came to search in my purse Finding the AAA card I made the dreaded call My first emergency and I resisted the urge to ball The driver had never seen such a predicament Quickly with chains he moved to correct the alignment Shaking his head and leaving with a smile He said he hoped not to see this again for a while It was April before the Jackhammers arrived The only time ice lasted this long - glad I survived.

A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: Green Prescriptions Doctors globally prescribe “green prescriptions” for patients, encouraging more time in nature. Instead of traditional medication, doctors are now prescribing nature visits, even granting yearlong access to national parks, marine areas, and historical sites. The World Health Organization emphasizes nature’s significance for health and wellbeing and its role in recovering from COVID-19.

Studies have linked green spaces to improved health for the elderly, reducing hospital admissions for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Zip code greenness, park coverage, and blue space coverage all played a role. For those with limited outdoor access, consider these green prescription alternatives: •

Green prescriptions, initially known for improving • mental health, are now widely used for physical conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. Research suggests that • exposure to environmental microbes can enhance our immune systems and microbial • communities, benefiting overall health. Spending time in nature improves sleep, reduces stress, enhances happiness, and boosts attention, memory, and creativity. In 2020, the UK government invested £4 million ($5.2 million) in a green prescription pilot program as part of its post-COVID-19 recovery plan. In Japan, clinicians have recommended “shinrin yoku” (forest bathing) since 1982, utilizing the country’s extensive woodland walks. In the United States, the Park Rx America platform enables doctors to prescribe nature visits across thousands of parks. You don’t need remote wilderness for nature’s benefits. Just 15 minutes in a city park can boost energy and vitality. Experts recommend a minimum of five hours a month in nature for health benefits.

22

Spend time daily on a balcony, observing greenery, birds, or nature changes. Open a window shade daily and enjoy outdoor views. Draw or sketch outdoor scenes, birds, or animals and display them. Print favorite nature photos and hang them up.

Use a desktop digital frame for rotating nature photos.

Start a small indoor garden or grow plants from scraps.

Assist with tending an outdoor herb garden or nature feature if possible.

Engage with a tree: feel its bark, observe its sway, and savor its scent. Practicing intentional time around trees, known as “shinrin-yoku” or forest bathing, can promote health and happiness.

In summary, green prescriptions offer a natural remedy for various health conditions, emphasizing the vital role of nature in human well-being and recovery.

TESTIMONIALS

FROM OUR RESIDENTS & FAMILIES

Jacquie for ASAA: “For over a year my husband Brian and I have been living at All Seasons… From our window we see the beautiful Parker Mills County Park where we take daily walks in the forest along the Huron River. The tasteful décor of the residence itself provides a restful environment. The staff (too numerous to list individually) could not be more friendly and helpful. We enjoy the delicious home-cooked meals provided by John, the Chef, meals that we often share with non-resident friends. Current residents are welcoming and open to making new friends, ‘we’re all the new kids on the block.’ Most of all we appreciate the feeling nurtured by Robert, the Executive Director, that All Seasons is our home and our community.” Ronald for ASBH: “I love All Seasons, the best decision I ever made. Heather Solomon, our Life Enrichment Director, makes it all possible for us every day.” Timothy for ASRH: “My husband and I recently toured All Seasons Rochester for my parents. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful from the minute we walked in the door. The facility is so clean and decorated beautifully.” Ellen and Richard for ASOV: “The Mother’s Day luncheon was a big success in Memory Care. Congratulations to your staff for a job well done.” Sheri for ASNA: “My dad has been at All Seasons in the memory care unit for 3 months now and Julie Carver, who runs the unit, has been amazing. My siblings and I all live out of town and she has helped to make this transition has seamless as possible. She always gets back to us ASAP and really has my dad’s best interest at heart. Julie is kind, thoughtful and very professional.” Allan for ASWB: “Bree the Sales Counselor is a fantastic person. She has helped me every step of the way to move into All Seasons. I could not have asked for a more brilliant and fabulous person to work with. She has done everything to ensure I will be all set when it becomes time to move into the community. I am looking forward to many great years being at All Seasons!” 27
