GET TO KNOW THE MANAGEMENT TEAM

JOE DEL SERRONE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF BRAND MANAGEMENT Since the beginning of my career with All Seasons eight years ago, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you. It was a privilege to become Senior Director of Brand Management, where I work closely with the Beztak partners and the management teams at each of the All Seasons communities to ensure a consistent and compelling brand experience.

I was born in Michigan and grew up in Italy, where I began my career in the hospitality industry over 20 years ago. My professional experience has included luxury hotel and residential apartment management as well as time onboard a cruise ship, experiencing the priceless value of service excellence and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

When not at work, I enjoy cooking, listening to Italian music, boating and spending quality time with family and friends. I look forward to many memorable experiences to come and I am proud to be an ambassador of the All Seasons brand.

JEREMY FLANERY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR While somewhat of a newcomer to the senior living world, Jeremy is no stranger to the hospitality industry. Jeremy brings 20+ years of hospitality experience to his role at All Seasons Birmingham. He has spent most of his career working in luxury properties in Florida, California, and Michigan, most recently managing the David Whitney Building in downtown Detroit. To Jeremy, ‘hospitality’ is not an industry but, rather, a way of life, an opportunity to brighten residents’ day with a kind word or gesture, enriching lives – offering family reassurance their loved ones are in the best of hands. His guiding principle is to remind staff, daily, to treat all residents with respect, compassion, and dignity – everyone is to be cared for with the utmost respect, as we would our own family. Originally from Fort Wayne, Jeremy spent most of his youth in Indiana followed by a long stay in Florida, before returning to his Midwestern roots here in Michigan several years ago. Outside of work, Jeremy most values time with his wife and son, and particularly likes spending time outdoors.

GET TO KNOW YOUR LIFE ENRICHMENT TEAM ZACH GUIDA, DIRECTOR OF LIFE ENRICHMENT Zach’s passion is to inspire our residents to pursue self-care and further lifelong learning. As a Life Enrichment professional, he leads programs that effectively support social connection, self-expression, vitality, and purpose. Zach received his Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Minor in Instrumental Music at Oakland university. Zach got his start in the Senior Living industry in 2013 as a server in the All Seasons Rochester Hills dining room. From there, he was promoted to Concierge, which allowed him to connect with residents and better understand their hobbies and interests. That understanding informs the work he does on a daily basis after being promoted in 2017 as Life Enrichment Director.

Zach joined the All Seasons Birmingham team in August 2021. Zach hails from Lapeer, MI and enjoys reading, kayaking, hiking, and bowling.

DOUG BROWN, LEAD DRIVER Doug was born in Pontiac and raised in Detroit Michigan. He has been driving larger vehicles for over 20 years and enjoys being out on the road.

His passion is to assist seniors with their day to day lives. Outside of work he enjoys playing basketball and spending time with his daughter.

CHLOE WALLACE, LIFE ENRICHMENT COORDINATOR Chloe was born and raised in Metro Detroit, but calls Berkley her home.

She attended Northern Michigan University and graduated with an Applied Science degree. While working at All Seasons she has discovered her love for working alongside seniors. When she is not working, she loves to travel, explore new places, and spend time with her cat, Harley.

SHARON GREGORY, DRIVER Sharon is the 6th child of 7 siblings, born and raised in Detroit. She has worked since 13, always in relation to service and people. She’s had the honor of meeting the residents and absolutely loves enriching the lives of others as she's had the pleasure of doing throughout her life. "It's a joy and a pleasure, and I'm glad to be part of the Life Enrichment team here at All Season's Birmingham.”

Lisa Montes is Michigan’s most prominent flamenco teacher and performer. Lisa Montes began studying and performing Spanish dancing at the age of seven with her grandmother, Dame Maria del Carmen. She is highly trained in the classical, regional and Flamenco dances of Spain. Some highlights of her career include dancing with the Michigan Opera Theater and with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She will be accompanied by Sean Blackman, the award-winning world music guitarist, composer and producer. They will deliver an array of Spanish Flamenco songs and while also sharing the history of the dance and chosen repertoire.

Don't miss out on celebrating International Blues Music Day! The Smoke Jones Detroit Band is a premier Blues, Jazz, Soul, and R&B band. Consummate performer Alfred “Smoke” Jones has had the honor of singing with world-renowned music greats. He’s been nominated for multiple Detroit Music Awards, including with Bobby Murray for the song "Sooner Come Later" for Outstanding Blues Recording. The band has played with jazz greats David Kocbus, Mike Stach, and more, and recently played at the televised Detroit Ford Fireworks Special. Don’t miss Smoke Jones and his hot blues band!

DAVE SHARP WORLDS QUARTET

GUITAR, BASS, SYNTHESIZER & PERCUSSION SEPTEMBER 19 @ 7:30 PM Recognized in the Jazz Times Critic’s Poll, the Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet masterfully blends rhythms, sounds, and textures from across the globe.

Featuring oud, guitar, electric bass, synthesizer and world percussion, the Worlds Quartet is fueled by the spirit of jazz, world music and dynamic exploratory improvisation. Bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Sharp leads the Worlds Quartet to explore music traditions from Turkey, Egypt, Ukraine, India, Bulgaria and Greece. The quartet has appeared at Detroit Jazz Festival, Concert of Colors Detroit, Ann Arbor Summer Festival, Bach Music Festival, and more!

When Arseniy Gusev was 5 years old, an upright piano was brought into his St. Petersburg home, and he immediately started playing and experimenting with it. He went on to study both composition and piano performance at the St. Petersburg Conservatory.

In 2018, he moved to the United States, where he attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, and will be attending Yale School of Music this Fall 2022.

He has performed in throughout the world, and his compositions have been heard in Mariinsky Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Konzerthaus Dortmund, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and other major venues.

Arseniy is a laureate of many competitions, such as the Dorothy McKenzie Artist Award, Cleveland Piano Virtu(al)oso Competition, Singapore International Piano Competition, Three Arts Piano Competition, Cleveland Composers Guild Contest, “Another Space” Composition Competition, International Gavrilin Competition, International Competition “PerformerComposer,” and others. Arseniy has an exclusive publishing contract with Kompozitor, one of the biggest publishers in Eastern Europe. Arseniy has just competed in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas, one of the most prestigious and career-launching events in the classical world. We are proud and honored to welcome him as the first All Seasons Artist in Residence.

About the residency and commission: Arseniy will be hosted at All Seasons Ann Arbor for six weeks before he starts his first year at Yale. During his stay, he will perform both formal and casual programs for residents at the four Michigan All Seasons communities, dine with us, socialize with us, and compose an original song inspired by residents’ stories and his experience learning from and living with residents.

JON MILAN Jon Milan is a Michiganbased musician and historian, specializing in popular idioms of 19th and 20th century American music. He has performed and lectured throughout southeastern Michigan for more than 45 years with a command of styles and idioms including ragtime, traditional jazz, stride, folk, folk-rock, theater music and the great American popular songbook. Over the years he has written extensively for theater and industrial film and has been featured (along with his band, The Brakemen) on the cover of the Detroit Metro Times. He is the author of “Detroit: Ragtime and the Jazz Age,” (Arcadia, 2009); and has co-authored a variety of books on Michigan history, travel and food with Gail Offen, including “Iconic Restaurants of Ann Arbor,” “Grand River Avenue: From Detroit to Lake Michigan,” and “Michigan Haunts; Public Places, Eerie Spaces.”

SHEILA LANDIS JAZZ Sheila Landis was raised in Rochester Hills, and graduated in 1971 from Adams High School, excelling in choral music and creative writing.

Captivated by the music of Billie Holiday in the 1972 film "Lady Sings the Blues", Landis 6

abruptly changed her career focus from that of an English major at Oakland University to jazz chanteuse. She has been performing her unique amalgam of jazz, Brazilian music and blues since 1973. Sheila's long-time collaborator is guitarist/producer Rick Matle.

Matle earned his Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Oakland University in 1986.

Matle's formative studies there included jazz and classical guitar, jazz composing as well as performances on guitar, bass, percussion and African drums. Rick plays solid bass and chordal accompaniment on the 7-string guitar.

EAT IT UP JAZZ TRIO Detroit-based and undeniably swinging, the Eat It Up Trio is Michigan’s premier professional purveyor of possibly the most pleasurable music three humans can safely perform within the parameters of the law. Comprised of drummer Sean Perlmutter, bassist Trevor Lamb, and pianist/vocalist Mike Harrison, the Eat It Up trio delivers original songs and arrangements with a versatile repertoire spanning from traditional jazz to hard bop, and all the cracks and crevices in between. Dedicated to putting on an entertaining and accessible show, the Eat It Up Trio is guaranteed to deliver a good time!

ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS INDEPENDENCE TIE DYE

Summer is the perfect time for red, white, and blue tie dye projects! Learning how to tie dye can be a little messy, but really fun and the end result is never wrong. The process involves tying up different parts of fabric so the dye penetrates unevenly, giving a multitude of effects. You can combine tiedye with fabric paint and other mediums to create one-of-akind pieces for your wardrobe. Bring your white cotton shirts, bandanas, pants, or headbands!

Create your own headware for the Great Gatsby Dinner, using feathers, ribbons, beads, and more! Don’t forget to catch the virtual lecture from the Hillwood Estate Museum for inspiration and deeper understanding of fashion and its historical context in the 1920s.

BUTTON BOWL CREATIONS

Use old buttons and put them to good use, creating a unique and surprisingly sophisticated center piece. It all starts by blowing up a balloon to your desired bowl size and covering it with a brush of paint. Let the fun start!

BIRMINGHAM BLOOMFIELD ART CENTER

Explore jewelry making, metal smithing, mixed media, clay, photography workshops, and more at our local art center and gallery! Whether you’re just starting out or experienced, there’s an art class for you at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. Seniors @ the Center are monthly workshops designed as convenient, inexpensive opportunities to be creative and learn something new.

Different, authentic art projects are presented each month with all materials provided. All materials are provided, and you can expect to complete a project in about 45 minutes.

STEPHANIE BURLE has been a certified personal trainer since 2005. She enjoys training and encouraging clients to meet their individual fitness needs, while learning to make important lifestyle changes. She is also a nutritional consultant and helps clients develop ways to make healthy and sustainable food choices. She began her college career studying Elementary Education and soon switched to personal training. Stephanie is certified as a personal trainer through the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI). She has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Oakland University with a minor in Exercise Science. Stephanie is certified in CPR/ AED and First Aid through the American Red Cross. Additionally, she is a certified Tai Chi for Energy instructor through the Tai Chi For Health Institute.

VIRTUAL LECTURES: “MAKE OF THE CONSTITUTION” WITH HARVARD LAW SCHOOL PROFESSOR MICHAEL KIARMAN Harvard Law School Professor Michael Klarman, an expert on constitutional law and constitutional history, delivered a talk titled “The Framers and the Making of the Constitution,” which outlined the ways the framers managed to convince Americans, through a reasonably democratic process, to approve a Constitution that vastly expanded the powers of the federal government and insulated it from populist political pressures.

“ROARING 20’S: AMERICAN STYLE AND FASHION” WITH THE HILLWOOD ESTATE MUSEUM AND GARDENS Award winning decorative arts historian Stephen Harrison pulls back the curtain on the innovative developments in the Jazz Age design, art, architecture, and music, placing new emphasis on the US as the emerging marketplace for all that was extravagant and luxurious. This virtual lecture is brought you by the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens located in Washington D.C. “NATIVE AMERICAN ART AND ARCHEOLOGY” WITH UTAH VALLEY ART HISTORY PROFESSOR TRAVIS LEE CLARK In this lecture, we discuss the art and archaeology of North America, specifically the Mound Builders, the Hopewell and Mississippi Cultures, and finally the Ancestral Pueblo. ANDREA JACQUES “IKIGAI” PERSONALIZED WORKSHOPS Kyosei Consulting is a training, coaching and creative firm with more than two decades of experience working with everyone from startup entrepreneurs to Fortune 500’s. Kyosei (kyō – say) is a Japanese word that means “living and working together for the common good.”

Kyosei is more than just a name – Founder Andrea Jacques and her team are on a mission to transform the ways people live, work and do business in order to build foundations for a world where everyone wins. “Ikigai” is translated as life + value or “that which makes life worth living.” In English, this term is often translated as having a sense of purpose. Jacques and the Kyosei team will walk us through a series of personalized workshops in which residents will (re)discover what gives them a sense of purpose at any age.

IN PERSON LECTURES: DIA LECTURE WITH CARLENE VANVOORHIES - “IN THE GARDEN” This lecture, brought to you by the Detroit Institute of Arts, explores the hidden meanings behind images of flowers, plants, and gardens which are some of the DIA’s most beloved works of art! Carlene VanVoorhies is part of a dedicated group of well-trained IPV volunteers. Each received a year-long training by curators of the various collections at the museum.

KEVIN WOOD PORTRAYS PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN Kevin Wood has made appearances at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Lincoln Heritage Museum, and more. As President, Mr. Lincoln ably led our nation through its darkest days. In addition to providing a firsthand account of his own life and times, “Mr. Lincoln” will speak on rising from obscurity to the highest office in the land, valuing education, liberty, freedom, democracy, equality, and opportunity.

ARNOLD COLLENS: “DETROIT DESIGNERS AND THEIR CARS” Just in time for the Woodward Dream Cruise, Arnold will take us back to 1950. Examining the various Metro Detroit Automotive companies, Arnold will show us how they set their own brands apart from each other and how they shaped the auto industry around the world.

WEEKLY TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS Led by the Life Enrichment Team, these hands-on workshops are geared to meet residents’ ever-changing technology needs, ranging from smartphones, to tablets, laptops, computers, printers and TV’s.

MEMOIR WRITING WITH ROBBIE Robbie Terman is an archivist and published author who is on a mission to ensure the past is not forgotten. She brings history to the public through exhibits, presentations, social media, and has contributed to numerous publications. She also regularly teaches courses in writing, genealogy, and preserving your personal archives. Robbie believes that every day is a chance to make history and strives to help others contribute their own stories for the enrichment of future generations.

ZACH GUIDA PRESENTS MICHIGAN GOVERNORS HISTORY SERIES Dive into the depths of Michigan history as we examine the legacies of Michigan Governors throughout the state’s history, from the battle for statehood to today. Join Zach Guida, your Director of Life Enrichment, as he facilitates this compelling lifelong learning series.

Quizzo Trivia in the Bistro - Quizzo is a competitive trivia game that challenges you to think and stay on your toes. Did you know? We get a dopamine hit every time we experience the feeling of mastery – the feeling of knowing that we know something. And everyone has one area, one body of knowledge, about which they are – or think they are – an absolute expert! Join us in the Bistro for a professional, themed, curated trivia led by Quizzo!

COMMUNITY SERVICE ART PROGRAMS BAGS AND BEDDINGS WORKSHOP All Seasons will collaborate with the Southfield-based National Council of Jewish Women’s Green Committee, focused on environmental issues. Their latest project aims to reduce the amount of plastic waste going into landfills and water, while also making the lives of the homeless a bit easier. The effort involves taking plastic bags, cutting them into strips of plastic yarn — or “plarn” — and then knitting or crocheting into surprisingly comfortable bedding for displaced individuals at the Corner Shower and Laundry, a nonprofit in Corktown that provides free shower and laundry access for those in need. All Seasons will be collecting plastic bags and hosting the Council to learn this unique knitting technique.

Residents and management will then drop off all bags and bedding to the Council’s Green Committee.

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT FRIENDS OF THE CHILDREN - DETROIT FUNDRAISER

Friends of the Children - Detroit is the local chapter of a nation-wide organization that pairs paid mentors with at-risk youth for years of support, helping them build trust and inner strength. About 78% of Detroit youth live in high-poverty neighborhoods.

Friends of the Children - Detroit is working to end generational poverty through their mentoring program. Their model is evidence-informed and researchbased with proven long-term outcomes.

"Research shows that a child who has a consistent caring adult in their lives has

a better outcome for life, and so we start with children from 4 to 6 years old, and we mentor them until they graduate from high school.” – E.D. Nicole McKinney.

Pitch in with the other All Seasons communities, raise funds and collect school supplies for K - 2nd graders throughout the beginning of August! Then join residents from across the All Seasons communities to deliver the supplies in person at the org’s summer party downtown on August 13!

Perfect Pair Intergenerational connections are important for our health, wellness, and awareness and appreciation of the changing world. Stop by to learn more about Perfect Pair, a free program run through the University of Michigan that creates oneon-one connections between seniors and college students. Student volunteers and senior participants are paired based on similar hobbies and interests. Through shared laughs, conversation, and fun activities, members will have the opportunity to foster meaningful and long-lasting relationships with their Perfect Pair.

Poetry & Short Story Readings are a new monthly activity where residents can share their poetry or short stories that they have written or one that has moved them during a particular moment. We have many talented residents; this activity will allow us all to express ourselves in prose and share experiences. Don't miss out on participating in or being in the audience for Poetry Slams on July 21st, August 18th, and September 15th!

Book Club occurs the Third Thursday of each month. Jen Hassell is an Adult Services Librarian at Baldwin Public Library. She has worked in libraries for the past 16 years and has an MLIS from Wayne State University. Organizing book clubs for libraries, friends and schools is something that she has done for over 10 years.

Leading book discussions is one of the most fulfilling aspects of her job as they connect reading with community and expand our empathy.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTS FLORA ACOSTA Flora Acosta was born and raised in the Philippines, and on May 30th, 1972, she came to the United States. This year marks 50 golden years in the United States. She is retired from Detroit Medical Center/ Detroit Receiving Hospital in Downtown Detroit. She has been at All Seasons Birmingham four years now and loves the community. In her free time she loves gardening, cooking, water aerobics, Zumba, walking/ exploring downtown Birmingham, playing the piano, listening to music, and crocheting. Flora is a resident ambassador at All Seasons, she loves helping residents that have lived here for a while, as well as the new residents, welcoming them into the community with open arms.

ANGIE ATHENS Angie Athens was born and raised in Elmira, New York. She met her husband at her cousin's wedding and soon after they were happily married. He finished medical school and got an internship at a hospital in Detroit and soon opened his own practice. Angie remained at home to raise four wonderful children, three of whom would become doctors and join their father’s practice while her fourth child went to law school to become a lawyer. She enjoyed boating and traveling around the world! She can't think of her “favorite place,” as each destination offered its own memorable uniqueness.

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which

can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important.

Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.

I was feeling lonely in early spring When a pair of mourning doves Just made themselves right at home In my window boxes.

First, they’d plop into one box Keeping each other warm.

Then, they’d separate and Occupy a box apiece.

They didn’t stay long, And after they’d flown away I searched for eggs, But no sign of any, yet.

Serve me right For not pulling out the old plants,

One day, when I got up and went inside,

Dumping the earth entirely

I came back only to find

Before winter came.

Twigs and feathers piled on my chair.

Could they really have tried to nest there?

Oh, I tried clapping my hands To shoo them away, But back they flew every day

Well, a robin came next, and sang its heart out,

Until I potted blue pansies.

No doubt a warning call

Mornings, they’d fly in tandem

From the balcony rail -

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS A WORD ABOUT THE ART We are happy to share with our residents, visitors, and friends the art exhibited throughout our community.

Each piece was individually conceived and created specifically for where it is presented for collective viewing enjoyment.

To put it another way, the photographs are specifically curated considering the interior design and dimensions of each room.

Each of the six All Seasons - in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Naples, Oro Valley, Rochester Hills, and West Bloomfield - showcase photography highlighting the local natural landscape and urban features, creating a porous border between interior and exterior beauty.

We are committed and proud to display art within our communities that has been commissioned specifically for the purpose of enhancing the beauty of the communities as well as inspiring a sense of energy and joy. It is consistent with our mission to create within our communities an atmosphere which we are proud to proclaim is engaging, enlivening, innovative, and “totally captivating.” For that purpose, a great deal of time, effort and resources are dedicated 24

to each community for the creation of a portfolio that is totally unique, privately commissioned, and signed by the creator.

These art collections are highly valued and significantly insured. We hope that these unique pieces - in some cases on canvases up to 10 feet long - express the exuberance of their subjects and engender the energy and “felt” experience of being alive - indeed, of life itself.

Renée Fleming is a leading advocate for the study of the powerful connections between the arts and health. As Artistic Advisor at Large to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Renée has spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the participation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

The Sound Health initiative explores and brings attention to research and practice at the intersection of music, health, and neuroscience.

Renée Fleming is passionate about the central importance of music and the arts in our society. Most of us have, at times, felt moved or comforted by music, but scientists are now discovering that music can teach us a lot about the brain itself. Music engages many neural regions at once, and evidence suggests that it can shape and even alter our brains.

In addition to using music to better understand the complex functioning of the brain, researchers have found creative arts therapy to be effective tools in addressing the effects of an ever-widening array of conditions. Especially compelling is the fact that music, dance, and art therapies are cost-effective, non-pharmaceutical, and noninvasive. Many can be administered in group settings, offering benefits for emotional wellbeing, and through tele-health, increasing accessibility. And the impact of arts on the developing brains of children is another burgeoning field of study, with effects reaching beyond test results and scholastic aptitude to creativity and success throughout life.
