It finally feels as though Spring has sprung here at All Seasons Birmingham, although most of us know that Spring in Michigan can be a bit fickle! This winter felt longer than most due to the rise in Covid cases and the long bouts of freezing temperatures, but we’ve made it through – all the better for it. I want to express my gratitude to each of you for keeping a positive outlook and forging ahead. Things are finally beginning to feel like normal again!

As we look ahead, I thought I’d highlight a few of the things that I’m excited about – and hopefully, you are too. April kicks off with our theme of the month as “Springtime in Paris,” which includes a lovely French dinner prepared by our Executive Chef, Matthew Ford. Our next culinary journey will delight your taste buds as Chef and his team cook up some Crêpes Suzette! In May, we head south of the border to learn more about Mexico’s culinary traditions, followed by Thailand in June. These chef demos and themed dinners are two of my favorite aspects of All Seasons, and I encourage you to join and watch our culinary team in action!

Finally, Zach has been working diligently to provide some new and exciting programming. Some of these additions include a new company to facilitate our Tuesday Trivia, Ikigai philosophy for emotional enrichment, and philanthropic opportunities! We look forward to seeing each of you participate in our ever-expanding enrichment opportunities!

Japanese-born pianists, Yuki and Tomoko Mack have dazzled audiences on three continents.

After winning strong recognition as soloists, these Steinway Artists partnered to form the award-winning piano duo, ‘The Mack Sisters.'

From Bach to Piazzolla, their diverse repertoire includes a broad range of four-hands piano music and orchestral works. Beyond the main stage, they’ve performed live on the radio and recorded a highly-acclaimed collection of fourhands piano music - all of which exhibit their unique sense of interpretation and flawless technique. “…Exciting choice of repertoire played with flawless technique and fire…” – Music and Dance Press/Tokyo, Japan

Arseniy Gusev (b.1998, Saint Petersburg) is a student at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studio of Sergei Babayan (piano) and Keith Fitch (composition). He actively performs abroad and has given solo concerts in Russia, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Slovakia, USA, and Germany.

Maude Cloutier, a French-Canadian violinist, is quickly building up a reputation as a young musician of great promise and already concertizes full-time as a soloist and chamber musician across Northeast Ohio and beyond.

She began studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music at the age of 16, graduated from the Young Artist Program in 2021, and is currently wrapping up her first year as a full scholarship student in the coveted Artist Certificate program studying with Jan Sloman and Jaime Laredo.

TERRA VOCE ENSEMBLE

VIOLIN, CLARINET, CELLO, AND PIANO JUNE 3 @ 2 PM Organized as a chamber music group in 2017, Terra Voce members draw upon their individual experiences with chamber music, choral, and orchestral organizations throughout Metropolitan Detroit.

Lillian Dean, clarinet: Lillian Dean is principal clarinet with the Royal Oak Symphony and also plays with the Warren Concert Band, and holds Masters degrees in Urban and Regional Planning.

Doris Hall, piano: Doris Hall is the organist at the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Theory from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Organ and Church Music from Wayne State University.

Kelly Roenicke, violin: Kelly Roenicke performs and teaches in the metropolitan Detroit area, and holds degrees in Violin Performance from Western Michigan University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Karen Wingert, cello: Karen Wingert graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in cello performance. Karen is a private music instructor in the Farmington Hills area and freelances with various chamber music ensembles.

GET TO KNOW YOUR LIFE ENRICHMENT TEAM! ZACH GUIDA DIRECTOR OF LIFE ENRICHMENT Zach’s passion is to inspire our residents to pursue self-care and further lifelong learning.

As a Life Enrichment professional, he leads programs that effectively support social connection, self-expression, vitality, and purpose. Zach received his Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Minor in Instrumental Music at Oakland university. Zach got his start in the Senior Living industry in 2013 as a server in the All Seasons Rochester Hills dining room. From there, he was promoted to Concierge, which allowed him to connect with residents and better understand their hobbies and interests. That understanding informs the work he does on a daily basis after being promoted in 2017 as Life Enrichment Director. Zach joined the All Seasons Birmingham team in August 2021. Zach hails from Lapeer, MI and enjoys reading, kayaking, hiking, and bowling.

MATTHEW BALL APRIL 22 A national touring act, pianist/vocalist Matthew Ball performs New Orleans and Swing Era favorites. A graduate of Oakland University and lifetime Metro-Detroiter, Matthew trained classically with Flavio Varani, a graduate of The Paris Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music, who traces his own pedigree of study back to Chopin himself. Matthew has established himself as one of the leading entertainers in Michigan. In 2017, he performed his program with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has been featured on Michigan Public Radio’s Ann Delisi's and Rob Reinhart's Essential Music Programs, The Craig Fahle Show and WMUK’s The Art & More Show.

HENRIK KARAPETYAN JUNE 13 Born in Armenia, Henrik started playing the violin at the age of six, enrolling in music classes at

Spendiarian Special Music School. In 2000, as a member of the “Serenade” Chamber Orchestra Henrik traveled to perform across Europe. In 2002, Henrik came to the United States to pursue his graduate degree at Wayne State University’s Music Department.

While at Wayne, he led the orchestra as its concertmaster and was featured as a soloist on many occasions. In 2007, Mr Karapetyan received a full scholarship and teaching appointment to attend doctoral studies at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance.

YUTA SUGANO JUNE 24 Hailed as “poetic and colorful,” pianist Yuta Sugano is rapidly gaining international recognition and he has appeared as a soloist in Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Spain, and the U.S. Yuta began his piano studies at the age of five, and by age twelve he made his concerto debut performing with the Kansai Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in Japan. He has since been a recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships including Meiko Miyazawa Award, Yamaha President’s 6

Award (Japan), Nodar Gabunia Award, Glenn E. LeClair Graduate Piano Award (USA), and Zodiac Music Academy’s Chamber Musician Award (France). Yuta is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, B.M., University of Michigan, M.M., and the University of Kansas, DMA. He is a native of Kyoto, Japan. Yuta currently teaches at Steinway Arts Academy, and is an Artist in Residence at Steinway Piano Gallery of Detroit.

MIDNIGHT MUSIC A new Life Enrichment program, “Midnight Music” is an ongoing partnership with All Seasons and Oakland University’s School of Music, Theatre and

Dance. For an hour following dinner, when no other activities are booked, advanced piano students will stop by to build their performance experience, practice for competitions, and fill our halls with music.

Whether you can stay for an hour or just want to pop in for 10 minutes, we encourage you to say hello. Our first Midnight Music performer is: Ellen Wallenfang, a singer/songwriter based in Detroit, who creates music that draws on pop, indie, soul, and jazz. Currently in pursuit of a music degree at Oakland University, she performs regularly with school ensembles, fellow collaborators, and as a solo artist. Her goal is to bring connection and hope through the power of music.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT - MEET THOMAS SHELLBERG Thomas Shellberg was born and raised in Jackson, MI. Thomas graduated from the University of Michigan with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Biology. He then moved to Troy, MI where he taught Biology and Zoology at Henry Ford University in Dearborn. He would go on to create a brand-new class “Evolutionary Psychology”. While teaching, he wrote many articles and published a book titled “Choosy Women and Cheating Men: Evolution and Human Behavior”. After retiring from teaching, Thomas dedicates his time to gardening, seeing friends, and playing Bridge. Thomas believes the most beautiful sound in the world is Celtic thunder and the sound of his children’s voices.

ART CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS FRIDAY STUDIO WITH MARGARET WEILBUT

Join us for open studio time to create art according to your personal skill and style. Margaret will guide participants in creativity sessions. Beginner, intermediate and advanced artists are invited to participate. Artist and therapist Margaret Wielbut received her Master’s degree in Art Therapy from Wayne State and a postgraduate certification in Gerontology from Eastern Michigan University. After receiving her American Art Therapy Association Certification in 2008, she began mentoring students at Wayne State, teaching Aspects of Art Therapy, supervising graduate student practicums, and providing Supervision for the American Art Therapy Board.

ART FOR EVERYONE WITH DOROTHY BABBAGE

Pop in to get your creative juices flowing and experience Art for Everyone. As a former grade school teacher, Dorothy Babbage loves working with people and is amazed by their creativity and versatility. The best part of an art class is the laughing, talking, and sharing of life experiences, in addition to skills building.

Every project presents an opportunity to reminisce about the past or to share a memory while discovering a new technique.

This quarter, residents will create seasonal projects, such as spring decorations for your entryway, nature-inspired paintings, and modern paint-marker designs. Dorothy says, “Working at ASBH has been a wonderful addition to my life. I would love to have you join us. You don’t have to be an expert, just be willing to try something new.

EARTH DAY POUR PAINTING

Pay homage to our big, blue planet with a unique art offering.

Acrylic Paint Pouring is a fluid technique used to create art by pouring paint onto a canvas, using many methods to apply it to a surface. The Acrylic Pouring technique allows artists to apply color in puddles, pools, and marble-like patterns. It is particularly popular with novices, as it allows residents to create quick paintings with dramatic, contemporary results.

CHROMA

Chroma is a two-part lecture and concert series exploring the deep and often surprising connections between music and art. Through visual as well as auditory aids, lecturer Dave Vessella will illuminate the parallels between music theory and color theory in a way that is both accessible and interactive. In between the presentation and the concert, residents are encouraged to make their own abstract art and his band will improvise music inspired by the art they will be seeing for the first time. It will be a unique and inspiring experience you won’t want to miss.

About Dave: Trumpet player, vocalist, educator, composer, and arranger, Dave Vessella's unique sound is reminiscent of traditional New Orleans music and west coast jazz a la Chet Baker. Vessella has played at the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Panama Jazz Festival, Michigan Jazz Festival, in The Detroit Pistons house band, and more across Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Vessella holds a M.M. from Wayne State University and a B.A. in Jazz Studies from Columbia College Chicago. He believes in a deep connection between all of the art forms, be it music, painting, dance, or even martial arts; every art form is related to the others and Dave seeks to connect them all in a meaningful way.

COMMUNITY SERVICE ART PROGRAMS BAGS AND BEDDINGS WORKSHOP All Seasons will collaborate with the Southfield-based National Council of Jewish Women’s Green Committee, focused on environmental issues. Their latest project aims to reduce the amount of plastic waste going into landfills and water, while also making the lives of the homeless a bit easier.

The effort involves taking plastic bags, cutting them into strips of plastic yarn — or “plarn” — and then knitting or crocheting into surprisingly comfortable bedding for displaced individuals at the Corner Shower and Laundry, a nonprofit in Corktown that provides free shower and laundry access for those in need. All Seasons will be collecting plastic bags and hosting the Council to learn this unique knitting technique.

Residents and management will then drop off all bags and bedding to the Council’s Green Committee.

INSTRUCTOR BIO: STEPHANIE BURLE has been a certified personal trainer since 2005. She enjoys training and encouraging clients to meet their individual fitness needs, while learning to make important lifestyle changes. She is also a nutritional consultant and helps clients develop ways to make healthy and sustainable food choices. She began her college career studying Elementary Education and soon switched to personal training. Stephanie is certified as a personal trainer through the National Personal Training Institute (NPTI). She has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Oakland University with a minor in Exercise Science. Stephanie is certified in CPR/ AED and First Aid through the American Red Cross. Additionally, she is a certified Tai Chi for Energy instructor through the Tai Chi For Health Institute.

Larry Walsh’s “Cycling across America to Self-Discovery" “Your job has been eliminated.” After serving 7 years in the Army and working for 28 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Larry Walsh stepped away from corporate life and cycled into the heart of America to fulfill his lifelong dream of riding across the country. He purchased a Surly Disc Trucker touring bike and began his 3,120mile ride from California to Florida. Cycling over treacherous mountains, through open plains, unforgiving deserts, and over 200 unique small towns, Walsh not only discovered a new world and new people, but he uncovered a side of himself that he thought was long forgotten—one filled with true grit and determination. Join Walsh on his trip across America and see what it feels like to experience life one pedal rotation at a time.

Vincent York’s Hands-On History of Jazz Enjoy this new session as Vincent York introduces the audience to the deeper meaning and history of Jazz. Vincent plays and demonstrates how the evolution of diverse music styles contributed to the birth of jazz. It’s a hands-on, multimedia experience with audience participation, singing, and music. Vincent York was born into a family of musicians and a life of music. Vincent toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra until he formed his own band in 1977. He has recorded or played with noteworthy jazz artists such as Marcus Belgrave, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and Martha Reeves. As bandleader, Vincent York draws on his wealth of understanding and local professional artists to unveil the story of jazz to audiences of all ages.

Virtual Lecture by the Art Institute of Chicago: Aztec Art and the Fragility of Empire Aztec art drew on the Mesoamerican past, citing works from the ancient cities of Teotihuacan and Tula to lend authority and legitimacy to the new empire. But this engagement with the past also provoked reflection on the inevitable end of empire and the cyclicality of time, themes that resonate as the five hundredth anniversary of the Spanish invasion of Mexico unfolds this year. In this illustrated lecture, Claudia Brittenham, University of Chicago, discusses how Aztec art reflects this engagement with this historical past.

Kevin Wood portrays President Abraham Lincoln Kevin Wood has made appearances at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Lincoln Heritage Museum, and more.

As President, Mr. Lincoln ably led our nation through its darkest days. In addition to providing a firsthand account of his own life and times, “Mr. Lincoln” will speak on rising from obscurity to the highest office in the land, valuing education, liberty, freedom, democracy, equality, and opportunity.

Detroit Public Theatre’s “Detroit ‘67” To kick off an all-new partnership, you’re invited to attend a three-part community program with Detroit Public Theatre’s Co-Producing Artistic Director, Sarah Winkler and Connectivity & Engagement Manager, Madelyn Porter. In May, Winkler and Porter will visit All Seasons to discuss the history and vision of the Detroit Public Theatre and give us an exclusive snapshot of the development process of their upcoming production of the acclaimed play “Detroit ’67” written by TONY Award nominated daughter of Detroit, Dominique Morisseau. On June 3rd, we will attend a special matinee performance with students, for an intergenerational audience experience. The week following the performance, Winkler and Porter will return to All Seasons for a facilitated discussion about the themes, highlights, and questions raised by this unique production.

Arnie Collens presents “Florida Flowers, Birds, & Butterflies” Arnold Collens is a lifetime Detroiter and graduate of Wayne State University’s School of Business and College of Education. In recent years, Arnie’s love of photography has taken him to the Center for Creative Studies and Oakland Community College. Over the last 17 years he’s walked the streets of Detroit looking at change, recorded images, and immersing himself in city history. Arnie engages groups by sharing his interest in community, history, nature, art and changes in architectural landscape. When in Florida, Arnie serves as a naturalist and day captain at Audubon’s flagship facility in Naples: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

Detroit to Chicago: A trip down Memory Lane along Michigan Avenue The Old Chicago Road Join Jon Milan and Gail Offen as they take a visual road trip from downtown Detroit, across Michigan, to Chicago's world-famous Magnificent Mile. Along the way we'll look at Detroit's delicious Coney Island hot dog wars, take a peek at Corktown to see where the Tigers once held court, and check in on the progress of the newly-reborn Michigan Central Railroad Station. We'll learn about the colorful cultural enclaves along the way, rich in history and tradition, as we pass through Irish, Arabic, African American and Native American neighborhoods and regions. It's a nearly 300-mile pathway through roadside America. Gail Offen is an adjunct professor of advertising at Lawrence Technological University, and an award-winning creative director, writer and branding specialist. She is a co-author of several books: ”Grand River Avenue: From Detroit to Lake Michigan,” “Iconic Restaurants of Ann Arbor,” and “Michigan Haunts: Public Places and Eerie Spaces.” Jon Milan is a Detroitbased freelance author, pianist, music historian, and corporate communications manager. He has written five books, three co-authored with Gail Offen, as well as “Detroit: Ragtime and the Jazz Age,” and “Old Chicago Road.”

Memoir Writing with Robbie Robbie Terman is an archivist and published author who is on a mission to ensure the past is not forgotten. She brings history to the public through exhibits, presentations, social media, and has contributed to numerous publications. She also regularly teaches courses in writing, genealogy, and preserving your personal archives. Robbie believes that every day is a chance to make history and strives to help others contribute their own stories for the enrichment of future generations.

Connections and Smiles with Tamara Zoner Join Speaker and Happiness Trainer, Tamara Zoner, to learn the actions and habits of happiness! Based on the NY Times Bestselling book, Happy for No Reason, and research in happiness and positive psychology, Tamara will share the tools that you can begin using to bring greater happiness into your life. A show-not-tell single mom to three awesome kids and a karaoke enthusiast, Tamara demonstrates how to create a life you love! She was the Director of Life Enrichment for four years at All Seasons West Bloomfield and has a six-year background in senior living.

Zach Guida presents Michigan Governors History Series Dive into the depths of Michigan history as we examine the legacies of Michigan Governors throughout the state’s history, from the battle for statehood to today. Join Zach Guida, your Director of Life Enrichment, as he facilitates this compelling lifelong learning series.

Quizzo Trivia in the Bistro - Quizzo is a competitive trivia game that challenges you to think and stay on your toes. Did you know? We get a dopamine hit every time we experience the feeling of mastery – the feeling of knowing that we know something. And everyone has one area, one body of knowledge, about which they are – or think they are – an absolute expert! Join us in the Bistro for a professional, themed, curated trivia led by Quizzo!

Book Club Once a month, join Jen Hassell from the Baldwin Public Library for a Book Club discussion on some of the Bestselling Literature of the day. Book Club occurs the Third Thursday of each month.

In April, the ASBH Book club will read “The Reason You’re Alive” by Matthew Quick, a New York Times bestselling author, which features a Vietnam vet embarking on a quixotic crusade to track down his nemesis from the war. Jen Hassell is an Adult Services Librarian at Baldwin Public Library. She has worked in libraries for the past 16 years and has an MLIS from Wayne State University. Organizing book clubs for libraries, friends and schools is something that she has done for over 10 years. Leading book discussions is one of the most fulfilling aspects of her job as they connect reading with community and expand our empathy.

Golden Tones Glee Club Join Dan Bergen each week to sing with your neighbors. Did you know there are several proven emotional and physical benefits of choral singing? Singing in community strengthens feelings of togetherness, regulates heart rate, reduces stress levels and depression, improves symptoms of Parkinson's and lung disease, improves feelings of social well-being, and can even increase life expectancy. And all vocal parts and comfort levels are welcome.

Perfect Pair Intergenerational connections are important for our health, wellness, and awareness and appreciation of the changing world. Stop by to learn more about Perfect Pair, a free program run through the University of Michigan that creates one-on-one connections between seniors and college students. Student volunteers and senior participants are paired based on similar hobbies and interests. Through shared laughs, conversation, and fun activities, members will have the opportunity to foster meaningful and long-lasting relationships with their Perfect Pair.

Poetry & Short Story Readings are a new monthly activity where residents can share their poetry or short stories that they have written or one that has moved them during a particular moment. We have many talented residents; this activity will allow us all to express ourselves in prose and share experiences.

“DETROIT ‘67” AT DETROIT PUBLIC THEATRE The Detroit Public Theatre (DPT) produces nationally recognized plays and programs with world-class writers, directors, actors, and designers in the heart of Midtown Detroit’s thriving cultural district.

The play “Detroit ‘67” sits in the summer of 1967, and the songs of Motown are breaking records and breaking barriers. Chelle and her brother, Lank, are running an unlicensed after-hours joint out of their basement—risky business—especially during a brutal police crackdown that has sparked unrest throughout the city. When Lank offers refuge to a mysterious stranger, he and Chelle clash. Pent-up emotions erupt, and they must navigate the chaos both outside and within. Broadway Playwright Dominique Morisseau is an alumna of The Public Theater Emerging Writers Group, and has developed work at Sundance Lab, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference.

Awards include: Obie Awards, Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellowship, and the MacArthur Genius Grant Fellowship.

Juneteenth - June 19 This week, we will commemorate this day with a documentary on Juneteenth’s history and a celebration of freedom.

Juneteenth commemorates the day when emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, two months after the Civil War ended and more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that Union Gen. Gordon Granger and more than a thousand U.S. troops shared the news of freedom with the 250,000 enslaved people in the state. The anniversary of that day is celebrated as one of the bestregarded African American holidays in this country.

tips All Seasons Residents, Staff, and Families Improve Communication Using Caremerge Family Engagement Beginning in early 2020, when COVID-19 changed the way we engage with our loved ones outside our buildings, residents in our six All Seasons communities wanted an easier way to keep in touch with their families. Using Caremerge as our technology partner, the Family Engagement platform has been an easy tool to use to improve communication and critical to improving isolation and loneliness, which

can have serious health implications in adults, negatively impacting mental and physical health. As we continue to navigate the hardships of the pandemic, family communication remains vitally important.

Caremerge Family Engagement allows staff to upload photos and videos, publish announcements, and survey residents and families about community life.

PHILANTHROPY SPOTLIGHT Birmingham Book Drive

Need to clear your shelves during your spring cleaning? Donate your lightly-used books and literature, and donations will be distributed to a local community organization. Children’s books are particularly useful, as they will go on to provide joy for young readers. Such generosity is a major source of paperback books and an excellent source of titles not owned by libraries in the area. Items which cannot be used will be sold in the friends of the library book sale, or given to other non-profit or charitable organizations.

DESIGNING ALL SEASONS THE MAGIC OF A BÖSENDORFER: AN ALL SEASONS STAPLE least once opined that Bösendorfer and Bechstein pianos were the only instruments capable of withstanding his tremendously powerful playing.

\ You may have noticed the grand pianos which command attention in the grand living spaces of our communities. Maybe you've noticed the way musicians are drawn to them, how they relish in the sounds and feels of bringing a Bösendorfer to life. But if you're unfamiliar with the pianos and their history, you're not alone. Here are just some of the reasons these pianos are truly unique and beloved by the most celebrated pianists throughout history.

In 1824, Ignaz Bosendorfer began refining the handmade pianos of Joseph Brodman, a piano builder in Vienna. Primarily, he wanted to heighten the volume of the instrument, whilst preserving the soft, melodious sound of the string. After having won gold medals at industry exhibitions, Ignaz Bosendorfer was awarded the grand title of ‘Imperial and Royal Fortepiano Purveyor to the Court’ in 1839 by Emperor Ferdinand I because of his work.

Among the earliest artists to be associated with Bösendorfer was Franz Liszt who at

Bösendorfer remains the premier Austrian piano manufacturer and is unusual in that it produces 97- and 92-key models, in addition to instruments with standard 88-key keyboards. Contrary to all other manufacturers, Bösendorfer constructs instruments concentrating on the use of spruce. More than 80% of spruce, ideal for instruments, can be found in Bösendorfer pianos. The whole body - not exclusively the soundboard - supports sound formation.

The actual core of the piano rim consists of a 10 mm quarter-sawn piece that is specially grooved by craftsmen to allow it to be bent to the silhouette around the inner rim. This is unique to Bösendorfer. When a note is played, the integrated spruce components become acoustically active, forming a complete resonating body that allows the whole instrument to project the music.

Also, Bösendorfer is the only piano manufacturer that applies a detachable and independent Capo d’Astro in the upper register. This is how artisans assure the most precise adjustment in the upper register, guaranteeing the original Bösendorfer sound for generations. A COLUMN ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL

WELLNESS CORNER: IKIGAI Sources: BBC by Yukari Mitsuhashi With no direct English translation, Ikigai is a term that embodies the idea of happiness in living. It is composed of two words: iki, which means life, and gai, which describes value or worth. Author and psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya explains that “ikigai” is like happiness but has a subtle difference in its nuance. Ikigai is what allows you to look forward to the future even if you’re unhappy right now. Japanese people believe that the sum of small joys in everyday life results in a more fulfilling life as a whole. Essentially, ikigai is the reason why you get up in the morning.

A concept for longevity?

Japan has some of the longest-living citizens in the world – 87 years for women and 81 for men, according to the country’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.

Could this concept of ikigai contribute to longevity? Author Dan Buettner believes it does. He's the author of “Blue Zones: Lessons on Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” and has travelled the globe exploring long-lived

communities around the world. One such location is Okinawa, a remote island with a remarkably high number of centenarians.

While a unique diet likely has a lot to do with residents’ longevity, Buettner says ikigai also plays a part. “Older people are celebrated, they feel obligated to pass on their wisdom to younger generations,” he says. This gives them a purpose in life outside of themselves, in service to their communities.

What You Can Do Buettner suggests making three lists: your values, things you like to do, and things you are good at. The cross section of the three lists is your ikigai! But, knowing your ikigai alone is not enough. Simply put, you need an outlet. Ikigai is “purpose in action,” he says. For 92-year-old Tomi Menaka, her ikigai is to dance and sing with her peers in the KBG84 dance troupe, she told the Mainichi newspaper. For others, it might be work itself, volunteering, or learning new skills.
