The event showcases the abilities of older adults and their valuable contributions to society while also emphasizing the role models who lead the way. The goal of Active Aging Week is to challenge society's negative perceptions of aging by demonstrating that older adults can thrive in all aspects of life, including physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational, and environmental domains, regardless of age or health status. The campaign seeks to provide older adults with opportunities to engage in wellness activities and exercise in a safe, supportive environment, promoting the benefits of healthy, active lifestyles throughout the lifespan.
At All Seasons Ann Arbor, celebrate Active Aging Week each day with fitness classes, gratitude and mindfulness practices, artmaking, learning, hours filled with social and musical enrichment, and more! Try something different. Challenge yourself. Meet someone new. Don’t forget to refuel! Keep the celebrations going with healthy refreshments in the Bistro, Pub, and Dining Rooms. Did you know? RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Brian describes himself as a Northern Illinois country boy. Both of his parents came from farming families with very limited resources. Despite the circumstances, Brian’s parents emptied the cash register at their small wallpaper business to put a down payment on a baby grand piano, although neither of them played. Nevertheless, having a symbol of culture in the house subliminally shaped the lives of Brian’s brother (who went on to be an internationally renowned art historian) and of Brian (who went on to be an anthropologist and university administrator, including Provost at two major universities). When his parents’ business tanked in the 1950s, Brian spent years supporting the family as owner of an insurance agency. One fateful day, he decided to take a night class 40 miles away at Northern Illinois University. After over a year of
BRIAN FOSTER
commuting, Brian sold his business and moved closer to school to study full-time. He worked as a night clerk in a hotel, where the University housed Peace Corps volunteers who were to serve in Thailand. His exposure to this community led to him becoming a SE Asian specialist, a History major and Anthropology minor. Brian was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and was able to pursue his doctorate at UM. He served as a faculty member at SUNY Binghamton, then as chair of Anthropology, and Graduate Dean at Arizona State. He went on to be Dean of Arts and Science at the University of Nebraska, then as Provost at the University of New Mexico and University of Missouri. He met his wife Lerke, a German girl, at a party at the University, and they were married for 51 years. Lerke lived through the last 20 years of her life with Parkinson’s and passed in 2016. They had two very talented children—one now a physician in Ann Arbor (the reason Brian moved here) and the other a nationally prominent journalist.

This quarter we are highlighting: POETRY WITH AMY JOHNSON Nothing crystallizes a moment quite like poetry.
Join us to continue our journey reading, writing and performing poetry! Amy Johnson returns for four weeks of hour-long word whimsy where no experience is necessary. Collectively we will respond to poems, contemplate and craft original works from prompts, and when ready, perform for each other. Amy received her Masters in Communication with specialization in Interpretation/ Performance Studies at Eastern Michigan University. As a creative writing, interpretation, and performance teacher, Amy Johnson has a wealth of experience helping people express themselves through the art of poetry. She started performing poetry in 1997 at the Green Mill in Chicago, where Slam originated. She continues to write and perform poetically as a member of the Untheatre Company who performs “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.”
STORYTELLING & STORY CIRCLES
Master storyteller Laura Raynor tells a story to spark memories and inspire participants, provides questions and story prompts, opens up the circle for tellers, and includes residents' meaningful objects or photographs as we learn how to craft and appreciate the oldest form of human entertainment - the story.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MUSEUM OF ART “Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina” is a landmark exhibition of more than 60 objects representing the work of African American potters in the decades surrounding the Civil War. Monumental in scale and inscribed with flourishes of cursive script, many pots on view for Hear Me Now are the work of Edgefield’s bestknown artist: the enslaved potter and poet known as Dave, who by the late 1860s appears in official documentation as David Drake. Dave likely made thousands of vessels, and beginning in the 1830s he signed, dated, and inscribed dozens of pots with short verses. He worked at a time when South Carolina law explicitly prohibited enslaved people from learning to read or write. At their core, Dave’s inscriptions were acts of defiance.

ON GLOBAL APPROACHES AND INSIGHTS INTO AGING WELL
WELLNESS CORNER: Green Prescriptions Doctors globally prescribe “green prescriptions” for patients, encouraging more time in nature. Instead of traditional medication, doctors are now prescribing nature visits, even granting yearlong access to national parks, marine areas, and historical sites. The World Health Organization emphasizes nature’s significance for health and wellbeing and its role in recovering from COVID-19.
Studies have linked green spaces to improved health for the elderly, reducing hospital admissions for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Zip code greenness, park coverage, and blue space coverage all played a role. For those with limited outdoor access, consider these green prescription alternatives:

Green prescriptions, initially known for improving • mental health, are now widely used for physical conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. Research suggests that • exposure to environmental microbes can enhance our immune systems and microbial • communities, benefiting overall health. Spending time in nature improves sleep, reduces stress, enhances happiness, and boosts attention, memory, and creativity. In 2020, the UK government invested £4 million ($5.2 million) in a green prescription pilot program as part of its post-COVID-19 recovery plan. In Japan, clinicians have recommended “shinrin yoku” (forest bathing) since 1982, utilizing the country’s extensive woodland walks. In the United States, the Park Rx America platform enables doctors to prescribe nature visits across thousands of parks. You don’t need remote wilderness for nature’s benefits. Just 15 minutes in a city park can boost energy and vitality. Experts recommend a minimum of five hours a month in nature for health benefits.

O CTO B E R
Spend time daily on a balcony, observing greenery, birds, or nature changes. Open a window shade daily and enjoy outdoor views. Draw or sketch outdoor scenes, birds, or animals and display them. Print favorite nature photos and hang them up.
•
Use a desktop digital frame for rotating nature photos.
•
Start a small indoor garden or grow plants from scraps.
•
Assist with tending an outdoor herb garden or nature feature if possible.
•
Engage with a tree: feel its bark, observe its sway, and savor its scent. Practicing intentional time around trees, known as “shinrin-yoku” or forest bathing, can promote health and happiness.
In summary, green prescriptions offer a natural remedy for various health conditions, emphasizing the vital role of nature in human well-being and recovery.

TESTIMONIALS
FROM OUR RESIDENTS & FAMILIES Icon formed this year in a merger between VoiceFriend, provider of the leading HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based two-way communication platform for senior care organizations, and Caremerge, a leader in family and resident engagement. To help residents, Icon is focusing on addressing five key areas where senior living helps residents: • Care • Socialization • Independence • Happiness • Health
Icon has wellness-based programming with activity scheduling and recommendations, all of which can optimize a community’s programming toward the dimensions of wellness that will keep a given resident healthy. If you already have a CareMerge account, don’t worry! It still works, and you don’t have to change a thing. If you don’t have an account, contact your Director of Life Enrichment today for a tutorial, and don’t miss a single activity or community announcement!
Jacquie for ASAA: “For over a year my husband Brian and I have been living at All Seasons… From our window we see the beautiful Parker Mills County Park where we take daily walks in the forest along the Huron River. The tasteful décor of the residence itself provides a restful environment. The staff (too numerous to list individually) could not be more friendly and helpful. We enjoy the delicious home-cooked meals provided by John, the Chef, meals that we often share with non-resident friends. Current residents are welcoming and open to making new friends, ‘we’re all the new kids on the block.’ Most of all we appreciate the feeling nurtured by Robert, the Executive Director, that All Seasons is our home and our community.” Ronald for ASBH: “I love All Seasons, the best decision I ever made. Heather Solomon, our Life Enrichment Director, makes it all possible for us every day.”

Sheri for ASNA: “My dad has been at All Seasons in the memory care unit for 3 months now and Julie Carver, who runs the unit, has been amazing. My siblings and I all live out of town and she has helped to make this transition has seamless as possible. She always gets back to us ASAP and really has my dad’s best interest at heart. Julie is kind, thoughtful and very professional.” Allan for ASWB: “Bree the Sales Counselor is a fantastic person. She has helped me every step of the way to move into All Seasons. I could not have asked for a more brilliant and fabulous person to work with. She has done everything to ensure I will be all set when it becomes time to move into the community.
