A Word Of Thanks From The President

Last year, SCF launched a strategic plan to boldly lead our community in the field of higher education. We are committed to doing what we say, delivering on our promises, and providing a strong return on investment to our students, donors and taxpayers. I’m proud to report that one year into our 2021-2026 strategic plan, our leadership has indeed been bold, our commitments have been honored, and the results, as demonstrated in this report, have been outstanding.

Our donors, community partners and government representatives recognize the critical role we play in our students’ lives, and the essential purpose outside support has in the success of the College and our students. Without this support, we would not have completed so many new capital improvements in recent years, nor would we be in the process of launching even more new degrees that our local workforce demands.

Challenges have become a normal part of our existence; we have met them head-on and remain focused on our fundamentals.

An SCF education is affordable, flexible and high quality. What costs the same today as it did in 2011? A degree at SCF. Our tuition has remained the same for over a decade. Furthermore, our students continue to benefit from class schedules with staggered start dates, multiple methods for learning in person or online, and support services that help every student put their best foot forward toward additional educational pursuits or entry into the workforce.

We knew entrepreneurship was essential to the local economy. Our 26 West Center, featuring the SCF Coding Academy, the Business Growth Lab, and other resources to support the College’s role as an economic engine, creates a corridor between higher education and entrepreneurism.

As we approach the College’s 65th anniversary, we will have a greater enrollment capacity to train registered nurses than ever before. In addition, elementary and exceptional education teachers will soon be able to finish here thanks to approval from the Florida Department of Education and our accrediting body to offer baccalaureate degrees in those critical fields. Finally, we continue refining and enhancing our business programming with modern concentrations like business analytics.

I always praise the perseverance displayed by our students, faculty and staff during changing times. Thanks to their persistence, we aren’t just experiencing change. We are boldly leading as the community’s academic cornerstone.

Signature Programs

SCF offers an array of Signature Programs in its mission to boldly engage students and the community, and to be the region’s first choice for innovative, responsive and quality education. These programs are designed to meet the changing educational needs of our students and local employers to enrich the community where we live, play and work.

CCAMPIS Grant

This grant is co-administered by SCF and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Up to 88 students will benefit from the federal funds over four years, with funding for an additional 32 students supplied by the Community Foundation, for a total impact on 120 students. The students receiving financial assistance will receive vouchers to use at area child care centers. SCF will support the recipients with its full complement of student support services, including college and career success coaches, assistance navigating the financial aid process, and referrals to additional community and government resources.

Dual Enrollment

SCF’s Early College Program, also known as dual enrollment, early admission or accelerated dual enrollment, enables qualified students to enroll in select college credit courses at any of SCF’s campuses, including online. The credits earned count toward both a college degree and a high school diploma. SCF does not charge dual enrollment and early admission students tuition or fees.

Fine and Performing Arts

SCF’s music program offers a solid foundation for a student to successfully transition to a 4-year college or university with an associate in arts degree. In addition, students can perform with the Concert and Chamber Choirs, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and Combo, Music Theatre Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and the SCF Bradenton Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, SCF completed construction of a new Studio for the Performing Arts to enhance its performing arts facilities.

Gator Engineering at State College of Florida

Gator Engineering at State College of Florida is a collaboration between SCF and the University of Florida Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. The program allows students to begin their coursework at SCF, then matriculate to the UF campus in Gainesville to continue engineering studies in their chosen major. Programs include computer science, digital arts and sciences, computer engineering and electrical engineering.

Go Live with SCF Online

In direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCF offered synchronous online courses for the first time. Go Live presented students the option to have online classes with set meeting times and virtual office hours to maximize faculty-student interaction in virtual settings.

Honors Program

This interdisciplinary program is designed to challenge students and develop critical thinking. A capstone service-learning project, which is part of the program, helps develop an understanding of civic engagement. The program includes a series of seminars featuring guest speakers.

Intercollegiate Athletics

SCF has six intercollegiate athletic teams: men’s baseball and basketball, and women’s beach volleyball, softball, tennis and volleyball. The athletic department’s average grade point average has been 3.0 or higher for the past 12 years. SCF has sent 33 baseball players to Major League Baseball.

8 SCF 2022 Annual Report

Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development

SCF’s Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development programs serve business, industry, government and individuals. The College offers onsite contract training for business and industry, online courses and a certified testing center. Software training, business process improvement, leadership/management training and grant writing are among the offerings. Professional and personal development is available to individuals interested in a variety of areas, from learning computer skills, to training to be a private investigator or a wedding planner, to advancing driving skills through the Traffic Safety Institute.

Medical Technology & Simulation Center

Located at SCF Lakewood Ranch, the Medical Technology & Simulation Center (MTSC) is a two-story, 42,000-square-foot building and one of the premier training facilities for nursing and health professions in the state. The MTSC also houses the nursing skills lab, nursing assessment lab and intensive care unit lab with state-of-the-art technology including patient simulators, electronic medical records, drug recognition system and medication-dispensing devices. The MTSC hosts collaborative training exercises between SCF Bachelor of Science in Nursing students and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) students and is designated as one of four regional training centers for the Florida Healthcare Simulation Alliance.

Nursing and Health Professions

The health professions programs at SCF are ranked among the top in the state based on student performance and affordability. Nursing is offered on all three campuses as well as online, and combines coursework on campus with guided clinical experiences in health care settings in both Manatee and Sarasota counties. Students in health professions, including dental hygiene, nursing, physical therapist assistant and occupational therapy assistant, are well known in the community for their volunteerism.

Science and Manufacturing

SCF expanded its STEM capabilities by completing an extensive renovation and expansion of the SCF Bradenton science complex. The new 11,900-square-foot science building includes a faculty office suite and 55-seat lecture hall on the first floor, and two labs, a lab prep room and a classroom on the second floor. The renovation of Building 25 included new finishes, furniture, lighting, audiovisual and HVAC upgrades, full restroom remodels, front entrance and breezeway enhancements, and landscaping. A similar upgrade to STEM facilities at SCF Venice will begin in 2022-23.

The work SCF’s science students accomplish far exceeds what many would expect of a two-year program. Biotechnology students, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Thomas and Dr. Eric Warrick, discovered a novel strand of DNA in an antibiotic producing bacteria. The discovery, along with the names of the seven participating students, has been published in the repository DNA database of the National Institutes of Health.

Graduates in STEM programs leave SCF with the knowledge and skills to enter the workplace. SCF alumni are conducting research in laboratories or managing manufacturing operations at production facilities regionally and nationally. The College is continually adapting to keep this important curriculum on the cutting edge of local economic needs.

TRIO Student Support Services

The U.S. Department of Education awarded SCF a highly competitive TRIO Student Support Services grant. Through TRIO, SCF will further its student service initiatives designed to identify and provide year-round academic and financial coaching and/or other integral services for first-generation college students, those from underserved economic backgrounds or students with disabilities.

You Can Get Anywhere from Here

For students, graduating from SCF represents a beginning, but for those of us at the College, it brings a sense of accomplishment as we fulfill our mission to graduate students who are prepared to advance in rewarding careers and to pursue upper-level degrees here at SCF or at other institutions. These graduates embody our vision that with an SCF education, you can get anywhere from here.

16 SCF 2022 Annual Report

Debra Riva ‘85 Associate in Arts

The path into the legal profession wasn’t always easy or barrier-free for the Honorable Judge Debra Riva ‘85. The support of her family and her community allowed her to attend SCF, and she has never stopped giving back. Throughout an accomplished career as a prosecutor, teacher and circuit court judge, Riva has always found ways to give back to her beloved community.

Riva knew she wanted to attend college and that affordability would be key, but she also had a strong desire for independence. She moved, got an apartment, worked full time and attended SCF (then Manatee Junior College). Riva’s experience at SCF left such a powerful impression that when she decided to give back to future legal professionals by teaching, she chose to become an adjunct instructor at SCF.

“I just loved it! I always had an interest in teaching, and as soon as I became a lawyer, I learned there was a need for lawyers to teach criminal justice and legal assisting classes,” Riva said. “I’m passionate about adult education, and I taught for almost 15 years, right up until becoming a judge.”

Riva was elected three times to the 12th Circuit Court bench before announcing her retirement in 2022.

“SCF has given so many young people the opportunity to receive a higher education, and a good one. I would put that education up against any other in the state.”

Bashar Roumia ‘18 Associate in Arts

When Bashar Roumia ‘18 came to Sarasota from Syria in 2014, it was too late to enroll in a traditional high school while assimilating to life in America. Knowing his ultimate goal was to be the third generation of his family to become a doctor, he instead set out to gain access to an affordable college education as quickly as possible. Now he’s preparing for his medical boards at Ross University.

“I wanted to stay with my family and stay close, and I needed a quick start,” Roumia said.

“SCF provided that, and it was an incredible experience.”

Roumia knew the quality of education meant more than the name of the institution. At SCF he found exceptionally passionate professors, including Dr. Anthony Gambino, who not only motivated Roumia to thrive in his science courses but also was instrumental in nominating him for the chemistry student of the year award, bestowed at Honors Convocation.

“Everyone hates organic chemistry, but Dr. Gambino made it so interesting in both Organic Chemistry I and II! He’s forever memorable,” Roumia said.

Jody Rain ‘14 B.S. in Nursing

Jody Rain ‘14 is a two-time graduate of SCF, becoming a registered nurse through the College in 2001, and later completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2014. She has since achieved a master’s degree and is working on her second master’s degree.

Rain’s wealth of nursing experience and her advocacy within the health care field has led Gov. Ron DeSantis to appoint her to the Florida Board of Nursing twice, most recently in 2022. She served as the director of emergency care at Manatee Memorial Hospital, and has been recognized for her leadership and dedication to that role. She is now a director of clinical solutions at Collective Medical. Previously, she was president of the Manasota Chapter of the Emergency Nurses Association.

Rain returned to SCF as the guest speaker for the Fall 2021 Nurse Pinning ceremony, sharing with graduates that “health care is always evolving. There is always a new skill, a new specialty, a new procedure or medication to learn. If you ever get comfortable with your skill set, it’s time to develop a new one.”
