FIND YOUR EXPERIENCE original

When was the last time you walked Wisconsin’s longest trestle bridge, toured the first home to be illuminated, or attended a 700-set original music festival? Have you ever gone to the nation’s oldest flag day parade, hiked a state park trail, and visited a county’s first brewery… all in one day?

Here in the Fox Cities, all that and more is possible. Built on a foundation of innovation and entrepreneurship, the Fox Cities are a hotbed of originality with hundreds of years of history to prove it.

This is a place where creativity is celebrated, new ideas are encouraged, and boundaries are meant to be pushed. You can’t find authentic Caribbean cuisine and a Christmasthemed bar in every destination, but you can bet you'll find it here.

Originality is definitely our thing, but we want it to be yours, too. Pack your bags, gather your people, and find your original experience in the Fox Cities.

THE BEGINNING

The Fox Cities were originally inhabited by several Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Oneida, and Ho-Chunk, who relied on the abundant resources of the Fox River Valley for sustenance and trade. Some of the first Europeans to explore the region were French fur traders and missionaries in the 17th century. Thanks to the Fox River, the fur trade flourished, and Dutch, German, Polish, and Irish immigrants were soon to follow.

In the early 19th century, the Fox Cities saw significant development with the arrival of all these settlers. Lawrence University, one of the nation's first coeducational colleges, was founded in Appleton in 1847, marking a milestone in education. The completion of the Fox Locks system and the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway in the mid-1800s further facilitated transportation and trade, propelling the region's growth.

17th century

THE BOOM

Industrialization played a pivotal role in shaping the Fox Cities' identity. Paper production emerged as a dominant industry during the late 19th century, capitalizing on the region's vast timber resources and the Fox River's hydroelectric power. Companies like Kimberly-Clark Corporation, founded in Neenah in 1872, became global leaders in the paper industry, driving economic prosperity and employment opportunities in the area. Over time, the Fox Cities have continued to hold strong in manufacturing while also becoming home to a variety of other industries such as healthcare and technology.

THE HISTORY OF THE PAPER VALLEY

THE PRESENT

In the last few decades, the Fox Cities region has seen great urbanization and diversification within its communities. The riverbanks have been transformed into recreational areas while former paper and saw mills are now condos, hotels, restaurants, and more. The history of the region is celebrated through various museums, historic sites, and events, ensuring that the legacy of the Fox Cities remains alive and cherished for generations to come.

MIHM’S

Good things come in small packages. This old adage rings especially true when it comes to Mihm’s Charcoal Grill – a tiny, beloved culinary hotspot in Downtown Menasha since 1958. The small but mighty operation is under new ownership as of December 2022 through Ryan and Amber Bergner, and they continue to offer exceptional Wisconsin and Midwest classics such as butter burgers, chili, madefrom-scratch chicken dumpling soup, and malts. Buns are baked fresh each day by Manderfield’s Home Bakery and the rest of

their ingredients are locally sourced, high-quality products. Thanks to Ryan and Amber, the legendary Mihm’s lives on for the next generation to enjoy.

A NEW CHAPTER IN A FAMILIAR STORY

“Door County was home for the past 9 years. We decided to move back to the Fox Cities after learning we were pregnant with our son Levi to be closer to family. Ryan always dreamed of owning a place so when Mihm’s came on the market, things started coming together. We wanted to keep Mihm’s how people

always remembered it but we also wanted to add our own flare. The benefit burger, for example, is a bi-monthly rotating burger that allowed us to add our own spin to the menu while honoring the traditional Mihm’s experience.”

THE BEST PART OF OPERATING MIHM’S

“We love learning why people love Mihm’s. Beyond the good food, so many people find a way to connect with this place and everyone has a story about it. Whether this is where their grandparents met or where they had a first date, it’s a beacon of nostalgia.”

RYAN AND AMBER’S FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THE FOX CITIES

“Each of the communities have all done a great job with having their own style of a downtown. From Menasha, Neenah, Appleton and beyond there are a lot of reasons to check out local shops. Whether you’re interested in a book store or jewelry, you’ll find something to enjoy. Also, we appreciate the variety and diversity of food options like Thai and Indian cuisine that are all available here.”

BEGINNERS’ GUIDE TO Supper Clubs

How do you know you’re from Wisconsin or a surrounding midwestern state? Old fashioneds, relish trays, and Friday night fish can only mean one thing: it’s supper club time.

Wisconsin’s beloved supper clubs first emerged

on the dining scene back in the early 1900s. Characterized by unassuming exteriors and dimly lit interiors, supper clubs were created for leisurely dining with family and friends, a distinctive quality that remains unchanged. At this type

of restaurant where long wait times are both expected and accepted, diners spend the first half of the night laughing, chatting, and enjoying drinks around the bar. Old fashioneds are the drink of choice but beware – they’re different (and better!) when you order them in Wisconsin. More on that in a bit.

When it’s time for dinner, you’ll likely start out with the option of a salad bar or relish tray that comes complimentary with the meal. Typical entrées include steak, prime rib, fish or chicken…and it’s a sure bet you’ll go home with leftovers. But wait –we’re not done yet! End the night with an ice cream drink from the bar, choosing from popular options such as a grasshopper or brandy alexander. With a full stomach and an empty glass, your supper club journey is officially complete. Until next time!

A FOX CITIES ORIGIN STORY

Kyle Megna, a Kaukauna native, has quite the resume. In addition to owning and operating 313 Dodge with his wife, Janel, Megna is an accomplished singer/ songwriter and lead vocalist for Kyle Megna & the Monsoons.

Having a front row seat to the evolution of music in the Fox Cities, Megna has watched both the community and country embrace the Fox Cities as a premier destination for live and original music.

PUTTING THE FOX CITIES ON THE MAP

Megna

KYLE’S JOURNEY

“Music has always been in my life and I began writing songs in high school. When I was ready to create my first CD, I moved to Tennessee because I thought the experience wasn’t here yet in the Fox Cities. As it turns out, the musicians have always been here but the scene just needed a little spark.”

ABOUT THAT SPARK…

“When I came back to the Fox Cities, it was the first year of a new original

music festival called Mile of Music. This was the spark we needed. There were some amazing, killer musicians in this area and our community started to adapt to the culture of original music. Venues started to realize they could get people in the door by having artists with original music that people wanted to listen to.”

For more about Megna’s music and 313 Dodge, check out @kylemegna and @313dodge

“I’ve played in every Mile of Music since 2013 and artists from outside the area believe this a music community unlike any they’ve ever seen. For real. The number of bands that come from Nashville, Minneapolis, and Chicago is growing. Some of them have bigger followings up here than they do in their own state and that’s not an exaggeration.”

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL?

“In the Fox Cities, you’re not just the guy performing in the corner of the bar. One of my favorite venues is Gibson Community Music Hall because it emphasizes the music in a listening room environment. As shows continue to lean more towards ticketed entry, that money supports the bands you like, allowing both local and national artists to have more opportunities to play in the Fox Cities.”

HEART OF THE VALLEY AREA

The Heart of the Valley spans the entire eastern portion of the Fox Cities area. Residents enjoy close proximity to trails including the Loop the Locks trail, a one-of-a-kind waterfront adventure which takes you by hand-operated lock systems, across dams, past paper mills and through a mix of historic downtowns. The area’s natural beauty along with an abundance of housing options and toprated school systems make this a desirable location for young families.

Nicknamed “The Electric City” because of its five hydroelectric plants, Kaukauna is home to two popular tourist attractions, the Charles A. Grignon Mansion and 1000 Islands Environmental Center. Deeply rooted in the rich history of the area’s papermaking industry,

Kimberly is home to Paperfest, an annual four-day celebration with live music, food trucks, carnival games and a car show. Originality and charm shine through in Little Chute, which celebrates its Dutch heritage with a full-size working windmill in the town center.

The southern end of the region is home to High Cliff State Park in Sherwood. Part of the Niagara escarpment, the park’s limestone quarries, effigy mounds, and stunning panoramic views of Lake Winnebago make it a popular spot for the outdoor enthusiast. Hike, bike, camp, fish, swim, or horseback ride on a visit to High Cliff.

The Community First Champion Center is also located in Grand Chute and features a year-round ice rink plus fieldhouse spaces that can accommodate eight basketball courts or twelve volleyball courts. A short drive from all the action is one of

the country’s fastest growing airports, the Appleton International Airport (ATW).

Along with a growing industrial and commercial sector, Fox West has maintained strong ties to its agriculture heritage. Family-owned farms dot the landscape and are suppliers of dairy products, corn, ethanol, and alfalfa.
