Chetek Visitor’s Center

The Chetek resort owners association is proud to continue our Cabins For Cupboards program. We are going to be collecting a variety of items for the Chetek Area Food Shelf. Many cabin guests leave behind canned goods and other non-perishable food items. We want to not only gather what is already left behind but ask cabin guests to donate their unused items. The Food Shelf can accept canned, boxed and unopened food items. We can also help by collecting paper products such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, plastic and paper plates, foil and other such items. We also are looking for help with soap, dish soap and shampoo items that are often too costly for some families. With the help of our summer guests, we are hoping to have a big impact on the availability of goods during the summer months when giving seems to be at its lowest level. If you have a seasonal home, you can donate items to any local resort and they will be donated to the Food Shelf. Please help us assist local families who need some help.

The Chetek Food Shelf is located at 50 Hwy Blvd South, chetek and can be contacted at 715-925-3500

welcome

Welcome to Chetek! Whether it’s your first time visiting our town or you return to us annually, welcome to the city of lakes... Chetek, Wisconsin! Fishing, pontooning, kayaking, water skiing, canoeing – whatever your reason and however you choose to navigate about the Chain of Lakes, wonderful waters and memories await you. In town, there’s opportunity for shopping or picnicking at one of our beautiful city parks, and within a short drive, there are all kinds of opportunities for golfing, running, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, hunting and the like. We don’t say that we have it all here, but if you’re looking for a place to unwind, relax, to recharge your batteries and catch your second wind; we have that and then some! Enjoy your stay and we’re hoping you’ll like it so much you’ll come back! Jeff Martin, Mayor of Chetek

Welcome to the City of Chetek

from the Chetek Resort Owners Association and Chamber of Commerce The Chetek Resort Owners’ Association and the Chetek Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome you to Chetek and the Big Six Chain of Lakes. Whether you’ve been here before, are visiting for the 1st time or are just considering the wonderful Chetek area, we are excited to share our community with you. With 39 member resorts and over 160 Chamber of Commerce members, Chetek offers a wide variety of options for you and your family. Our Chain of Lakes extends to cover over 3,800 surface acres with more than 68 miles of shoreline. We boast what many say are the best panfish they’ve ever eaten. The lakes boast thriving populations of walleye, northern pike, large & smallmouth bass, bluegills, crappies, pumpkinseeds & perch. The Chetek area offers a variety of amenities & activities for all ages including local parks, Hydroflites water ski shows, as well as numerous local shops & restaurants. We also host several community events (see pages 5053) such as Liberty Fest, Water Mania, Taste of Chetek, Winter Fest and more. Many people just love Chetek’s relaxing lake life atmosphere whether it’s lounging on the shore or cruising in your boat.

With 2,400 year-round residents, Chetek is a family oriented community. There is also a thriving population of seasonal residents and we welcome our valued visitors throughout the year. Whether you’re visiting family, attending an event or making chetek your home, we believe you will find warm, helpful & friendly people and an appreciative business community while spending time in the City of Lakes. The members of the Chetek Resort Owners’ Association and the Chetek Chamber of Commerce are pleased to bring you this Visitor’s Guide featuring area attractions, local festivals, events, member resorts and nearby businesses that make Chetek a wonderful place. Without them, this book would not be possible. As you are looking for places to go, things to do or local services, please patronize these advertisers who, with you in mind, participated in the Visitor’s Guide. Their participation makes it possible to operate the Chetek Information Booth and Chamber events enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year. Jane Thurston, President Chetek Resort Owners Association Darryl Dahl, President Chetek Chamber of Commerce

new around town Come See For Yourself With our show site on Lakeview Drive completed, there is truly not a bad seat in the place! We’ve also updated our fleet of boats and we are more ready than ever to entertain crowds at our bi-weekly water ski shows. Our shows are one of the best free entertainment events in the area. If you have time on Thursdays and Sundays during the summer, stop down and see a show! Our schedule and other information can be found at www.hydroflites.com.

Chetek visitor’s Guide 2021

Chetek was first settled in 1863 and platted on Oct. 15, 1875, on land owned by Knapp, Stout & Co. and E. M. Sexton. Chetek was never incorporated as a village but became an incorporated city in 1891. At the time, Chetek was the first and only city in the United States to pass directly from a township system to a full-fledged city. It was also the smallest incorporated city in the United States, having a population then of only 531 people. The origin of the name “Chetek” is mired

in controversy. From a variety of sources we are given several explanations as to how the name was derived. One historian says the name “Chetek,” which Ojibway Indians called “Sheetak,” means pelican, literally little pelican. This is to distinguish it from Big Chetac located farther north. Another theory says that the name was given by Knapp, Stout & Co. lumbermen for a Chippewa Indian Chief, whose name by various writers was spelled Chetek, Shetek, Shetack, Shetuc,

and Chetack, respectively, with the meaning being “between two rivers,” or confluence of rivers. In 1993, a theory presented itself claiming the origin of Chetek comes from the Ojibway word Tchitchag which is part of their high or spiritual language and means soul. Lands now under water due to the higher water levels resulting from the dam were once sacred burial grounds for the native residents. The true origin of the name may forever be a mystery.

Library

The Calhoun Memorial Library will be using the national summer reading program theme, “Imagine Your Story”. We will discover fairy tales and folklore from around the world. We will encourage using our imaginations to create our own stories and art work. Books will be shared, followed by a time of crafts or activities. Caregivers are expected to remain with children. Toddlers, preschoolers and elementary-age children are welcome to attend the Summer Library Program, “Libraries Rock!”

The Chetek Area Book Club

meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Call the library to learn which books will be discussed.

The library has Wi-Fi service 24 hours a day. The signal is available inside the building and outside within 100 feet. Use the “publiclibrary” network. No password is required. Six public access computers are available during business hours. Each computer is connected to the internet and a printer. Scanner, copy machine and fax services are also available.

Big Six Chain of Lakes

BIG SIX CHAIN OF LAKES Chetek, the City of Lakes, is located in northwestern Wisconsin on the Big Six Chain of Lakes — but how many other details of these bodies of water and the land surrounding them is well known? Did you know that these six lakes — Chetek, Prairie, Pokegama, Moose Ear, Ten Mile and Ojaski — cover 3,800 surface acres. The smallest, Moose Ear Lake, covers 33.6 surface acres, Lake Chetek, covers just 683 surface acres, while Prairie Lake has 1,545 surface acres. Lake Chetek is the deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 22 feet. Fish populations in these lakes include Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers.

MOOSE EAR LAKE On the lower part of Moose Ear Creek,

this lake has 33.6 surface acres with a maximum depth of just 6 feet, and has a warm water fish population. An intermittent stream from Couderay Lake and a spring feeder from a pond also supply water to the stream. A 150 acre wetland adjoining the stream near Moose Ear Lake provides habitat for muskrats and nesting puddle ducks.

CHETEK LAKE With a maximum depth of 22 feet, Chetek Lake has a total of 683 surface acres. It is a recreational lake and is surrounded on most of its area by permanent residences, summer homes, resorts, and the City of Chetek. The city operates a public swimming beach during the summer months and a large public boat landing is located near the city Airport on Lakeview Drive. Lake Chetek is also the site of the Hydroflites Water Ski Team’s shows, which are held throughout the summer from their property located adjacent to the boat landing on Lakeview Drive.

TEN MILE LAKE

This lake at the southern most point of the Chain has a depth of 10 feet and 393 surface acres. This lake is also a soft water drainage impoundment in the Chetek Lake Chain. Muskrats, nesting mallards and wood ducks use the 27 acres of lake edge wetlands.

OJASKI LAKE Located in the Town of Chetek, Ojaski Lake

(also known locally as Mud Lake) covers 567.1 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 15 feet. Pokegama Creek, which flows into Ojaski Lake from the north, provides a spawning area for northern and walleye. Located in a farming area, the lake is surrounded by upland hardwoods. white pine and cultivated farmland. About three acres of

32

Chetek visitor’s Guide 2021

marsh wetlands on the northeast shore provide habitat for muskrats, nesting mallards, teal and wood ducks.

POKEGAMA LAKE With 494 surface acres and a maximum

depth of 19 feet, Pokegama Lake is a very popular fishing lake. A soft water drainage lake in the Chetek Chain between Ojaski Lake and Lake Chetek, the immediate lakeshore vegetation is pine and hardwood with the exception of several marsh-edged bays. These marshes provide habitat for muskrats and puddle ducks. Keep your eyes peeled when cruising along the shorelines as deer and other wildlife come down to get a drink of water. Another sight becoming more common each year are Bald Eagles soaring above the lakes, catching fish to feed themselves and their young.

PRAIRIE LAKE With 1,545 surface acres, Prairie Lake is the

largest lake in the Chetek Lake Chain with 16 feet max depth. A soft water drainage lake, the lake level is maintained by the dam on Lake Chetek, which controls the water levels on the Chetek Chain, and the fish species consist of all those named previously. The lakeshore is predominantly upland hardwoods and pine, and three acres of marsh edge along the lake provide habitat for muskrats, nesting ducks. Coot and Canadian geese also use the lake during spring and fall migratory periods. The haunting call of the loon can be heard during the early and late migration times. It is in these waters that the famous floating islands originated, moving from time to time to different locations. The lake runs from the north side of Chetek northward, almost to Cameron and Highway 8. While much of the shoreline is developed with residential homes, cabins and resorts; there is still a large portion of the lake that remains wild, offering natural settings for fishing along the banks of the lake.

Moraine The ninth and newest unit of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scientific Reserve is Chippewa Moraine State Recreation area, which encompasses over 4,000 acres of unique and interesting glacial formations. Dotted throughout the property are numerous small glacial kettle lakes, beaver meadows and tranquil ponds. Fish populations thrive in some of these water bodies, but others are home only to a wide variety of frogs, reptiles, turtles and unseen, secretive pond life creatures.

The interpretive center is open Tuesday–Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call ahead before visiting on a holiday as some are designated as closed days.

The Ice Age National Trail (which begins at Interstate State Park in St. Croix Falls and ends at Potawatomi State Park in Door County) will eventually provide the hiker with over 1,200 miles of interesting glacial terrain. At Chippewa Moraine, 13 miles of trails offer an assortment of hiking choices—including three popular loop trails. For the more ambitious, a walk to the easternmost end of this segment culminates at Brunet Island State Park in Cornell. Trails are non-motorized with bicycles and horses also not allowed. Well-behaved dogs are encouraged to visit with their owners (treats upon

The Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls chapter of Muskies Inc. would like to inform you of our annual musky tournament which is held the third weekend every September, which will be the 17th, 18th, and 19th in 2021. The tournament is attended by 200 – 250 anglers and is held on 17 bodies of waters in Rusk, Barron, Chippewa, and Eau Claire counties. Our goal is to promote the sport of musky fishing with an emphasis on a variety of prizes being awarded from various tournament sponsors. Chetek visitor’s Guide 2021

request at the interpretive center office). Winter time visitors are encouraged to borrow a pair of our snowshoes and enjoy some quiet time enjoying the beauty of our winter paradise. Over 60 pairs of snowshoes are available and will fit all ages, including the smallest of children. No rental fees are charged but donations are appreciated. Remote campsites are available on a first-come-first-served basis and have a fee of $16 per night. Inside the visitor center are glacial, cultural and natural history displays. Family based nature films can help to fill in a rainy day with bored children. Other popular films explain the glacial process, early logging and river driving. Staff naturalists encourage a hands-on approach and will gladly get out a snake or turtle for children to hold. Nets are available for grasshopper catching and critter feeding. Indoor scavenger hunts (10 different editions) are extremely popular with visiting children, offering up a choice of a prize after being ‘quizzed’ by a patient naturalist.

MUSKY ToUrnaMenT

In 2019 a total of 63 muskies were caught during the three-day tournament with the biggest being a 51.25-inch fish. The banquet for the tournament is held at Paradise Shores on Lake Holcombe with awards beginning at 1:00 pm on Sunday of the tournament. All contestants to catch a fish will receive a prize from the prize table. Door prizes are also given away for those in attendance. Muskies Inc. is a national “not for profit” organization that promotes Youth, Fisheries, and Research

and this annual tournament is the chapter’s main fund raising activity. All proceeds from fundraising activities are used in the west central Wisconsin area to support environmental education, youth camp sponsorship, outings for veterans, fish stocking, habitat enhancement, restoration projects, water quality preservation, and much more. We work in conjunction with area lake associations, the Rod and Gun club, and various other restoration and preservation groups.

Walleyes for chetek Walleyes for Chetek had another excellent year in 2020 as they continue their efforts to rebuild the Chetek Chain of Lakes as the “walleye capital of Wisconsin.” The local organization raises funds annually to stock extended-growth walleyes into the Chetek Chain in order to increase the walleye population throughout the fishery. In Sept. 2020, the local organization stocked 12,000 extended-growth walleye (7–13 inches in length) into the Chetek Chain of Lakes—something the organization has done since 2003. Purchasing larger, juvenile walleyes increases the survival rate for the stocked fish to nearly 80 percent. Counting the last three years of the DNR’s stocking (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019), plus Walleyes for Chetek’s additional fish they have stocked, there has been nearly 185,000 walleyes put into the Chetek chain in roughly seven years. In the 15 years of stocking—the DNR does not allow Walleyes for Chetek to stock the same years as the DNR stocks the Chetek Chain—the local organization has purchased and released more than 102,000 extended growth walleyes at a cost of approximately $196,000. This is the seventh

year that the Walleyes for Chetek officers—Tyler Florczak, Josh Akins, James Akins, Ryan Gonzales and Matt Brandemeuhl—are heading the organization after co-founders Paul Pawlisch, Larry Grabowski and Larry Stafsholt handed over the reins and responsibilities of the Walleyes for Chetek in 2013. The walleyes supplied to the Chetek Chain are hatched and raised by Gollon Bait & Fish Farm, of Dodgeville. The cost is $2.00 per fish, and all of the funds raised through donations and sales of raffle tickets that are sold annually go toward the purchase of walleye. “Open water anglers and ice fishing anglers have reported catching many more and larger walleyes in the last few years, and they are growing at an incredible rate. They are all extremely healthy fish, according to the fish surveys on the Chetek Chain and fishing reports form local and visiting anglers. That proves that a fishery can be improved when the community gets involved,” Walleyes for Chetek officer Josh Akins stated. “We have received an unbelievable amount of support for our Walleyes for Chetek raffle giveaway on Labor Day weekend each year. We appreciate all of

the donations and support we receive each year from Gilligans, the Chetek Resort Owners Association, Chetek Lakes Protection Association, along with all of the local businesses, organizations and individuals who donate or sponsor to make the stocking possible.” Besides stocking fish into the the lakes, Walleyes for Chetek has also begun to take on some other lake projects that will enhance Chetek’s fishery for years to come. The local organization is also working with the CLPA this winter to create more fish habitat along shorelines with a project called Fish Sticks. In 2017, the local non-profit organziation purchased and posted 30 new walleye fishing regulations signs at public boat landings/access areas around the Chetek Chain, Chetek dam and Red Cedar River. To garner funding, the organization will once again hold a Labor Day Weekend raffle with a grand prize of $2,000, as well as various other prizes, raffles, giveaways, silent auction items and more; tickets are available at local sports shops, resorts, restaurants/bars and other retailers. This year’s Walleyes for Chetek raffle will again take place at Gilligans in Chetek on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021.

WE LOVE OUR LAKES! We are so fortunate to be part of the Chetek Chain of Lakes. Whether you’re boating to a restaurant, participating in a fishing tournament, watching the Hydroflites ski team, swimming, or site-seeing natural habitat, there are so many ways to enjoy our lakes. To ensure that we get to enjoy and pass on this local treasure to future generations, the Chetek Lakes Protection Association (CLPA) was formed in 1995. The CLPA’s mission

is to preserve and protect the Chetek Chain of Lakes for today’s enjoyment and our grandchildren. We are able to fulfill this mission with the tireless support of volunteers, community fundraisers, member dues and donations from residents, visitors, and local businesses. Current CLPA projects include: 1) Water sample/monitoring, 2) an EcoHarvestor to skim algae and remove potential invasive species from back-bays and channels, 3) FishSticks to promote fish habitat, 4) Educational signs and brochures, and 5) the Healthy Lakes Program to advance infiltration, buffer strips, and rain gardens to stop unwanted

materials from entering the lake. Four ways everyone can help protect our lakes: 1. Don’t let ash from a lake side fire pit or unwanted grass/leaves enter the lake. The ashes, grass, and leaves feed unwanted algae! 2. Inspect boats and trailers after use in the lakes to prevent the spread of non-native species. 3. Maintain vegetation along shorelines to prevent excess fertilizer and other nutrients entering the lake. 4. Obey no-wake zones within 100 feet of shoreline to prevent erosion. Reduce boat motor speeds in shallow areas to prevent churning up sediment along the lake bottom.

if you enjoy the lakes as a resident or a visitor, we can always use additional support through monetary donations or your time/talent. information to become a member or to donate is available by phone, email, website…and you can Like the Chetek Lakes Protection association on facebook!

CLPA Skimmer In 2016, the Chetek Lakes Protection Association (CLPA) purchased an EcoHarvester algae and weed skimmer. The purchase was funded through support of the community and lake property owners. Over $70,000 was raised, including a $30,000 match from an anonymous donor, covering the initial cost of the harvester and a dump trailer. Then in 2018, a dedicated tow vehicle was donated and a new transfer barge was brought on line to improve efficiency of the operation. The purpose of the harvester is to

remove submerged growing weeds and collect algae or other floating plant debris. All administration, operation and maintenance labor is provided by resident volunteers. And direct operational and maintenance costs are paid with donations and dues. Since skimming operations began in 2016, we have removed 2,705 cubic yards or roughly 450,000 pounds of plant material from the lakes, enough to fill 225 dump trucks! After it is removed, the material is composted, mixed with other organic material and

used as fertilizer. 2020 marks the fifth year of skimming operations. Our records indicate a 2025% year over year reduction in the amount of material we remove. A coincidence? Result of changes in the weather? Time will tell as more data is collected, however the trend is certainly moving in the right direction. And the data is supported by an increasing number of positive comments we receive from property owners and visitors. We believe we are making a difference!

• Found in warm, shallow and weedy areas and also around structure, weed lines and underwater points. Depth varies from 2 feet of water to 15 feet. • Feed by sight and hunt for their food by ambushing unwary prey from behind logs, below boat docks and at weed lines that drop into deeper water. They eat insects, worms, leeches, suckers, shiners, shad, frogs and fish under 12 inches in size. • Average length in Chetek Chain is 14 to 17 inches

walleye (Sander vitreus) • Generally dawn and dusk are the feeding times for this light sensitive fish—they are a schooling fish, and like the perch, can be found within a few feet of the bottom near rock bars, drop offs and underwater points • Feed primarily on minnows and other small fish, but will eat insects, leeches and worms • Average length in Chetek Chain is 14 to 22 inches

northern pike (Esox lucius) • Can be found in virtually all water depths throughout the year • Prefer shallow, cool water with extensive weeds/weed lines • As lake waters warm, they often seek cooler waters near inlets streams and springs • A voracious feeder that finds most fish and creatures—even ducks, squirrels and sandpipers are fair game—feed primarily on suckers, shiners, shad and fish 18 inches or under. • Average length in Chetek Chain is 24 to 32 inches

CWHS graduates are seeing more and more post-secondary opportunities, and it is because of this that your donation is needed now, more than ever. We see a growing number of graduates going to 4-year and 2-year colleges, as well as many who attend technical schools. In order to afford these opportunities, many rely on financial aid, which results in debt often difficult to repay. We encourage all students to apply for any and all scholarships, which include all of those offered through the CWSF. At no point should a graduate be discouraged about seeking future education simply because of a lack of funds. Your donation helps to secure the future of our CWHS graduates. Outdoor Recreation & Trails

OutdOOr recreatiOn & trails All-terrain Vehicles The Chetek ATV Club has over 100 members. The Club has many members from outside the immediate area to help support our efforts and to provide ATV enthusiasts opportunities to ride our trails. Our trails are made possible by some very generous private land owners that allow our trails to cross over their land. The Club has many volunteers to maintain trails and road routes. The Mission of the Chetek ATV Cruzers is to conserve, maintain, enhance and establish All Terain Vehicle Trails and routes in Barron County.

Join the Club! Your membership means support for the local, state, and federal efforts to keep trails open and to utilize the public lands for recreational enjoyment. Your membership also helps to educate ATV users on trail etiquette and considerate trail use, so that we can retain our privileges and support the people who enjoy the great outdoors on their ATVs & UTVs. Your membership also helps to pay for the maintenance and cleaning of the trails. The Chetek ATV Club works hard to maintain the trails for everyone who uses them. There is access to the ATV routes and trails from most of the Chetek resorts. There is a trail-head in the Chetek Industrial Park behind Parker Hannifin where riders can unload their machines and park trucks/trailers. ATV city maps and Barron county maps are available at the Chetek Visitors Center and at most Chetek businesses. Please ride safely and always ride with your headlights on so others can see you coming.

Check us out on Facebook (ChetekAtvCruzers) New members are always welcome

Snowmobiling Barron County has over 250 miles of groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails. The trail-head of the Tuscobia State Trail, a 76-mile abandoned railroad bed, begins just north of Rice Lake and ends in Park Falls. “Rails to Trails” is the Wild Rivers Trail which also begins in Rice Lake and covers 97 miles, going north to Superior. For the latest information on trail conditions, call 715-234-2126 or 800-523-6318 or visit www.travelwisconsin.com. The local snowmobile club is the Chetek Snow Flyers. To obtain more information about this organization and/or membership in the club, please contact President Mike Schmidt at 715-829-8925, email cheteksnowflyers@yahoo.com, visit www.cheteksnowflyers.net or search Chetek Snow Flyers on Facebook. Lodging in the Chetek area is available during the winter by contacting the Chetek Resort Owners Association. Visit their website, www.explorechetek. com and click on Info Request Form to inquire with the members that have availability.

cross country ski, snowshoe, hiking & running trail The cross country ski/snowshoe/hiking/running trail begins behind the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser High School/Middle School building on the west edge of town off of Knapp Street. There is ample parking at the start of the route. The trail begins adjacent to the maintenance shed located next to the baseball field. The cross country ski/snowshoe trail loops out onto Bailey Lake. If you’re interested in the hiking/running trail, follow the school loop that is located behind the school. This trail is used by the cross country running team when school is in session.

Fish-o-rama

Fish-ORama

Youngster catches first $500 tagged fish of 2020 on Prairie Lake Panfishing paid off for the Davis family, of Chillicothe, Ill., as Tom Davis, middle, landed the first $500 panfish of the 2020 Fish-ORama season. The 8-inch, 0.7-ounce bluegill was caught on Prairie Lake using a wax worm. Pictured with Tom is his father, Curtis, at left, holding his family’s Fish-O-Rama button, and Bob Stangle, right, representing Skippers Bait & Liquor Store, sponsor of the $500 fish. Curtis noted that he and his family have been coming to Chetek at least once a year for about 11 years, always staying at Oak Grove Resort. Tom’s 71-year old grandfather, Terry Nauman, of Rome, Ill., has been a longtime visitor of Chetek since he was 10. The Fish-O-Rama Contest began May 2 and ends Oct. 1.
