Explore the Arts & culture

art

Vernon County’s creative spirit runs deep. From long-held folk traditions to nationally recognized fine artists, makers here draw inspiration from the land, the people, and the quiet beauty of the Driftless Region

MURALS & BARN QUILTS

Across the county, vibrant murals reflect local history, community values, and the natural landscape we all share. In downtown Viroqua, you’ll find eight largescale murals, while Westby and Coon Valley feature playful 3D-style pieces filled with hidden “Easter eggs” waiting to be discovered. Start at Viroqua’s McIntosh Memorial Library to learn more about the downtown Viroqua mural tour.

Out on the back roads, bright barn quilts and barn art add color to the landscape. Their geometric patterns celebrate agricultural heritage and modern creativity— making a drive through Vernon County’s countryside a meaningful way to explore both art and place.

FOLK ART

Creative expression shows up everywhere here— sometimes in long-standing roadside landmarks like the Romance Chicken, other times in temporary hay bale or snow sculptures shaped by a neighbor’s imagination. Folk art thrives in both our towns and rural communities.

MUST-SEE ART GALLERIES

To see the work of local and regional artists, visit VIVA Gallery in Viroqua, an artist-owned cooperative showcasing a wide range of mediums. In Coon Valley, stop by the Central Park Gallery after grabbing a photo with the Angel Wings mural outside.

LOCAL FEATURE:

A PARK WITH A VIEW — OLD SETTLERS OVERLOOK

Perched high above the Mississippi River, Old Settlers Overlook offers 30 acres of Driftless beauty. Established in 1972, the park includes wooded trails, an old quarry, and sweeping river vistas. Locals affectionately call it “Wing Dam Park,” named for the stone quarried here to build wing dams along the river.

In the late 2010s, community members rallied to extend fall hours so families could enjoy peak foliage. Their efforts, supported by Vernon County, the Stoddard Lions Club, and the Wisconsin DOT, led to new signage, refreshed trails, and accessible public restrooms. The park is now open Memorial Day through early November— an unforgettable stop for leafpeeping, photography, or a quiet picnic with a world-class view.

Drive the Great River Road

The Wisconsin Great River Road National Scenic Byway stretches through Vernon County’s river towns, offering stunning river views, wildlife sightings, and easy access to local attractions. Along the way, stop for eagle spotting, wander small-town Main Streets, and enjoy unique eateries, parks, and trails. The route connects Stoddard, Genoa, and De Soto, making it the perfect way to explore culture, history, and natural beauty all in one day.

Gateway to the Driftless HILLSBORO

Local Feature

Vernon County is home to more round barns than any other county in Wisconsin. Built mainly between 1890 and 1930, these barns were designed for efficient dairy farming before electrification changed agricultural practices. Many of the county’s barns were designed and constructed by Algie Shivers, a local carpenter and African American settler whose work has become a unique part of the region’s architectural heritage.

The Cheyenne Valley near Hillsboro was Wisconsin’s largest rural African American settlement in the 19th century, and visitors can explore the area along scenic drives through this historic landscape, rolling farmland, and Amish Country. These drives offer the chance to see the remaining round barns while connecting with the county’s layered history.

The countryside around Hillsboro is home to a large Amish community, offering a glimpse into a quieter way of life. Known for their craftsmanship as carpenters, bakers, and farmers, farmstands and markets offer fresh produce, baked goods, and handcrafted items. Don’t miss the greenhouses in spring, a perfect spot for plants, flowers, and a memorable local stop.
