Our Chain of Lakes covers over 3,800 surface acres with more than 68 miles of shoreline. We boast what many say are the best panfish they’ve ever eaten. The lakes have thriving populations of walleye, northern pike, large & smallmouth bass, bluegills, crappies, pumpkinseeds & perch.

With our show site on Lakeview Drive completed, there is truly not a bad seat in the place! We are more ready than ever to entertain crowds at our weekly water ski shows. Our shows are one of the best FREE entertainment events in the area. If you have time on Sundays during the summer, stop over and see a show!

HISTORY OF CHETEK

Chetek was first settled in 1863 and platted on Oct. 15, 1875, on land owned by Knapp, Stout & Co. and E. M. Sexton. Chetek was never incorporated as a village but became an incorporated city in 1891. At the time, Chetek was the first and only city in the United States to pass directly from a township system to a full-fledged city. It was also the smallest incorporated city in the United States, having a population then of only 531 people.

The origin of the name “Chetek” is mired

in controversy. From a variety of sources we are given several explanations as to how the name was derived. One historian says the name “Chetek,” which Ojibway Indians called “Sheetak,” means pelican, literally little pelican. This is to distinguish it from Big Chetac located farther north. Another theory says that the name was given by Knapp, Stout & Co. lumbermen for a Chippewa Indian Chief, whose name by various writers was spelled Chetek, Shetek, Shetack, Shetuc,

BIG SIX CHAIN OF LAKES

Chetek, the City of Lakes, is located in northwestern Wisconsin on the Big Six Chain of Lakes — but how many other details of these bodies of water and the land surrounding them is well known?

Did you know that these six lakes — Chetek, Prairie, Pokegama, Moose Ear, Ten Mile and Ojaski — cover 3,800 surface acres. The smallest, Moose Ear Lake, covers 33.6 surface acres, Lake Chetek, covers just 683 surface acres, while Prairie Lake has 1,545 surface acres. Lake Chetek is the deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 22 feet.

Fish populations in these lakes include Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegill, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers.

MOOSE EAR LAKE

On the lower part of Moose Ear Creek, this lake has 33.6 surface acres with a maximum depth of just 6 feet, and has a warm water fish population. An intermittent stream from Couderay Lake and a spring feeder from a pond also supply water to the stream. A 150-acre wetland adjoining the stream near Moose Ear Lake provides habitat for muskrats and nesting puddle ducks.

CHETEK LAKE

With a maximum depth of 22 feet, Chetek Lake has a total of 683 surface acres. It is a recreational lake and is surrounded on most of its area by permanent residences, summer homes, resorts, and the City of Chetek. The city operates a public swimming beach during the summer months and a large public boat landing is located near the Southworth Municipal Airport on Lakeview Drive. Lake Chetek is also the site of the Hydroflites Water Ski Team’s shows, which are held throughout the summer from their property located adjacent to the boat landing on Lakeview Drive.

TEN MILE LAKE

This lake at the southern most point of the Chain has a depth of 10 feet and 393 surface acres. This lake is also a soft water drainage impoundment in the Chetek Lake Chain. Muskrats, nesting mallards and wood ducks use the 27 acres of lake edge wetlands.

OJASKI LAKE

Located in the Town of Chetek, Ojaski Lake (also known locally as Mud Lake) covers 567.1 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 15 feet. Pokegama Creek, which flows into Ojaski Lake from the north, provides a spawning area for northern and walleye. Located in a farming area, the lake is surrounded by upland hardwoods. white pine and cultivated farmland. About three acres of

marsh wetlands on the northeast shore provide habitat for muskrats, nesting mallards, teal and wood ducks.

POKEGAMA LAKE

With 494 surface acres and a maximum depth of 19 feet, Pokegama Lake is a very popular fishing lake. A soft water drainage lake in the Chetek Chain between Ojaski Lake and Lake Chetek, the immediate lakeshore vegetation is pine and hardwood with the exception of several marsh-edged bays. These marshes provide habitat for muskrats and puddle ducks. Keep your eyes peeled when cruising along the shorelines as deer and other wildlife come down to get a drink of water. Another sight becoming more common each year are Bald Eagles soaring above the lakes, catching fish to feed themselves and their young.

PRAIRIE LAKE

With 1,545 surface acres, Prairie Lake is the largest lake in the Chetek Lake Chain with a maximum depth of 16 feet. A soft water drainage lake, the lake level is maintained by the dam on Lake Chetek, which controls the water levels on the Chetek Chain, and the fish species consist of all those named previously. The lakeshore is predominantly upland hardwoods and pine, and three acres of marsh edge along the lake provide habitat for muskrats, nesting ducks. Coot and Canada geese also use the lake during spring and fall migratory periods. The haunting call of the loon can be heard during the early and late migration times. It is in these waters that the famous floating islands originated, moving from time to time to different locations. The lake runs from the north side of Chetek northward, almost to Cameron and Highway 8. While much of the shoreline is developed with residential homes, cabins and resorts; there is still a large portion of the lake that remains wild, offering natural settings for fishing along the banks of the lake.

Walleyes for Chetek Walleyes for Chetek had another fantastic year in 2024 as it continues efforts to rebuild the Chetek Chain of Lakes into the “Walleye Capital of Wisconsin.” The local organization raises funds annually to release extended-growth walleyes into the Chetek Chain in order to increase the walleye population throughout the fishery.

In Sept. 2022, the nonprofit organization stocked the Chetek Chain of Lakes with nearly 12,000 extended growth walleye (7–13 inches in length)—something the organization has done since 2003. Purchasing larger, juvenile walleyes increases their survival rate to roughly 80 percent. Counting the last five years of the DNR’s stocking (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023), plus Walleyes for Chetek’s additional fish (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) have been more than 230,000 walleyes put into the Chetek chain in the past 10 years.

In the 17 years of stocking—the DNR and Walleyes for Chetek alternate years that they stock the Chetek Chain with walleyes. The local organization has purchased and released more than 132,000 extended growth walleyes at a cost of approximately

$215,000. This is the 12th year that the Walleyes for Chetek officers— Tyler Florczak, Josh Akins, James Akins and Ryan Gonzales—are heading the organization after co-founders Paul Pawlisch, Larry Grabowski and Larry Stafsholt handed over the reins and responsibilities of the Walleyes for Chetek in 2013.

Walleyes supplied to stock the Chetek Chain are hatched and raised by Gollon Bait & Fish Farm, of Dodgeville. The cost is $2 per fish, and all of the funds raised through donations and the sale of raffle tickets annually go toward the purchase of walleye.

“Our fishery continues to thrive from the stocking efforts. Open water anglers and ice fishing anglers are reporting many more and larger walleyes in the last 6–8 years, and they are growing at an incredible rate. That proves that a fishery can be improved when the community gets involved,” Walleyes for Chetek officer Josh Akins stated. “We have received an unbelievable amount of support for our Walleyes for Chetek raffle giveaway on Labor Day weekend each year. We appreciate all of the donations and support we receive each year from Gilligans, the Chetek Resort Owners Association, Chetek Lakes Protection Association, along with all

of the local businesses, organizations and individuals who donate or sponsor to make the stocking possible.”

Besides stocking fish into the the lakes, Walleyes for Chetek has taken on some other lake projects that will enhance Chetek’s fishery for years to come, including the installation of fish cribs at various locations of the Chetek Chain in fall 2023 and 2024.

The local organization is also working with the CLPA this winter to create more fish habitat along shorelines with a project called Fish Sticks. Interested lakeshore property owners can have Fish Sticks installed on their shorelines with these projects funded by the two organizations.

To garner funding for stocking walleyes and upcoming projects, the organization will once again hold a Labor Day Weekend raffle with a grand prize of $2,000 as well as various other prizes, raffles, giveaways, silent auction items and more. Tickets are available at local sports shops, resorts, restaurants/bars and other retailers. Walleyes for Chetek apparel is also sold in town at Gilligans, Off R’ Rockers and Red’s Grill & Bar. This year’s Walleyes for Chetek raffle event will again take place at Gilligans in Chetek on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.

Anyone willing to donate cash or items to be used as prizes for the August raffle can mail donations to:

PROTEK CHETEKLAKES

WE LOVE OUR LAKES!

We are so fortunate to be part of the Chetek Chain of Lakes. Whether you’re boating to a restaurant, participating in a fishing tournament, watching the Hydroflites ski team, swimming, or sight-seeing natural habitat, there are so many ways to enjoy our lakes. To assure we get to enjoy and pass on this local treasure to future generations, the Chetek Lakes Protection Association (CLPA) was formed in 1995. The CLPA’s mission is to preserve and protect the Chetek Chain of Lakes for today’s

enjoyment and our future generations. We are able to fulfill this mission with the tireless support of volunteers, community fundraisers, member dues and donations from residents, visitors, and local businesses. Current CLPA projects include: 1) Water sample/monitoring, 2) Operate EcoHarvestor to remove excess weeds and algae from back bays and channels, 3) FishStick installations to promote fish habitat, 4) Create and circulate educational boat landing signs, brochures, and other publications, 5) Clean Boat Clean Waters Program to prevent invasive species, and 6) the Healthy Lakes Program to advance infiltration, buffer strips, and rain gardens to stop unwanted materials

from entering the lake.

Four Ways Everyone Can Help Protect Our Lakes:

1. Don’t let ash from a lakeside fire pit or unwanted grass/leaves enter the lake. The ashes, grass, and leaves feed unwanted Algae!

2. Inspect boats and trailers after use in the lakes to prevent the spread of non-native species.

3. Maintain vegetation along shorelines to prevent excess fertilizer and other nutrients entering the lake.

4. Obey no-wake zones within 100 feet of shoreline to prevent erosion. Reduce boat motor speeds in shallow areas to prevent churning up sediment along the lake bottom.

If you enjoy the lakes as a resident or a visitor, we can always use additional support through monetary donations or your time/talent. Information to become a member or to donate is available by phone, email, website…and you can “like” the Chetek Lakes Protection Association on Facebook!

CLPA Skimmer

CLPA Weed Skimming Program

The Chetek Lakes Protection Association (CLPA) has operated a weed and algae skimming operation on the Chetek Chain of Lakes since 2016. Each spring a permit is secured from the Wisconsin DNR specifying the locations and species of plants expected to remove. Key to the process is an Eco-Harvester machine which pulls weeds out by the roots and loads them into a hopper. The harvested weeds are off-loaded to a dump trailer and transported to a compost site where they eventually become part of a fertile planting mix. Details of harvested

volumes, locations and plant species are documented in a report filed with the Wisconsin DNR annually. All expenses associated with the initial purchase, operation and maintenance of the equipment are funded through community donations and membership dues. Manpower to manage, operate and maintain the equipment is provided by local volunteers. No outside State or County funding is used for any aspect of the program.

Since 2016, 3,2524 cubic yards of plant material has been removed from the Chetek Chain. That’s enough to fill over

270 dump trucks! While weather and other variables play a role in the amount of lake weeds and algae growth each year, we believe the tons of material we’ve removed is making a difference in helping property owners and visitors enjoy our water resource. This is evidenced by the positive comments and donations we receive. The Lake Association takes pride in our weed management program as well as the many other initiatives we manage to improve our lakes and shorelines for today and for future generations. Learn more about what we do at www.cheteklakespa.org.

DAVID R. OBEY ICE AGE INTERPRETIVE CENTER CHIPPEWA Moraine

from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call ahead before visiting on a holiday as some are designated as closed days.

The ninth and newest unit of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scientific Reserve is Chippewa Moraine State Recreation area, which encompasses over 4,000 acres of unique and interesting glacial formations. Dotted throughout the property are numerous small glacial kettle lakes, beaver meadows and tranquil ponds. Fish populations thrive in some of these water bodies, but others are home only to a wide variety of frogs, reptiles, turtles and unseen, secretive pond life creatures.

The Ice Age National Trail (which begins at Interstate State Park in St. Croix Falls and ends at Potawatomi State Park in Door County) will eventually provide the hiker with over 1,200 miles of interesting glacial terrain. At Chippewa Moraine, 13 miles of trails offer an assortment of hiking choices— including three popular loop trails. For the more ambitious, a walk to the easternmost end of this segment culminates at Brunet Island State Park in Cornell. Trails are non-motorized, and bicycles and horses are not allowed. Well-behaved dogs

are encouraged to visit with their owners (treats upon request at the interpretive center office). Winter time visitors are encouraged to borrow a pair of our snowshoes and enjoy some quiet time enjoying the beauty of our winter paradise. Over 60 pairs of snowshoes are available and will fit all ages, including the smallest of children. No rental fees are charged, but donations are appreciated. Remote campsites are available on a first-comefirst-served basis and have a fee of $16 per night. Inside the visitor center are glacial, cultural and natural history displays. On rainy days, bored children will enjoy family-based nature films. Other popular films explain the glacial process, early logging and river driving. Staff naturalists encourage a hands-on approach and will gladly present a snake or turtle for children to hold. Nets are available for grasshopper catching and critter feeding. Indoor scavenger hunts (10 different editions) are extremely popular with visiting children, offering up a choice of a prize after being ‘quizzed’ by a patient naturalist.

MUSKY TOURNAMENT

The Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls chapter of Muskies Inc. would like to inform you of our Annual Musky Tournament which is held midSeptember every year. The tournament is attended by 200-250 anglers and is held on navigable waters in Rusk, Barron, Chippewa, Eau Claire, and Dunn Counties. Our goal is to promote the sport of musky fishing with an emphasis on a variety of prizes being awarded from various tournament sponsors. In 2024 we had a total of 218 anglers register for the event. We had an abnormally warm September and some

very interesting weather for this year’s tournament. However, our anglers were able to capitalize on some bite windows for a total of 76 muskies over 34″ caught during the event. Largest fish (46.75″) and 1st place went out to Tom Albrecht. 2nd Place Nick Brenner and 3rd Place Brad Schultz. All contestants to catch a musky will receive a prize from the prize table. Door prizes are also given to those in attendance to the Sunday banquet held in Holcombe, WI. Muskies Inc is a national “Not for profit” organization that promotes Youth, Fisheries, and Research and

this tournament is the chapters main fund raising activity. All proceeds from the event are used in the west central Wisconsin area to support environmental education, youth camp sponsorship, outings for Veterans, fish stocking, habitat enhancement, restoration projects, water quality preservation, and much more. We work in conjunction with area lake associations, the Rod and Gun Club, and various other restoration and preservation groups.

CITY OF CHETEK DOG PARK

The City of Chetek Dog Park opened in August 2016 and is located at 401 City Park Drive. The park is three acres where your dog is free to run and play without a leash all year ‘round. There are open grassy and tree-shaded areas to enjoy the freedom. The park is divided into two sections: one section for small dogs only and the other section for all size dogs. Future improvements planned are walking trails, benches and a pavilion.

CWHS graduates are seeing more and more post-secondary oppportunities, and it is because of this that your donation is needed now, more than ever. We see a growing number of graduates going to 4-year and 2-year colleges, as well as many who attend technical schools. In order to afford these opportunities, many rely on financial aid, which results in debt often difficult to repay. We encourage all students to apply for any and all scholarships, which include all of those offered through the CWSF. At no point should a graduate be discouraged about seeking future education simply because of a lack of funds. Your donation helps to secure the future of our CWHS graduates. The mission of the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Scholarship Foundation, Inc. is to promote a better society through financial help for further education.

SOUTHWORTH Municipal Airport

The Chetek Southworth Municipal Airport is located one mile east of downtown Chetek on Lakeview Drive. The land for the airport was originally donated by Fred Southworth, a prominent businessman in Chetek’s earlier days, and was dedicated in 1939.

The airport has grown from a single grass strip, now to a 3,401 ft. x 60 ft. asphalt runway with two GPS approaches, plus a 1,490 ft. x 120 ft. turf cross strip. Plus, 24-hour, self-serve 100LL fuel is available with attractive pricing. There is free ramp parking and tiedown area for planes. The Beuthling Terminal building houses some nice amenities for pilots. A courtesy van and bicycles are also available for transient pilots and passengers.

FISH-O- RAMA

First $500 tagged fish of 2024 caught

First and second $500 tagged fish of the 2024 Fish-O-Rama contest were caught the week of June 12th. Chippewa Falls resident Jeff Madson (second from left) claimed the first big money fish of the year when he caught a 6.5-inch bluegill while fly fishing on Ojaski Lake on May 31. Madson is pictured with David Louis, of DR Louis Construction who was the fish sponsor. Pictured at right is 18-yearold Landen Viergutz (far left), of Medford, who landed a quick pay day when he reeled in a 9.5-inch bluegill while fishing Prairie Lake with a wax worm. The big bluegill turned out to be worth $500 and is the second tagged fish Viergutz has caught—his first was three years ago and was a $100 tagged fish. Viergutz noted that his family has been visiting Chetek for 20 years. The fish was sponsored by Red’s Grill & Bar with owner Josh Heidemann (far right) present to award the $500 check to Viergutz.

Appeared in the Chetek Alert, June 12, 2024, issue.
