Welcome to WISconsin Dells One of the oldest sites to appear on early Midwest maps is the “Dalles” of the Wisconsin River. It was identified as a convenient reference point by French explorers in the 1700s. The name stuck after the French explorers left Wisconsin, but the spelling and pronunciation was anglicized as the “Dells.” When the railroad arrived in 1857, some big wigs decided to honor the railroad’s president, and the town was renamed Kilbourn City – but locals and visitors alike never stopped referring to the area as the Dells. So, in 1931, Kilbourn City officially changed its name to Wisconsin Dells.
the water of the Lower Dells and Lake Delton. Today, almost 75 years later, you’ll see dozens of Ducks filled with smiling faces of all ages. Bare Footin’ No history of the Dells would be complete without giving mad props to Tommy Bartlett and the "Tommy Bartlett Water Ski & Jumping Boat Thrill Show"as it was originally called back in 1953. Bartlett is often credited with popularizing waterskiing as a relatively unknown summertime hobby into a worldwide major sport.
The wild, romantic scenery and the magnificent Cambrian sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River may have been the reason early tourists first visited, but that was only the beginning.
But importantly, his show filled with colorful costumes, dancing water, jumping boats, Polynesian dancers, bare-foot skiers, ski jumping, and skydivers is arguably the single biggest influence in establishing the Dells and Lake Delton area as the tourist mecca it is today.
If it Looks Like a Duck… In 1946, Mel Flath and Bob Unger brought a single ‘land and water’ vehicle called a Duck to Wisconsin Dells to offer scenic tours. The tours started on land and traveled through the woods and up and down hills until they splashed into
Just Add Water In 1978, Family Land (now Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park) introduced the beginning of waterparks in Wisconsin Dells. Noah’s Ark Waterpark followed and built the Dells’ first waterslide attraction in 1980.
In 1994, Stan Anderson, the resourceful owner of the Polynesian Resort Hotel, had the brilliant idea to put a roof over his already popular water attraction. In an instant, he turned a way-too-short summertime activity into yearround fun with an indoor waterpark that inspired others to follow suit. In fact, it didn’t take long for the Dells to become known as “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®” All told, there's more than 16 million gallons of cool, refreshing, waterpark fun! Before the slides, whirlpools, and raging waters, however, there was the river. The Wisconsin River. According to Native American legend it was a great serpent, wriggling down from the north that formed the bed of the Wisconsin River. Crawling over the forests and the fields, his huge body wore an immense groove in the land and the water rushed in behind him. When he came to the sandstone ridge where the Dells begins, he thrust his great head into a crevice between the rocks and pushed them aside to form a narrow, winding passage.
Events and Festivals
Automotion is one of the largest automotive shows in Wisconsin! Over 1,000 car collectors and enthusiasts from across the United States gather in the Dells to show off their beautifully restored classics, all pre-dating 1989! This family-friendly event offers live music and food, a car parade, car corral, swap meet and awards presentation. Get your camera ready and take in the sights and sounds of this free spectator event!

September 13-15, 2019 Downtown Dells A three-day celebration of the autumn season, Wo-Zha-Wa (“fun time” in the Ho-Chunk language) Fall Festival is filled with free family activities including: an arts and crafts fair, antique flea market, Maxwell Street Days, live entertainment and a 100-unit parade. Visitors are also invited to participate in a street carnival with refreshment concessions and the Wo-Zha-Wa Run. All activities take place throughout downtown Wisconsin Dells and Bowman Park.
Gather your friends and join us in downtown Wisconsin Dells for a music event like no other! This block party features live music from some of the most jam-worthy bands in the modern music industry. That may be legend, but the true story is just as exciting. When a great glacial lake of Wisconsin started to break free from its large ice dam, the waters rushed free in a catastrophic flood and carved out the great rock formations and left behind the beautiful and unspoiled Wisconsin River we so thoroughly enjoy today. Land Ahoy It’s clear that the Dells offers plenty to do near the water, on the water, or in the water, but there’s even more to do for those of us who prefer something a little less wet. HOTEL HACKS We’ve compiled a list “hotel hacks” to help you enjoy your stay, and get a good night’s sleep while you’re away from home.

Make your reservation as early as you can. The Dells is a busy destination. There’s a reason we say the early bird catches the worm. Know what you want. When making your reservation, be sure that your hotel has all the amenities you’re looking for to avoid any surprises later. You might want to avoid rooms facing a pool or waterpark. While they’re pretty cool to look at, they can be noisy sometimes late into the night. Consider bringing your pillow from home if you have neck or back pain.
Bring earplugs. They’re cheap, easy to use, and incredibly effective at muffling unwanted noise.

Similarly, bring a sleeping mask. It does for your eyes what earplugs do for your ears – and can be especially helpful if your room doesn’t have room-darkening shades.
This one is obvious, but many people forget - hang the “do not disturb” sign on the doorknob – especially if you’re hoping to sleep in. Without it, you risk a knock on the door from an over-zealous housekeeper as early as 7:00 or 8:00 am!

Use the bathroom light as a nightlight. In unfamiliar settings, you’ll be glad you did. And so will your little toe!
Try a polite rap on the wall if your neighbor is too loud. If you’re uncomfortable with that, call the front desk and ask for assistance. Being out of your element can be stressful. Take some deep, slow breaths before bed to help you relax and unwind.
Sounds old fashioned, but if you absolutely, positively need to get up at a certain time, use the hotel’s wake up service as a backup to your alarm clock or phone.
Adjust the room temperature to your comfort level – remember, you’re on vacation.
In the end, with a little advanced planning, you’re sure to sleep like a baby. Nighty night. Sweet dreams.

Bennett Studio, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a historical museum showcasing the life and times of this eponymous photographer.
