Jack Storms is not the typical self-made entrepreneur. He’s an artistic pioneer who saw the potential of sculpting cold glass into fantastic prisms of light with organic shapes. Graduating from Plymouth College in rural New Hampshire at age 30, Storms used his instincts to break into the art world. “My big precursor to being an artist was having descended from a family of craftsmen, stonemasons and a master wood-turner.” He landed an internship with a local sculptor and immediately fell in love with the medium of cold glass. “I was fascinated by the whole process. After about six months, I was running the entire studio... and [within a year], I decided to go off on my own because I wanted to take this medium where nobody else had an interest in going.“ Storms’ artistic vision is very personal and, at times, almost obsessive: “I’m always thinking about this stuff. I’m ‘on’ all the time. I’m inspired by all kinds of things. I dream about shapes.” “The final product is very polished and meticulous, but it’s a dirty, mechanized process. It looks like you’re working with concrete at times.A lot of tile saws, a lot of grinding machines.” The production phase of cold glass sculpting is not glamorous, but Storms is a craftsman in the truest sense. He works patiently within a very repetitive process. “[Preparing] a single piece of glass takes about a day-and-a-half to two days. I can work on several different pieces within the same day, but it still takes 10 - 12 weeks to complete a piece.

Recently winning the People’s Choice Award® for his creation, Bella Vino, Jack Storms has made great strides to transform the medium of cold glass into something new. It’s an incredible challenge due to the laws of geometry. “Everything has to be perpendicular, at a right angle, or square. Since there’s no such thing in nature as a straight line, what I try to do is design my pieces so they look organic. So people get the sense that they are created and not manufactured. I can create wine bottles and vases and eggs and orbs.Things no one else in cold glass has ever done. This is the direction I always envisioned my work taking me. So when this piece got the People’s Choice Award, it was very gratifying to me because I knew I was on the right track.” Storms’ work can be seen at www.jackstorms.com. Another venue highlighting the wine bottle exhibit is the Great Wine Escape Weekend put on by the Monterrey Vintner’s Association.
