Connections
This year we are seeing the power of the Adirondacks in a new light. Like many of you, we are experiencing firsthand the importance of places that let us connect with nature and with each other. This annual report acknowledges the people who have been essential over the past year to helping conserve the lands, waters and community spaces that enrich our lives. People are seeking solace from the coronavirus in the outdoors. The Adirondack Park—larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Grand Canyon national parks combined—grows ever more vital in a changing climate, inspiring new and diverse advocates for conservation. PURPOSE AND PLACE Individual initiative plays a more important role in Adirondack conservation than ever, and we are taking heart in your response.

T
his has certainly been a year of dramatic change. Who could have imagined that a pandemic would force us all to radically alter the ways in which we interact? Yet here we are. Like so many other organizations, the Adirondack Land Trust has had to adjust. It has been a learning curve, but our purpose has not changed: protecting the forests, farms, waters and special places that give us the opportunity to connect with nature. On a personal level, the pandemic’s tendency to keep us isolated only increased my appreciation of how protected lands and waters keep us connected to each other. I was fortunate to be able to share more time than ever on the trail and in canoes with friends and family. Breathing in the beauty of nature, I felt refreshed and restored.

The Adirondack Land Trust staff and board have also been making a special effort to connect with colleagues and friends. We have been revisiting some of the 90 places spanning 26,632 acres that supporters helped us conserve over the past 36 years. We have moved our events and gatherings online, allowing us to engage with supporters while also expanding our reach to new friends. We know that you share our heightened sense of appreciation for nature’s healing power at a time when our world is faced with so many challenges. There is much work to be done and our commitment is unwavering, despite the financial implications of the pandemic. Reductions in state and foundation funding mean that private individuals play a more important role in our work than ever before, and we take heart in your generous response. Thank you for all that you do for the Adirondacks.

The Year in Conservation:
Highlights The Adirondack Land Trust is working at full strength to conserve our region’s vital natural safety net. Over the past year, generous supporters helped us: • Purchase 5 acres, including 570 feet of wild shoreline, on Upper Saranac Lake near Indian Carry along the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. • Sign a contract to purchase the last unprotected shoreline on Thirteenth Lake (below), the largest water body in the 114,010-acre Siamese Ponds Wilderness. • Sign a contract to purchase a 60-acre inholding in the 91,854-acre Vanderwhacker Wild Forest.

• Begin work on pollinator habitat at our Glenview Preserve, in the town of Harrietstown, and collaborate with neighbors on a long-term plan for the preserve (above). • Complete a three-year revamp of our Coon Mountain Preserve, in Westport, allowing more people to enjoy the trails with less impact. • Earn a New York State grant to work with Essex County partners to identify farms in transition and help keep them in agriculture.
IN Progress: We are currently working with private landowners, communities and other partners on conservation of 12,838 acres at 28 sites.

The unusual story of how the Untermyer family protected a special place is taking on new relevance.

“Shall be forever kept as wild” are sacred words in the Adirondack Park. In Article XIV of New York State’s Constitution, they give our Forest Preserve the strongest protection of any public lands in the world.

What many people don’t know is that private land can also be Forever Wild. The Untermyer family is stewarding 190 acres surrounding Streeter Pond, near Brant Lake, in a way that allows nature to evolve without logging, building or other human interference.
Bob helped Frank craft the Adirondack Land Trust’s first conservation easement, a voluntary legal agreement with a landowner to protect designated conservation values. Unlike most easements, the paper Frank signed erased all rights to change the land in any way.
Their Adirondack story begins with Samuel Untermyer, a prominent lawyer and founder of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League. In the 1890s, Samuel was given 1,200 acres near Brant Lake by D. J. Yuengling (a founder of the beer company who briefly had a hotel and bottling operation in Riparius) in lieu of payment for a legal service. Samuel, who died in 1940, never saw the land. But one of his sons built a summer retreat there, and his descendants continue to love the area today.
Today there is renewed interest in Forever Wild easements, which, unlike state Forest Preserve, can limit public access—Streeter Pond is not open for visiting. The Northeast Wilderness Trust is now working with the Adirondack Land Trust on a Forever Wild easement that would permit low-impact recreation at its 2,434-acre Eagle Mountain Preserve, in the Champlain Valley. In 1985, one of Samuel’s grandsons, Frank, purchased 85 acres that were for sale on a mountainside above Brant Lake. He donated that land to the Forest Preserve, and he sought similar protection for Streeter Pond. Frank turned to Bob Kafin, the go-to environmental attorney in the North Country at the time. Bob recalls Frank as generous and ahead of his time—conservation easements were still a new legal tool. If you’ve gone on a hike in the Adirondacks over the past few years, you may have noticed: You’re not alone. Trails are more popular than ever. In fact, some routes are overcrowded. That’s why Jessica Henshaw Grant, our 2020 Intern for the Future of the Adirondacks, looked at each of 22 sites we’ve protected that offer public access, to evaluate how they balance conservation, recreation and other public values of land trust work. These seven spots ranked as not just exceptionally visit-worthy, but also capable of sustaining recreational use.

Black River Environmental Improvement Ass’n: This privately owned conservation easement on part of a 50-kilometer network of ski, snowshoe, biking and hiking trails is available for free public use.
Upper Saranac Lake shoreline: After helping New York State add two pieces of wild shoreline to Forest Preserve on the southern end of the lake, we are working on a third project, not yet complete.
Lows Lake shoreline: 995 acres added to the Forest Preserve in the Five Ponds Wilderness in 2006, protecting 4.5 miles of wild shoreline with an adjacent conservation easement.
Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain: We bought 200 acres here in 2006, allowing NYSDEC to build a second, more gradual trail to the summit of this popular peak.
Forked Lake shoreline: 377 acres added to the Forest Preserve in 1995 to protect 1.5 miles of wild shoreline on either side of the canoe carry from Raquette to Forked Lake.
Coon Mountain Preserve: Our flagship preserve (est. 1991) offers two trails to explore, both suitable for young children and blooming with wildflowers in early spring.
Indian Canoe Carry: 36 acres added to the Forest Preserve in 1989. Allows a safe portage between the Raquette and Saranac river systems in an area with a history of Indigenous settlement.

ver three decades, renowned conservationists Barbara Glaser and Clarence Petty (1905–2009) teamed up to champion paid internship opportunities for young people at the Adirondack Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and the Adirondack Council.

In 2020, Clarence’s son Ed joined with Barbara to initiate a third internship, the Adirondack Land Trust Internship for the Future of the Adirondacks. (Ed didn’t want any recognition—he insists he is only paying forward his father’s legacy—but this wouldn’t have been possible without him.)

Meet our Newest Board Member Heidi Kretser is a conservation social scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Global Conservation Program. Heidi incorporates tools and perspectives from the social sciences into conservation practice to improve the conservation of wildlife and wildlands. She is widely published and her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio and a variety of regional media. Heidi serves as an adjunct associate professor at Cornell University’s Department of Natural Resources and is affiliated with the Cornell Center for Conservation Social Sciences. She completed her Ph.D. in Natural Resource Policy and Management at Cornell and her Master’s of Environmental Studies at the Yale School of Forestry. Heidi grew up in Vermontville and lives in Saranac Lake with her husband, Andy Keal, and their two fifth-generation-Adirondack children. In our spring 2020 newsletter we were delighted to introduce our other new board members of the past year: Vinny McClelland, Holly Rippon-Butler and Anne C. Stuzin.
