Volunteers of the Year: Rich and Debby Harrison

Rich and Debby Harrison

(Enterprise photo — Aaron Cerbone)

From masks to races, the Harrisons put in time to keep their community together By AARON CERBONE Staff Writer The Enterprise’s volunteer of the year this year is actually two volunteers — Debby and Rich Harrison of Rainbow Lake. “You can’t have one without the other,” Janice Fitzgerald wrote in her letter nominating the couple for the distinction. “They are a team who put service above self.” The couple are avid organizers of ski and canoe races, generous friends always willing to lend a hand, and builders — whether that is helping a neighbor renovate a home or crafting thousands of masks during the coronavirus pandemic. The Harrisons are not on many committees. They just serve the needs they see in their daily life. They’re well connected with many people and communities in the area, so they are constantly hearing about needs. Carol Lamb and John Brown, who live down the street from the Harrisons, said their friends help those who might not know who else to reach out to. The Harrisons have helped neighbors renovate

their homes, helped friends care for family members who were battling cancer and delivered food to those in need. Lamb said she was “over the moon” about the nomination. She said the Harrisons are quiet about things they do. “Without fanfare, Rich and Deb Harrison show up and step up to help where needed,” Fitzgerald wrote. Debby and Rich are modest about their contributions to the community. “We have a lot of time to spend,” Rich said. They’re retired, their houses are built, and he said time running food giveaways, organizing races and helping friends is better spent than watching television. “I never put in that much thought about it,” Debby said. “It’s not a conscious thing. ... It just is.” “Everyone does something,” she added. “We enjoy it,” Rich said. Debby is a Saranac Lake native. Rich moved from New Jersey to attend Paul (Continued on Page 6)

Smith’s College in 1971 — mostly so he could ski. They married in 1976 and after a few years living in New York City, moved back here to do more of what they love. She worked for the Olympic Committee. He was a “jack of all trades” at Whiteface. But that job didn’t pay enough for them to raise a family on, so he got into corrections. He worked at numerous facilities in the North Country — Franklin, Adirondack, Gabriels — and Orleans Correctional in western New York. Rich would work two sets of back-toback shifts with a short break in-between and make the six-hour drive back home. If the snow was too thick to drive, he’d cuddle with his beagle Randy and take nap in his back seat on the roadside.

“Deb takes a lead role behind the scenes keeping the Lawn Chair Ladies organized,” Fitzgerald wrote. She keeps them polished and prepared for their routine, a job Lamb likened to herding cats. “We’re all type A women,” Lamb said. “We’re not easy to herd.” She said Debby handles the group’s communications, record-keeping and accounting. On their way to an interview with the Enterprise on Feb. 22, Debby met with a Lawn Chair Lady to give her some extra decorations ahead of their second 2022 performance for a boy who was getting a Make-AWish parade through town later in the week. Debby’s been involved with the Ladies for 20something years, nearly since the group’s inception. Rich said he’s been vacuuming glitter out of the rug for weeks and there’s still pink feathers frozen in the ice on their porch.

Lamb said Debby helps organize class reunions for graduates of the former St. Pius X High School. They were in the same graduating class, where they met and became friends in 1967. The Harrisons are godparents to her son. Debby was the matron of honor at her wedding and Rich took wedding photos. They volunteered with food giveaways during the pandemic, supplying food to families in Vermontville and Saranac Lake. Rich said there was a big need. Some people were out of jobs. He remembered one day, there were dozens of leftover milk jugs, so they set up a table in Saranac Lake and handed them out to people driving past. That was fun, he said. The two donate gifts to the Holiday Helpers every year, toys to be given to children in the area who might otherwise not receive much for Christmas. They always try to find unusual stuff, like kayaks, and focus their gifts on the older children, who often don’t get as much. They’ve already started gathering gifts for next year. The Harrisons say they do what they do to keep the events that bring their North County “families” together going. They have their “canoe family” their “ski family” and numerous other “families” they support through their volunteering.

How to find the right volunteering opportunity

By Metro Creative Volunteering is a great way to strengthen communities and support good causes. Adults looking to volunteer for the first time may be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of opportunities to lend a hand. Finding the right volunteering opportunity requires careful consideration of a host of factors, including some that people new to volunteering may be unaware of. ¯ Time: One way to narrow down your volunteering opportunities is to consider how much time you have to give back. If your schedule is often hectic, it may be hard to honor a commitment to weekly volunteering. In such instances, signing up for a weekend park cleanup once per month or another opportunity that requires a similar commitment of time might make the most sense. Retirees, adults working parttime or people whose employers allow flex hours might be more suited to time-consuming commitments like coaching youth sports or delivering meals to the elderly. ¯ Interests: Volunteering and working can be similar, but they’re also different. And the main difference may be related to the motivation to keep coming back. Many people may continue to work

at jobs they don’t like because those jobs pay for their homes, cars, etc. But if volunteers don’t like their volunteer work, then they can simply walk away without any financial fallout. Adults committed to giving back to their communities should consider their own interests when looking for volunteering opportunities. A passion for sports might inspire some to coach local youths. Men and women of faith may feel compelled to volunteer at their house of worship. An opportunity that incorporates existing interests and benefits the local community is a successful formula for many long-time volunteers. ¯ Safety: Safety should always be a consideration when looking for a volunteering opportunity. It’s important that prospective volunteers familiarize themselves with a charitable organization’s safety protocols prior to signing up as a volunteer. Many organizations have gone to great lengths to protect their volunteers and the people they’re trying to help, so don’t be afraid to inquire about protocols before signing up. No two volunteers are the same. When looking for volunteer opportunities, adults must give ample consideration to how volunteering fits into their lifestyles and how each opportunity aligns with their interests and concerns.

6-year-old Liam Lawless is the next generation of Ice Palace volunteers

By AARON CERBONE Staff Writer SARANAC LAKE — Liam Lawless gets a rush out of slapping slush. Lawless, 6, was possibly the youngest member of the Ice Palace Workers Local 101 this year. On Jan. 23, after his birthday earlier that week and after months of hounding his dad, Ken, to join the volunteers, he was finally inducted into the IPW Local 101 team. He had a small voice and a big smile as he excitedly got his mittens wet and slapped the slush into the cracks in the Palace wall to seal them in place. “I love slapping,” Liam said as he patted slush into place. “Boom!” He said his hands never got cold.

“A long, long, long time, I wanted to work on the Ice Palace,” Liam said after Carnival. “He was after me for weeks,” Ken said. “I loved it. The next generation coming up, if we can get these young guys involved, we can keep the tradition going.” During Ice Palace construction this year, Winter Carnival Committee Chair Jeff Branch told the Enterprise his biggest fear is that one year, the volunteer effort to build the Ice Palace will lose momentum. He was encouraged to see a large group working this year, and especially delighted by Liam’s excitement to get to Liam Lawless, 6, works on the work. At the Coronation ceremony Ice Palace in January. kicking off this year’s events, Branch recognized Liam’s enthusiastic volunteer spirit by giving him the First Button of Carnival. Branch started this tradition in 2020 — he gave the first button of that year to Julia Walkow, who proposed the Myths and Legends theme for that year’s Carnival. Branch said he and his family love the movie “The Polar Express.” In the movie, Santa Claus gives out “the first gift of Christmas” to someone who shows special Christmas spirit. Branch liked this idea and wanted to do something similar for Carnival. When the shipment of Carnival buttons comes in, the first one is removed and kept in an envelope. “I always keep an eye out for someone who really just loves Carnival,” Branch said. He saw Liam working on the Ice Palace and was touched. “He was just full of joy,” Branch said. “His eyes were

sparkling. ... He loves to slap that slush on the wall.” Liam now keeps the button in his bedroom. Branch said he knows Liam is a future member of IPW Local 101. The skills to use the Palacemaking tools — like the ice saw, hand saws as tall as Liam, ice tongs and die grinders — have been passed down through the generations. Liam also got to help drive a tractor carrying the 600-pound ice blocks, but he’s sure he could

lift the blocks himself. “All six-year-olds are pretty ambitious,” Ken said with a laugh. Liam is ambitious because he’s given opportunities to learn new skills. He’s driven four-wheelers, tractors and excavators before. “He’s just got bigger Tonka toys,” Ken said. Though Liam was only able to be an Ice Palace volunteer for one day, he’s caught the bug and is already asking when construction starts again. He’s excited to get back to work next year.

Volunteers keep Keene and Keene Valley joint library open for study

By MARTHA ALLEN Contributing Writer KEENE VALLEY — Keene’s two libraries, traditionally separate entities, have been operating as one since the beginning of this past November. Keene Public Library Director Aaron Miller, library staff, as well as the computer system and part of the book collection, have moved temporarily to the Keene Valley Library. The Keene Public Library has sustained damage from floods since its 1904 construction on the bank of the Ausable River, including the ravages of Tropical Storm Irene, Miller said. Structural problems that necessitated the move to Keene Valley involve the library’s roof, walls, floor and foundation. The Keene staff operates the library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the Keene Valley staff operates the library on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The combination appears seamless, the

two libraries cooperating admirably as roommates. According to Keene Valley Library Director Karen Glass, library volunteers and library employees are working together in the same spirit of unity. Keene Valley Library employees, as well as volunteers, boast T-shirts proudly emblazoned with the words “Library Lady,” supplied by Glass, who explains that all are valued for who they are, what they bring as individuals — support, help, laughter. “We all work together as a team, one group. We don’t divide between volunteers and library ladies,” she said. On a typical Tuesday morning, said Elizabeth Valovic, who humorously referred to herself as a Keene Valley Library employee in training, Keene Central School first-graders “just light up” when they see volunteer Sandy Burke. “That’s because I have grandchildren about their age,” Burke said, smiling. The children visit the library for story hour and to take out books, and look forward to meeting up with Burke, who knows their names and interacts with them. There is always something to do, according to Burke: “Small projects, big projects, whatever Karen needs done. Some days I’ve finished a project and (Continued on Page 19)

By Metro Creative Storms, natural disasters and other emergency situations are unpredictable. Planning for the unpredictable is no small task, but emergency response professionals and public health agencies emphasize the importance of having a plan in place should disaster strike. The National Centers for Environmental Information reported there were a record 22 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters across the United States in 2020. That shattered the previous annual record and led to $95 billion in damages, marking a bookend to a five-year period between 2016 and 2020 that saw the total cost of a billiondollar disasters exceed $600 billion. Such figures illustrate that while the disasters themselves may be unpredictable, it’s not hard to conclude that they’re going to come and they’re going to be costly. When planning for disasters, families are urged to consider the specific needs of each person in their household. Ready.gov, a disaster preparedness public service campaign sponsored by the U.S. government, urges families to keep the following factors in mind as they prepare disaster response plans for their households. ¯ Ages of members within your household: The ages of individuals within the household merit consideration. Young children or seniors may not be able to navigate the household in emergency situations, and it may take longer for heads of household to get everyone out if some people need assistance. Emergency plans can be altered as children grow older and can take on more responsibility. ¯ Responsibilities for assisting others: Assign

older children and adults specific responsibilities if anyone in the household will require assistance. For example, adolescents can help a live-in grandparent get out of the house. ¯ Locations frequented: Defining the locations household members frequent can make it easier to find everyone in the case of emergency. ¯ Medical needs: Document each individual’s medical needs, including their prescriptions and any equipment they need. ¯ Disabilities: Include individual’s disabilitiesrelated needs or access and functional needs, including devices and equipment. ¯ Languages spoken: This information can help emergency response personnel communicate with anyone who does not speak the native tongue. ¯ Cultural and religious considerations: Document individuals’ cultural and religious considerations so anyone trying to help them can do so while respecting their beliefs. ¯ Pets or service animals: Emergency assistance shelters admit only service animals, so anyone traveling with animals will need to provide proof that the animal is recognized as a service animal. Families should plan ahead and arrange for housing for pets in the case they have to evacuate their homes.

Individual needs should inform emergency plans

Karen graciously says “Don’t go home! Don’t go home!” As she speaks, another volunteer, Mary Michelfelder, comes through with a small child on the way to the children’s room. “I’m a volunteer, but I’m not volunteering today,” she says. “Today I’m here with Xyla, my granddaughter.” Nancy McArthur has recently completed a major year-long volunteer project: organizing the maps in the newly refinished Alpine Room. Keene Valley Library, completed in 1896, included the valued John T. Loomis collection of Adirondack Books, the Pickard collection of fishing books and an Alpine collection. While “the Marcy Quadrangle maps are the most popular by far, relevant, because everybody’s excit-

ed about going in and climbing the summits,” McArthur says, the collection, which numbers about 450 maps, is not restricted to mountaineering. The oldest is a 1774 French map of Lake Champlain. There are United States Defense Department maps, maps of Tibet. Some are very old and fragile, pre-World War I; some have clearly been used, folded and creased as if they had been pocketed and marked up by some previous owner. “Since Verplank Colden, maps have changed!” McArthur said, referring to the Adirondack wilderness explorer, 1847-1920. The map collection was originally funded by John Case, 1892-1983, a founder of the Adirondack Mountain Club. During WWII, Case was an organizer of the 10th Mountain Division, which many American climbers and skiers made an elite force. McArthur said that she likes to volunteer, and it’s good to have work that she can take time off from when her children and grandchildren need her.
