Finocan is 2025 Volunteer of the Year
By CHRIS GAIGE Staff Writer
SARANAC LAKE — Elle Finocan is this year’s Volunteer of the Year, nominated by fellow community members for a seemingly endless list of causes and organizations she has selflessly given her time to. Finocan moved to Saranac Lake in 2015 after retiring from her career as an administrative aide to the Otsego Northern Catskills BOCES District Superintendent. Hailing from Ireland originally, Finocan was originally acquainted with the Adirondacks through her late husband, John, who was from the region.
When she was working, Finocan and her family would come to the area frequently, and her daughter eventually moved here. As her retirement neared, Finocan decided she wanted to call Saranac Lake not a frequent destination — but rather, home.
“It was just the obvious choice for me,” she said. “When I retired, I wanted to come back. I wanted to live here.”

Finocan hardly knew anyone when she first moved to Saranac Lake. Volunteering was a way for her to get introduced to the community.
She first started volunteering with the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, helping with luge, bobsled and ice skating competitions. She then became involved with the Women’s Civic Chamber and soon after, was introduced to the Winter Carnival Committee by Liz Murray. Finocan hasn’t looked back since.
affectionately known as the Saranac Lake’s Volunteer recruiter,” according to one of her nomination letters. In addition to “walking the walk” by giving so much of her time to volunteering, Finocan radiates positivity and her affable persona makes her a wonderful ambassador for not only the event or activity but volunteering itself.
‘I am just so proud to be a part of this community and so thankful that I live here.’ Elle Finocan
“After that, I just became so involved in the community,” she said. “There’s nothing I love better than meeting new people and just getting them involved.”
Finocan is so widely involved with volunteering that she is
“Anyone who knows Elle knows what a positive attitude she brings to her volunteer jobs, which makes her a real pleasure to work with,” noted one of the letters nominating her for Volunteer of the Year.
The number of activities Finocan dedicates her time to is impressive by any metric. It includes the Winter Carnival Committee — where she is extensively involved with Family Night at the Palace — Ice Palace Workers, the Village Improvement Society, Village Parks Committee — the Pedal Pole and Paddle Race, the Willard Hanmer Guideboat and

Canoe Race, Cardboard Boat Race, Mudfest, 1st Night, the Grace Pantry, Women’s Civic Chamber — where she has taken on the role of Corresponding and Recording Secretary, as well as Hospitality Chair.
The list continues to grow. Recently, Finocan took on a leading role in the local effort to recycle soft plastics.
Finocan said she dedicates so much of her time volunteering because she loves meeting new people and showing off what Saranac Lake has to offer — both in terms of the various events that take place here, as well as the spirit of its citizens.
“I hate to just put myself out there and talk about all the stuff I do because I don’t do it for the recognition,” she said. “I do it because I just love giving back to this community. This community is unbelievable in how it always comes together to help everyone.”
Finocan said when she’s not volunteering, she enjoys snowshoeing, walking her dog and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
“I am just so proud to be a part of this community and so thankful that I live here,” she said. “Just an incredible place to live. I’m just so grateful to be a part of it.”

American Legion strives to support veterans
By GRACE McINTYRE Staff Writer
The American Legion, including the Post 326 in Lake Placid, exists primarily to support veterans. They raise money for scholarships for kids of veterans, as well as other community youth organizations.
The primary fundraiser that Post 326 holds each year is their Don Edgley Memorial Golf Tournament. Edgley was a long-time member and Commander of the Lake Placid Post.
The Legion provides other services for families of veterans. If requested, they can attend veterans’ funerals and do services at the wake or the graveside. They organize flag raising ceremonies at a number of locations around Lake Placid for Veterans Day and Memorial Day, also collaborating with the Boy Scouts of America to place flags on veterans’ graves in the North Elba Cemetary.

Inflation intervention
Grace Pantry grows as prices rise, offering free essentials not covered by food stamps
By AARON MARBONE Staff Writer
SARANAC LAKE — Every Wednesday, dozens of people from around the Tri-Lakes visit Grace Pantry at the Baldwin House on Church Street to get free home essentials like cleaning supplies, diapers, pet food and even some health care items which aren’t covered by food stamps.
It’s a warm place where customers and volunteers share conversation and kindness. In the back of the building, while volunteers filled bags with soaps, toothpaste, toilet paper and menstrual products, organizers Suzanne Beaumont and Leo Pickens, both local Quakers, talked about the growth they’ve seen in recent years.
They took over Grace Pantry from Maggie and Vance Mortensen in 2021 at the height of the coro-
‘Being able to have a helpful impact on people’s lives is huge,” Pickens said. “It’s a fulfilling of the spirit of generosity. ... It uplifts us all.’

navirus pandemic and a time of high need. But even since then, the need has grown four-fold. Back
then, Pickens said they averaged 16 orders per week. Now, they average 50 orders a week.
In the fall, they had a week with 61 orders.
Pickens’ figures show they serve 136 different households a month in the Tri-Lakes area — around 320 people in total.
Beaumont said they’ve had to grow as the need has nearly quadrupled since they started. This is because of increased demand, she said.
“It’s because of inflation,” Beaumont said. “What was fine when we began is not fine anymore.”
The average rate of inflation has been high in recent years — a cumulative inflation of 21.94% since 2020. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ inflation calculator shows that

$10 in 2020 has the same buying power as $12.31 today.
Pickens said he works with the pantry because he wants to give back to his community. He sees economic inequality as “rampant” in this country right now and wants to be able to directly help in a modest way.
“Being able to have a helpful impact on people’s lives is huge,” Pickens said. “It’s a fulfilling of the spirit of generosity. ... It uplifts us all.”
Beaumont lives in Peru, so she has access to a larger array of shops and organizations in the city of Platts-

burgh, where she also volunteers at the Plattsburgh Interfaith Food Shelf.
“Service is really important to me. It’s just everything,” Beaumont said.
She loves the connection it brings.
“I really believe in our interconnection,” she said. “And that we’re just not whole unless we have that connection with others and helping each other.”
How it works
Beaumont said their most popular items at Grace Pantry are the most expensive and necessary — namely baby diapers, adult diapers and menstrual products.
Each customer fills out an order
They don’t just get the cheapest items, Beaumont said — they get the right ones. If a baby struggles with diaper rash, they pay for diapers that work better. They don’t ask questions about customers’ finances, she said; they just offer help and community.
sheet with what their family needs. The pantry has dish soap, laundry detergent, vinegar, cleaning sprays, toilet paper, paper towels, menstrual products, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, razors, shampoo, shaving cream, lotion, body wash, soap, baby wipes, diapers, dog food and cat food.
These are all items which aren’t eligible to use food stamps on, but Beaumont said they are all items important for people’s health.
“The government helps you not at all, and with inflation, it’s really hard on folks,” she said.
She said they often get people who tell them that they started earning slightly more money and their state benefits got slashed.

week and she loves to hear their English improving as they settle in to a new home.
Pickens had high praise for Beaumont’s leadership and called her a “dynamo.” Beaumont blushed and said Pickens does great work picking up supply deliveries and organizing the pantry. She also said they couldn’t do anything without the 15 volunteers who get the work done.
The cost of living
The cost of inflation hits families, elderly people and the lowest wage earners hardest.
“In the United States, the prices of the cheapest food products climbed 30% between January 2020 and May 2024, outpacing the 22% increase of the fanciest foods,” according to a Harvard report titled “Charting ‘Cheapflation’: How
Budget Brands Got So Pricey.”
The New York Times reports that rents are up 25% since 2020, rising faster than mortgage rates on homes purchased before interest rates surged in 2022.
According to the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties, a living wage for one adult with one child in Franklin County in 2024 is $35.19. This report lists the median income in Franklin County at $43,500 and says that nearly 30% of children here live in poverty.
The international nonprofit organization United Way’s most recent local report on working families who are above the federal poverty line but still struggle to pay for all the necessities of life — what they call Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, or, ALICE — was released in 2022. This was during the midst of an inflation
spike, which has slowed but continues to climb ever since.
At that time, the reports found that 27% of Franklin County households were below the ALICE threshold and 30% of Essex County households were below.
According to these reports, Essex County’s median household income was $68,090 and Franklin County’s was $60,270.
The report calculated the bare minimum monthly cost to live and work in the current economy in Essex County for an adult with one child (not in child care) at $3,723. That requires an hourly wage of $22.34.

Dental donation
Grace Pantry volunteer Dianne Tkach sat down in the dentist chair with her orthodontist DJ O’Neill from Family Smiles Dental Care on Church Street last year, shortly after O’Neill purchased the practice.
Between cleanings, she mentioned her work at the pantry and O’Neill said he was interested in contributing. Ever since then, he’s been donating oral health care items to the pantry — sample toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes and denture adhesive.
“I just like to help out,” O’Neill said.
Now, he’s just providing the tools, he said, reminding everyone to brush and floss twice a day — once after breakfast and once before bed.
Oral health is big for quality of life, O’Neill said.
Grace Pantry
Tkach said good gum health is the first step to good bodily health.
O’Neill said sores or abscesses in the mouth make it hard to eat, abscesses can get into the blood stream and cause heart or brain issues with swelling and that bad oral health contributes to inflammation which can raise blood pressure or blood sugar numbers.
Lots of people skip the brush before bed, he said. They just want to go to sleep. But after eating all day long, there’s carbohydrates and sugars from food on the teeth — felt in that “fuzzy” sensation.
“Get all that off,” O’Neill said.
The bacteria that naturally exists in the mouth eats carbohydrates and sugars. This creates acids, and acids create cavities.
How to help
Item donations can be made by dropping them off on the Baldwin House porch at 94 Church St. next to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Pickens
said Beaumont prefers if this happens when she’s there on Wednesdays 3 to 5 p.m., because she likes to thank people and put a face to the donation.
Beaumont said people share supplies from all over. School districts donate extra menstrual pads. The national organization Warm Up America donates scarves and hats.
When organizers need supplies, they go to the store and buy them — at the same price as everyone else — with donated money, or their own.
Financial donors to Grace Pantry include the Cloudsplitter Foundation, the Carpenter Foundation, High Peaks Church, Saranac Lake Rotary, Saranac Lake Women’s Civic Chamber, the Saranac Lake Interfaith Food Pantry and the Startich family.
Grace Pantry is an operation of the Ecumenical Council of Saranac Lake. To donate, send a check to P.O. Box 194, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 with the memo “Grace Pantry.”
To volunteer, just stop by from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Strategies to find the right volunteer opportunity
By METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
Volunteering is one way to give back to the community, and also for people to give back to themselves. Individuals can reap many benefits from volunteering, including improving self-esteem and building professional relationships. With so much to be said for volunteering, people may wonder how to find the best places to volunteer their time and skills. Finding the right match takes a little bit of effort, and these strategies can further such attempts.
• Focus on your passions. A great place to begin when considering volunteering is to identify causes you are passionate about. Consider your hobbies, social issues that matter to you and your own professional experience. This process can help narrow down some volunteering options.
• Identify your skills and what you have to offer.
Nonprofit groups often seek people who can help them in specific areas. Skills like fundraising, public relations, marketing, or event planning are highly valuable within the nonprofit community.
• Try a short-term project. When testing the volunteering waters, it might be best to start small. You can take on a short-term project or commit to a few hours per week. If an
opportunity does not seem like the right fit, you can move on to something new relatively easily.
• Determine your availability. Figure out how much time you can realistically commit to an organization. A group that requires daily effort might not be the right fit if you only have a few hours a week to spare.
• Use a volunteer matching service. Resources like
VolunteerMatch or All for Good can help you find organizations that align with your interests.
• Seek recommendations from individuals you trust. Talk to friends, colleagues, neighbors, or family to ask if they can offer insight about volunteer organizations based on their own experiences.
• Think about your reasons for volunteering. Ponder why you want to get involved in charity work. Some people want to network while others want to gain new experiences. For others, volunteering is a means to getting involved with a charity that supports an effort near to their hearts. Knowing why you want to volunteer can help you narrow down the opportunities.
While volunteering is a meaningful experience for those involved, it can take time and effort before those who want to give back find the right opportunity to do so.

What goes into a go-bag?
How to prepare an emergency kit
By MELISSA KOSSLER DUTTON
Associated Press
(Editor’s note: This story was first published in the Associated Press on Jane 12, 2018.)
Heather Kretzer, a health consultant for the Florida Department of Health in Panama City, lives near the water. But the most recent call for an evacuation in her area wasn’t because of a hurricane but because of an active shooter.
The incident, which did not result in any bystanders being injured but did lead to the temporary evacuation of an apartment complex, drove home to Kretzer the need for all families to have a survival bag they can grab in an emergency.
“You can be asked to evacuate your home for a number of emergencies — often with little warning and limited time to gather your possessions,” she said.
No area in the country is immune from disaster and unexpected evacuation, said Jim Judge, emergency management director for Volusia County, Florida, and a member of the American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council. Threats range from weather concerns and wildfires to hazardous material spills and police matters.
With hurricane and wildfire seasons under way, summer is a good time to consider packing a go-bag of emergency supplies.
Having a pre-packed bag or bin ready will help reduce the stress of a stressful situation, said Stuart Warshaw, whose company, VLESdesigns, sells stocked emergency bags. He and other safety experts also recommend having a plan about how to evacuate and where to go.
“You need a cool head when there’s little time and potentially critical decisions to make,” he said.
His bag includes wheels so it can be rolled through urban areas or airports, and it also has straps and a waist belt so it can be worn as a backpack.
Some families prefer an old suitcase or plastic tub stored under a bed or in a closet, Judge said. A duffle bag also works well, Kretzer said.
The contents of your kit should help you survive up to three days, she said. Be sure to think about every member of the family, including pets.
“It’s like going camping — all the things you need to take with you,” Judge said.
Kretzer, Judge and Warshaw offered the following suggestions on what to include in an emergency bag:
Food and water
Remember that supplies should last the entire family three days. That includes 1 gallon of water per person per day. Include non-perishable food that requires no water or cooking. Don’t forget plates, silverware and a manual can opener. Protein bars make a good emergency food, Kretzer said.
Tip: Warshaw recommends water purification tablets in case the water supply becomes tainted.
Personal needs
This includes eyeglasses, contact solution, hygiene supplies, and prescription and over-the-counter medicines that are taken regularly. If you have a young child, include diapers, baby food and formula.
Tip: If you are unable to pack prescription medications, tape a note to the bag reminding you to grab them, or prepare a checklist of last-minute additions that’s kept with the bag.
Clothing
Three days’ worth for every member of your family.
Tip: Include sturdy shoes and hats.
Safety supplies
A go-bag should include a first aid kit, flashlight, extra batteries, matches in a waterproof container and a whistle. It also may be helpful to have strong tape, plastic sheeting and a few tools.
Tip: Remove the batteries from the flashlight and other items to avoid corrosion.
Communications tools
The power may be out, so a battery-operated or hand-crank radio is essential, Judge said. Two-way radios also will be useful. Pack phone cords and chargers to use once power is restored.
Tip: Consider identifying an outof-town relative as a contact point for everyone in the family, to relay important messages and updates.
Paperwork/cash
Either include copies of birth certificates, IDs, insurance policies and prescriptions in the kit or save encrypted copies/photos of them on a secure online storage spot. A map with evacuation routes highlighted also will be helpful. Make sure you have cash — preferably smaller bills — in the kit, in case the power is out and you can’t use credit cards and ATMs.
Tip: Print out a list of important phone numbers in case you can’t access the contact list in your phone.
Creature comforts
Consider taking blankets and pillows to make your stay at a shelter or other evacuation location more comfortable. Add a deck of cards, books, some games or other things that could amuse children in a shelter or hotel room.
Pet plans
If you will be evacuating with a pet, identify in advance what shelters allow them, advises Pet Sitters International. Pack a copy of veterinary and vaccination records, pet food, water bowl and leash.
Tip: Be sure you have the right size carrier to transport your pet to a shelter.
